Work Text:
Dean never thought he'd sleep on a real mattress again. His mattress , Dean thinks as he's roused from his sleep by a tiny shaking voice.
His mattress, his husband on the other side of the bed.
Dean blinks, heart racing from all the residual muscle memory of night terrors that lived in his head and the real terrors that yanked him by his leg from under the covers. As he sits up, the world settles itself.
His son. Their son.
Dean keeps his voice a whisper, Cas finally asleep. He has weeks where Cas lies awake at his side for hours and hours. Sleep is precious, a commodity, even now. "Jack, are you okay?"
Jack stands a foot away from the bed, his mismatched bee and dinosaur jammies rumpled from sleep. He stands still for a beat before tears well up in his eyes, his voice hiccuping. "Momma, I threw up."
Dean's heart splits in two. He doesn't know when he got this soft, but he knows he fought tooth and nail, bloody for years, for the right to be. Dean reaches out a hand, closing the distance between him and Jack, inviting him closer, giving him permission. Dean's not sure when Jack started having issues with reaching out, he's worried he's the one who taught him it. Cas says it's not his fault, but still, he worries, he regrets.
"Shh...'s okay." Dean can make up for those moments of pain now. Jack takes one tiny step forward. He's still so small that Dean can pick him up with one arm and toss him up so he's flying. Just barely, but he can. He hushes him, head tilted to the side, lips pursed holding in a sad expression of his own. Jack looks up at him, still unsure, but the tears start to subside.
"Hey, hey now, c'mere…" Dean whispers, and then smiles when Jack walks into the hoop of his outstretched arm, bumping his forehead against Dean's open palm. "There you go, that's it…shh…"
Dean swoops out his other arm to pull him close and plants a kiss into his hair. "It's alright." He murmurs. And that much is true. He knows now that it's true.
"D'you feel like it'll happen again?"
Jack shakes his head, and Dean smiles a tiny, loving sunbeam from his cheeks, and lifts Jack up, tucking him underneath the covers between him and Cas.
Jack looks at him with half lidded, sleepy eyes, touching the top of his head with curiosity. Dean must make a face because Jack sniffles and gives him a secretive smile. "Is a flower gonna grow where you kissed me by morning?"
Dean pulls the covers up over himself and places another one on his forehead. "Who told you that?" He asks (in confidence, of course).
"Dada told me a flower grows where you plant a kiss."
"Oh, well yeah. But you gotta wait a little longer. I bet by next week Dad's gonna have a whole garden of kisses for you. Now get some sleep, pumpkin. You gotta help me make pancakes in the morning."
Yeah. They'll have a garden, and it'll grow beautiful and sprawling. They can do it right this time.
Everything is finally alright.
There's peace, now, that it is done.
