Work Text:
it’s midnight when yoongi receives the news from his father.
the outside world is dead quiet. not even a breeze to be heard, felt or seen with the way it blows the trees and flowers as if they’re dancing in a garden of music. the moon lights up the interior of the house, brushing through the cracks on their window from it not being fully closed despite yoongi’s father asking him nearly three hours ago to close everything so the midnight chills didn’t creep in.
then again, with the anger that seeps through yoongi’s bones he doesn’t feel it. all he feels is warmth and rage. all he sees is red.
their house isn’t quiet. it wouldn’t be after the news he has just received. learning that his future is being thrown away for the sake of some marriage. to a person he’s never met before in his life. to another vampire like himself.
he doesn’t want to marry this vampire. he doesn’t even want to meet them.
and even though it’s midnight and the rest of his family is sleeping he makes that clearly known. voice loud and powerful as his arms stay crossed over his chest as he yells, screams and argues with his father. he isn’t letting his future be thrown away so easily. especially since as he’s an adult and can choose who to like and who to marry on his own.
besides, there’s already someone who’s captured his heart. someone he wants to be with forever.
“yoongi, please think about this rationally.” his father pleads. his eyes are tired, body sore and aching as he leans against the wall. yoongi stands across from his, eyes flashing red with anger. with betrayal. his own father is setting him up for an arranged marriage. he couldn’t believe this. “it’s good for you.”
yoongi shakes his head, “it isn’t good for me. it’s good for you. getting me married to someone else includes getting some financial pay from it and i’m not doing this. i’m not some pawn you can sell off whenever you deem fit.”
“what are going to do then?” his father questions. “go to that witch of yours? the very people we shouldn’t be with because it’s forbidden? because they’re our enemies? have you forgotten about that yoongi? us vampires and witches don’t belong together. he is your enemy. remember that.”
“no. he’s not.” yoongi takes a step towards the door and grumbles. “he’s everything you’re not. everything i need in a person, in someone supportive. vampires and witches be damned. we didn’t choose where we were born. we shouldn’t be made to suffer.”
yoongi turns around then, lets his arms fall to his sides as he grabs a hold of the front door and takes a step to leave. his father calls out for him but he doesn’t stop. through the anger and the tears that flow through him, all he can do is seek solace in the one he loves. in hoseok. the only person he’s ever truly had. surely he can make everything better right? tell him that he’s done the right thing by sticking up for them, by fighting this engagement he never wanted.
everything would be fine once he was in hoseok’s arms.
they had to be.
it doesn’t take long for yoongi to get to hoseok’s cottage. but by then the tears on his face are a mixture of dried and still freshly falling. he hates that he’s crying, hates that this even became a thing because he was having such a great day and was getting ready for bed before his father called out to him. he should have stayed the night at hoseok’s like the younger asked of him, but for some reason he felt so compelled to go home like he needed to and now he regrets it.
though the more yoongi thinks about it the more he realizes it would have occurred regardless of when he went home.
he sighs, hand coming up to his eyes to rub at them as he reaches hoseok’s cottage. he wanders towards it feeling a little bad for barging in at such a late hour, surely hoseok was asleep right now as well. maybe he should just walk around for a little bit and clear his head, but if there’s a chance that hoseok is awake then he wants to see him.
he pushes the door open slowly. hoseok has never been one to lock his doors despite how much yoongi tells him it’s not safe to keep them unlocked. hoseok always says that if someone wants to break in a locked door won’t keep them out so there’s no point. it’s logic that yoongi can’t bring himself to understand.
the inside of hoseok’s cottage is warm. a small fire is going in the pit, containers of magical dust placed in their correct spots because hoseok cannot live unless everything is organized and tidy. it’s one thing that yoongi adores about him. the way he always needs things in order. he shivers as he closes the door behind him, didn’t realize how cold he had been until he was by the fire place warming himself up. it’s surprising that he felt like he was freezing considering there wasn’t any breeze outside but ignores the questions that come to mind.
the sound of the bathroom door opening up is what drags yoongi attention over to it. his eyes widen when hoseok emerges, hair a jumbled mess and eyes looking like they’re tired but not asleep yet. has hoseok not fallen asleep at all? why was he still awake?
“yoongi?” hoseok’s voice is laced with confusion as he steps towards the fire place. his own eyes are widen, mouth slack as the fire lights up yoongi’s face and shows off the tears. yoongi quickly looks away from him. maybe coming here was a dumb idea. “you’re crying. what happened?”
yoongi lets out a shaky breath, eyes falling to the ground as another wave of tears form in his eyes. hoseok immediately rushes up and wraps his arms around him, holds him carefully, tightly. as if he’ll break. yoongi feels like he’s definitely reached that point.
it’s subtle but yoongi can feel hoseok’s magic working on him. can feel the way his body relaxes and he doesn’t feel the overwhelming need to cry right now despite being upset. it’s a trick hoseok has only had to use a few times. one that yoongi had actually forgotten about but right now he’s a bit grateful the witch used it. he’s tired of crying.
he’s led over to the bed in the cottage. it’s not the biggest place. everything is in one room besides the restroom but it’s quiet, it’s nice and yoongi considered this place home more often than not. hoseok sits beside him, hand holding his as he waits patiently. quietly.
yoongi is grateful that he isn’t rushed.
“my…father…” he begins after a while of them sitting in complete silence. hoseok continues to rub his thumb in circles on yoongi’s hand, “he...um...he set up an arranged marriage. i’m supposed to...i have to marry someone else. s-someone i don’t know.” his voice is quiet. broken and fragile. soft as if speaking those words rip his heart from his chest.
they do though.
“oh.” hoseok freezes, hand stopping its motion as he looks down at the ground. he pulls away. yoongi’s pain deepens. “i see. well...if you have to do then you—“
“don’t say that.” yoongi bites. he shakes his head immediately, “don’t tell me you’re accepting that! that you’re just gonna let me get married off to someone else.”
hoseok looks taken aback, mouth falling close then open once again, “what do you want me to do then?” he questions. yoongi scoffs, “yoons, he’s your father. i’m just a witch who you shouldn’t be with.”
“you’re supposed to fight against this. fight for me. for us. ” this day couldn’t get any worse, could it? “d-don’t you want me?”
“i-i do!” hoseok stammers out. he exhales a shaky breath and turns to yoongi. “i love you, yoongi. so much but...he’s your father. i have no power against him. us being together is a risk already.”
yoongi looks towards the door. he feels like running again. like leaving and just never looking back. he doesn’t though. his heart aches at the thought of it.
“i want to be with you. forever.” yoongi says. “maybe we shouldn’t be together. maybe witches and vampires hate each for stupid reasons but they shouldn’t stop us.”
it falls silent after that. yoongi breathing heavily as he keeps himself distracted picking at the dark blazer he’s wearing. his tongues his fangs, feels the need to bite into his own lip to make it bleed so he can feel something right now.
because all he feels is emptiness.
“what do you propose we do then?” hoseok whispers. he turns to look at yoongi finally and reaches for his hand once more. “to be together. what do we do?”
“we could...run away?” yoongi suggests. it’s a crazy idea. ridiculous even and yet it’s the only thing that comes to his mind. the only way that they can together and he can escape this engagement he doesn’t wish for.
there’s nothing keeping him here. the only people he has in his life happen to be right beside him.
“where would we go?”
“i don’t know. somewhere though.” yoongi lifts his head and locks eyes with hoseok, “a place where vampires and witches don’t hate each other. we could hide ourselves, maybe amongst the humans, no one would find us.” yoongi squeezes hoseok’s hand, “we could make a life together and start anew.”
“that sounds nice,” hoseok admits. he smiles slightly. “let’s do it. run away and start anew.” he scoots towards yoongi, “as long as i’m with you i’m content. you’re all i need in life.”
yoongi smiles, “you’re all i need.” he murmurs as hoseok’s lips brush against his.
their kiss is cut fairly short though as the two of them decide to quickly pack up anything they desire to bring with them. there isn’t any place in their minds for where they can go. they’ve never ventured to the human world, never set foot on their territory but it would be nice. interesting as well.
and with their whispers in the dark about how they love each other and how they’ll be together forever, yoongi knows...
they could do this.
together .
