Chapter 1: From Toddlers to Teens

Chapter Text

Age Three:

Two little boys sat together in the middle of a sandbox, babbling, their mothers watching them.

“Do you think they know what they are talking about?”

“Even though they aren't using words their eyes seem like they know what the other is saying.”

“Think they will stay close?”

“If I have anything to say about it Inko they always will.”

Age five:

“I'm scared. What if they don't like me? What if they push me like they did at the park?”

“It's okay Izuku, I'll take care of you. I won't let anyone be mean to you.”

“Kacchan is amazing!”

“I'm the best!”

The two moms stand to the side, watching as the boys talk about starting school.

“Mitsuki, how are we going to tell them they are going to different classes?”

“We aren't. I'm going to the school tomorrow and they will be in the same class or I'm finding them a new school.”

Age 10

“Izuku!”

“Kacchan!”

“Izuku!”

“Kacchan!”

“I'm not going!”

“Yes!”

“No!”

“Kacchan!”

“Izuku!”

“Kacchan… please for me?”

“That's not fair, I hate parties and I don't want to go. You know this.”

Izuku looks at his best friend, pouting. “Please Kacchan.”

“Gah! Fine! I'll go, but that wasn't fair.”

“You are amazing, Kacchan!”

“Don't you forget it!”

Mitsuki looks at Inko, she can see her friend is trying to hold back the laugh.

“Your son has mine wrapped around his finger, Inko.”

Age 13

Inko and Mitsuki watch as Izuku dances around the room, the boy is putting on a show to cheer up his friend.

“Come on Kacchan! It's fun! Dance with me!”

“I'm not dancing. One, I hate it. Two, even if I didn't, why would I when I'm in a bad mood.”

“You got second place.”

“I'm always first.”

Izuku tilts his head and pouts. “Does that mean you're not happy I got first?”

“I didn't say that. Come on don't be like that. I'm always happy when you do good.”

“Then dance with me.” Izuku says a huge grin on his face.

Katsuki rolls his eyes and gets up. “Fine, like always you get your way.”

“Yay you're going to dance with me. Kacchan is amazing.”

“Don't you forget it!”

Age 15

“You can't play football Izuku.”

“Says who?”

“Says me. Izuku you are half the size of the other guys, they will destroy you. This isn't like when we played in the park. I won't be there to stop it. I'm not joining some dumb team.”

“I don't need you to protect me. Just because you don't want to do it doesn't mean it's dumb.”

“Since when don't you need me to protect you?”

“Kacchan, I can protect myself and I have been for awhile.”

“Since when?”

“For a while, you taught me to take care of myself.”

“So you're saying we don't need to be together anymore. Are we even friends?”

“Of course we are Kacchan! We just don't need to do everything together.  It's okay for us to be apart, it doesn't change things between us. You are still my best friend and always will be.”

“Whatever. Screw you.” Katsuki responds as he walks out of Izuku’s room.

Izuku runs after Katsuki and hugs him from behind, his hands coming together on the blond's stomach. “Kacchan! Please, don't be mad. I can't handle you being mad at me.”

“Then don't do it.” Katsuki mutters as he places his hands over his friends

“I don't want you to get hurt.”

“Kacchan, I'll be okay and if I'm not I'll stop playing.”

“Promise me, Izuku?”

“I promise, Kacchan is the most important person next to my mom. I’d never want to let you down.”

“Fine, let's go to the park, might as well help you practice.”

“Kacchan is amazing! I can do anything with your help.”

Mitsuki and Inko pretend they weren't listening to the boys spat as they walk by.

“Don't be too late, it's your night to set the table Izuku.”

“Okay Auntie, I'll have him back in time.”

“Thank you Katsuki. You always do.”

Making sure the boys are gone Mitsuki turns to her friend. “When are they going to realize they like each other?”

“I don't know I thought we'd be planning a wedding by now.”

Age 16

“He asked you on a date?” Katsuki asked as the two friends cuddled on the couch it was their normal Friday movie night with their families. It started with their moms had been kids and continued to this day.

“Yea, I wasn't expecting it.” Izuku says as he fiddles with his fingers.

“What did you say?”

“I panicked and said I’d have to think about it.”

“Seriously? Think about it.”

“I panicked!”

“Why didn't you say no?”

“I didn't want to hurt his feelings. Plus it's not like anyone else has asked me.”

“Well do you like him?”

“He's nice.”

“I asked if you like him, not if he was nice.”

“Maybe in time I will.”

“It doesn't work that way. Either you know or you don't. Do you want to spend more time with him?”

“Well I don't think so, at least not in a romantic way. He talks about conspiracy theories all the time. He also mentioned he believes in Lizzies.”

“What the fuck is a Lizzie?”

“Kacchan, you don't want to know.”

“I'll take your word for that.”

“Kacchan…”

“Oh no what do you want?”

“Don't be mean. I just need help figuring out how to turn him down.”

“Why should I help?”

“Kacchan loves me and said he’d always be there for me.”

“Fine, I'll help you turn him down.”

“Kacchan is amazing!”

“Damn right I am.”

In the kitchen Mitsuki shook her head. “Inko, my son is an idiot.”

“Katsuki is an incredibly smart young man.”

“Did you not hear that conversation? It was the perfect time for him to confess.”

“One of them will take the first step when they are ready.”

Age 17

“You are not wearing that color!”

“Kacchan, I love the color green. Why can't I wear a green suit.”

“You will look like a stalk of broccoli! I'm not going with the jolly green giant.” The two young men are sitting on the couch pressed against each other looking through a catalog of suits.

“Kacchan I want to wear green.”

“How about a green vest to match your eyes? You look great with a vest. Shows off your arms.”

“If you say so.”

“I was wondering, do you want to get something to eat before?”

“The team is meeting together at Kirishima’s family's restaurant.”

“What the fuck? Why hadn't you said anything?”

“I knew you wouldn't want to go but I was hoping you would say yes for me.”

“I'd rather it just be the two of us. You know I don't like to be around everyone.”

“Kacchan…” Izuku starts tugging on his friends hand.

“That's not fair. You know I'd do anything for you.”

“That's because Kacchan is amazing!”

“Damn right I am.”

“Hand over what you chose and go wash up for dinner. Your dad and I will have it ready in time.”

Inko watches as the boys head up the stairs before turning to Mitsuki. “Did my son not realize he was trying to get them to go out to dinner alone”

“I swear they will never get their shit together.”

Age 18

“Kacchan!”

“What?”

“Dorm assignments went out! We need to look and see if we got the same dorm room.”

“I'm sure we did and on the off chance we didn't, we'll figure it out.”

The two sit down on the beds and open their emails, holding their breaths, praying that they end up as roommates. In unison the two let out a cheer moments later Izuku is tackling Katsuki, lays on top of him, he smiles. Green eyes meet red.

“I'm so happy! I get to be with my best friend.” Izuku chirps happily.

“Me too, can't imagine being roomed with anyone but you.”

“So lucky. Kacchan is amazing.”

“Damn straight I am.”

Mitsuki walks by the Katsukis room, shaking her head as she walks past and heads downstairs.

“Hey, Inko I think calling and talking to the university about their room assignment was the right idea. I think they may finally get their shit together.”

“One can hope.”
