Work Text:

Now, it wasn’t that you didn’t want to go and see your family over the Christmas period. Of course, you loved each and every one of them to pieces, you would die for them, blah blah blah. It was just that right now? This year? You would rather stay at home and cry a tear shaped outline of your face into your favourite pillow.

After losing your dream job, you’d had to take on a terrible paying position at the local fast food restaurant that was roughly a ten minute walk from your apartment. When you’d told your parents you wanted to make it big in the city becoming a renowned editor at one of the most prestigious newspapers in the country, you hardly imagined you would end the year flipping burgers. Of course, you didn’t judge your coworkers at the fast food place at all - of course, a job was a job, and you were happy to simply be making rent. But god, if you weren’t heartbroken over losing your footing on the ladder towards your lifetime goal.

Packing light was in your nature, especially when going home for Christmas. Your mother was a furiously detailed planner and supplied each of her returning children with all the basic essentials, including some things that you could live without. Why she felt the need to offer you all sleep masks, you weren’t exactly sure. Perhaps it was something to do with the fact she had a great job at the local hotel in the city centre - over time, she had picked up some habits to make staying at home more like a business trip at a swanky hotel rather than just coming home to your childhood bedroom.

That being said, you had packed your laptop into your carry on luggage. Though your parents were prepared for guests, they weren’t exactly the kind of people who moved with the times. At least, not where technology was concerned, and you would rather not have to fight your elementary school teacher sister for time on the ancient computer when she had lessons to plan. Plus, you needed to attempt to find a new job - one where you didn’t come home every night stinking of grease and BBQ.

Tugging your suitcase across the stained carpet, you positioned it near the wall beside the door to your apartment as you locked up. The suitcase had an annoying habit of tipping over, even when there was little inside. The elevator signalled its arrival as you rounded the corner, and you couldn’t help but think it was the luckiest thing that had happened to you in a while.

The elevator was surprisingly the warmest part of your building, the heating hardly taking the edge off the bitter winter you were experiencing. Snow was due to reach the city within the next few hours, so you really wanted to be on your flight before you got stranded and forced to spend Christmas alone in your sad little apartment. When the elevator stopped at the floor below you, instinctively you stepped aside for whoever was about to pass through the doors. You were preoccupied with checking the traffic updates on your phone to notice the handsome young man slide in beside you at first, but as you glanced up and looked at the mirrored doors, a surprised little gasp got caught in your throat, a cough working its way free. You cleared your throat, glancing sideways at the man as he offered you a polite smile.

He was very beautiful - oddly delicate in his features, a soft round nose, pretty eyes, a tiny plush mouth that seemed to be stained a rosy pink colour. You couldn’t help stealing the occasional glance as you travelled down to the lobby together.

It was around the fifth floor when you heard mechanical groaning begin overhead. Anxiety gripped your heart, stomach swooping with fear before the whirring sounds came to a sharp stop, as did the elevator. With a glance towards the man beside you, you noted with relief that he seemed just as worried as you, his brows drawn together in confusion as he peered up at the ceiling. You were both a little unsteady on your feet as the elevator froze just between the fifth and fourth floors, and once you registered what exactly had happened, you glanced heavenward before groaning aloud.

“You have got to be kidding me,” The man spoke, voice soft but harsh as he voiced his frustrations. You mirrored his sentiment, it was only now you noticed a suitcase in his hand, along with a small pink bag of gifts. You guessed he was perhaps visiting a girlfriend - you couldn’t help but imagine how disappointed he was to be trapped here with little old you instead of his no doubt beautiful girlfriend.

The whole situation was only made worse when the lights cut out, followed shortly by a soft fan noise and the flickering of what you could only assume were backup lights. The elevator was bathed in a yellowish glow, and you felt your last shred of hope cut itself loose from your grasp.

The man took a step towards the emergency panel, opening it up and clicking a few numbers. The building was big, very big, and so you could imagine the damage the apparent blackout had caused. And on Christmas Eve no less.

“I don’t think anyone is going to get to us soon,” The man’s voice took you by surprise, pulling you out of the depressing internal monologue you had been torturing yourself with. When you glanced up with a vaguely confused expression, he clarified, his thumb pointing towards the red phone that was now back on the hook, “The whole building is out. They have another five elevators to see before us,”

“Oh,” You said simply, as if your Christmas plans hadn’t completely been shattered within a few moments - your flight was in less than an hour, and there was no way you would get another on such short notice. You were really about to spend Christmas all alone, “Oh God,”

The man’s lips twitched, and he leaned against the wall, “Exciting plans?”

Your mouth opened once before closing again. You didn’t exactly have plans you were looking forward to, but even a Christmas being interrogated by your extended family was better than sitting alone in your apartment. “Kind of,” Your eyes darted down to the bag in his hands, “I guess I’m not the only one,”

He followed your line of sight, a little frustrated huff passing his lips, “Ah, yeah. My niece turns four today. I guess I won’t be seeing her until the day after Christmas,”

His niece? You had been off base about the girlfriend thing then - you couldn’t help but wonder if he was single. Shortly after the thought passed through your touch-deprived mind, you shook it off. Finding a boyfriend was the least of your problems right now.

“I was just seeing family too,” You spoke again, filling the pleasant silence between the two of you, “I kinda feel like this was a blessing in disguise for me, at least,”

“They’re that bad, huh?” The man was grinning now, and you found yourself doing the same. His smile was oddly infectious, the soft tilt of his lips bringing a warmth to the tops of your cheeks.

“Nah, they are okay. I just had a crappy year, and relaying it to them wasn’t what I wanted to do with my two weeks off work,” Reliving the depressing ordeal of this year wasn’t on the top of your wishlist this christmas, even though you enjoyed spending time with your family. Sometimes you just needed time alone to process everything.

The man in front of you seemed to understand that. He leaned back against the railing circling you both in the elevator, his eyes glancing over at you before he was peering back down at the bag in his hand. “I can kinda relate. I haven’t exactly been the best son, brother or uncle lately. Work just got too intense, I never had any time to visit them. I guess I should have made time…” He fixed a smile onto his face before he could get lost in regrets for too long, sticking out his hand to you as form of introduction, “I’m Yoongi, by the way. Figured I’d introduce myself if we’re gonna be in here a while,”

Taking his hand, you enjoyed the solid firmness of his fingers around your palm. His hands were rough, manly. It made your stomach flip a little before you cleared your throat to speak, “I’m Y/N. Nice to meet you,”

“Talk about meet-cute,” He winked at you just before he let go of your hand and you swore you almost blushed. He looked around for a few moments after that, and you did the same, hand still wrapped around the handle of your suitcase. Yoongi suddenly unzipped his bag, pulling out a bottle of whiskey with a bow on it. He tugged off the bow, throwing it on the floor before he looked over at you, “We’re gonna be here a while, and seen as I’m not gonna be giving this gift to my brother just yet, I thought we could kill some time?”

Not a big whiskey drinker yourself, you figured it couldn’t do any harm to drink the time away spent trapped in an elevator with a handsome stranger. Your mother certainly wouldn’t be proud, but fuck it, she wasn’t here.

“Sure, why not?”

------

“That can’t be true!”

“I shit you not, last year of college, I met the President,” Yoongi smiled widely at you, his eyes a little sleepy and his cheeks rosy. You imagined you looked much the same, but a little less pretty.

“But at a McDonalds? I mean, are you sure?” Yoongi handed you the half-empty bottle of whiskey, and you threw back a mouthful, the burn not nearly as harsh as it had been an hour ago, “I feel like you’re pulling my leg,”

“Well,” He touched his finger to his chin as a display of confusion, “I was high at the time. And it was three AM,”

You burst out laughing, and Yoongi followed, both your heads lolling against the wall of the elevator. You watched the long line of his neck as he swallowed another mouthful of the brown liquor and sighed. It had been a while since you had looked at a man up close like this - even longer since you’d kissed one. Most of your dates usually ended up in the guys leaning in before you dodged them and planted an awkward kiss on their cheek. Right now though, you didn’t want to kiss Yoongi on the cheek. If he leaned in, you wouldn’t dodge him.

Perhaps it was the alcohol talking, but you couldn’t deny this spark between the two of you. He made you laugh more than any other man had, and he was sweet, charismatic, shy when it suited him. He seemed like the whole package, plus he was gorgeous. If only there were a mistletoe in here…

Yoongi’s head turned to you sharply, and for a second you were confused before you realised with a sharp shock of embarrassment that you had said the last part of your inner monologue out loud.

“Is that so?” He murmured, a slow grin forming on his face even as his cheeks became tinged with pink at your unintentional bluntness, “I guess it would have made things more interesting if there were a mistletoe in here. I wouldn’t have to make up some cheesy line to ask to kiss you,”

His eyes were twinkling, and you felt the familiar rush of butterflies dancing in your stomach when your lips became the object of his attention, “I think I’d say yes no matter how cheesy the line was,”

He blinked at you, the soft smile still fixed on his lips before he glanced away, reaching over to the ribbon he’d discarded on the floor and holding it up between you both, “Why don’t we just pretend this is a mistletoe, then,”

You didn’t give him much chance to prepare before you all but threw yourself at him, lips pressed hotly to his own as your arms wrapped around his neck. His tongue had just began to graze your bottom lip before he dropped the ribbon again and tugged you against him, allowing your knees to settle on each side of his hips. His hands ran up and down your back, and you licked the taste of the whiskey off his tongue. When he groaned against you, it was as if you’d forgotten what it felt like to be wanted, and your whole body seemed to burst into flames right there and then.

BRRRING!!

You pulled apart, dazed and breathless, staring at each other before you realised the elevator phone was ringing again. You slid off Yoongi’s lap and allowed him to take the call while you caught your breath.

“Hello,” A thrill ran through you to hear the gruffness of Yoongi’s voice, and you wished for a second that they had waited a little longer before calling. Just a little longer… Yoongi swallowed, staring over at you as he stood with the phone to his ear, an internal battle bubbling inside of him as he ran his eyes over your frame. You shivered. “Yeah? Uh…” He smiled at you again, and you returned with a shy grin of your own, “You know what? Leave us till last. We can wait,” And then he hung up the phone, rushing back to wrap his arms around you as you filled the elevator with laughter, muffled soon by the feel of his lips on yours.

Merry Christmas indeed...
