Work Text:
Shōyō and Tobio walked toward their hotel where both of their teams were already settling down for the night. Getting caught up on the past two years, the two insisted on staying behind a while longer than the others.
"Your serves are just as ridiculous as always, Kageyama-kun. I mean, did you see the other team’s faces at the end of that last set?! It was awesome. You were like 'bwam!' and they were like 'fwoosh!' and the ball just went flying past like 'fwah!'" Arms waving wildly, Shōyō recounted the events of Tobio's latest match. "Have you always been this good?" he asked, a teasing lilt to his voice.
Tobio scoffed, a grin stretched across his face. "Obviously. Maybe you just had your eyes closed too often to notice."
Shōyō chuckled, shoving his shoulder. "That was only during our first year. Shut up."
"Well then I guess maybe you're just blind. Did the sun strain your eyes in Brazil?" He chuckled, nudging Shōyō's elbow. "Or maybe all the times you received with your face caused you some memory loss."
“Yeah, okay, laugh it up, Kageyama-kun. I’ll have you know that I haven’t had a recieve like that since that game against Nekoma in our third year.”
“I remember that,” Tobio said with a chuckle. “You ended up with a bloody nose and we almost lost. Kinda tough to do our best when the ace can’t play.”
Shōyō shook his head with a giggle. “Ah, whatever. Just shut it, would you?” Walking into the hotel lobby, Shōyō gestured to the elevator door. "After you."
Tobio snickered. "No, no, I insist. Elders first."
"Oh, why thank you, young man. How generous of you. How wonderful the young generation is,” Shōyō said, hunching over and making his voice strained.
They shared a chuckle, stepping into the elevator. Doors sliding shut, the floor jolted as their ascent began.
“Hey, Hinata,” Tobio said quietly.
“Yeah?”
“We should—agh, I don’t know—” he shifted back and forth on his feet. “Wanna go get dinner tomorrow night or something? Like old times?” Grinning awkwardly, he looked up at Shōyō.
Shōyō snickered. “Of course, Kageyama-kun. But don’t expect me to pay for you or anything, I’m kinda broke right now.”
Tobio nodded quickly. “Yeah, sure.” He cleared his throat. “I can pay for the both of us, if you’d like.”
Smacking Tobio’s arm, Shōyō laughed brightly. “You’d really do that? That’s unexpectedly kind of you to offe—woah!”
The elevator car halted, the movement causing them both to lose their balance, quickly grabbing onto the side railing. The lights cut out and they sought each other’s gaze in the darkness.
“Are you alright?” Shōyō asked.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Are you okay?”
“A little shaken, but otherwise I’m good. What just happened?”
“I don’t know, power outage maybe? I’m gonna try to call the hotel.”
“Okay, I’m gonna call Bokuto-san.”
Tobio dialed the number on his phone, the line going directly to voicemail. “No good.”
Hinata groaned. He held his phone to his ear. “It’s ringing!”
“Hey, Shōyō! Where are you? Are you still at the bar?” Kōtarō’s voice rang out loudly through the phone speaker.
“No, uh, actually Kageyama-kun and I are currently stuck in the elevator.”
“Shit, seriously? Dude, the power just went out. You’ve got terrible timing. Are you guys gonna be alright in there?”
“What’s wrong, Bokkun?” a faint voice that sounded like Atsumu asked from the background.
“Shōyō and Tobio are stuck in the elevator,” Kōtarō answered, his voice distant.
“Oh shit.”
“I know!” His voice became clear once more. “But for real, are you gonna be okay?”
“Yeah, we should be fine. Kageyama-kun can be annoying, but I’m sure I’ll survive. I’ll text you, alright? I’m gonna go. My battery isn’t doing great.”
“Alright, Shōyō. Hang in there, alright?”
“You got it. Bye, Bokuto-san.”
“Bye!”
Tobio chuckled dryly. “Well, this is ideal.”
“You’re telling me,” Shōyō giggled. With a huff, he pocketed his phone and sat down against the wall.
Tobio began pacing in front of him.
“You doing alright, Kageyama-kun?”
“I mean we’re stuck in this elevator for who knows how long by ourselves with no food or water, so what do you think?”
“Okay, bad question. My bad. Well, come here then,” Shōyō beckoned him.
Tobio stared wide eyed at him, reluctantly sitting down next to him after a few moments.
Shōyō leaned his head on Tobio’s shoulder, making him flinch. “We’ll be fine. We just have to wait it out. Don’t worry about it. I’m sure they’ll get it fixed in no time.”
Tobio took a deep breath, releasing it slowly and relaxing beside Shōyō. “Yeah, you’re probably right. I can’t remember the last time a power outage lasted longer than like an hour around here.”
-
Clothes strewn across the floor of the elevator car, the two lay flat on the floor, fanning their faces while clad in only their undershirts and underwear. The air clogged their lungs, sweat sliding down their skin. The wallpaper of the elevator car cried as it fought to peel away in the humidity. The two breathed heavily as the heat trampled over them.
“How much longer is this gonna take?” Shōyō whined. “I might actually melt into the floor.”
“Shut up, you’re the one who said it wouldn’t take long. You jinxed us,” Tobio accused.
“No, you jinxed us by saying that thing about it not lasting longer than an hour.”
“For fuck’s sake, does it really matter who jinxed us?”
“You brought it up.”
“Ugh, whatever.” Tobio wiped the sweat from his face. “I’m sorry. The heat is just pissing me off right now.”
Shōyō heaved out a sigh. “It’s alright. We are in the same boat after all—or—er, whatever this thing is called.”
“I think it’s called a cabin?”
Shōyō giggled. “That doesn’t sound right either.” Limbs heavy, Shōyō sat up, his head leaning slightly to the side. He turned to Tobio. “Hey, Kageyama-kun, did I ever tell you something?” His speech was slurred as he blinked slowly.
“Tell me what?” Tobio asked, eyebrows furrowed.
“I think I like you.”
Shooting up into a sitting position, Tobio stared wide-eyed at Shōyō. “You what?”
“Actually, I’m pretty sure I’ve liked you since like…” he stared into space for a moment. “Yeah, since second year.” He swayed slightly in place, nearly falling onto his side.
Tobio shuffled forward, steadying Shōyō. “Hey, are you alright?”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. I’m just a little woozy.” He swatted Tobio’s hand away. “So, do you like me too?” His voice became hushed. “It’s fine if you don’t.”
Tobio sighed. “Dumbass. I’ve liked you since our first year.”
“Really?” Shōyō asked, eyes wide and glistening.
Tobio smiled softly. “Yes, I have. Now, are you sure you’re alright? You’re probably dehydrated.” Placing a hand against Shōyō’s forehead, he tried to check his temperature.
Shōyō leaned forward onto his hands. “I told you, I’m—” His arms buckled.
Tobio took hold of his arm, pulling him to his own chest. “You’re not fine. Stop moving around. Just—just hold still for a bit.” His heart rate kicked up. “They’ve got to have it fixed soon. Then, we’ll get you some water, okay?”
Shōyō relaxed in his hold. “Okay, Kageyama-kun.”
Tobio opened his phone, tapping at the screen to pull up updates on the power outage.
Shōyō’s shoulders shook with giggles. “You like me too.”
Tobio smoothed a hand over his back. “Yeah, I do.”
“I confessed first, so I win.”
“What? No you didn’t. I liked you first, so I win.”
Eyes clouded, Shōyō gazed up at Tobio. “If you think I’m wrong, then why don’t you shut me up?”
Tobio’s face burned a bright red. “You’re dehydrated. Quit saying shit like that.”
“So are you saying you lost then?”
“No, I’m saying that me shutting you up can wait until after the power’s back on.”
“Is that a promise?” Shōyō purred.
Tobio huffed out a laugh. “Let’s just call it a challenge.”
“You’re on,” Shōyō said, lips stretching into a wide grin.
The two sat in silence, Tobio fanning the both of them.
Shōyō fidgeted. “Okay, but what if—” He fell quiet as a pair of lips met his own.
Tobio pulled away. “Feel better now?”
Shōyō shoved Tobio, pushing his back against the floor and hovered above him. “Almost.” He descended upon him, their lips meeting sloppily.
Tobio nipped Shōyō’s lip, causing him to whine into his mouth. Tobio took a hold of Shōyō’s shoulders and pushed him back. “Alright, we’re stopping this here. As much as I’d love to make out with you right now, it is already way too hot in here.”
“Are you calling me hot?” Shōyō giggled.
With a sigh, Tobio sat up, pulling Shōyō with him. “No, but you are hot.”
Shōyō groaned with a grimace. “That didn’t make any sense.”
“Oh, shut up, yes it—”
The car jolted and the lights came on. They began moving upwards again.
“Holy shit, the power’s back on. Hinata, grab your clothes.”
The two scrambled, collecting their clothing items and pulling them on in a flurry. The doors to the elevator opened and they ran into the hall, soaking up the cool air.
“I never thought I would be so happy to feel the cold,” Shōyō whined. He leaned against Tobio’s side, his eyes closed.
“You and me both.”
Footsteps came stampeding down the hall. “Shōyō, is that you?”
Shōyō’s eyes flew open. “Yeah, Bokuto-san, we’re down here!”
Kōtarō came into view, immediately sprinting toward the both of them. “You guys were in there for hours and you look like shit. Are you alright?”
Shōyō nodded. “I will be.”
“Huh?” Kōtarō lifted an eyebrow.
Shōyō grabbed Tobio by the hand, dragging him away. “I’m gonna go get some water. Make sure to let everyone know we’re okay,” he called over his shoulder.
“Yeah, Shōyō-kun!” Atsumu yelled from further down the hall. “Get it so ya can finally shut the hell up about ‘im.”
Shōyō laughed, entering his room with Tobio in tow and shutting the door behind them.
