the rain was uncomfortably loud.
it rang in his ears. there was no sound besides that, and he knew even if he turned on the tv or walked into the kitchen (which he'd probably only muster up the motivation to do because blaisie would worry otherwise), it would be just as loud and just as much a reminder he was alone. his bed no longer felt warm- instead, it was dark and cold and he just wanted to get out, but he couldn't bother to sit up because the droplets hit glass and why were they always so loud?
chess, that cat that had ended up in his house one day and he'd decided to adopt, sat on his chest. it didn't help his panicked breaths, but he wasn't going to shove her off. plus, it made him feel a little less isolated. she stared out into the night, her head in the crook of his neck. it comforted him more to think that she was scared than to acknowledge that he was terrified, through and through. his coat had cat hair all over it. he didn't mind.
a thought. the first time he had watched the rain with someone else. blaisie. they were much younger then, but the moment stuck with him like glue. blaise's eyes lit up when he spoke, and he'd grab onto the windowsill and talk about nearly anything so long as it meant he was talking to him, to gant.
he rolled over, momentarily forgetting chess was on top of him, she stepped over him and huddled at his side, right underneath the blanket he'd ended up bunching up in his hands.
and maybe it was a bit too comforting to think of fire. but he thought of it anyways, and oddly enough, the rain didn't seem so frightening, and he truly didn't feel too alone anymore.
