Chapter Text
The house is empty and void of life. Nothing is heard except for wind blowing through a cracked open window. Work tools, computer parts and various snacks are laid out across the dining table. The moon’s bright glow flows into the living room, focusing on the coffee table where several comic books and game controller could be found.
The calming silence of the house is soon interrupted by the front door bursting open, followed by the voices of a snarky blue hedgehog and a sassy two-tailed fox.
“That was so easy, I’m yawning!” Sonic rushes over to the living room couch and lays down. Tails follows behind him and goes into the kitchen to get a drink.
“Yeah, I think Eggman is running out of ideas. It was basically over once it started!”
Sonic pulls out his phone and starts scrolling through his social media. He laughs at Tails’ comment and adds, “Honestly, I don’t get why he bothers. He should know he’s no match for us! Did you see the tantrum he had, too?!”
“Ha, yeah!” Tails’ puts a finger over his nose, representing a moustache. He mimics Eggman’s voice. “I’ll get you next time, you little pests! I’m Eggman and I’m the smartest genius alive. Waahhhh!”
Sonic and Tails’ have a laughing fit over the amazing imitation. During the jokes, Sonic’s phone goes off. He checks it to see a text from Knuckles.
Knux [8:45PM]
Hey, are you guys still coming tomorrow? This party is going to be boring as hell without you two.
The message instantly reminds Sonic of the event Knuckles had informed him of last week. Apparently, Rouge had planned to throw an impromptu party on Angel Island. Knuckles wasn’t much of a party person, but he didn’t mind the company. Sonic, of course, was immediately pumped to party with his friends on a warm, Spring day. Tails walks over to Sonic, curious about the text message.
“What’s up? Something happen?”
“Oh, Knux wanted to know if we were coming to the party tomorrow.”
At that statement, Tails suddenly looks like realized something and becomes hesitant. “Oh yeah, um…”
Sonic stares at Tails, confused. “What’s wrong, buddy?”
“I don’t think I’ll make it to the party. I have plans for tomorrow.”
“Huh? You do?”
Tails bashfully looks away. “Yeah, I promised a…friend of mine that I’d hang out with them.”
Sonic didn’t understand why Tails was acting so strange. It was normal to have plans with other friends. Maybe Tails felt bad about turning down the invite? He shrugged off the weird behavior and said, “Well dude, if you got things to do then that’s fine! We’ll save ya some food and drinks from the party.”
Tails smiles sheepishly and nods. “Thanks, Sonic. Tell Knuckles I’ll make it up to him later.”
Looking over at the clock, Tails raises his arms to stretch out his back. “Well, it’s getting late, and that fight - while super easy - tired me out. I’ll see ya in the morning.”
Sonic chuckles at his little brother. “Okay, old man. You get your beauty rest. I’m not tired yet.”
Tails rolls his eyes. “Shut up! Maybe if you went to bed early, you wouldn’t need to chug so much coffee in the morning.”
After he watches Tails go upstairs to his room, Sonic goes back to his phone and sees another message that appeared.
Knux [8:53PM]
Hey, are you asleep?? Come on, dude!
Oh, Knuckles. Always impatient. Sonic responds to his friend’s desperate text.
Sonic [8:54PM]
Yo, sorry my dude! I’m totally gonna be there tmrrw, but Tails said he’s got plans.
Knux [8:54PM]
Oh yeah?
Sonic [8:55PM]
Yeah, he said he promised his friend they’d go out.
Knux [8:55PM]
Ah, so he’s finally going on that date.
Knuckles’ last text throws Sonic off guard. What date was he talking about? It sounded like Knuckles knew more than he did.
Sonic [8:56PM]
What date?
Knux [8:56PM]
Lol oh no…Uh…he didn’t tell you?
Sonic [8:56PM]
Tell me? Tell me what??
There is a long pause before Knuckles’ next message, which puts Sonic on edge.
Knux [8:58PM]
Tails has a boyfriend, dude.
Sonic stares at his screen and reads the message over and over. He doesn’t blink. He doesn’t breathe. The house is once again silent like before. Slowly, Sonic types in his response.
Sonic [9:00PM]
Tails has a WHAT?!
