Work Text:
♡ ♡ ♡
Two rings after it had begun is when Yoongi picks up his phone and presses it immediately to his ear in some sense of concern. He hushes Holly - his four year old brown poodle - who was beneath him panting in excitement as he walks through the entrance of the small apartment suite. It wasn’t too much; it was on the eleventh floor with one bedroom, a simple bathroom connected, a kitchen suite, little dining area, a common room, and a balcony with a decent view to it. Yoongi was happy enough with it. He was thrilled enough to come home to the apartment as it had been an exhausting day at work. It took a long time, but he and Namjoon had finally gotten the last few layers of a track done that had been irritating him for quite some time.
Yoongi feels like he's at a standstill, every day seems to be the same to him. He would always wake up a quarter after nine, shower, go to work for eight hours a day (sometimes even ten hours if he had much more to work on), and then come home, feed his dog, find something to eat himself, and then sleep until the next day and so forward.
Even though he feels that his life is perhaps boring, he does have something to look forward to almost every night. It’s usually right on time, but for some reason it is still rather early in the evening when he answers the phone.
“Hello?”
“Hyung.”
A soft smile appears among Yoongi’s stoic expression, and he presses the phone to his ear while it rests on the top of his shoulder. Shrugging off his solid black trench coat, he hangs it up on the rack, mindlessly tossing his keys and wallet onto the dining table as he walks through the small corridor of the dimmed apartment. He holds the phone steadily as he crouches to give touch starved Holly the attention he truly deserves.
“Hey baby,” He murmurs softly, so soft that he hopes Jeongguk understands just how in love he is with him when saying that. “You’re calling early tonight.”
Hearing Jeongguk’s voice somehow always releases the tension and stress in any day he has, even if it was a normal day, or a good day at that. Under the circumstances they’re currently in though, getting to talk to his boyfriend of three years every night is the only thing he can grasp onto for a while.
A small chuckle from the end of the line interrupts Yoongi’s thoughts, and Yoongi feels his heart beating heavily within his chest. One day he’s sure that it’s going to explode just from the way he just feels so, so, so much for the younger. “I know, I just wanted to hear your voice a bit earlier tonight.”
This is all they can get for a while longer, because Jeongguk is currently in America.
He left four months ago after getting a promotion with his job in filming, and that promotion required lots and lots of traveling. When he had brought this up to Yoongi about half a year ago, all Yoongi could be was happy for Jeongguk because they both knew that this was what he'd been wanting to do with his career from the very beginning of their relationship.
Yoongi just didn’t realize he would be gone for so long at a time.
Jeongguk reassured him multiple times that he would normally never be gone this long, but his boss wanted to test his limits to the best of his abilities, for exposure in the field . That meant he would have to live in London for three months, and then New York for the other three. They could both agree that this whole process had somewhat of a strain on their relationship as days inched closer to their departing, but they made a promise to one another to talk every single day. The same time of the day would be convenient for both of their busy work schedules - two hours after Yoongi got off work, and an hour of Jeongguk's free time in the mornings.
It’s been quite strenuous at times, but Yoongi feels a wave of happiness when he hears Jeongguk’s beautiful voice, and sometimes even turning it to a video call just to see how effortlessly pretty Jeongguk is even from miles and miles away. As much as Yoongi misses him, he constantly reminds himself that they only have less than two months to see one another again.
“Have you been awake for a long time then?” Yoongi asks, pressing a kiss to Holly’s snout before grabbing his empty bowl on the floor. “Should I video call you instead?”
“No, no,” Jeongguk quickly replies, and if Yoongi is correct, there’s a tinge of panic within his voice. That edge in his voice that only appears when he seems stressed about a particular situation. “I uh, I had to wake up earlier this morning because I ran out of Pop-Tarts. I’m at the store now.”
“Ah,” Yoongi hums as he fills Holly’s bowl with two scoops of food and sets it back on the floor. He laughs at the sight of his fluffy child harboring it immediately. “Pop-Tarts, huh. What flavor this time?”
“You should know this, hyung.”
“Right,” He moves to open the fridge and pulls out leftovers from the night prior and sets it on top of the counter so he can prepare it properly. “ice cream sundae. Because you know, that is definitely a breakfast food.”
Jeongguk laughs on the other side of the line, that soft gentle laugh that seems breathless, but Yoongi can just imagine the pretty smile plastered across his face. It makes his heart pound heavier than before.
“Just wait until I come back to Korea, you will totally understand and feel sorry for ever being mean to me.”
It’s Yoongi’s turn to laugh now as he leans against the counter, taking a moment to reel in this encounter with his boyfriend. He crosses his arms while one hand is still holding the phone up to his left ear. “Perhaps I will,” He speaks softly, laughter still bubbling between the two of them. “Although I think I would just like the plain and simple ones you were talking about a few days ago.”
He waits for it, because Yoongi knows it’s coming.
In 3, 2, 1…
A loud sigh abrupts from Jeongguk, and it makes Yoongi grin from ear-to-ear almost instantly.
“For the last time hyung, plain Pop-Tarts with no frosting on them at all is just an absolute sin itself!” He hears Jeongguk emphasize the “at all” strongly, and Yoongi can’t help but to laugh out loud to the point that it even makes Holly jump from where he is currently eating, his hand instantly covering his mouth in embarrassment.
They both laugh for a bit longer, but then Yoongi begins to feel it almost entirely. This happens almost every time in any duration of a call they’ve had in the past four months or so. That wallowing ache in the midst of his chest that he can’t help to feel practically every single day now. He wonders if Jeongguk feels it too, but knowing how much more emotional his boyfriend is, Yoongi has no doubt about it. The unbearable silence lasts for maybe ten seconds before Jeongguk picks up on it.
“What are you thinking about, hyung?”
There’s no help in hiding it anymore, Yoongi knows that. Jeongguk is the only person he is truly vulnerable with these days, but even then it’s hard for him to fully open up sometimes.
“I miss you, Guk.” He murmurs, room silent save for Holly is now making his way across the wood floors of the apartment.
A few more moments of timid silence passes by before Yoongi hears, “I miss you too. So much.”
He sighs quietly, taking a few steps into the common area, the space being half empty still.
“It just… Things haven’t been the same since you left. You know I love you more than anything, and I am so happy you get to do the thing you absolutely love. I guess I just- I see this apartment that we both got together, and it feels empty to me. I can’t seem to finish putting it together, because well-” He picks up a picture frame that contains a photo of them when they first moved into this apartment. Nothing but absolute euphoria was glorified upon the two of them when the property manager handed them the keys. They worked so hard for this apartment, spent so much money, but it was entirely worth it when Yoongi could experience the happiness radiating off the two of them, to see that precious bunny smile Jeongguk only has when he’s super excited about something. It will always be one of his favorite memories. “This is our home, you know? I just miss you. It’s been hard.”
Yoongi hears a soft intake of breath coming from Jeongguk’s end. He imagines the other having that gentle tint of pink dashing across those puffy cheeks of his just as they always are in the morning after waking up. Just as Yoongi would when he would wake up just a few minutes before Jeongguk did so he could see him sleep peacefully against the fluffiness of the pillow he laid on next to him.
“Yoongi.” His voice breaks, and before Yoongi could say anything to comfort his boyfriend, he hears three knocks on the front door.
Of course, Yoongi thinks to himself, out of all the times someone could knock, it would be now when he’s talking to Jeongguk.
“Hey baby, just one second. Someone’s at the door.” He murmurs softly, a way to let his boyfriend know that he’s still there and he won’t abandon him.
He can hear Jeongguk sniffling on the other line as Yoongi walks towards the door after setting the framed picture of them on the coffee table, phone still pressed to his ear. Holly decides to beat him to it though as he sniffs at the door. “Who’s here, Holly?” He asks his pet with gentle enthusiasm, and politely moves him to the side although Holly seems to insist on getting to whoever is on the other side of the door.
Yoongi isn’t sure who would be at the door at this time of the night, but when he does open the door, his heart feels like it’s about to burst out of his chest when he sees Jeon Jeongguk.
Jeongguk, his sweet Jeongguk -- standing there in the flesh, phone pressed up to his ear, and so many tears streaming down his cheeks. An assorted bouquet of yellow flowers in his hand with that sweet endearing smile of his (that Yoongi missed so much) . There’s also a suitcase by his side, and a backpack on his shoulders.
“Yoongi hyung,” He whispers, eyes giving full attention to Yoongi as he stands there in the doorframe, his own eyes wide in shock. “Yoongi.” He whispers his name again, as if that is the only thing he’s able to say at the moment. Like a scratched record on loop. He looks down at the bouquet of flowers, and then holds them out shakily towards Yoongi. “I got you daffodils, you know, because your birthday is in March, and you look good in yellow although you never really wear it, but I dunno, I’m-”
His own body moves before his mind realises, and Yoongi cannot help but wrap his arms around the love of his life. He’d be damned if those daffodils were to be squashed, but he hasn’t seen Jeongguk in nearly five months. Jeongguk allows it though, and after a second or two, he wraps his arms around Yoongi’s waist, warmth seeping between the both of them. It feels surreal, having Jeongguk right here- in the flesh, holding him with so much yearning and absolute love. It doesn’t occur to Yoongi that this is actually real until he feels his phone slip from his hand and onto the wooden floor in the confinements of their apartment. He’s sure he can feel Holly pawing at the both of them, but Yoongi can’t seem to think about anything else when he feels that familiar lump in his throat, one that he hasn’t felt in a long time. He allows it to happen though once he notices that a couple of tears had already been shed onto the sleeve of Jeongguk’s sweatshirt.
He’s here.
Right here.
Jeongguk is here.
He buries himself into Jeongguk’s strong hold when he realizes it fully, and is unable to stop crying as the emotions fully set in, and engraved into his mind.
“Yoongi hyung, hey- ” He hears Jeongguk whisper, in such a soft manner that he seems to be cautious enough not to make Yoongi uncomfortable over the tears that are streaming down his cheeks. “Yoongi, please look at me. Please? ” Jeongguk murmurs against his ear, pulling away; that seems to be so hard for Yoongi to justify in doing so. He’s always hated being vulnerable in times such as these, but with Jeongguk- it’s always been different. He takes a deep breath, and slowly pulls himself back, but he keeps his arms around Jeongguk’s neck to make sure he doesn’t leave again.
When they finally are able to look at each other again, Yoongi can’t help but to let the overwhelming feelings wash over him again. Little whimpers escape his lips and his shoulders begin to shake once he really takes in the view of his boyfriend standing there in the doorframe.
His hair is longer, but he already knew that from the past calls through video chat that Jeongguk had wanted to grow his hair out. Right now, it’s set up into a half-made bun and he looks so incredibly handsome. He still has the same features that Yoongi can remember from being close up; the scar on his cheek, those elegant brown eyes that are still full of tears just as Yoongi’s are. His fingers move from Jeongguk’s neck to his cheek, thumb grazing across the shape of his broad nose that Yoongi instantly fell in love with, and swipes at the stained tears on his cheeks. He moves his fingers to dance across his lips, to press gently against the mole right underneath them. Another feature Yoongi adores, possibly his favorite place to kiss as well.
He can’t help but to feel the bundle of emotions seeping out of him, but so much of it is pure happiness of course.
“You asshole,” He murmurs, eyes full of love as he looks at Jeongguk with a gaze so intent. “You show up just as I was getting emotional.” He lets out a shaky laugh, just as Jeongguk shrugs shamelessly, that bunny smile coming into play and pulls Yoongi further into his embrace.
“It’s not my fault you chose that moment to get emotional as I was literally walking up to our door.” Jeongguk laughs in a hushed voice, but he’s crying just as much as Yoongi is, possibly more. Yoongi continues to wipe the tears that fall down his boyfriend’s cheeks, and pushes at the back of his head as a hint. Bickering can come later, all he wants right now is to kiss and touch his boyfriend in absolutely any way he desires.
“Just kiss me please,” He pleads with a soft murmur, eyes focusing on Jeongguk for a second and then letting his gaze fall to the gentle plush of his lips. “I haven’t kissed you in so long.”
Jeongguk obliges almost immediately, letting his arms somehow pull Yoongi closer as he dips down slightly to meet Yoongi halfway, and their lips instantly touch with such fervor. They’ve probably kissed what feels at least a thousand times, but Yoongi will never get over how good it feels to kiss Jeongguk like this. Like it’s their first time, every single time.
Yoongi’s hands become pliant against Jeongguk’s cheek and chest, unable to stop moving, he can’t seem to get enough of his lover kissing him with so much warmth and feeling. His lips against Jeongguk remind him of just how much he loves Jeongguk more than anything in this entire world. He lets it linger for a moment before slipping his tongue against the other’s lips, asking for any sort of entrance if the younger would let him, in which he does until a familiar set of paws press against the two of them, and whines follow almost promptly from below.
With a gentle hint of laughter, Yoongi pulls away first, and chews at his own lip for a moment as his arms wrap back around Jeongguk’s neck. “Please say hi to Holly, so that I can keep touching you afterwards.”
Jeongguk laughs with that bright smile, presses a kiss to Yoongi’s cheek before pulling away completely and giving Holly his utmost attention. It’s the most innocent interaction to see Holly licking at his face and Jeongguk sitting on the floor, unable to stop laughing and cooing at their dog. Yoongi’s heart swoons at the sight of his two favorite beings, but he decides to take the flowers from Jeongguk’s distracted hands and picks up his suitcase from the hallway so he can finally shut their front door.
When Jeongguk presses one last kiss to Holly’s snout, before he gives his utmost attention to his boyfriend once more. Holly seems to be happy enough for now as he prances away into somewhere else inside their apartment.
With the realization that Jeongguk is actually here, the atmosphere seems to have changed suddenly as Yoongi fully takes in Jeongguk’s figure. Although Jeongguk is wearing a black crewneck with sweatpants, he just knows his figure underneath that loose clothing looks incredible and he yearns to see it so much. From the way Jeongguk is gazing at him up and down as well, Yoongi could feel the similar suggestion of his boyfriend as well.
Jeongguk shrugs off his backpack and places it directly onto the wooden floor, walking towards Yoongi who takes a few steps backwards until his waist meets the couch behind them. He still has the bouquet of daffodils in his hands which Jeongguk gently takes hold of, and replaces them with his own fingers, interlocking them together and pressing their hands close in such warmth and delicacy.
Yoongi’s eyes darken, full of eagerness as he looks into Jeongguk’s eyes, and relishes the way Jeongguk presses their foreheads together. Aside from their shallow breathing between them, it is quiet all around them. Familiar strong hands eventually find Yoongi’s waist, and slides down to his bum so that Jeongguk can properly pick him up. This gives Yoongi an advantage by letting his legs wrap around the middle of Jeongguk’s waist, and he allows himself to be carried away by the absolute love of his life...
Yoongi lets himself be pressed down into the soft silk sheets of their bed that will eventually begin to smell like Jeongguk again as much as it does Yoongi, letting their fingers intertwine as well as their bodies and souls. Jeongguk takes his time with Yoongi, allowing articles of clothing slowly disappear one by one, and the feeling of his flesh against his own reminds Yoongi of just how much he is in love with Jeon Jeongguk.
♡
Thankfully, Jeongguk came back home the night of Yoongi’s last work day in the week, so they both got to sleep as long as they wanted to without any problems. While Yoongi is used to waking up around the same time everyday, Jeongguk, is not. He’s sure that Jeongguk will be experiencing some massive jetlag for the next week or so until his normal schedule comes back into routine, so Yoongi wants to make sure he feels welcomed home by making him his favorite korean food - rice cake soup and dumplings.
Yoongi can’t find his own clothing from last night, so he just picks up his underwear and Jeongguk’s hoodie that was laying on the end of the bed to cook in as he begins to prepare the ingredients, as well as drinking his usual morning coffee. Twenty or so minutes pass before he feels a familiar set of arms wrap around his waist, and a head resting against his shoulder.
“Mornin’,” Yoongi smiles at the way Jeongguk’s voice is groggy and deep, something he forgot how much he endeared. He flips over the dumpling in the frypan as he takes another sip of his black coffee.
“Hi baby,” He says quietly, he sets the spatula and mug down before turning around and into Jeongguk’s wholesome embrace. His dark hair is completely down now, so now he can take into effect just how long Jeongguk’s hair has gotten when he presses a kiss to his lips and pushes a strand of loose hair behind his ear. “I’m making your favorite.”
Jeongguk lets a tired grin spread across his face, and Yoongi takes in all of the lovebites marked on his neck and down his chest as underwear is the only thing his lover is wearing at the moment. “I thought that’s what I smelled.” He murmurs as he kisses Yoongi again with more affirmation.
Every time they’ve kissed since last night, Yoongi still can’t believe it’s actually him. He feels like this must be a fever dream, and he’s about to wake up any moment now, but he doesn’t. He watches Jeongguk with an intent gaze as he presses his hands onto his chest, one trailing up to Jeongguk’s jawline. His thumb presses against that familiar mole underneath his lips and he smiles. “How?”
It seems to catch Jeongguk off guard as he furrows his eyebrows, but he stays silent so Yoongi can continue.
“I mean,” Yoongi says sheepishly, cheeks burning with a slight tinge of pink, “How are you back so soon?”
“I wanted to come home.”
“Don’t you have a job you have to finish?”
Jeongguk averts his gaze at this, which makes Yoongi feel a sudden sense of guilt within him. If he is back home this early when he’s supposed to be away for another two months, that could only mean…
“I got laid off.” Jeongguk mumbles, eyes quickly on Yoongi once again who widens his eyes in response. Had Jeongguk given up on his dream career just like that?
Like it was easy to drop it and go?
Yoongi feels his chest constrict, a tightening feeling to what seems to be frustration. Frustration that Jeongguk would leave Yoongi here for months, only to be laid off.
“Jeon Jeongguk, are-”
“Hyung, hyung, let me explain please,” He pleads, pulling Yoongi away from the counter and turning down the heat of the stove so the soup doesn’t burn. “I talked to my boss, we had a whole conversation the other night. I thought I was going to be happy, we both did. I’ve been working towards this all my life practically. We both know that.” Jeongguk runs a hand through his hair, although his eyes never leave Yoongi’s. “But I don’t know, after the second month, I’ve just… it didn’t feel as grand to me or something. I didn’t know if something was wrong with me, or if I was just in a weird funk. I did it, of course I did it, but I just didn’t have the same amount of passion I usually do.”
“Guk…” Yoongi says out of empathy, his heart hurting. He never knew how much his lover struggled. Jeongguk shakes his head, so Yoongi stays quiet and lets him continue.
“My boss knew something was up with me, and we talked about it multiple times across seas. The last time was when I told him I just don’t want to have a career where I travel too much because I have, well, my own little family I want to tend to. My boyfriend and our dog.” He chews his bottom lip out of nervousness, a tic he’s always had since they’ve met and Yoongi keeps his attention only on Jeongguk so that he knows that he is listening.
“I thought this is what I wanted Yoongi hyung - I really thought so - but in reality I want to have a career where I don’t have to be on the other side of the world to talk to you. I want to be here, in bed with you- I want to... You know, wake up with you and Holly. I want you, Yoongi. I want my life to be with you always by my side. So; he gave me my old position back, where I can stay here in Korea, and the only time I would most likely leave would be if we went on vacation together. I was scared to tell you, but when you opened up to me last night about the apartment, I just had a feeling that you might understand, hyung. I just want to build a life with you, nothing else.”
Yoongi is speechless, and he isn’t sure how long he stays quiet but as he listens to Jeongguk say all of this, he can’t help but wonder.
“Why does this almost sound like a proposal?” He asks hesitantly, a tinge of awkward laughter appearing as he notices Jeongguk pulling a crinkling silver bag from the counter that Yoongi has never seen before, and watches the younger’s cheeks sprinkle with shades of pink all over.
The next thing that Yoongi sees is Jeongguk bending down onto one knee, and holding the small packaging of what says Pop-Tarts in blue font within the confinements of his hands.
“I know this isn’t a ring, and I know we might have a long way to go before an actual proposal, but I want you in my life forever Yoongi.” Jeongguk says with such raw passion that it’s making that lump come back within Yoongi’s throat that shows he may cry all over again. “I love you so much to the point that I bought you those awful pop-tarts with no frosting on the top. That’s how much I want to marry you one day, only if you would let me. So, uh,” Jeongguk laughs quietly, and he opens the packaging to reveal the plain looking strawberry pop-tart that indeed, has no frosting of any sorts on it. “Will you pop-tart me?”
“Guk,” Yoongi begins.
“And possibly marry me one day.”
“Gukkie,” Yoongi endearingly says, unable to hide his smile as Jeongguk becomes a blubbering mess.
“Only if you want to, I’m sorry I kinda, um, sprung this onto you out of no-”
“Jeongguk,” Yoongi says with complete assertion to catch his boyfriend’s attention. He decides to get onto his knees as well, so that he can be at eye level with Jeongguk when he presses their hands together, and Yoongi leans into bite the pastry in Jeongguk’s other hand. “Of course I will, I’ll follow you anywhere you’d wanted to go. I love you so much, Jeon Jeongguk.” He can’t help the corniness seeping off of the both of them in their kitchen, but it doesn’t matter because they both tumble into a heaping mess once again as Jeongguk laughs softly before kissing Yoongi with so much fondness and tears streaming down his cheeks.
“I love you too, Min Yoongi.” He whispers against his lips, before taking them into pleasure again. Yoongi could never get used to the way he is absolutely head over heels for this man. “Even if you don’t see pop-tarts as a breakfast food.”
Yoongi can’t help but laugh against him, the warmth radiating off Jeongguk causing the older to press closer into his embrace. “I can’t believe you just somewhat proposed to me with a pop-tart.”
Although Yoongi says that and hears his soulmate’s sweet endearing laughter once more, he comes to the conclusion that he wouldn’t want a proposal from Jeongguk in any other way.
