Work Text:
“Mom! Mom!” Kyoka ran up to Mom and grabbed the edge of her nice soft house jacket. “My soulmate’s writing to me!” she waved her arm over her head, beaming bright as she could.
“Oh?” Mom set her glass on the counter and crouched in front of her, taking Kyoka’s arm in her hands. “They have very nice handwriting.”
“What’s it say? What’s it say?” she bounced in place, ear jacks flicking against her shoulders.
“My name is...” Mom read off slowly, smiling the way she always did when she was teasing Dad. “Here, I know your father’s been teaching you hiragana, can you sound this out?”
“Yao-yo-ro-su?” she looked up at Mom.
“Yaoyorozu.” Mom corrected. “Her name is Yaoyorozu Momo.”
“Momo.” Kyoka looked down at her arm with a grin. “Pretty name.”
“Do you want to write back?” Mom asked, and Jirou gasped.
“Yes!” she jumped in place, balling her hands up in front of her chest. “Please please please?”
“Only if you stop jumping.” Mom scolded gently. “Be nice to our downstairs neighbours.”
Kyoka stopped jumping, but her ear jacks started twisting out and back, out and back. It took forever for Mom to find a pen that worked, doodling little hearts across her wrist, but once she did she knelt in front of Kyoka and held it out. “Go sit at the coffee table, dear.” she said, her smile warm and loving. On her wrist, more little hearts appeared from Dad. “Write as neat as you can.”
“I will!” Kyoka promised, taking the pen in both hands and running back to where she’d been colouring. The pen tip was warm against her skin, and her hand only shook a tiny bit as she started writing under the words left by her soulmate. I am Jirou Kyoka. Her handwriting was bigger than Momo’s, but not by much.
Immediately, a heart scrawled into place after her name, then another, and she giggled as she started putting hearts around her soulmate’s name on her arm. Momo really was a pretty name. She hoped her soulmate would be just as pretty in person.
