Two Million Reasons

Summary:

At the very first Peace Conference between the Armed Detective Agency, the Port Mafia, and the Special Devision, Dazai decides he needs a break from the overwhelming clash of his many worlds. All he wants is a moment away from it all, but Chuuya is determined to finally get some answers. If all of their tension and anger and hatred come out...what will be left?

Notes:

This is my first attempt at writing a fic that isn't reader insert. I hope you enjoy it!

Work Text:

A fist connected to Dazai’s jaw with a sickening crack. Chuuya’s fist to be exact. Dazai grasped his face, the pain throbbing against his cheeks and the taste of blood faint, but still present, on his tongue. It was a taste he’d grown accustomed to over time and it didn’t bother him.

Still clutching his jaw, he turned to see who the assailant was, although at that point he already had a pretty good idea of who. A smile began to crack across his face as he took in Chuuya, who was now lightly shaking out his fist.

Dazai wiped the blood from his lip and let out a small laugh.

“I bet you’re pretty proud of that, huh?” he said, his tone lighthearted.

Chuuya narrowed his eyes in a glare at him. He was void of any joy or pride. Dazai was slightly taken aback by this.

Still, he couldn’t stop himself from being snarky towards Chuuya.

“You know, I’m pretty sure punching people isn’t a part of this whole peace conference thing,” Dazai said, reaching over to pat Chuuya on the head. These patronizing and antagonizing gestures and words built the foundation of their relationship. But Chuuya simply stepped out of the way, not paying any mind to Dazai now.

The peace conference had been decided upon by the Armed Detective Agency, the Port Mafia, and the Special Division. The goal was to create a plan to maintain peace and order within the city and decide on how each organization could best operate without getting in the other’s way. Dazai, however, needed to get away from it all for a moment. Seeing all these different pieces of his life mesh together was a bit overwhelming. He had taken off down a road and just kept walking. He was under the impression he was far enough away to not be found, but clearly, that was not the case.

“It’s all bullshit,” Chuuya said, his arms crossed and his gaze down. “We’ll pretend to be peaceful for a few weeks, and then we’ll go back to shooting at each other. That’s the only way we know.”

“The only way we know…” Dazai repeated. “You’re probably right about that.”

Chuuya jerked his head up and narrowed his eyes at Dazai again.

“That’s funny hearing you say it though,” he said, his tone biting, “considering how you left the Port Mafia and turned your life around. Seems we all have to stick to what we know except for you.”

“Is that why you punched me in the face?” Dazai laughed.

“There’s a million reasons I punched you in the face and even after that, I’d have a million more.”

“Aw, that really hurts my feelings, Chuuya,” Dazai said, grasping his chest for added dramatic effect. “Besides, you were the one that said it. Can’t be mad at me for agreeing.”

“I can do whatever I want,” Chuuya said, trying to sound firm, but actually sounding more pouty.

There was a silence that lingered between the two of them for a moment. Chuuya was thinking of how else he could knock Dazai down a few pegs, and Dazai was thinking about more ways to antagonize his former partner in crime.

“Do I get to guess some of the other reasons?” Dazai said after a moment.

“The what ?”

“You said you had a million reasons,” Dazai started, “No wait, two million reasons why you punched me. I wanna see if I can guess a few.”

Chuuya rolled his eyes and walked over to Dazai.

“You think everything is a game, don’t you?”, he said, pushing Dazai hard on the chest.

Dazai grinned wide.

“Why not? Life is constant misery and then we die. Why not have a little fun?”

Chuuya let out a harsh laugh.

“Doesn’t seem so miserable for you. Everything seems to go your way.”

Dazai stopped to think about this for a moment. Did Chuuya really think that that was what his life was like? Easy?

“So that’s one of your reasons?” Dazai said, not wanting to think any further on the matter .

“Cut the shit,” Chuuya said, turning to walk away. “God, I should’ve just hit you and then left.”

“So why didn’t you?”

Chuuya stopped, but didn’t turn to face Dazai. He started to wonder why he ever bothered seeking Dazai out, even though he hated him so much. There was something that always pulled Chuuya in.

“I guess I was waiting for you to hit back,” he said.

“And what would be the point in that?”

Chuuya stormed back over to Dazai.

“So I could have something over you. So I could have something of my own, and not just a victory in your fucking shadow. So we could settle things and move on.”

Dazai smiled again.

“Wow, someone is feeling angsty today, huh?”

Chuuya pulled back his fist to hit again, but Dazai plucked his hat off his head and took a few steps away.

“You better give that back, you prick.”

“You know, I’ve always thought this was unfair,” Dazai said, regarding the hat in his hand.

“What, you jealous or something?” Chuuya snorted.

That set Dazai off into a fit of laughter.

“I’d never be jealous of this tacky thing,” he said. “I just think it’s unfair that I wasn’t the one to give you your entry gift.”

Chuuya’s jaw dropped. He tried to regain composure in his expression, but Dazai had already seen.

“You, the man who betrayed us, believe you should have been the one to give me a symbol of loyalty.”

“Well when you put it like that…” Dazai began, scratching the back of his neck out of discomfort.

Chuuya cleared his throat as he tried to figure out what to say.

He could just walk away…

But now he was curious about something.

“What would you have given me?”

Dazai took a moment to consider this. He regarded his own attire until something caught his eye.

He began to undo the bolo tie around his neck.

“Hey, don’t start stripping now, nobody wants to see that.”

“Are you sure?” Dazai said and winked at him.

Chuuya rolled his eyes and tried to hide the slight blush that was blooming in his cheeks.

“Also, I’m not stripping. You asked me what I would have given you….”

Dazai finished removing the bolo tie and stepped close to Chuuya.

“Come here,” he said.

Chuuya stepped back.

“What the fuck are you doing?”

Dazai stared at him like he had said something profoundly stupid.

“I’m giving it to you. Your entry gift.”

“You’re not even in the Port Mafia!”

“Anymore,” Dazai said, holding up a finger.

“That makes it even worse!” Chuuya growled at him as he snatched his hat back.

“The only person you should ever be loyal to…..is yourself,” Dazai said in a slightly sarcastic tone.

“God, do you ever take anything seriously?”

“I’m serious about giving this to you,” Dazai said, holding up the bolo tie again, “so if you don’t mind…”

Chuuya slapped Dazai’s hands away, sending the bolo tie flying into the dirt.

“I don’t want any more pieces of you than I already have to carry.”

Dazai calmly walked over to where the tie was on the ground. Instead of picking it up though, he just stared at it.

“I love a good guessing game, but I’d rather you just explain this one to me.”

“It should be obvious,” Chuuya said after a while.

“Well it’s not obvious to me.”

“Aren’t you supposed to be a great detective-“

“Goddamit” Dazai said. He sounded fed up which was strange because usually he never let anyone, especially not his enemies, see a frazzled side of him.

“I have an amazing power,” Chuuya said, speaking slowly and deliberately. “But I can only use it around you. Nobody else in the entire world can help me in that state. But you…you have no connection or obligation to me. My power is dependent on you, but I could die tomorrow and nothing would change in your world.”

Dazai’s head snapped up.

“There’s no way you actually believe that.”

“As much as I hate it, as much as I wish it weren’t so, you are the person I trust most in the world. You. A traitor and a complete asshole. You’re what I’ve got.”

Dazai walked back over to Chuuya and searched his eyes. Searched for….something unbeknownst to himself.

He let out a breath that came out as almost a laugh. “You…trust me?”

Chuuya looked down for a moment and then dared himself to meet Dazai’s eyes.

“I have to. When I use my corrupted form, I have to trust that you’ll be there.”

“And there’s nobody else you trust more?”

Chuuya felt his stomach start to flutter, but kept his eyes locked on Dazai’s.

“The Port Mafia isn’t really about trust. It’s about power, loyalty, fear, and manipulation. You’ll never know what someone else’s true intentions are there, and as soon as you reveal your own, you’re dead.”

“Don’t you think I know that?” Dazai said, cocking his head to the side. “That’s who an entire part of me is.”

“That was you in a different life,” Chuuya said . “You got a new life and I hate you for it.”

Dazai put a firm hand on Chuuya’s shoulder.

“It’s the same life. Unfortunately, I haven’t died, so it’s all the same life. Just different pieces.”

Chuuya rolled his eyes.

“You would say that, you suicidal idiot.”

“But didn’t you just say you trust that I’ll always be there when you use corrupted? What happens if I’m not? If I’m the one you trust most, and you hate me, isn’t using it just a death wish?”

“As long as you’re alive, you’ll be there.”

“And if I’m not?”

“You’ll be there.”

“Okay but what if-“

“Dazai,” Chuuya said, now putting his hand on Dazai’s arm. “You will be. And if you’re not then…then I guess that’s fine. I guess I’ll go out in a blaze of glory. I’ll fuck up the world as much as I can and then die.”

“Wow,” Dazai began, his expression gentle. “That’s…such a beautiful suicide!”

Chuuya dropped his hand and turned his back to Dazai.

He didn’t want Dazai to see the genuine hurt in his face.

“I’m not-“

“I know,” Dazai said, serious now.

“So that,” Chuuya began, letting out a deep sigh, “is why I resent you. At least a few of those reasons. Since you so desperately needed to know. Now if you’ll excuse me…”

He began to walk away, afraid to let his guard down even more.

Dazai watched him as he moved away from him. He mulled over a thought in his head, debating on whether or not to tell Chuuya.

But then he figured there’s no time like the present.

“If you think there’s no part of me that’s dependent on you, you’re dumber than that hat looks. I really figured you’d be smarter by now, but it looks like I’ll always have you beat.”

“The fuck did you say?” Chuuya growled as he turned to face Dazai, a rage building inside him.

“Well I mean, you are at the very least, a great source of entertainment for me. You’re good for that! When you get all pissed off…like right now.”

“If you’re smart, you’ll stop,” Chuuya said, his anger bubbling even more.

“Why would I stop?” Dazai laughed, “I’m having so much fun. After this conference, who knows when we’ll be able to be at each other’s throats again.”

Dazai wasn’t sure if he was picking on Chuuya because it was fun, or because he didn’t want Chuuya to leave and this was the only way he knew how to make him stay.

Chuuya tried to clear his head from the emotional whiplash of their encounter thus far. There was always such thick subtext between them hidden by only a veil of vague tension.

“If there’s something you’re trying to say to me, then say it. Otherwise, I’m leaving before this gets out of hand.”

That made Dazai laugh even louder.

“Well look who grew up and got all responsible! It’s cute to see you try to have restraint after you, ya know, punched me?”

Chuuya clenched his fists.

“I just think it’s funny,” Dazai began, “that in your little outbursts and rants about how terrible I am, you only think of yourself. It’s not even really about me, it’s all on you.

“Oh, like you spend so much time thinking about other people,” Chuuya spat, his anger still rising.

“I’m at least a good detective. I can usually figure out other’s emotions and motivations. You’re a bit harder to read than most, but it seems you can’t read me at all.”

Chuuya opened his mouth to counter, but Dazai kept speaking.

“You see, you thinking that I don’t rely on you at all is just plain stupid. Have you not done anything thinking in all that time we’ve fought together? Are you that dense?”

“You’re the hardest person in the world to read and-“

“That made be true, and perhaps intentionally so. But if you can’t see that at least some part of me relies on you, then you’ve had your eyes closed since we were kids.”

“What the fuck-“

“And furthermore,” Dazai said, walking up to Chuuya, “you can hate me all you want. But to see you pissed at me because you think I don’t need you is hilarious. You throw yourself a pity party over your own feelings of inferiority to me.”

The words hit Chuuya in the face stronger than any punch could have.

“Don’t try to act all high and righteous now, Dazai. Don’t pretend like you have any caring sentiment towards me.”

“I tried to give-“

“You tried to tie something around my neck, like a leash, to remind me that I’ll always just be a stray dog that you brought in one day. Giving me an entry gift? Bullshit. More like reminding me that you single handedly uprooted my life, dropped me, and then left.”

A silence lingered between the two of them.

“Do you believe your life was better before the Port Mafia? With the Sheep?”

Chuuya took a moment to consider this. And to consider why Dazai was asking. He knew that Dazai would find a way to weaponize his response.

“I have no idea. But as soon as you showed up, I didn’t really have any more options.”

“You could have let them kill you.”

“I suppose I could have. But I didn’t want that…”

Dazai felt a strange bubbling in his chest. An excitement, but not necessarily a comforting one. It was born of an unnerving intimacy, and he wasn’t sure whether to face it, or shrug it off with a snarky comment.

“I didn’t want that either.”

Chuuya shot Dazai a questioning look.

“You didn’t want what?”

Dazai let out a sigh, wishing that Chuuya would just put the pieces together and figure things out for himself.

“I didn’t want you to die either. I’m glad you chose us.”

“I didn’t choose you,” Chuuya said harshly, “I chose to survive. Those are very different things.”

“Well I didn’t choose to survive. And I still ended up in the same place as you.”

The tiniest bit of a mutual understanding and sympathy began to blossom between them. Just for a brief moment. But it rattled Dazai much deeper than he’d ever be able to admit.

The two of them stood there, trying to sift through everything to get to the core of whatever their problem was. Whatever their dynamic was supposed to be. Friends, enemies, partners. Their relationship lacked boundaries, but even so they always ended up more isolated from one another.

“Is that a reason?” Dazai asked, finally breaking the silence.

Chuuya threw his hands out in exasperation.

“Are you really still on that? For fuck-“

“Just answer me. Is one of the reasons why you hate me because…..because as soon as I came into your life-“

“everything changed? Everything changed and I couldn’t look back.”

Dazai began to fidget with the bandages on his arm.

“Have you ever stopped to think you had the same effect on me?”

Chuuya’s eyes widened.

“When you said you depended on me-“

“Dear Lord, you are dense,” Dazai said with a small laugh.

“Just say what you want to say-“

“You’ve saved me before. Maybe you don’t give yourself credit for it. You don’t remember when I was almost poisoned? You ended up being quite the Prince Charming,” Dazai said in as lighthearted and casual a tone as he could muster.

Chuuya snorted.

“Yeah a real Prince. But instead of kissing you awake, I crashed into you and then passed out.”

Dazai felt heat began to creep across his face upon hearing Chuuya mention kissing. He wasn’t sure why it made him feel….something.

“Still, that’s just one time though.”

“All those times we’ve fought together, it’s taken both of us. I would have loved to accomplish everything by myself but I don’t have the raw power you do.”

Chuuya knew he should say something, but couldn’t think of a response.

“As much as it pains me to admit, we’re closer to equals than we think. Double black, right? Not black and grey,” Dazai said, trying to sound sincere, even though it pained him to be so vulnerable and honest.

A burning question hit Chuuya.

“Do you ever wish I was gone?”

“I wish I was gone,” Dazai responded.

“No but do you-“

“Are you making things about yourself again, Chuuya?” Dazai teased.

“I’m being serious. Do you ever wish I was gone?”

Dazai didn’t take a second to think.

“What a stupid question.”

Chuuya let out a huff and took a step back. He knew that he could test this. That he could end their feuding once and for all. He knew there was one way to corner Dazai into finally revealing the one truth he so desperately wanted to know. Dazai was upfront with his intentions in the moments, which was part of what earned Chuuya’s trust. But long term, Chuuya was left in the dark and grasping at straws.

Dazai thought that everything was painfully obvious, for even though he found it funny that Chuuya “only thought of himself” he was actually the one who failed to see himself play a role in anyone else’s life. This was not out of some egotistical narcissism, but rather from a place of self-doubt and failure to recognize himself as indeed a full human being.

And so, without caring about the worst possible outcome, without caring about the possibility of meeting his demise, Chuuya removed his gloves and tossed them to the side. He tried to focus on the feeling of certainty that Dazai would save him that carried him through before.

“It’s time we settle this,” Chuuya said.

Dazai rolled his eyes and laughed.

“Are we really going to try fighting again? When has this ever gotten us anywhere?”

Chuuya lifted his chin and stared intently at Dazai. It sent a chill through Dazai as he finally understood what Chuuya was doing.

“We aren’t fighting anyone. You saving me doesn’t affect your chances of winning here. There’s no immediate tactical, rational reasoning for you to save me.”

“Chuuya this doesn’t make sense, you’re being childish.” Dazai said, trying to convince himself of what he was saying. “You’re assigning some grand meaning to such a simple thing. You can go off, and then I’ll stop you. You’re not testing anything“

“You’ve got the chance to get rid of a powerful enemy here. This could make your life a whole lot easier. I don’t care what happens to me. Do you?”

Dazai couldn’t tell whether or not Chuuya was bluffing.

“You idiot, what-“

“I just wanna see what’ll happen.”

“How does this-“

“It’s all I can think of.”

“What do you-“

“For FUCK sake Dazai! You asked me what happens if you don’t save me. And I said that would never happen. So let’s test that! You're honest about other people, but let’s see you be honest about yourself. About how you feel about me.”

“I’m not entertaining-“ Dazai began as he walked over to touch Chuuya before he could go off.

“You do this, and I’ll talk. I’ll tell you everything I’m thinking. Everything I mean. But you’ll have to do the same. I’m sick of playing these mind games.”

“You’re such a fool,” Dazai said, almost reaching Chuuya.

“Are you even capable of caring about someone else? You call me self-centered, but you haven’t cared about anyone in years. You make it pretty obvious that everyone is a means to your end. Was that how it was with Oda?”

Dazai stopped dead in his tracks. Chuuya didn’t know much about Dazai’s relation to Odasaku, but he knew better than to bring it up. Except for now.

“Chuuya, you mother-“

Before Dazai could finish, the glowing red began to spread over Chuuya’s body. And before Dazai knew it, Chuuya was tearing the world apart.

“Have you ever stopped to think that maybe I’ll just stop you to save myself?” Dazai shouted.

But Dazai knew that Chuuya wouldn’t attack him. He couldn’t explain how he knew or why it was so. Even though corruption caused Chuuya to relinquish control, somehow Dazai knew he would always be safe.

Chuuya quickly got to work at his destruction. It started with the ground shaking. The trees around them were uprooted. Pieces of land were ripped from the earth.

“I had just wanted to be alone!” Dazai shouted again. He knew it was pointless to try to talk Chuuya down from this. There was only one way to get him to come back.

Dazai hated that he was in this position. Hated that his choices were to let Chuuya die or to explain why he didn’t. He could either have a conversation he was afraid of, or let his hidden emotions die with Chuuya.

What gave Chuuya the right to make this ultimatum. Why was there so much tension? Why couldn’t everything just go away and back to normal?

Chuuya continued tearing apart the earth and was now working on ripping out the surrounding (luckily abandoned) buildings.

Dazai felt his head spin. He wished that he could just kept the different pieces of himself separate and tucked away. He wished that he didn’t have to watch the worlds collide.

He wished that this all wasn’t the same life.

He knew that he could save Chuuya and attempt to explain it off as a tactical decision. It was best to not anger the Port Mafia. That’s why he did what he did.

But Chuuya wouldn’t see it that way, and he knew it.

To Chuuya, this small gesture right here and now would mean everything.

And maybe to Dazai too…

What was Dazai so afraid of?

All of a sudden, Dazai had flashes of thoughts about Odasaku. Someone who was so dear to him. Someone who was gone…

And he understood. He knew why he kept even the other half of double black at arm’s length.

Because to care for anyone was to set yourself up for hurt.

Chuuya had said he would tell Dazai everything if he saved him. What could everything be?

A lump formed in Dazai’s throat as a small voice in the back of his head whispered that he already knew.

Dazai looked out and found Chuuya. And suddenly, Chuuya was moving towards Dazai, fast.

Dazai didn’t panic. He was surprised, of course, to see Chuuya coming after him in this form, something that he had just moments ago would have sworn would never happen.

Dazai took a breath and tried to prepare himself for what he knew he would have done regardless.

Chuuya pulled in all the energy and lunged right at Dazai. As soon as he was within reach, Dazai grasped him with both hands and pulled him tightly into his chest.

They fell to the ground. Dazai looked at Chuuya in his arms and laughed.

“Well this certainly seems familiar.”

Chuuya tried to lift his head but found it too difficult. He let himself sink deeper into Dazai.

“Did I-“

“Attack me? Well it certainly seemed like that was going to be the case.”

Chuuya closed his eyes tight and swore under his breath.

“So you did it to save yourself. So that you could live to one day die with a beautiful woman. I’m so stupid for thinking that would-“

It all happened so quickly. One moment, Chuuya was scolding himself. The next, Dazai’s hand was grasped onto Chuuya’s chin, yanking his face up to meet his own.

Usually, corruption took everything out of Chuuya. But in this moment, he felt more awake, more alive, than ever.

The air around them sparked more intensely than it ever had. And right then and there, they finally knew what it was.

“I saved you because I wanted to. I could lie and pretend it was just to save myself, but I already knew what I was going to do before then.”

Dazai’s hand was still holding onto Chuuya’s face.

“And I’d do it again. And even if that day you hadn’t agreed to join the Port Mafia…I don’t think I would have let you die. At least, the part of me I live in now wouldn’t.”

Dazai stared into Chuuya’s eyes, their faces just inches apart.

“Who’s the Prince Charming now?” Chuuya laughed.

They both sat in silence. There was still so much unresolved anger and frustration between them. A laundry list of problems and disputes to work through, and two million reasons why they should just give up on one another.

But not a single reason mattered as Chuuya lay on Dazai.

Chuuya cleared his throat.

“So what do we-“

And pulling Chuuya’s face up the rest of the way, Dazai kissed him. He held him tight in his arms. And Chuuya kissed back, not caring about anything in the world, not even that his precious hat had fallen to the ground.

Chuuya pulled away after a moment and looked up at Dazai. And he laughed.

“I don’t know if this is what I had in mind when-“

“Are you sure?” Dazai asked, with a wink (again).

“I mean I don’t think ‘ hey let me almost kill myself just to see if my enemy will jam his tongue down my throat ever crossed my mind’.”

Dazai gave Chuuya a puzzled look.

“Jam his tongue down….well if that’s what we’re doing“

Dazai grabbed Chuuya by his shirt collar and kissed him hard.

Chuuya pushed back, kissing Dazai even harder and running his hand through his hair. Chuuya gave a rough pull, but instead of falling back, Dazai pushed him to the ground and pinned his wrists.

“Are you going to get upset that I’ve bested you?” Dazai said.

“If this is what losing to you really is, I’m happy to do it.”

Chuuya reached his hands and hung off of Dazai as he kissed him.

And they kept kissing and pushing and pulling at each other until they were both exhausted and breathless.

They sat up after, facing each other. Chuuya adjusted his shirt.

“So that-“ Dazai began.

“That was something.”

Dazai looked down in his lap.

“Should we just pretend-“

“This never happened?” Chuuya’s voice sounded almost afraid.

Dazai smiled. “I don’t think that’s really possible.”

“How do you figure?”

“Well for starters, look around us.”

Dazai gestured around at all the torn land, buildings and trees.

“I don’t think we can make this all disappear.”

An uncomfortable silence ran through them as they thought about how they were going to explain all this destruction.

Dazai reached forward and started to run his fingers through Chuuya’s hair.

“It’s longer.”

“And?”

“It’s….nice,” Dazai said.

“Are you ok?”

“I’m not used to this whole being open thing.”

Chuuya let out a laugh.

“You don’t have to make up compliments to appease me.”

“I’m not making it up,” Dazai said, still stroking his hair. “It’s very nice. There are….quite a few nice things about you.”

Chuuya took off the hat he had recovered.

“Like this?”

Dazai leaned forward into Chuuya’s shoulder and laughed.

“Whatever makes you happy,” he said softly.

He reached in his pocket and took out the bolo tie again.

Chuuya opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted.

“I won’t make you take it. And I won’t ask you to trade in something else for it either. And it’s not because I want to own you or because I think you’re just some stray dog. Well I mean, you kind of are, but so am I.”

He paused and contemplated on whether or not to keep going.

Chuuya reached out to gently rest his hand on Dazai’s leg.

“So was Odasaku. We used to say that. To the stray dogs…”

Chuuya looked at Dazai and knew he was sharing painful memories.

“Go ahead,” Chuuya said. He wasn’t talking about speaking more.

Dazai nodded, letting him know that he understood. He moved forward and reached around Chuuya to put the bolo tie around him. He fastened it and looked at him tenderly.

Chuuya gave a gentle smile.

“Thanks.”

Dazai looped his fingers in the tie and gently pulled Chuuya forward to kiss him again.

When they broke off, Chuuya snorted.

“So that ’s what that’s for, huh?”

“The truth finally comes out,” Dazai said playfully.

Chuuya laughed.

“I guess so”

The others would probably go looking for them soon. And they’d see the destruction and wonder what had happened. And maybe Dazai and Chuuya would make up a lie about a fight. Or training. Or maybe they’d surprise everyone, including themselves, and share the truth.

But that didn’t matter. In those precious moments, nothing did.

The tie glimmered around Chuuya’s neck as they sat in that open field of destruction. The sun began to set and melt away the day. And Dazai held Chuuya close as he had wanted to for a long time, a fact that he  had just come to fully accept. After a while, Chuuya started laughing. And laughing. Until he was in absolute hysterics.

Dazai began to laugh as he held Chuuya tight.

“What is it?” Dazai asked.

Chuuya tilted his face up to look at him. The golden hour of the sun setting looked beautiful on his face.

Chuuya gave Dazai a smirk.

“I’m so glad I punched you in the face.”

Dazai gave him a smirk right back. And then he kissed Chuuya gently on his forehead.

“You won’t get away so easy next time.”

Chuuya pulled Dazai’s hand to his lips.

“That’s fine. I don’t plan on leaving you anytime soon, you asshole.”
