For them

Summary:

“How is this my fault?”

“How is this not your fault? If you had been more careful we wouldn’t be in this situation!”

Or, Jeongguk and Taehyung argue when their daughter's life is put in danger.

Work Text:

“How is this my fault?”

“How is this not your fault? If you had been more careful we wouldn’t be in this situation!”

Jeongguk glared. “Well it’s not my fault that our child, who was literally raised by fugitives mind you, just happened to pick up a few stealth skills- which are beyond amazing baby you did great.”

Yumi looks up from where she was pouting at her hands and smiles brightly. If Taehyung wasn’t still fuming in front of him, Jeongguk would’ve melted completely and crushed her in a huge hug. Instead he turns back to his husband and folds his arms over his chest.

“Look Tae, I already wiped the security cameras on the way out, and there’s no one alive to know anything about her so there was no harm done. She just wanted to see her papa work, is that so bad?”

Jeongguk had gone out on a mission just a few hours ago. He and Taehyung were considered assassins in a way, or maybe hitmen. They didn’t pay too much attention to labels. Jeongguk had gotten an anonymous tip about a stupidly corrupt government official who’d be sleeping with a lack of guards tonight, and he refused to let the chance slip away.

The moment he got home after picking Yumi up from daycare, he’d gotten all of his tools, kissed Taehyung goodbye, and headed back out the door in a span of minutes. He had no clue their child had snuck in the car behind him, hitchhiking a ride to a ridiculously large mansion several miles away.

When he armed himself with his usual knives and guns and got out the car, he was completely clueless to the child silently following behind him.

And he never noticed her until he was five floors deep in the mansion and holding a knife up to the neck of the sleeping man. He’d been ready to just decapitate the little shit and end his disgusting life, but then a small high-pitched sound had him whipping around and pointing a gun at his daughter.

To say he almost had a heart attack would be an understatement. Jeongguk wanted to yell at her, demand why she was here and how she got here. And then his phone started buzzing in his pocket and Taehyung was screaming in his ear about how he couldn’t find Yumi.

Unfortunately, the phone’s buzzing woke up the official.

The large man let out a scream and the room was quickly flooded with a handful of guards. Jeongguk could only curse and pull Yumi behind him before moving fluidly around the room, ending each of their lives before they could even call for back-up.

By the time he finished the room was slathered in blood and Yumi just stood by the window in awe. She squealed quietly and told her papa how cool he was, and Jeongguk was slightly concerned about how unbothered she seemed by the blatant massacre she just witnessed.

After that Jeongguk managed to snatch her up and throw her over his shoulder, racing to the mansion’s security room where he quickly erased any and all footage from the past hour, and then left the building without a trace.

“ Yes! She’s just a child-!”

Taehyung cuts himself off when he hears the small but sharp intake of breath coming from across the room. The little girl sitting on the living room couch had silently brought her knees up to her chest and buried her head in her arms, probably to escape the shouting. Feeling his heart ache a little, Tae sighs and walks over to her.

He could see out of the corner of his eye Jeongguk watching as he sat down next to their daughter, turned so that he’s facing her. “Yumi” he sings. “Mimi~”

He smiled when that got her to lift up her head. Her eyes were rimmed with a light pink but thankfully there were no tears. He didn’t have to look at the clock above them to tell that it was time for bed.

With an exaggerated grunt, Taehyung slid his hands under her arms and picked her up so that she sat in his lap. Jeongguk quickly took her place on the couch.

“Now Yumi,” Taehyung started. His voice was stern but still held the softness that it always would when having anything to do with her. The said girl just peaked up at him through her lashes. “We aren’t mad at you by any means. But what you did could have gotten you or your papa really hurt. Not only did you. . .”

A few more minutes of light-hearted scolding and the little girl was just too tired to try responding anymore. Her head full of silky black hair rested on her dad’s shoulder. By the time Taehyung even realized she wasn’t listening anymore, she was already asleep, face buried in his neck.

Jeongguk chuckles lightly as his exasperated look. The house was so quiet now. They could only hear the clock ticking above their heads. Jungkook couldn’t help the warmth that bloomed in his chest when he noticed the way Taehyung cradled Yumi to his chest, running a hand through her hair. He knew exactly what he was thinking and he couldn’t be more regretful. He knew Taehyung was only yelling at him earlier because he was concerned for their daughter’s safety, yet he just kept arguing.

Jeongguk gazed warmly at their daughter, chubby cheeks squished against her father’s chest and tiny, round hands latched subconsciously onto his shirt. They may not have given birth to her but they might as well have with the way she resembled them regardless.

The couple had found Yumi six years ago on their honeymoon in China. They’d been roaming through the streets of one of the bigger cities when they noticed a little 2-month old baby girl crying her heart out near a large pile of trash by an alleyway. It was almost too cliché but not any less heartbreaking.

There was a silent agreement between them when Jeongguk quickly swept up the child who instantly stopped crying the moment she was in his arms. She cooed up at him before her eyes shifted to Taehyung, and then she made the most adorable effort to reach out to him while still snuggling into the chest she was pressed against.

To say the least, the two had to cut their honeymoon short but they didn’t have any less fun taking care of their new ball of sunshine than they would have visiting shrines and amusement parks.

Looking at her now, if they had no idea, neither of them would have guessed that she wasn’t biologically related to at least one of them. Little Kim Yumi had Taehyung’s adorable boxy smile and Jeongguk’s bunny nose. The shape of her face was hardly defined- just a blob of cute baby- but if they had to guess now they’d say it’d turn out to resemble Taehyung’s more.

Jeongguk looked up at his husband and their eyes met, silently communicating with each other. He watched as Taehyung carefully stood up with Yumi tucked in his arms and followed him as he headed upstairs.

The older man walked into their little girl’s bedroom, Jeongguk staying to watch from the doorway, and quietly tucked Yumi into her flower-printed bed. He carefully moved her bangs out the way and placed a soft lingering kiss on her forehead. He probably would have stayed right there by her bedside if it weren’t for the hand that came down on his shoulder lightly.

He turned to look at his husband. “Let’s get to bed, too.” Jeongguk whispered.

Taehyung nodded and took the hand Jeongguk had held out to him, falling a step behind him as he was led out of their daughter’s room and into their own, which was just two doors away.

Jeongguk motioned towards the bed while he closed the door behind them. He left it unlocked, knowing how likely it was that they would be getting a midnight visit tonight. He watched as Taehyung sat on the edge of their king-sized bed and sighed.

“Kookie-”

“Tae-”

They spoke and cut themselves off at the same time. Jeongguk managed to let his lips curl into a small smile but it quickly slipped away into a frown. “. . . I’m sorry.”

Taehyung looked at him in mild surprise. He just continued. “You’re right, I should have paid more attention. Yumi. . . could’ve gotten killed if I had realized just a minute too late that she’d been following me.” Jeongguk’s gaze darkened as he looked down. “I would never-”

“Jeongguk.” There was guilt where Jeongguk would have expected malice in his husband’s voice. He raised his head and saw that Taehyung had laid down and was patting the spot next to him, a silent invite to join him on the bed. He hesitated only a second before complying and moving to lay on his side, facing the older.

A silence that floated between them wasn’t tense, but it certainly wasn’t calm either. Then Taehyung spoke, his voice just above a whisper. “It wasn’t your fault, Kookie.” Jeongguk opened his mouth to argue but Tae stopped him short with a finger to his lips. “Like you said earlier, our Yumi was raised by us, so of course she’d pick up some things here and there. It was wrong of me to put all the blame on you.”

“But Taehyung . You can’t possibly think it was okay for me to be completely oblivious to the fact that I had a child following me into my car - who the hell knows how she managed that-, and into a heavily fortified mansion. I had no fucking clue she was there until just before you called me-”

“And you think it was fine for me to not realize our child was missing for two hours? Jeongguk I should have noticed she was missing within the first five minutes!”

Jeongguk frowned. “You were busy dealing with that investigation. It wasn’t your fault.”

“Then it wasn’t yours either. You were busy with the mission.” Taehyung retaliated. The smug look on his face told Jeongguk that he wasn’t winning this battle. He let out a long sigh and leaned forward to capture his husband’s lips with his, caressing his cheek. Taehyung responded with a small sound of content and wrapped an arm around his waist.

When he parted a few minutes later, they smiled at each other and pressed their foreheads together. This will never get old, Jeongguk thought fondly. They fought often, just like normal couples do. Just minor arguments that had maybe a fingertip of heat to them. But the two of them had been together through thick and thin for as long as he could remember, and never had they let anything get between them. Not even this.

Jeongguk held Taehyung to his chest as the latter drifted off to sleep, running his fingers through his hair. He would have let himself fall asleep too if he hadn’t remembered the reason he left the door unlocked. So he just let his eyes fall closed but kept his mind busy so he’d stay awake for a little longer

And just as he predicted, at around 1 in the morning tiny footsteps came padding up to the door. Jeongguk could see from the corner of his eyes the door slowly sliding open quietly, and he turned his head to smile at his daughter.

Yumi was tightly holding her stuffed pink spider to her chest and her eyes were sleepy and wet with tears. Jeongguk cooed and motioned her forwards, wrapping an arm around her and hoisting her onto the bed between him and Taehyung once she was close enough.

The change in her face was practically instant.

She went from upset and lost to completely at ease to the moment she snuggled into her papa’s arms, her father subconsciously kissing the back of her head from behind her.

Jeongguk laughed silently as he watched her fall asleep in a span of seconds once she was in a comfortable position. This often happened when they failed to protect Yumi from the gruesome parts of their work. Initially, when it happens she’ll seem perfectly fine, if not amazed. But later the following night, she’d either have a nightmare or just wake up feeling lonely, and then get out of bed in search for comfort from her parents.

Jeongguk hated it and wished he and Taehyung didn’t have to kill but the two of them were hunted by dangerous people and it left them no other. Also, Jeongguk rather liked being able to rid this world of horrible people who don’t deserve their wealth and status.

And people who abandoned or abused children like Yumi when they’re defenseless and weak. Especially if they had no valid reason to. The fucking pricks.

With a soft sigh, Jeongguk shook his head to clear his thoughts and pulled his family closer, smiling at the way Yumi giggled in her sleep when she felt herself being squished. He pressed his lips to her cheek before carefully leaning over her to capture Taehyung’s lips, and then he settled back in his spot and closed his eyes.

He’d kill anyone for those two.
