Work Text:
Yiga music was adopted from their Sheikah ancestors, with the same drums, flute, shamisen and lyre used in their songs. When the Yiga played this music for Master Kohga, he often danced for them. His dancing was elegant and graceful, yet there was a certain bumbling to it that was uniquely Kohga’s.
When Sooga arrives to deliver news of Zelda and Link, Kohga does not stop dancing, choosing instead to continue his flowing movements that mesmerized all who saw it. He moved his arms in this way that reminded Sooga of a river, how it was all in sync and streamlined, and Kohga’s legs and hips moved as well to the beat of the song.
When Sooga approaches, the Yiga band halts playing. Master Kohga seems disappointed in this, looking at them sternly and snapping his fingers as if to wordlessly tell them to keep playing. And they did, continuing the melody right where they left off. Sooga clears his throat and addresses Kohga respectfully, as he always did.
“Master Kohga. I have news.” He says simply, bowing in his lord’s presence. Kohga leaps down from the stage he stood upon, spinning and humming his way over to Sooga. Sooga was confused when he began to be pulled by Kohga onto the stage himself, Kohga leading him up the steps and dancing some more when he finally got back up on the raised platform.
“Can it wait, Sooga? I’m kinda busy here,” he says, and Sooga’s head tilts to the side.
“I… assume it would be pressing. Weren’t your orders for me to—“
“Orders, schmorders!” Kohga seemed to be in a delightfully good mood, twirling about with a bounce in his step. “Dance with me, Sooga! There’s your new orders!”
“Oh. Um. Of course, Master Kohga. But… I’m afraid I don’t know how to dance.”
“Don’t know how?!” Kohga repeats incredulously, halting his dancing mid-twirl and putting his hands on his hips with authoritative sense. “Sooga, that simply won’t do!” He pulls Sooga against him as the song gets slower and more sensual. “I’ll just have to teach you! That’s all!”
Sooga seemed taken aback by this, the notion almost absurd to him. Sooga had not been coached by Kohga in anything, let alone the art of dance. This would prove to be interesting.
“I’m not sure if I am worthy, Master,” Sooga complains as he is pressed against Kohga, who was slightly smaller than him in stature, with their fingers laced together already and Kohga leading a clumsy Sooga through a dance. Sooga stumbled and fumbled, coughing nervously. “That is, I don’t know if I can.”
“Sure ya can! Just follow my lead!” Kohga instructs, and Sooga tries his best to keep up as they waltz and sway through the song.
Kohga’s steps are wide and hard to keep up with, and it was obvious Sooga was having a tough time of it, so Kohga slows down a tad, stepping less lively and with less energy. He kept it to just small shuffling. The one, two, fhree, turn was an easy enough pattern to memorize on Sooga’s part, and Kohga seemed to be having fun, laughing and humming through it. Kohga looked up at Sooga, Sooga looking back down at Kohga… It was almost… intimate… the way they danced.
Kohga feels confident enough to switch up the steps when Sooga gets the hang of the easy part. With that, Kohga rests his dancing-weary head on Sooga’s chest (well… upper stomach, actually). Kohga sighs happily and Sooga blushes underneath his mask. He was glad Kohga couldn’t see his lovestruck face.
“Alright, now spin me.”
“What?”
“You heard me! Give me a spin!”
“Can you demonstrate?” Sooga asks lowly, and Kohga obliges, spinning outward and then back in when the music swelled. His timing and moves were truly impeccable!
“Ah,” Sooga grunts. “I see. May I try, Master Kohga?”
“Sure thing! Just don’t let me go spinning off the stage! Hold onto me!” Sooga does as he is taught, proving to be a quick study as he twirls Kohga out and then reins him back in. Feeling bold, Sooga switches their positions and then dips Kohga down, Kohga letting out a scared little whooooa as Sooga did so. Kohga was held up easily with Sooga’s arm strength, however, and Sooga clicks their masks together in a faux kiss.
Kohga was silent for once in his life.
When Sooga draws back, Kohga wants to smash these stupid masks and kiss Sooga for real!
Sooga then brings Kohga back up, and Kohga is at a loss for words, only staring up at Sooga as the song ends and their dance is over.
“How did I do?” Sooga asks.
Kohga snaps out of his daze. “Not bad for an amateur,” he compliments, then starts stepping down from the stage and snapping his fingers once again, making the Yiga band members disappear in a plume of smoke and flurry of talismans. “But all that dancing’s got me worn out, ya know… Meet me in my quarters for that report. Oh, and next time we dance, I won’t go so easy on ya!”
Sooga was smiling, though Kohga couldn’t see it.
“Understood, Master Kohga.”
