The Echoes of a War Cry

Summary:

An AU of the LA Movie: Her name is Athena Lipsky-Go. When Athena moves to Middleton she befriends Kim Possible. She gets on the soccer team. Easy right? Not if she's the daughter of Dr. Drakken and Shego. Nothing is ever that easy in her life.

Notes:

Her heart wears wisdom skin and wit warmed splendor, the echoes of a war cry holding its four chambers together. She rises like Athena on a night of victory dancing. She rises like the blood moon in a night sky of a thousand nebulae bursting.

-Nikita Gill, Athena Girl

Chapter Text

She is Athena.

She is not a goddess, yet she feels like a demigod. Her powers make her so, the powers that her mother had given to her through her blood. Yet she or her mother were not gods. Her mom was far from it, yet her parents had named her after a goddess—a goddess of war and wisdom, of strategy, of the battlefield.

Athena grew up in Go City. Her Uncle Henry was her guardian. Her mom handed her over to her Uncle. Her Uncle had told her that it was because her mom wanted the best for her. Athena thought her mother was selfish, leaving her to pursue villainy with her father-someone her Uncle Henry slightly did not like. Yet her Uncle Henry and her other Uncle Wesley, Uncle Mel, and Aunt Winona talked nothing but good about her mom. Yet, she cannot bring herself to love her mom or her dad. She knows them from the news; she knows them from stories. Yet, she never really knows them at all. They are nothing but ghost stories mocking her on the television.

So she grew without them. She was known as Senator Go's niece; her mom was a rumor amongst the circles and tabloids in Go City and the country. Athena ignored them all. Let them wonder; the truth would be just as shocking. At least to the public. Not to her.

Her last name is Go. Her last name is Lipsky. Lipsky-Go. They are with her in a name.

When she turns fourteen, she digs around for the whereabouts of her parents. She finds out her father had been sent to prison, but her mom was nowhere to be seen. A week later, news came in that Dr. Drakken had been broken out, and she knew her mom did it. Her aunt and uncles looked at one another, unsure of what to say or how to go about this. Athena didn't care. Some part of her did care and wanted to care about her parents, but they were so distant from her that it felt utterly impossible.

She transfers to Middleton because of her Uncle Wes. His job made him go to Middleton, and since Aunt Winona and Uncle Henry were in DC, Uncle Mel was in Go City, it fell to the youngest of the Go siblings to give their niece some semblance of stability. There was nothing in the sense of stability in her life. Training to keep her growing powers in check and getting headaches every day from hearing people's thoughts, albeit accidentally, was hard. Athena was the living embodiment of powers transferring from her mother to her. The comet gave her mom her own powers, and her mom gave Athena's powers.

The cycle continues. It always continues, and it never breaks.

Her name is Athena Diana Lipsky-Go.

Her name is Athena.

She had gone to Go City High School, less than two weeks, past word gone because of her Uncle Wesley's transfer to the Middleton FBI Team. Uncle Henry, Aunt Wendy, and Uncle Mel were not here to keep an eye on Athena and be guardians because of their respective jobs (Politicians and Lawyers, oh my!) It fell on the youngest of the Go siblings to be on Guardian duty of their niece. Athena was transferred to Middleton High at the beginning of her Freshman year, something she was not so happy about. The only good thing that came out of it was seeing her oldest friend.

Monique had moved at the end of their eighth-grade year and had gone to Middleton High. Athena and Monique had texted each other and met up around the city whenever both girls got the chance. Mostly because of Athena's hectic schedule of training with her Uncle Wes and taking her violin lessons, and being on the soccer team. Still, both girls made time up for each other. When Athena texted Monique the news of her sudden move to Middleton, her friend happily told her about the hangout spots and the mall that she worked at to hang out at.

Athena sighed and got up, no point in waiting to be late on her first day. It was weird being out of the big city she had grown up in only to land in the suburbs of all places where it was quiet.

She didn't like it. She was born and raised a city girl; she swore when she was out of school, graduated she would move back to Go City. It was her home.

"Athena, you're going to be late for school, kid!" Uncle Wesley shouted as he swore in Spanish, trying to find his laptop... again. Her Uncle was probably the only FBI agent who could lose his glasses and would be in the most obvious place imaginable. Athena got up and went to change, brush her teeth, dread going to her first day of a new school. She had already been to Go City High for two weeks when she transferred. Middleton High got in later into the school year than Go City. Yay for her.

After changing and brushing her hair, making sure she didn't look like a zombie, she grabbed her backpack and her green jacket. Walking down the steps, she could hear Uncle Wesley watching the news while making breakfast. When she got to the kitchen, her Uncle was still looking for his laptop while eating a piece of toast. Athena shook her head and went to eat something before school.

"Did you check the attic?" She grinned.

Her uncle let out a "haha" sarcastically as he went to go find his laptop. Athena giggled and went back to get the cereal to eat. After eating and her Uncle coming back into the kitchen triumphantly as he did indeed find his laptop (underneath the files of cases in his office, go figure!) He drove Athena to school. She sat there fidgeting, holding her soccer back tightly.

"Everything's going to be fine," Her Uncle told her. Yet all she could think of was her parents somewhere on the run. They've never thought about her once in the past fourteen years of her life, so why think about them? Still, she was just a kid. She was human enough to know that even if they didn't think about her, she thought about them. It was that and her powers. Ever since she could remember, her powers were a constant in her life, thanks to her mom's DNA and the comet. Her aunt and uncles all thought Athena would inherit her mom's powers, but she did not in a twist of fate. Instead, she had gotten telekinetic powers and telekinesis. Mind reading and the ability to lift things with her mind. Her Uncle Mel and Uncle Wes had gone to great lengths in helping her control her powers, even with tantrums and pouts. Athena could control her powers... sort of. She was still a teenager, a kid in the eyes of her family, and her aunt explained that even with so much control on her part, there would be days that Athena's powers would slip from her control, and it would be okay.

"You will be great, school's is going to be great and -"

"- and you'll find the Zodiac Killer, and we'll go back to Go City. Oh, maybe San Fransisco!" Athena said happily with a smile. Wesley shook his head, amused.

"Sure, kid." He said as he stopped behind the school bus and parked. "Athena, you'll be okay."

She nodded but was still unsure. "Let me know if you're going to try out for soccer so I can wait for you."

"I will," She replied to her uncle. Taking a deep breath, she got out of the car. "Bye, have fun hunting the Zodiac!"

"We aren't in San Fransisco, Athena!" Her Uncle yelled before waving goodbye and driving out of the school parking lot. Shifting her duffle bag and gripping it, she could see a crowd surrounding the entrance. Great a fight, which stupid people decide to do that. Instead, it dispersed, and Athena went to the office, not caring about what that was about.

After getting her locker number, going to her locker, and unlocking it, she put her duffle bag in. She heard a girl's voice complaining to her friend about someone named Bonnie. She shut her locker and went to find her classes. She did not want to be tardy on her first day. Thankfully she wasn't.

As the school day continued, Athena found out that she went to the same school as Kim Possible. She found it absolutely hilarious considering who her parents were and who had locked away her dad in the first place. Oh, the irony.

She found Monique sitting with Kim Possible and her sidekick, Ron, Athena thought his name was. They were all chatting lively and could slightly hear the intrusion of her powers kicking in when she felt agitated. She began to hear the voices, hear everyone's thoughts, and she had to close off before her head exploded with pain.

"Athena!" Monique said, waving her arms as she walked over and sat down in front of her oldest friend. "Kim, Ron, this is my oldest friend from Go City. Athena Lipsky-Go."

"Go?" Kim asked. "Aren't they super-rich?"

"Yep," Athena said, diving into the history. "The Go family founded Go City so that you could say my family and me, my mom and her siblings are Legacy Kids of the city and the line."

"Ah," Kim said but looked at her curiously. "What about Lipsky? Do you know someone named Drew Lipsky?"

Athena shrugged. "Not really. Lipsky could be a prevalent last name, and I can't say that I have." Yet she knew, and so did Monique. Monique was the only outsider of the family that knew about Athena's parents and her powers. She knew who Team Go was, and that was all because Monique could be trusted.

"Isn't it polish? or somewhere from Europe, KP?" Ron butted in. Athena almost replied that it was of German origin but kept her mouth shut. She would not expose herself to her parents' enemies that she was told Dr. Drakken and Shego's biological daughter because that would get her into answering questions she did not want to answer. The biggest one being, Do you know where they are?

She didn't know. She would probably never know, and that was alright with her. They left her, and she didn't need them.

"Athena, you trying out for soccer? Alexa is going to be so pissed that you'll be playing for the enemy," Monique cut in Athena's internal war as she teased her about her old soccer captain. She rolled her eyes. "She's going to pull a Kylo Ren. At least you'll see Julia again!"

She snorted. "If anything, I hope this team is good enough to go to the finals. If I were on the Go High team this year would be in the bag! Sorry." She apologized to Kim and Ron for shitting on the school team, but it was true. Go City High was undefeated, and Athena sorely wished she hadn't been transferred to Middleton. She'll have to make the best of it. "Hopefully, trying out for Forward won't be too bad. You trying out for anything?" She asked the others at the table as she ate her food.

"I'll be going into cheerleading," Kim said. "I'll be captain in a few years without Bonnie's interference, so that will be a great change. Good luck with tryouts. Bonnie is pretty high strung to make any new freshman miserable; trust me, she did that when I tried out for cheer back in middle school."

Athena thanked her for the advice. Yet Kim had more questions. "How do you know Julia Kinney?"

"She was my old teammate when I played soccer in the Go City League when I was in middle school. Best Midfielder ever! What position does Bonnie play?"

"Midfielder," Kim answered. Athena nodded. She would have no problem getting the forward position since Julia was on the team. Still, she would have to give it everything during tryouts.

"What position are you trying out for the cheer team, Kim?" Athena asked the redhead.

"Flyer," Kim said proudly. "I know Tara, who's sort of Bonnie's friend. So she'll be cool to be around with as well as some of the other girls. The captain of the cheer team saw my stunts last year and made sure to tell me that if I was on her team when I came here, we could go to finals!" She was brimming with excitement and a glimmer of competitiveness that Athena saw in herself. "I can't wait to rub it in Bonnie's face. Ha!"

The group chatted about other stuff, how Mr. Barkin could take over multiple classes. How Athena was liking Middleton and if she ever dined in the first-ever established Bueno Nacho back in Go City (Ron begged Athena to take him with her when he found out that one of her Uncle's had an in with the manager there. Athena promised Ron she would speak to her Uncle about pulling some strings.) Athena felt the most normal she's ever felt all day.

She did not know that people were spying on them.

Drakken looked at Possible and her sidekick laughing. He had thought that her day would be ruined, considering it had started pretty bad. Yet there she was, laughing with her friends.

He zoomed in closer as Shego looked on bored. The girl sitting next to Kim had brown hair with pink highlights hidden and a smile that seemed to encourage nothing but trouble. Shego looked up and had to do a double-take.

No... no, that can't be her. She's in Go City with her dumb brothers. Wendy would have told her if- But Wendy wouldn't because her little sister was still mad at her for leaving the Team, leaving the family. Wesley would be the only one to tell her, but he hadn't even said anything to her. None of them would tell her anything, and it wasn't as if she had tried to keep in contact with her siblings after giving her kid to them to raise.

She named her Athena. She had told Drakken about their kid, and they both promised to collect her after taking over the world. Yet here was Athena laughing alongside Kim Possible as if they'd been best friends before. No, it couldn't be her.

She got into the school system, her nerves already betraying her. Drakken already knew what his partner was doing; he looked on silent, wondering if his daughter was there by some twist of fate.

Low and behold, it was her. It was there on the computer screen plain as the look on Shego and Drakken's faces.

Athena D. Lipsky-Go, right there.

"Athena Diana Lipsky-Go," Shego croaked. She was shaking and had to curl her fists to try and stop herself. "She's actually here. Why is she here?"

"Your brothers must have moved here for something. One of them, at least?" Drakken said, trying to figure out the same thing as Shego. He ran his fingers in his hair, making them stand up even more. "Why move her here if not because of their work."

"Wesley," Shego said suddenly. "Mel, Wendy, and Henry all work out of state or in Go City so that it couldn't be them. It has to be Wesley." She groaned.

"Well, at least we know she's taken care of," Drakken said softly. Shego had to agree with the mad scientist.

She knew her siblings would provide the best for her daughter. They were the only ones she trusted to take care of Athena, and now she was here! She was here. They could find her, and then what? Get to know her and convince her to join their side. It didn't sound too bad.

Not bad at all.

The first thing, though, Shego needed to contact her little brother.

"Athena!" Julia Kinney, captain of the girl's soccer team, yelled her name with glee. Her light brown hair was tied up in a ponytail, and she had her signature pink headband that Athena was familiar with. She was taller than Athena, but Athena was always on the short side, so she was used to looking up. Bonnie looked at Athena with suspicion. She ignored the look and hugged her friend tightly. Pulling back, Jula took a good look at Athena. "Trying out? Of course, you are, oh, this is great! The old duo is back."

Julia and Athena were known as the duo on their old team for being vicious on the field as forwards. It didn't help that their old team was known as the girls who injured at least one of the rival team's players. They were undefeated for three seasons, so it didn't matter to them. They wanted to win.

"Go stand with the other girls; you'll make it in," Julia winked at Athena before jogging back to the other girls. She walked over to where two other girls were and introduced herself.

Illiana Vera was trying out for midfielder, while Lauren Wong-Bennet was trying out for goalie. Knowing their chances, they would get in since soccer needed more players to switch out, and it seemed there was only one goalie and already the forward and midfielder positions sort of filling. The coach, Ms. Green, a woman with black short hair and a look that screamed, "Don't Fuck With Me." I told them the drills and began the tryouts.

By the end, since there were only three girls, they were in the team. Illiana, Lauren, and Athena all cheered even if they were sore from the scrimmage coach had them do. Julia clapped Athena on the back with a grin on her face.

"Told you," She said.

"Never doubted you, Jewels," She said, calling her friend in her nickname. "We'll kick ass this season for sure."

Julia nodded, eyes determined to hold the trophy. "Oh, we will. Trust me."

They walked off the field to the gym as Julia launched into what the team will be doing tomorrow; she saw Kim's cheer tryouts. It seemed to be going well as much as Athena could see inside the gym as a girl gave others orders. The cheer team launched into a rhyming cheer.

"Go, go bulldogs! Go, go, go bulldogs!"

The cheer sounded good, and Athena hoped Kim got on the team.

Her uncle was waiting for her in the staff parking lot as Julia waved goodbye and headed to her own car in the student parking lot. Athena made her way to the car and got in.

"How were tryouts?" Wes asked her with a smile on his face as he drove them out of the parking lot. He lowered the volume on the radio.

"I got in! You are looking at Middleton's newest forward!"

Wes cheered as he turned the street. "I told you! See? Everything is turning out alright."

"What about you? How was your day?" Athena fiddled with the screen in the car until she got to Bluetooth and picked her phone. She began to play Everyone Wants To Rule The World. "Did you find the Zodiac?"

Wes rolled his eyes at his niece. "No, I didn't find the Zodiac. Again, he was killed in San Francisco, which is three hours away from here. I doubt he would kill here."

Athena shrugged. "You never know! It could happen."

"Yeah, well, when it does, you'll be the first I call Detective Lipsky," Wesley said sarcastically. Athena grinned.

"Any news on... them?" She tentatively asked her uncle. He didn't need any clarification from her to ask who she was referring to.

Wesley sighed and shook his head. "Nope. Nothing. It seems your mom hides efficiently well; it may take a while before I can find them. Maybe we'll never hear from them."

Doubtful, Athena thought darkly. They'll pop back up in no time; I give them a month at most. They can't hide forever. Something's going to draw them out.

Chapter 2: The Powers

Chapter Text

"Mankind has always feared what it doesn't understand,"

-X-Men, 2000

Athena could feel her legs burn as she ran. On the fourth day of training on the team and Julia was getting them ready. She could hear Bonnie complain to her friend but Athena huffed and ran farther away. She didn't blame Julia for being this rough on the team. Middleton High was good at football and cheer but the girls' soccer team was always defeated by the other teams especially Go City's soccer team. So Julia being competitive and drilling them was not that surprising to Athena. She didn't blame her friend. She wants to win too. She wants to show the school that the football team wasn't the only athletic team in Middleton that could win.

She could hear the cheer team chant loudly and doing their stunts. Both teams were practicing outside so Athena caught glimpses of Kim flying high and jumping around as she ran the tracks.

After the run, it was time for training. Goalies would train with forwards while Midfielders were going to train with defense. Then they would switch. Athena gritted her teeth as she began to kick the ball to Farah Morgan. Bonnie was still talking loudly and Athena internally groaned.

"C'mon girls!" Julia ran past them yelling. "Let's go! Keep it up!"

Today was going to be a long day.

Soccer training was seemingly easier but when her other training came in, she hated it. Athena knew it was essential to making sure her powers were in her control but it was tiresome. Both physically and mentally.

She could hear Uncle Wes play music as she continued with her training. She was wired up, the patches on her forehead and temples. Her training consisted of her mind and physical training. Today was the mind. Her powers were still growing she could lift things ten times the weight of the object like a bus. Still there were time she had trouble managing to keep a chunk of debris from a building afloat but her Uncles would tell her that with practice she could. It was also training to stay afloat which was fun and she joked that she was Jean Grey much to the amusement of her Uncle Wes and Aunt Winona.

When training was over and laying down for an hour, Athena got to work on her room. She had things floating and zipping past her to place stuff down. Her bookcase was reorganized and boxes squashed down as her stuff was finally placed. She liked things organized, not messy.

It helped her.

Placing the final touches which were posters up, she was satisfied with the look of her new room. The posters of a framed Disneyland map from when the park first opened to a poster of Janis Joplin and a poster of TLC's CrazySexyCool album cover. Two banners that hung across from one another were of House Stark and House Lannister. Maybe two more posters could do, maybe one of Janet Jackson or Taylor Swift? Or a House Targaryen banner and a House Greyjoy banner too!

Kim, Monique, and Ron all sat around their booth in Bueno Nacho. Athena had missed out, gone to visit her Uncle Miles in Middleton. Ron was typing away from his laptop while eating the burrito, updating his blog about the villains.

"Monique? I was wondering about Athena."

Monique paused, looking up from her history homework at her friend. "What about her?"

Kim shrugged. "I don't know. I was wondering if Athena is okay? She looked in pain during class today. She talks to you more than us, with your history and all that."

"She has stuff going on Kim. She wanted to tell you guys but it would be better for you guys to know..." She trailed off shifting in her seat. "Athena was born with powers."

"Like superhero powers? Cool!" Ron said typing away but Monique closed the laptop to get his attention.

"You guys can't tell anyone. Not even your blog, got it?" She did not know that Ron had already sent the post that it would be seen by all especially the villains. Monique was serious, the most Kim or Ron had ever seen her. "She has Telekineses and Telepathy, those are her powers."

"Who gave them to her?" Kim asked.

"Her mom," Monique had to choose her next words carefully knowing full well the identity of Athena's mom and dad. "She has powers and well when Athena was born, she got her power. Different powers but still she got powers from her mom. She told me that she got a few of her mom's powers but mostly it's telepathy and telekinesis. That's why her head was hurting, her telepathy is still in training. I mean she is still in training."

Her response was vague but it answered Kim's question. "So her mom. Was she like a superhero too?"

Shit. "They aren't in the picture. Just her Uncles and Aunt. It's, ah, a touchy subject for her about her parents."

At that answer, Kim frowned. Monique wondered what she was thinking if it was good or bad. "She's at home. Let's bring her some Nachos. We can do homework there."

Monique didn't hate that idea. "Okay, let's go. I know the way to her house."

"Wait I still need to order!" Ron shouted as he bolted from his seat to go order his friend's food.

Shego had finally managed to track down her brother's new address in Middleton City by breaking into the FBI website to find out her little brother's information but she did not need to get that far when Drakken also announced that he found out more stuff about their daughter. It was Kim's sidekick blog and they wondered if their daughter allowed it.

Reading it aloud Shego realized that her daughter had inherited powers. Telekinesis and telepathy. How powerful was she?

"Change first. Then let's go find our kid." Shego told the mad scientist. She wondered about her siblings and her daughter. Mostly her daughter. What was she like? If she had powers how was she dealing with them? She remembered the days of using her powers and training with them. God those days were terrible.

Taking a deep breath, Shego walked away to go get changed and fix her makeup.

Athena looked at her hand. It was aflame bright green flame flickered in her hand. With her own individual powers came the power she had inherited from her mom. Shego's signature green plasma flame was now in Athena. She did not know whether to laugh or cry about it. She was fine with this power but not this. She had shown her Uncle Wes who had called a family meeting on FaceTime with his siblings. They all looked at Athena with wide eyes.

Some tiny part of her wondered what her mom would have thought about Athena's powers? Would she have taught her daughter how to control them? Would she be proud that Athena got her powers as well?

I don't need her. She didn't need me then so why do I care?

Shaking her thoughts away she continued to read Clash of Kings. Game of Thrones had become a passion of hers as well as other things like being both a Marvel and DC fan. She partially blamed her Uncle Henry and Uncle Wes for her obsession with the comics growing up and later the movies. Well some of the movies, she did not speak about the Green Lantern movie. Never ever.

The flame flickered only to die out.

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

"Athena can you get the door! I'm still on the job," On the "job" meant that her Uncle Wes was looking over the patterns of a killer or making the profile. "If it's Girls Scouts, my wallet is on the counter!"

Athena hoped it was the girl's scouts she thought as she walked down the stairs. She really wanted cookies.

Opening the door, she wished it was those damn Girl Scouts. In front of her were her parents. Athena's first thought was, Isn't he supposed to be blue? Looking at her dad who did not look blue and panic slowly began to fill her. It got worse when she heard someone call out, "Isn't that Drakken and Shego?" It sounded like Ron. "It is them KP!"

Yep, it's Ron.

The only thing Athena did was slam the front door of her house and lock it.

"Athena? What happened? Did the Girls Scouts try to indoctrinate you?" Her Uncle joked but Athena could only run past him to the safety of her room. Behind her, Monique could be heard knocking at the door, hollering outside to let them in.

"What are they doing here? How did they find me?" She whispered to herself as she entered her room and locked it behind her. Something was glowing green. Wearily she pulled her hands up to see green flames enveloping her hands. She began to cry trying to control her newfound powers while outside, Wes dealt with seeing his sister. Inside her room, Athena could only cry as the green flames on her hands burned bright.

Why me?, she thought to herself, why?
