Chapter Text
Midoriya wakes up, his head still groggy from sleep, his alarm blaring and drowning out his thoughts. He turns and lets his hand fumble for the off switch. The noise is abruptly cut off and his thoughts come to meet him full force.
Except they aren’t his thoughts. “Why couldn’t they just be my thoughts?”
"Well, not everything can just be your thoughts. I have important thoughts too, you know!"
Really again? Everyone thought he was just make-believing a quirk before. Now they would call him delusional. And of course, he had to actually speak for them to hear him so he couldn't even just mentally ask them to talk to him less, whenever they got too loud.
"I mean I'm not saying you don't but do they have to be in my head?" Don't deities have anything better to do than talk endlessly in his head?
“The bunny boi responded!!! Also nah, that's boring.”
Did they really not think he would respond when they were in his head? “Wait bunny boi?” He asked as he pulled himself out of his bed and made his way to his dresser.
“Yep! Bunny boi is my nickname for you now.”
“Oh okay, I guess. Thanks?” He pulls on his uniform for the new year. It was worn down in places and sewn in many others. All his uniforms take a beating. He sighs as his headmates continue to chatter. He grabs the handle and is about to go get some breakfast when.
“Hello, smol child! I want to pat your floofy hair! It just looks so soft! Also, did you know that punching someone is a good way to manage anger???” wait what. He pulls his hand away from the doorknob not ready to leave the privacy of his room when his mom might hear him talk about hitting people under his breath.
“Punching? I prefer to slap. I wouldn't want to hurt my knuckles. And it makes for good drama, hehe.” They are crazy, they are actually crazy. He wouldn’t hurt anyone, especially for no reason.
“Yeah..what about just... Don't punch Anyone” okay at least they make some sane suggestions.
“Yeah, good idea I don't need people hating me any more than they do.” He says because again, no visible quirk, possibly delusional. Not a great combination in a world where your worth is very much connected to your quirk.
“Those people need to burn.” Oh dear lord were all gods this passionate and vindictive?
“They are just idiots, don't listen to them.”
“Alright will do. And uhm. Can I ask that you keep the chatter to a minimum while I'm at school? I’d really like to be able to focus.” He asks as he checks to makes sure all his homework is in his bag.
“Sure! Sorry!”
“You all, shut up. The bean has school!” one of them shouts and it quells the chatter for a little while enough for him to gather his own thoughts. And sit down to breakfast with his mom.
“Morning, Izuku. Did you sleep well?”
“Yeah. I slept well” he’s about to tell her the voices came back when he nearly bites his tongue as he hears.
“Kid please for the love of fuck do not tell her.” and okay yeah maybe they had a point. When he was younger everyone passed it off as imaginary friends, and even when he was younger there were a lot fewer voices, occasionally one or two would pop up at random intervals before disappearing again. He didn’t know why they were back now of all times let alone this many. “I don't need to be teaching you how to break out of the psych ward just yet” and his mom would never do that to him. But they did have a point and wait... break out of a psych ward? What kind of gods were these voices.
"if it's necessary to tell her, then I beg you to find the necessary evidence beforehand" and yeah that would be the most practical but where the heck could he find proof that the voices in his head didn’t make him crazy and that they were, in fact, other people speaking into his head to give him advice as poorly given as that advice may currently be. He was not going to hit people, thank you very much. Then again maybe he was crazy.
“You seem to be thinking about something really hard dear, care to share?” She says as she puts another bite of rice in her mouth.
“No mom, It’s nothing really just trying to figure out how I want to go about something.” He says taking a bite himself as the voices argue about the best way to go about getting proof and whether or not they should even try to find proof.
“Can I help?” The voices get louder and overlap each other but he’s already made up his mind, they are right, adequate proof is needed to convince anyone of anything, including himself. That’s how it’s always been.
“No mom, I think I figured something out.” He says as he goes back to finishing his food.
When he has finished he grabs his bag and heads out the door for school. He takes a deep breath and the voices are quiet as they talk to each other and it allows him to think for one moment. Before “How dare people hate the green bean!?”
“Yeah, those people need to burn.”
“Please don’t burn my classmates, they don’t deserve that.” and he is back to questioning his sanity and whether or not these voices are here to help or torment him. He just wants to be a hero.
“Can we burn Bakugou??? Just a little bit” wait what? He just, no. No, They can’t do that to Kacchan, not when he is going to be an amazing hero.
“Yeah, burn the Bakuwitch” Bakuwitch? What on Earth has Bakugou done to deserve the wrath of not one but several angry gods.
“Burning the blond does seem like a good idea…” and seriously do all of them hate him, sure he’s not perfect, no one is, but really? This seems like a little too much.
“burn burn burn!” actually can he even burn? With his quirk, he must have a natural resistance to heat. But then again even he must have his limits. And now is not the time for quirk analysis.
“Arson is the best type of therapy” and Midoriya stops in his tracks just to process that statement because now he has to analyze the merit of such an outrageous statement before he can give an answer.
“For some reason, I doubt that.” because if he’s being honest it would probably just stress him out more, in addition to being illegal and probably hurting a lot of people.
“Trust me. It is.” and he gets the distinct feeling they are smiling coyly about this.
“I can confirm, it is.” and why is this a conversation he needs to have. No, he isn’t going to commit a felony, that’s, that’s what villains would do.
“Well it does beat murder so-” that can not be where the bar is. There is no way that these voices no matter their origin, divine or otherwise, can convince him to commit a crime.
He does his best to ignore these voices since they are just putting him in a bad mood, seriously no wonder everyone thinks he is delusional when he has voices in his head telling him arson is an acceptable answer to his problems. Becoming a hero almost seems like a pipe dream at moments like this.
Then again hasn’t it always been a pipe dream?
It is while Midoriya is lost in his thoughts that he comes across the school gates. He stands there a moment as the voices crash and clammer against each other all trying to give Izuku some guidance. It’s frankly overwhelming and Izuku can’t even begin to imagine how he will be able to learn anything like this, let alone keep a low profile.
“You all, shut up. The bean has school!” one of them demands and the voices quiet.
“Thank you,” he whispers as he heads into school the voices a dull mumbling in the back of his head as they suggest something every now and again. He walks into his classroom and manages to avoid most of the trouble. A student glares at him from across the room before going back to ignoring him.
He barely has a chance to sit down before much louder than they needed to be, “Hey, Izuku. Do you actually have any friends or do you just talk to the voices in your head?”
He tries not to look annoyed because that will just attract unwanted attention. He lowers his head and covers his head blocking most people from seeing him mutter or his face as that seemed to annoy some of his classmates. “I don’t usually talk to the voices in my head either since one, as I got older it got weirder and two, a lot of the time I didn’t see the point, seeing as you all just left within a few days of showing up anyway. I’ve really only been talking to you guys today because you are all louder than usual.”
“They think he's quirkless, what the fuck do you think?” someone adds on to the end of his answer.
“It is most likely that we are the only friends that Beanie has.” friends was stretching it as he had no idea whether these voices had good intentions for him or not. But yeah probably. It was nice to have someone to talk to that seemed to care about his health even if that did mean the destruction of the rest of humanity. Although the only solace he had there is that they couldn’t force him to do anything. Just annoy him to pieces. He sighs lightly as class begins.
“Hey Izuku, I’ll try to keep your head clear until lunch, then, I think it’d be great if we can work out a deal or something, compromise and all that. We can help you if you let us but at the same time it’d be bad if we caused you more problems then we are worth.” he thought about that for a moment because yeah, he had no idea what knowledge these voices could give him maybe they could help him become a hero. Although with the amount of crime they suggested maybe not. He sighed.
“Yeah, that sounds like a deal. Thank you for that... who are you so I can thank you specifically,” he asks as he starts pulling out his stuff for class.
“We’ll talk at lunch Izuku. Right now just focus on your studies.” he nods though he knows they can’t see him. He smiles; if they can talk things out and learn a bit about each other, maybe figure out how his quirk works he could become a hero. But if they mention arson one more time he swears he’ll… well he isn’t sure what he’ll do but he’ll do his damndest to spite them.
The bell rings and so his day starts, and to his surprise, his head is about as quiet as it normally is, which is to say racing with thoughts as he thinks about possibilities and the lesson in front of him and what he intends to do tonight and how much time he has to spend on his homework tonight. He’ll have to thank that one voice again for keeping the voices away. Granted a few slip through. One asks about whether or not memes still exist. Another trash talks Bakugou as he says something. It’s strange and otherworldly but not wholly unwanted. It’s nice to talk to people other than his mom that don’t immediately hate him.
So if he is caught off guard as the bell for lunch rings that is because he isn’t sure what he wants. Is it okay to indulge what everyone thinks is his insanity? Is it okay for him to listen to deities that scream for destruction? Is he okay with trusting voices that always left him before?
He wants to be a hero and to be a hero he has to take every advantage possible. He takes a deep breath as he carefully makes his way to his secluded corner in the school, he wants to be alone for this.
“Alright,” he starts once he reaches his corner and pulls out his lunch placing it in front of him. “How is this going to work?”
