Work Text:
“GUYS!” Ashido shrieked, slamming the door behind her as she sprinted into the dorm’s common area.
“Mina! Are you okay?!” Kirishima jumped off the couch, hurrying over to his friend. Izuku tilted his head, looking up from his English homework.
Ashido hunched over to catch her breath, at least ten of their classmates running over to surround her as they waited for her to explain what had happened. Iida hand-chopped the air like he always did when someone disregarded the rules. “Ashido! Running in the dorms is unbecoming of a hero!”
“I have a reason!” she yelled back, twice as loud as the class president. Izuku stifled a flinch and set his homework down on the coffee table. He stood, not exactly going over to the crowd, but not remaining in place, either.
“Are there villains again?” Mineta lisped, voice frantic. A couple other students seemed to share the question, a collective hush falling over them.
“No, nothing like that,” she waved her hands, seeming to steel herself before she blurted out: “I saw Present Mic and Mr. Aizawa kissing in the hallway after class!”
Shouts erupted around them, ranging anywhere from “WHAT?!” to “holy shit,” to “I knew it!” Izuku looked around, just as baffled as the rest of them. He knew that Present Mic and Mr. Aizawa were close, sure, but he figured that was because they were in the same class when they went to UA! He never considered- were they dating? How long had that been going on? Was it a one-time thing, or were they actually a couple? Did Ashido see correctly? Was she just making something up? Why would Mr. Aizawa and Present Mic hide a relationship in the first place? If anything, he thought that Mr. Aizawa would have been dating Ms. Joke.
“Wait, did you actually see them kissing?” Kaminari asked.
“Yes! Like, full on, lip-to-lip!”
More shouts burst out. Izuku’s muttering quickened. Beside him, on the couch, Todoroki seemed to be having an epiphany of sorts. Maybe he was putting together another love child theory. Izuku wouldn’t put it past him.
“That’s so weird! Why would Present Mic and Mr. Aizawa be kissing each other?” Kirishima asked. Other students chimed in with the same question.
“Maybe they’re dating?” Sero suggested.
“Why would they be dating?” Jirou asked, twirling an ear jack around her finger.
“They are really close, kero,” Tsu croaked, finger on her chin in contemplation.
“No way! They barely interact!” Kaminari yelled.
Uraraka chimed in next. “Maybe it was a platonic kiss? Friends sometimes do that, right?”
“Yeah, sure,” Ashido snorted, “they’re ‘best friends.’”
“I ain’t ever seen two pretty best friends,” Todoroki spoke, voice completely void of emotion. Everyone turned to stare at him, Izuku included, “always one of ‘em gotta be gay.”
“What?” Izuku let out a “pfft!” sound, trying to stifle his laughter behind a hand.
“Was that not the correct use of the phrase?” Todoroki cocked his head. Oh man, he was oblivious, wasn’t he?
“He has a point,” Kirishima shrugged, shoulders shaking with repressed giggles.
“It’s so weird, though!” Kaminari protested, “I thought Mr. Aizawa was a loner or something.”
“So are they dating, or what?” Ojiro asked, tail swaying back and forth. Kaminari grabbed a fistful of the fur at the end of it and sifted it through his fingers.
“No way!” Kaminari nearly shrieked, “there’s no way they’re dating! Ashido probably saw wrong or something.”
“No, I definitely saw them kissing.”
“They wouldn’t be kissing if they weren’t dating,” Sero added.
The class seemed to ponder that for a moment. Iida pushed his glasses up, clearing his throat. “I don’t understand why you all are acting like this! They’ve been married for six years! It’s not odd for spouses to kiss one another!”
The class fell silent. Izuku’s brain failed to process for a moment, the realization taking a minute to set in.
Then all hell broke loose. “THEY’RE MARRIED?!” Ashido shrieked, grabbing Iida’s shoulders and shaking him as violently as she could.
“WHAT?!”
“Dude, no way! I- I thought they were just coworkers!”
“Wait wait wait- how do you know that, Iida?”
Iida sniffed, answering like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “My brother is quite close with them. He worked together on a vigilante case with Mr. Aizawa after UA, and his and Present Mic’s agencies are near each other. I attended their wedding.”
“Wait, why is it not public knowledge?” Jirou asked.
“The wedding itself was kept under the radar,” Iida shrugged.
“Oh, I remember now,” Todoroki said, “my father was invited to their wedding. He declined, of course, but I remember him burning the invitation.”
“Wow, rude,” Ashido huffed, “I would have killed to go.”
“How do you just forget something like that?” Sero questioned.
Todoroki shrugged. “My memory isn’t very good.”
“Fair enough,” Sero shrugged, “but still- Mr. Aizawa and Present Mic being married? Who would have thought, right?”
“It’s actually not too hard to picture,” Kirishima said, “I always see them walking together between classes. And remember when Endeavor fought that cremation villain? They were sitting next to each other on the couch.”
“Normal coworkers do that, though!” Kaminari protested, “and they could have just been friends, for all we knew!”
“Actually,” Izuku piped up, speaking for the first time since all hell had broken loose, “Mr. Aizawa has a wedding ring on a chain around his neck. I thought it was sentimental- like from a deceased parent or something. I never considered that he was married.”
“You saw a wedding ring and didn’t tell anyone?!” Ashido shrieked, bounding over to shake Izuku by his shoulders.
“I didn’t know!” Izuku protested, pushing her hands away.
“Doesn’t Present Mic wear a wedding ring around the dorms?” Yaoyorozu asked.
Izuku paused, thinking back on his few memories of the loud hero in casual wear, before nodding. “Huh, yeah! He does! Dang, I never even realized!”
“Aren’t you supposed to be observant or something?” Kaminari twirled a lock of fur around his finger, his other hand gliding up and down the muscle of Ojiro’s tail.
Izuku shrugged. “I analyze quirks, not marriages, Kaminari.”
At that moment, the door to the dorms opened. Mr. Aizawa strolled in, hunched over, face buried in his capture weapon. Present Mic trailed behind him, his hand firmly clasping Eri’s tiny one.
“So,” Mr. Aizawa drawled, walking up to Ashido. The girl gulped, stumbling back a few steps. “You saw us, hm?”
“Y-yeah. It was an accident, though! I was trying to find the side exit!”
“Eh, it was going to come out one way or another,” Mr. Aizawa shrugged, hand rubbing at the back of his neck.
“So it’s true then?” Kaminari asked.
Present Mic shot finger guns towards the class. Eri took the opportunity to run over to Izuku, grin pulling at her cheeks. Izuku crouched down, letting the girl fling her arms around him. “Yep!” the voice hero confirmed, “Sho and I are together!”
“Iida said you’ve been married for six years,” Jirou pointed out.
“Yep! Man, six years? It feels like forever ago.”
Izuku stood, balancing Eri on his hip, and tweaked her nose between his fingers, giggling as she scrunched her face up in response.
“I was at their wedding!” Iida protested, “do you not trust my word?!”
Jirou shrugged. “Bold of you to assume I trust people.”
“So you guys are actually married?” Mineta asked.
“Did you not listen the first time?” Mr. Aizawa huffed. Mineta flushed.
“How- how does that even work?” Kaminari sputtered, “you two are like, polar opposites!”
Izuku let out a sigh of relief- he was worried for a moment that Kaminari was homophobic. Then again, according to Kirishima, he was bisexual, so that would have been hypocritical.
“We make it work,” Present Mic grinned, slinging an arm around Mr. Aizawa, who shrunk in on himself with a huff, “I make sure Sho doesn’t forget basic hygiene, and he makes sure I don’t blow everyone’s eardrums out!”
Eri tilted her head. “What’s hygiene, Mr. Yamada?”
‘Yamada? Does she mean Present Mic?’
“Things like brushing your teeth and taking a bath, little listener!”
’Yeah, definitely Present Mic. His real name is Yamada? Is that public information? Heroes usually make their name public, though I guess Hawks and All Might never publicly revealed theirs. I can’t remember if Present Mic’s is public or not.’
“Oh,” Eri wrinkled her nose, “Mr. Aizawa brushes his teeth!”
“And forgets to do everything else.”
“Watch it,” Mr. Aizawa grumbled, “I might just steal your shampoo.”
“And do what? Drink it? You never wash your hair.”
“Maybe I would. Or I’ll just give it to Eri.”
“I have my own shampoo, Mr. Aizawa!”
“It was a joke, Eri.”
“Oh.” Eri paused. “Can you let me down now, Mr. Deku?”
“Oh, sure,” Izuku nodded, bending down so Eri could safely release her death grip on him. He watched as she scampered over to the two teachers, hands reaching out to cling onto Mr. Aizawa’s jumpsuit pants.
“What is it, Eri?” Mr. Aizawa asked, his voice tired yet filled with a certain fondness that Izuku couldn’t quite place.
“Can we have yakisoba for dinner?” she asked.
“Sure. Hizashi can cook, though.”
“Hey!”
“I’d probably burn the kitchen down,” Mr. Aizawa drawled, “besides, you’re on kitchen duty tonight.”
Present Mic huffed in indignation, but resigned himself to his fate. The class watched the interaction in weird fascination.
“Now that you know about us being married,” Mr. Aizawa turned to address the class, hand reaching down to pat Eri’s head, “you should know that we aren’t public with our relationship. You can talk about us amongst yourselves, but do not mention this to anyone outside of UA, or even outside your class.”
“Does the staff know? Yaoyorozu asked.
“Yes,” Mr. Aizawa affirmed, “but outside of them, a couple select heroes, and you guys, nobody else knows. Let this be a lesson to you all- if you decide to make your identity or personal relationships public, you’re putting your loved ones at risk. Villains won’t hesitate to hurt them if they know they’re a weakness of yours. They could be kidnapped, tortured, held for ransom, or even killed, all because you went public about your marriage or said your name in public.”
“It’s true,” Todoroki nodded, “my siblings and I have been the target of several villains. Luckily the house is inside a gate in a closed community, but that doesn’t mean we’re not in danger when we go outside.”
“Yes,” Mr. Aizawa frowned, “unfortunately, that’s a sacrifice you make when you choose to become a hero.”
“Wait, siblings? I thought you were an only child?” Kirishima questioned, tilting his head.
“No, I have- well, I had two brothers and a sister. Now it’s just my brother and sister.”
“Really? Endeavor only talks about you, though!” Kaminari pointed out.
Todoroki frowned, eyes flitting over to Izuku’s for a split second before focusing on the ground. “Their quirks weren’t strong enough for heroics.”
Mr. Aizawa looked like he wanted to say something, but he pressed his lips together instead. “No matter what Todoroki’s family is like, you should all take precautions to make sure your families are safe. For us, that means that our names and romantic lives remain out of the public eye. For you, it could simply mean that you keep a close eye on your families. Whatever option you choose, make sure it’s a safe one.”
“Yes, Mr. Aizawa,” the class replied in unison.
“Good,” Mr. Aizawa turned back to Eri. “You wanna head over to the teacher’s dorms now?”
“Okay,” Eri nodded, reaching her hands up. Mr. Aizawa bent over to pick her up and settled her on his hip, just like Izuku had done earlier.
“Behave yourselves,” Mr. Aizawa warned, “I will know if you leak this to anyone, and I won’t hesitate to expel you if you do.”
“Yes, Mr. Aizawa.”
“Good. I’m glad we’re in agreement here.”
“Catch ya later, little listeners!”
The trio left, leaving the majority of Class 1-A in a stunned silence.
“So, they’re really together, huh?” Jirou muttered.
“Our teachers are married!” Ashido cheered, pumping an enthusiastic arm up into the air.
“Revelry in the dark.”
“I thought it was a joke!”
“Damn, we have to come up with a ship name for them now!”
“I still can’t get over how Todoroki said ‘I ain’t ever seen two pretty best friends.’”
“Is Present Mic’s name actually Yamada?”
“No way, didn’t Mr. Aizawa say it was Hizashi or something?”
“Yeah, but that was probably his first name. Yamada’s probably his last name.”
“So, Yamada Hizashi, then?”
“That’s so weird! Yamada sounds like an old guy’s name!”
“Kinda, yeah. It’s a pretty common last name, though!”
“Do you think Eri’s their child or something?”
“Wasn’t she the kid from Midoriya’s work study?”
“Yeah, she only appeared after that.”
“Hm, maybe they adopted her?”
“That’s a possibility!”
Izuku sighed, sitting back down on the couch to finish his English homework.
Present Mic and Mr. Aizawa, huh?
He’d have to write that down later, once he went upstairs. It was kind of cute, if he thought about it- their gruff teacher having a soft spot for the human embodiment of a screaming cockatiel was hilarious yet strangely fitting.
He smiled, looking over at Todoroki. For once, he was right about a theory.
Todoroki caught his glance and gave a tiny smile in return.
He’d have to worry about his family someday, sure, but he was sure Todoroki could take care of himself perfectly well.
