There was a time, many seasons ago, before even the Clans, when we did not have the four seasons as we have them now. Instead, there was only night and day.
During the day, every creature in the forest was awake. Mice and cats and foxes and badgers all roamed the forest together. At night, every creature rested. In this way, the night and day were equal. But some creatures realized they were better suited to the night, and wanted to stay awake for it instead.
Feeling they had been treated unjustly, the night looked sympathetically on its children, and decided that the night would not end.
