Out

Summary:

Luna comes out to her friends. It goes well.

Notes:

This is just a self-indulgent fic with my OC coming out and her friends being supportive. They’re all juniors in this.

Work Text:

“I like girls!” Luna blurted, tensing up in fear of what her friends would say. Nejire had invited Luna, Mirio, and Tamaki over for a sleepover that night. They’d had a lot of fun so far, as was to be expected whenever they all hang out together. Things had been winding down, their energy fading and leading to exhaustion.

Silence followed Luna’s admission. She hadn’t been planning on coming out yet. It just sort of... came out, no pun intended. Even though she knew there was nothing to worry about, that her friends would be accepting, the silence was still nerve-wracking.

“That’s fine with us!” Ever the cheery one, Mirio was the first to break the silence. Words of agreement from the others followed, and Luna let out the breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding.

“That’s not an easy thing to say, thank you for trusting us.” Luna looked over at Nejire, almost confused at her uncharacteristic seriousness. Obviously this kind of situation would call for seriousness, she just wasn’t expecting Nejire’s tone to shift so suddenly. She didn’t let it show on her face, though.

If she’s being honest with herself, Nejire’s reaction was the one Luna was the most worried about. She knew some girls might be uncomfortable if they found out their friend was a lesbian, and Luna had been hoping Nejire wasn’t one of them. If she hadn’t wanted to be friends with Luna after she came out, it would’ve hurt way more than if it was Mirio or Tamaki.

You see, ever since the start of high school Luna’s had a bit of a crush on her blue haired friend. She’d been extremely careful to hide it, the only person who knew was her twin brother. If Nejire had hated her for being gay, it would’ve broken her heart. She wasn’t sure she’d be able to live with that.

“I think that’s enough seriousness for one night. Let’s keep this party going!” Luna exclaimed, though she kept her voice down to avoid waking up Nejire’s parents.

Once the attention was off of her, Luna let out another sigh. As much as she appreciated her friends’ support, she also didn’t want to make her coming out a huge deal. She’d rather just keep it calm and avoid being the center of attention for too long. Thankfully, her friends didn’t seem to mind. They quickly got back into sleepover mode, arguing over what lame party game they should play next.

Even after she changed the subject, though, her friends still gave small signs of support throughout the night. As their sleepover continued, Luna’s anxiety over her confession dwindled, and by the time they settled down to sleep it was gone.

“I know you probably don’t want to talk about it anymore, but seriously, I’m glad you told us,” Nejire said, out of the blue. Mirio and Tamaki were already asleep, so it was just Luna and Nejire.

“Thank you. It means a lot that you guys are being so supportive. I know some people would feel uncomfortable being friends with a gay person-“ Luna was cut off by Nejire gently yet firmly placing a hand on her shoulder, a very serious look on her face.

“If anyone has anything bad to say about you being gay, tell us. None of us will hesitate to take care of them if you want us to.” Luna nodded, and Nejire went back to her usual cheerful demeanor. To say that Luna was shocked was an understatement. Nejire’s always been more of a pacifist, preferring to try and talk things out with someone instead of resorting to violence, so to hear her so willingly threaten to hurt someone was very unlike her.

Under normal circumstances Luna would denounce this kind of language, she is the student council president after all, but right now she didn’t care. She was relieved that Nejire supported her enough to be willing to fight someone in her honor, rather than the alternative of wanting nothing to do with her anymore.

“We should probably try to sleep now. Wouldn’t want to mess up your sleeping schedule too badly.” Nejire was right. It was way later than Luna was used too, and if she wanted to maintain a schedule she’d have to get to bed very soon. She laid down and got comfy, and was asleep within minutes.

As she fell asleep, she thought she could feel someone gently petting her hair, as if they were trying to soothe her to sleep. It was probably just her imagination though.
