Chapter Text

Eraserhead died in the middle of one of his patrols. Present Mic had been away on a mission at the time and no one was willing to call and let him know that Shouta was dead. They should have been “ The greater good needs to be taken care of first, his mission must go on. ” A pretty lousy excuse if you asked Hizashi. Someone should have told him as soon as they knew, he deserved to know, to at least have the option of saying goodbye to his best friend's corpse, his husband's corpse.

It had started a fortnight ago, Hizashi had to leave for a long mission. The two of them, Hizashi and Shouta, had hugged, kissed and said their normal goodbye before leaving for hero work. This was something they had been doing for over 10 years now, it was normal, something they did without even a second thought. This time however something was wrong from the moment Hizashi stepped foot out that door. Something had felt off, but he couldn't figure out what. He didn’t think anything of it and went about his way to his agency to leave for the mission.

When the mission finally ended and he got his normal phone back it had hundreds of texts and calls. They were all from his friends and the students of 1-A. None from his husband or Son, which in and of itself was not weird as they both knew he would not have his during the mission. But scrolling through the other messages on his phone, made him worry.

“Are you okay?”

“Did you hear the news?”

“Please tell me they told you at least?”

“Hitoshi said you did not have your phone on the mission so I am gonna assume you have not heard because you would be here so Call as soon as you are able”

These were repeated from nearly all of his contacts and even some numbers that he did not have saved. What had gone on? What happened? Who was hurt? Not even in his wildest dreams did he think that Shou could have died and no one told him. It was unimaginable. He was quick to dial Shouta’s number and waited for an answer. He only got the voicemail to his husband’s phone.

“Hey Shou is everything okay, I just got my phone back and it was full of missed calls and text, none from you though so I need you to call me back as soon as you can. I'm heading home now. I love you.”

He rushed home as fast as he could dreading finding out just how hurt whoever was hurt was. He knew it was not good if Shou had not answered. Was it his son? Was his son hurt? Was His husband hurt? Those were all he could think of that would cause Shouta to not answer his phone for Hizashi’s call. He always answered unless on patrol and it was the middle of the day so Shou couldn’t have been on patrol. He threw open the door to their apartment and walked in.

“Shou?” No one answered. So he called out again louder this time not really caring if he bothered the neighbors.

Hitoshi came out of their bedroom. His face looked dead, eye bags darker then ever like he had not slept at all.

“Pops?” Hitoshi looked at him and sprinted to wrap his arms around Hizashi. Hitoshi started to cry, burying his face into Hizashi’s chest.

“Oh kiddo, what is wrong little kitten?”

“Pops you need to sit down before I tell you, it is going to hurt.” Hizashi went to sit down and pulled Hitoshi with him to cuddle with on the couch. Hitoshi's voice broke as he started to talk again. “Pops dad is dead. He died on patrol. We buried him last week. Your agency said they would tell you, but you were not at the funeral and I did not know what to do. I wanted to call you, but I knew you would not have your phone, and every time I called your Agency they said that you knew but had to finish the mission. I am sorry pops.”

Hizashi blanked it did not feel right. He held his son to him as both of them cried for the person they lost. Hizashi was mad beyond belief at his agency. What they did  was not okay. His husband, best friend, was dead. They did not tell him. Not even after the mission had ended. He would never forgive his agency for that. He did not know if he would ever go back to them because he was gone when his entire world broke, and they chose to not tell him, they chose to let him keep going like nothing had happened. But for now before he made the decision he needed to comfort his son, and then go to the graveyard and say goodbye to his husband.

“It is not your fault kiddo, You should not have been the one to have to tell me, that is not on you kid, My agency should have told me. They did not and that will never be your fault. Thank you for trying. Thank you for taking care of him, I am so sorry you had to do it alone.”

“I wish you could have been here, but I was not alone pops, I had Kami which was great, he was great super supportive and just held me and was there for me during everything I needed.” Hitoshi pulled back from the hug. “Can we go to his grave together? I want to visit him but have not been able to yet, and you need to go see him.”

“Yea, that sounds great, come on kid let’s go see Shou” Hizashi carefully stands up and takes his son's hand as they both walk out the door. “Lead the way”

Hitoshi carefully guided them the short walk to where Shou had been placed to rest. And sat down in front of the small headstone, it was just ashes underneath but they still had a small headstone made for those that wanted to be able to visit him.

“Hey dad I got pops with me, he finally knows” Hitoshi starts to cry again, they had cried a lot since it happened knowing that his dad was dead and that pops just found out.

“Hi, Shou. What happened? I was not here you went and died on me. You left me, you left Toshi. We miss you. We need you. Shou I love you I always have and I always will, I hope wherever you are that you are with Oboro again and the two of you are happy, I will be there eventually but I can not leave our son alone. He still needs me, but please keep my spot in that hug open and warm for me, I will be claiming it again.”

He reached forward and ran his hands along the word written on the gravestone, before standing up and turning his back to the grave. He could not bear to look at it anymore. He did not want to leave his son alone so just sat back to back with Hitoshi.

“Ready pops?” Hizashi nodded and stood taking Hitoshi’s hand again.

“I am going to drop you at home before heading to my agency okay?”

“That is fine pops but why are you heading there, you don’t have to go into work do you?”

“I don’t but I want to go give them a piece of my mind, they never should have kept this from me, I'll be home later”

Hitoshi nods as they make their way back to the apartment. Hizashi offers Hitoshi a kiss on the forehead as they get back to their apartment

“Call Denki if you need to, I love you.” Hizashi left and sprinted to his agency, anger radiating from him as he entered the door, no hero gear to be seen. The other heroes in the room looked at him as he entered the room, they all looked at him like he was crazy. They all had to know it wasn't like it was a big secret to everyone else after all only him. His manager walked up to him.

“Present Mic, shouldn’t you be with your family spending time with them. I am sure they both missed you.” Hizashi seethed how dear this person tell him what he should be doing, after not telling him that Shou had died while he was away, sent him home expecting to find both his husband and his son waiting for him.

“My family? My family, how dare you try and tell me my family missed me. My husband died while I was away. My Son had to tell me today that his dad was dead. You don’t get to talk about my family anymore. How could you keep that from me.”

“You were on a mission Mic, you needed to complete that first, lives were on the line. We did not need you distracted.”

“That was not your call to make. I needed to know my husband was dead, I needed to see him, to say goodbye. But no you were too worried about your mission going off without a hitch to care about one of your heroes. I wasn't even that useful someone else could have easily taken my place.”

“It was your mission Mic. I made the call that was for the greater good, I will not apologize for the decisions that were made to protect the country.”

Hizashi turned and walked out of the room, it was getting late now anyway and he wanted to get back to Hitoshi to cuddle him a while before they both went to bed. He would need to strap his old muzzle onto his face for the first time in years that night. He guaranteed he would have nightmares and the one person who could protect them all from his quirk going off in the middle of the night was dead, so the muzzle was something he was going to have to get used to for the rest of his life. He had nightmares regularly and was not going to risk hurting anyone's ears from his screams, that were inevitable.
