Summary:

Trucy and Pearl watch the sunset together.

Work Text:

Pearl sat on the ledge on the chilly autumn evening, Trucy cuddled close to her side, head on her shoulder. The league was just fat enough that it didn’t feel as though the girls could tumble into the river at the slightest wiggle, but just thin enough to give a surreal feeling, as well as the bitter, sharp smell of the creekwater below them. Pearl did spider scales on her ukelele, fingers moving through the worn motion as a spider moves to spin it’s web; natural, calm, warm. She found herself chuckling as her girlfriend made a small noise of discomfort, curling against Pearl even tighter for the maximum amount of snugness. Pearl paused, having finished her spidering.

“ You should’ve brought a warmer sweater, Truce.”

“ I like your warmth better.”

Pearl blushed slightly, punctuated by a soft plucking of one of her ukulele chords by Trucy. Pearl shifted so that the small instrument was cradled in the crook of her elbow and the neck was held by her left hand, and let her eyes fall shut. She thought of the sandwiches she and Trucy had made for one another, the walk they’d taken. She played the chords for the Itsy Bitsy Spider absentmindedly, each note unevenly spaced and sometimes choppy. Neither girl minded. Then, it began. Pearl played note after note, experimenting and innovating an impromptu song. Each soft, gentle note her plucks produced rang just barely over the rushing water beneath them. In Pearl’s mind, suddenly everything became music. There was the flutter of leaves and wind skipped through the trees, a stone falling into the steam with a light plop, footsteps echoing from other parts of the park, a dog barking somewhere in the distance. Coming up with Lyrics had always left Pearl stressed; how to say the right thing, how to subvert, how to comfort? But rhythms and melodies came to her in a way only a certain couple things ever had - Trucy tried to keep up, tapping on the cement along to the music.

Pearl chose to end the song when Trucy pulled her closer and placed a kiss to her forehead.
