Work Text:
Hawks was a very secretive person. That much was obvious.
His sidekicks had been working with him for years and still, the info they had on his personal life was limited. All they knew was:
-He liked chicken (like, a lot).
-He pretended to like Endeavor when he was around him, but as soon as he was back in his own agency, he'd start muttering and cursing him out.
-Despite what many believed, he wasn't just another blonde himbo. Sure, he was dense sometimes, but he was smart, incredibly so.
-He had a weird obsession over dragons.
-He was a workaholic who didn't even take days off on the holidays or on his own birthday.
-He was most definitely dating someone. The identity of his significant other was still a complete mystery, and the only clue they had was that it was a he, which lead them to the last thing they knew about their boss:
-He was into guys (whether he was more than just into guys was still up in the air, but definitely at least into dudes if he was dating one).
And that was it.
It wasn't much, but anyone who'd been a part of Hawks' agency for long enough knew better than to try and pry information out of him. He was guarded, he knew exactly how to turn the conversation to divert your attention from the matter at hand.
So any kind of information they had on him was either because he had slipped up, or because he'd been generous enough to let them on into that little piece of info.
Tokoyami was probably the only one at the agency that truly knew Hawks, although no one was really surprised at that, considering it was a well known fact that he was like Hawks' little adoptive brother. But as such, he also never revealed anything about Hawks (and everyone had tried to get anything out of him too, especially Aqua, the agency's local gossip girl).
So absolutely everyone was surprised the day Hawks arrived at the agency, a small child with poofy white hair, blue eyes, and white and blue wings holding his hand.
Hawks went straight for Tokoyami, looking like he was in a hurry.
"Hey, can you take care of Ryu for a little bit? I have a meeting with the Commission and Tou is out and Rumi is going to be at the meeting too so I couldn't find anyone else." he spoke in a rush.
Tokoyami blinked slowly, processing Hawks' words. Next to him, the kid beamed at Tokoyami.
"Hi uncle Toko!"
"Uh… Sure, hi Ryu."
"Great!" he lifted up the kid seemingly effortlessly, looking at him "Alright little bird, daddy's gotta go now. Be good with your uncle, okay? Aunt Rumi might come pick you up later."
The kid nodded obediently.
"Bye daddy!"
"I'll miss you, little bird." Hawks ruffled the kid's hair before putting him down again and taking off.
And exactly 3.5 seconds after he was gone, everyone was already gathered around Tokoyami and the kid. And unsurprisingly, it was Aqua, one of Hawks' sidekicks with the ability to control water, who squealed out:
"Boss has a kid!?"
Clutter, another sidekick with a mind controlling Quirk of sorts and always the clueless one, stared at the kid in question, who was looking at the crowd with big, curious eyes. "He's the boss' kid?..."
"God fu…" Aqua started, cutting herself off upon reaching there was a kid present. "Clutter, my man, you see those marks around his eyes? And his wings? He's at least clearly related to the boss, you idiot!"
Pixie, the last one of the sidekicks, with pastel green hair and fairy-like shimmery wings kneeled down, smiling at the kid.
"Hi! I'm Pixie. What's your name?"
Ryu looked at Tokoyami, who just shrugged as if to say 'I can't stop them, sorry'. Finally he smiled, looking back at Pixie.
"Ryu!"
"Tsukoyomi!" Aqua squealed now. "You knew he had a kid!?"
Tokoyami shrugged again. "It was his desire to keep it a secret."
"How old are you?" Pixie asked again.
Ryu looked deep in thought for a second, finally holding out his hand with 5 fingers, a triumphant look on his face.
"Wait, but I thought he had a boyfriend. Did he…?" Clutter hesitated, lowering his voice to make sure Ryu wouldn't hear him, although now he seemed distracted enough by Pixie's wings, ooing and giggling at her as she showed them to him. "Is the kid from a one night stand or something?..."
"Ah…" Tokoyami said, looking suddenly a little bit uncomfortable. "No, he isn't. But I'm afraid Hawks himself is the only one who can give you the details as to…"
Aqua gasped, which was suddenly all too reminiscent of the time they first found out Hawks was dating someone, and said: "Oh my gods don't tell me I was right and he lays eggs."
Everyone went silent.
Aqua screeched.
"Tsukoyomi, your silence says it all! Oh my gods… So he had a kid with his boyfriend!?"
"Fiancée." Tokoyami corrected absentmindedly.
"He's engaged!?" Hana, a part of the PR department, was the one to say now. "And he didn't consider at least telling us!?"
Tokoyami was starting to look more and more mortified by the second.
"It definitely explains some things…" Pixie said, as she battled her wings softly still for Ryu's entertainment, who kept staring at the way her wings reflected the light.
"Alright, we knew he had his secrets… But holy shit. He got engaged and had a kid and never once said anything!?" Aqua spoke again.
And then, the door to the rest area where everyone was suddenly flew open, and in walked Yamamoto, Hawks' personal assistant and the one in charge of the front desk, screaming at the top of her lungs:
"What's this about the boss being engaged and having a kid!?"
However her loud voice and the sound of the door slamming against the wall startled Ryu, who's wings lit up with blue fire, although it only lasted for a couple of seconds.
Then chaos erupted again.
"Blue fire!? He can light them up with blue fire!?" Clutter screeched.
"Holy…"
"Alright shut up!" Aqua screeched, effectively ending the chaos. Once that was done, she carefully approached Ryu, trying not to get the kid more scared that he already looked after everyone started screaming. "Hey, Ryu, just out of curiosity— you have two dads, right?" Ryu nodded slowly. "Right. And what's your other dad's name? I haven't heard a peep of him out of Hawks, he's a meanie, you know?"
Ryu slowly looked up at Tokoyami again. Dark Shadow had come out after all the noise and screams, and the three of them shared a look before Ryu turned to Aqua again to answer.
"Touya."
"Hell yes!" Hana said, all of a sudden looking extremely excited. "I told you he had someone with the name Tou and a fire emoji registered on his phone! Pay up Clutter, told you it wasn't Endeavor."
Clutter mumbled something under his breath before putting out his wallet and passing a couple of bills to Hana.
This caused Ryu to laugh.
"Grandpa? No, daddy has grandpa as 'Dumpster Fire' on his phone."
Everyone politely ignored the nickname, although some did laugh, and instead focused on the other more important part of that sentence.
"Grandpa?..." Yamamoto repeated, stunned. "Endeavor is your grandpa?..."
Tokoyami, who apparently finally had enough, sighted. "Dark Shadow."
The Quirk obeyed, grabbing Ryu with little to no effort, causing the kid to also beam at them, happily greeting them with a "Uncle shadow!" as the three of them left the rest area, walking into one of the private offices and closing the door behind them.
Apparently, that was as much info as they would be able to get out of Ryu for today. Although that was more than enough.
"Okay, are you saying the boss landed one of Endeavor's kids!? Damn, he's sly…" Aqua mumbled.
"It's clearly the one with the white hair, right? The one who's a doctor?"
"Please, Pixie." Clutter said. "That's too obvious. What if it's the other one, the pro?"
"Shoto?" Aqua looked at Clutter as if he'd lost his mind. "As in, the one who's the same age as Tsukoyomi?"
"I'm just saying, maybe that's why he kept it a secret. It would be widely controversial if he had a kid with Endeavor's 21 year old son."
"What if he's lying and it's the daughter?" Hana quietly suggested.
"What if he's lying and his dad's name isn't Touya?" Clutter asked now.
The debate started. Aqua, however, was not satisfied and instead walked over to one of the computers and entered the database, willing to do some research.
30 minutes later, everyone was still arguing about which one of the Todorokis had Hawks landed, but one of Aqua's arrows made out of water loudly creating a dent on the wall caused everyone to shut up.
Aqua looked as if she'd seen a ghost, a haunted look on her face. Even her blue hair seemed to be more wild than usual.
Silently, she picked up a marker and walked over to the board they had dedicated to gather clues about who was Hawks dating, where Hana had freed up a space for a small betting poll. She added a fourth column and labeled it 'Dabi' before adding one line to the space, indicating that's who she was betting for.
Then she stepped away and put down the marker.
As always, Clutter was the first one to contradict her.
"Uh, Aqua, what the fuck? As in, Dabi the ex member of the League that was never caught?"
She nodded.
"Boss likes bad boys, that much was clear since the day he showed up with a black leather jacket that was obviously not his. Besides, why do you think he was never caught?"
"Not to burst your bubble or anything, but Ryu said Endeavor was his grandpa."
"Exactly, Pixie! While you were busy arguing, I did my research. So get this: Endeavor had another son, his eldest. I couldn't find his name, but Quirk registry says he had blue fire, and I found medical records diagnosing him with Quirk incompatibility. He wasn't fire proof, and since his fire burned hotter, it hurt him to use it. But he was reported dead years ago, before he even entered high school."
"Exactly where are you going with this?" Sora, who had also bet Natsuo was the dad, asked.
"Dabi was estimated to be around the same age Endeavor's son would be now had he lived. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Dabi seemed to have a personal grudge against Endeavor, that would explain why the boss hates him too. And last I checked, he has blue fire, Endeavor's blue eyes and, oh, isn't his entire body severely burnt too? Now, I wonder, why would he be burnt if any fire user is fire resistant? Unless he so coincidentally happened to have Quirk incompatibility too.. "
"You're crazy. That's a stretch."
Aqua huffed, send a splash of water right at Cutter's face.
"Fine, but I'm not buying you guys anything once I win the bet! Besides, that would explain why Ryu's fire is blue too."
"Or…" Clutter continued, looking at least a little annoyed at the fact that Aqua splashed him in the face with water. "Maybe, you're just half right and Dabi is Endeavor's lost son or whatever, but he's not the dad, and the kid just so happened to inherit the same factor that makes his fire blue?"
Aqua splashed him in the face again, but this time, she made sure to throw a small piece of ice in there, just for good measure.
Eventually, Tokoyami and Ryu went out to the break room again, Tokoyami politely ignoring the board that held the betting poll. At this point, everyone got the message to stop trying to interrogate Ryu.
Turns out the kid was a ray of sunshine and as much of a social butterfly as Hawks was.
And speaking of him, he went in through the balcony almost at the same time a sketchy guy came into the break room, wearing a black turtleneck, a mask, and back shades. His entire face was covered, but Aqua frantically hit Clutter in the arm upon realizing who he probably was.
They looked at each other for a moment, and then Ryu jumped from the sofa and barreled straight into the sketchy guy.
"Dad!"
Hawks approached them then, smiling softly.
"Hey, hot stuff. Why are you here?"
"Came to pick up the little bird." he answered, ruffling the kid's hair.
"Oh, great. I was actually just coming to check on him since Rumi is busy and said she wouldn't be able to come take him back home."
"Have any more meetings?"
"Yep." Hawks answered. "I managed to get away for now, but I have to get back soon. I'll be back home in a couple of hours though."
"Good, because it's your turn to make dinner."
Hawks whined.
"Can't we just have fried chicken?"
Ryu brightened up at that. "Yes, I want chicken!"
"We had fried chicken yesterday, you little cannibals. So no, you're cooking."
Both Hawks and Ryu pouted, clearly not happy about being denied their fried chicken.
"Touyaaaaa, you're so mean!"
"I swear, sometimes I think I'm dealing with two five year olds and not one…" he mumbled, picking Ryu up.
Aqua, who was watching along with everyone in the break room, frantically hit Cutter's arm excitedly upon catching sight of what looked like a patch of burnt skin on the space between the guy's turtle neck and mask that was uncovered when he picked Ryu up.
"Alright, I'll see you home, birdie."
"Okay, see you hot stuff."
Hawks leaned in, giving Touya a quick peck on the lips, kissing Ryu's forehead too before the two were off.
Hawks was about to leave again too, but a sudden wall of ice, courtesy of Aqua, stopped him.
"So, can we all agree I win the bet? Boss, I won, right?"
Hawks blinked in surprise, looking over at Aqua.
"What?"
"Ryu's dad." she said, pointing at the board. "It's Dabi, isn't it?"
"Uh…" Hawks looked at Tokoyami, who gave him a look of defeat and gently shook his head.
"It's alright, we don't care if he was an ex villain because he's the one actually getting you to sleep and take days off. Now, am I right or…?"
Hawks' eyes flickered towards the board now, taking in the betting poll at the corner, and he snorted.
"Damn, Aqua is about to be rich, she was the only one who got it right. Maybe you should have considered being a detective instead."
"So I'm right!?"
"I'm sure I don't need to specify that no one can know about this. We'll talk about it when I get back because I have a meeting to get back to, but for now, whoever says anything gets extra desk duty." and then he waved and made his exit through the balcony, which was now not being blocked by Aqua.
Tokoyami had also strategically made his exit now while everyone was distracted, both leaving behind absolute chaos.
The last thing he heard was a loud:
"Pay up, fuckers! This girl is treating herself to a fancy dinner with her girlfriend tonight!"
Which was followed by several groans.
