The days for Lan Wangji have turned into a series of well-planned routines that brought calm and a sense of security into his life. It was waking up when the sky was still dark and the only sound was the birds that received a new day, the few minutes in bed before getting up to shower and dress in the clothes that had been prepared the day before, eating breakfast without any haste until it was time to go to class - which kept him from thinking about his mother and the what ifs - what would have happened if he had acted differently and if that had changed something.
In this way he kept his days busy and the cycle repeated itself. Most of the time he preferred to be alone avoiding all the fuss of the outside world.
But it was days like his birthday, when it was impossible for him to wish someone would look at him and be encouraged to talk to him.
...
Wei Ying was a mystery that Lan Wangji could not understand.
How someone could be totally unbearable and ridiculously adorable at the same time was hard to understand.
Lan Wangji's first impression of the gray-eyed boy was that they could never be friends, they were truly opposites. If Lan Wangji loved silence, you could listen Wei Ying's voice echoed throughout the hall, if people seemed to seek to get away from him, there were always a large number of people gathered where Wei Ying was, while Lan Wangji found it difficult to converse with others, Wei Ying's words flowed naturally. In a few words Lan Wangji was in charge of his class when the teacher was not there and Wei Ying was the cause of the disorder he had to control.
Wei Ying seemed to bring chaos wherever he went with his mere presence, had a joking demeanor, and didn't seem to take anything seriously. But he was kind, but he was kind and always protected the weakest. Also being objective, he was really cute with his huge gray eyes and his smile that seems to compete with the sun.
...
The school festival had started that week and everyone had shot out as soon as classes were over, eager not to miss a single minute of the show that was planned for later.
When Lan Wangji finished ordering his notebooks in his suitcase, there was not a single soul, he took his things and with the patience that always characterized him, he walked down the corridor on the second floor when he heard a noise in one of the chemistry laboratories. He approached slowly and he heard the sound again. Lan Wangji felt that it was his responsibility to notify security, but there was no one around so apparently he would have to be the one to stop this security threat, probably, he thought it would only be a student who forgot something in class or a cleaner that was late with his duties.
The sound was coming from one of the chemistry labs he had never been to, with his breath held he turned the door handle and took a few steps forward when a hand covered his eyes from behind and a recognizable laugh invaded his ears.
"Lan Zhan, you almost scared me to death, I thought some teacher or Jiang Cheng had discovered me," Wei Ying said holding back a laugh.
Lan Wangji stepped back willing to give him his best look of disapproval when his eyes fell on the bunny that Wei Ying carried in his overalls pocket.
Wei Ying noticed his inquisitive eyes and without needing to ask he replied in whispers, 'I'm on a mission, I'm feeding these little white furballs, I found them last week in front of the school, but the people I live with doesn't like animals. And the only safe place I could think of where no one would notice their presence and I could feed them every day was the abandoned chemistry lab.'
The chemistry lab that hadn't been used since the beginning of the semester because the course teacher was on maternity leave.
‘Wei Ying, the air in the laboratory is very cold, the rabbits of the breed you carry are more vulnerable to cold and climate changes. Ideally, they should live in an environment with average temperatures between 18 ºC and 20 ºC so as not to develop respiratory problems, you cannot continue to have it here.' That was the most he had spoken to any other student and Wei Ying's surprised look proved it.
‘You know a lot about rabbits, Lan Zhan’, Wei Ying said, still unable to hide his surprised expression at the fact that Lan Wangji is speaking to him ‘As expected of the smartest student in the whole school’.
Feeling her ears turn red, he decided to avoid replying to Wei Ying's earlier comment, ‘The school entrance gates will be closed at any moment, we must leave.’
‘You're right but I still don't have a place to leave these little ones.’
‘I have space in my house, we can decide what to do there’, Lan Zhan said.
Wei Ying seemed extremely happy with that and followed Lan Wangji with little jumps, ‘Lan zhan, today is your birthday, right? Of course I would not forget a date as important as today, what do you want? Tell me and I'll get everything you want as a thank you for not giving me away, obviously nothing too expensive, I have spent all my money on buying food for these little friends, if you wish we can go see the fireworks tonight.'
It was impossible not to get lost in those gray eyes and that smile that seemed to illuminate everything around him, especially when they were directed towards him. He must have been silent for a long time because Wei Ying kept talking visibly more nervous.
‘Lan Zhan, I know you’re a very busy student, but giving you a break won’t hurt you, I’m sure we’ll have fun and -’
"Wei Ying" interrupted Lan Zhan, "Let's go see the fireworks together."
Maybe today Lan Wangji could enjoy someone else's company.
