Work Text:
The night was still young. Crisp winds flew past Tobio and disheveled his locks of ebony. Crickets sang their songs from miles away, the sound reverberating in the darkness. The shadows of the trees could not overthrow the ways his mind ran. Tobio stood on his balcony, watching the trees sway as his mind wandered.
He was deep into his thoughts when his phone lit up with a sound. He fished the small device out of his pocket to check whatever had interrupted his bubble. Upon unlocking his phone, a photo of his boyfriend kissing Tobio's cheek greeted him. An undeniable frown appeared on his features, deepening the creases on his forehead. It was not every day that the blonde showed affection, so Tobio made sure to cherish every drop of endearment Kei gave.
However, like any other relationship, theirs faced an obstacle. The fingers on his one hand could not count the years they were together, yet it did not stop misunderstandings from blocking their path. It was inevitable; that much they knew.
With a shake of his head, Tobio finally decided to open the message he received. It was from Kei, the very reason why he was outside pondering millions of thoughts per second. Tobio's brows knitted together in confusion.
His boyfriend did nothing but send him a mysterious text. The message was a picture of a violation ticket with a Spotify code at the bottom. It baffled Tobio. Series of unanswered questions filled his mind, not a piece fitting the puzzle. Why would Kei do that when they just fought? It was bound to raise suspicion seeing that the two of them hadn't communicated for two whole days, and now, Kei decided to send Tobio a playlist.
Although doubtful, Tobio opened his Spotify app to scan the code. He did not know what to expect. The only reason why Tobio bought a premium account in Spotify was his boyfriend. They often listened to Kei's favorite songs from the blonde's phone. He insisted that the setter would make an account so that Kei could send him playlists.
When the app loaded the playlist, butterflies erupted in his stomach. It was unbelievable. Tobio didn't deem it possible for him to feel ecstatic after years of being together. His peers even considered a potential breakup after a maximum of a month. Their romance prevailed. The two were now nine years into the relationship, and it's still going. Love was truly beautiful.
The playlist was simply a short one, an invitation of some sort. It only contained Tobio's three favorite instrumentals: Meet me by Denise Billingsley, at the park by fantompower, and at midnight by pastels.
As much as he wanted to suppress the goofy grin from growing on the corners of his lips, it was undeniable that he missed the salty blonde. Tobio spent the rest of the evening fixing his appearance, making sure he looked his best for tonight. He was completely aware that there was no need for him to do such; however, he just felt like looking extra good for his boyfriend as if it were their first date. Tobio even went out of his way to consult his senior Asahi for his outfit.
Hours went by, and the clock now read 11:29 PM. Tobio hadn't noticed the time flew by because of the anxiety eating on his thoughts. His heartbeat sprinted faster than his fastest running record. He could break a world record without even noticing because of how nervous he was. His hands shook while sweating profusely. Tobio inhaled deeply, forcing himself to forget about his worries.
The walk to the park was silent aside from the frogs that croaked and the crickets that chirped. No one else roamed the street except for Tobio. It was dark. The only sources of light there were the moon, the stars, and the fireflies. It was a pleasant sight, and Tobio adored it. If somebody offered him to have the walk-in-the-park kind of relationship, he didn't want it. There was nothing else in the world that could replace the way Kei made him feel.
The element of solemnity did not fade even after he arrived at the park. It was empty, apart from the tall giant that stood out. Tobio took regard for Kei's effort on his appearance but said nothing. They didn't exchange words as they embrace each other. Their hold was tight, unwilling to let go. The midnight sky was their only witnesses.
Their love wasn't easy at all, but nights like these made it all worth it.
Kei buried his face into the crook of Tobio's neck. The latter fastened his arms more around the taller man. A mere hug was the only thing they needed to soothe each other's worries. In each other's arms, they felt contented.
"What was that playlist, Kei?" Tobio teased after they loosened the hug. "Missed me so much you couldn't resist messaging?"
Kei chuckled a sweet melody that sent shivers down Tobio's spine.
"Oh, shut up," Kei replied. "You look like you're about to model with your outfit."
The man in question squinted his eyes, feigning offense. "Look who's talking."
Kei scoffed but laughed it off. He placed a gentle kiss on Tobio's nose, amused at the raven's disappointed frown when he pulled away.
"You missed," Tobio uttered.
Kei raised a single brow and acted as if he were thinking about it. "I'll kiss you only if you promise not to water Spikasaurus Rex ever again."
Tobio huffed. He heaved a sigh, admitting defeat. "Fine, I'll never water your succulent again."
With a smile, Kei pressed his lips firmly against Tobio's. The kiss was chaste and passionate. Imaginary sparks ignited somewhere in the background. In their perspective, nothing else mattered at the moment but the two of them. Right now, they were two lovers lavishing one another's presence in a world of their own.
When they pulled away, Tobio murmured a quiet, "It's not my fault that little prick is over the top."
At that, Kei shook his head with a snicker. He couldn't resist planting another kiss on his boyfriend's puckered lips. He was more than glad he had lowered his pride to invite Tobio over to the park. A smile was on Tobio's face during the kiss, one that he couldn't withstand, nor did he try to.
“I love you, Kei,” Tobio whispered when they parted.
Tobio caressed his lover’s cheek, memorizing every detail. He traced the lines on Kei’s face, satisfied with the way the latter leaned into his touch. He also admired the redness on Kei’s cheeks, which he dismissed as "caused by the cold."
“I love you too, my beloved.”
