Chapter 1: what about-

Chapter Text

The day had started on a bad foot and got worse from there. Burnt her bagel, the coffee tasted awful, spilled it on her favorite shirt, and now Saitama was queasy. She’d already thrown up once, and someone passing by had joked about morning sickness.

And the worst part was she had missed a couple of periods, her breasts were sore, nothing fit-

“Saitama!” and here we go, yet another scoop of terrible on top of everything else. Her stomach roiled as the ninja almost preened in front of her.

“Hold up dude-” the last bit of her morning bagel came up and out into a street trash can.

“Are you okay?” he was next to her now. If he made one comment about pregnancy or a hangover, she was going to- “do you have a concussion?”

The strangest part was how honest his concern was.

“Sonic.” she wiped her mouth, grimacing at the sour taste in her mouth. “Do I look different to you?”

“Huh?” he blinked. “Like what?”

“Like my boobs, do they look bigger to you?” they felt bigger.

He blinked again, looking at her t-shirt as if this was the first time he’d noticed her breasts, a blush staining his cheeks.

“Oh fuck this.” she (gently) pushed him aside, going to the convenience store across the street for a test. Might as well find out.

The 100 yen ones were the best, and she took it to the little ladies room inside the store to use it. She could not be pregnant…

There was a shuffle on the other side of the stall door, and a bottle of lemon soda was pushed towards her.

“Drink it slowly.” sonic said, plopping down on the floor, back to the stall door as if guarding it. “It’ll help settle your stomach.”

It was a fancy brand too, nothing that Saitama would spend money on. “Did you steal this?”

“I’m not a thief.” he huffed. “I paid for it.”

Free soda was free soda, and it got the taste of stomach acid out of her mouth. There was a rustle and a sleeve of cookies was offered from under the door.

“Digestive biscuits.” he explained, sounding like he had one in his mouth. For cookies they were not very sweet, but with the soda they actually did help her queasiness.
Her phone’s timer chirped and she looked at the test.

“Fuck!”

“What’s wrong?”

There’s a plus sign on the test.” Sonic was silent. “I’m pregnant.”

“Oh. huh.” he munched thoughtfully before offering her another biscuit.

“Heck. How am I going to take care of a baby? I can barely take care of myself. Wait, why did you follow me in here? This is the ladies’ room”

“I- anyway, do you have any family that can help?”

“None that would care. I’m going to be a mom. I need to get a blood test to make sure. Shit.”

“Will you be okay if I leave? Are you sure you don't have a concussion?” there was a note of concern in his voice and she missed it.

“Yeah, it’s just morning sickness. Not a concussion.”

“Morning sickness.” he sounded thoughtful. “Okay. I’ll find you later.”

“What?” she opened the door, but he was gone.

He did find her later, letting himself into her apartment through the open balcony doors. It was hot and she was feeling queasy again, sprawled out on the floor.

“If you’re here to fight, I don’t feel like it.”

“No, I brought you supplies.” He went into the kitchen like he owned the place, setting his shopping onto the counter. This was suspicious, what was he up to? She wandered in behind him to see what he brought.

Out of one bag came pregnancy books, pamphlets for family services and such. Oh, why didn’t she think of that? That was a good idea! The other bag was full of small jars and baggies of plant material, scribbled instructions stapled to them.

“I went to a traditional medicine pharmacy.” he sounded almost proud. The owner had been more than happy to show him what he needed and load him up. “These are for morning sickness, this is to help build up blood. This is for the baby if she doesn’t have a good appetite-” he lined them up on the counter in a neat row. “If you’re still feeling sick to your stomach, I can make you some tea for it.”

“Dude, this is nice and all, but why?” she shouldn’t ask, but she was a little confused. Going from rival to.. What? And he was avoiding looking at her as he filled the kettle. “You don’t have family to help you.”

Weird, but it was better than coming to pick a fight… fight… shit. Genos.

She hadn’t told Genos about the baby yet.

There were familiar steps running towards the door, then it flew off the hinges. Genos burst in, weapons armed and ready for a fight. “Master! I sensed-”

“Genos, the door!” Sonic had jumped in front of Saitama, sword out and ready for a fight. “Stop, no fighting inside the house! Genos, Sonic is just visiting!”

“... visiting?” She took in the herbs on the counter, the baby books, Sonic’s music video clothes instead of armor. She turned and put the door back on its hinges. “What is this about?”

“Genos… “ Saitama sighed. “Let's make tea and sit down. I have something important to tell you.”

“You’re… you’re not taking him as a student-”

“Sit. tea.” she nodded to sonic, patting him on his hip before turning away and missing his blush.

Sonic’s tea was a bit spicy, tasting a bit like a Christmas cake. Even if it didn’t do much for nausea, it did taste pretty good. He had even made genos a cup and they all sat at the table. Genos was in her stiff seiza that would look more proper in a kimono, sonic hugging one leg to his chest. This was nice, this would be nicer if the two weren’t staring daggers at each other.

“Genos.” she snapped to attention. “Genos, I’m pregnant.”

There was a strange squealing noise, like her fans were going into overdrive, her eyes going huge with delight. “That’s amazing!”

“No, it’s a huge pain in the ass! I need to check with the HA about pregnancy leave and insurance, I have to find a doctor! And baby stuff is expensive! We’ll have to up the couponing to stock up on diapers and- what else do babies need? Heck. and this place!” she gestured to the small room. “It’s tight enough with just us two!”

“I’ll be happy to help you in any way you need.” Genos declared adoringly. Sonic was strangely quiet, watching them with an unreadable expression. “What about the father? It’s not-” she stared at the ninja in horror.

“It’s no one either of you know. And he’d prolly not do much anyway. But sonic has offered to help out.” for some reason. He was red again, staring at the ceiling like it was interesting. Was this more than just a rival thing? Naw. some weird ninja code of honor or something against fighting pregnant women. Or something territorial. He was much too pretty for her. God he was pretty.

“Huh.” the cyborg declared, back to glaring at him. “Is that why he brought over all the witch doctor stuff? Master, you should not use unregulated herbs.”

“It's perfectly good medicine.” sonic huffed. “I use them all the time.”

“We don’t know what’s in them, you could have poisoned them for all we know!” her weapons were starting to spin up.

“AND LASTLY-” Saitama interrupted, “no fighting in the apartment! Or at all! It’s not good for the baby!”

“Of course!” she agreed quickly, weapons going dark.

“...shit. We’re really doing this, aren’t we?” she rubbed her head with both hands. There was too much to think about.

“Should I cook dinner? I bought chicken and vegetables.” sonic offered, as if it was the only response he could think of.

“/I/ will cook the master’s supper. You might poison it.”

“I would never poison food /I/ cooked.”

“Genos, you can cook supper since sonic bought the food.” if she hadn’t lost her hair, it’d be falling out now.

“I can go and let you two talk about it more.” He started to stand up, only stopped by Saitama's hand on his arm.

“No, we should at least feed you. “ he looked like he could use a couple of meals anyway. His build was athletic but thin. For the moment, she admired the line of his neck and the way his collar bones dipped below the silvery fabric of his shirt. His eyes were wide at her touch, pulse jumping at his throat.

“Okay.”

“Go grab a couple of the books, we might as well go over them while dinner cooks. Make some sort of plan.” sigh.

They were really doing this.
