Chapter Text
“Koushi!”
Someone calls for him, loud enough for him to hear and groan in response.
He slowly opens his cloudy grey eyes and stares at his silver ceiling above him and realises his alarm had been going off the whole time. Throwing his platinum covers away from him, he gets up from his bed with his ash-blonde bed hair curling up at the ends.
Groggily walking into the bathroom, he stares into the mirror at his reflection.
Light grey skin and his tired dark grey eyes, the black mole under his left eye and the grey PJs he was wearing.
He didn’t mind only seeing just greys, whites and blacks, to be fairly honest, he liked looking at those colours. They all looked the same to him but just different shades of grey instead of those vibrant hues that those who have found their soulmates can say.
His mum always liked to say he had the prettiest of hazel brown eyes and soft silky silvery hair. Suga didn’t mind about the hair colour because he could already see it but…
Hazel brown? I wonder what that looks like…
He placed a finger under his bottom eyelid and looked into his eyes. They didn’t seem any special. His grey eyes were enough, they didn’t need to look pretty or anything. Why was his mum so caught about it?
Speaking of his mum, “KOUSHI! GET UP BEFORE I MAKE YOU!”
“Ok! I’m up!” Suga shouted back, looking into his own eyes at his reflection.
I’m fine with my grey world. It doesn’t matter what colour eyes I have.
“Sometimes I question why you don’t want to see colours,” his mum commented while sighing blissfully, “it’s the best thing that can ever happen.”
Suga quietly ate his grey breakfast, “I don’t see the purpose of seeing colour.”
“It's an amazing thing, Koushi. When it happens to you, it’ll be the best thing that's happened in your life.”
“Really?”
She played with the fork and nodded her head, “Yes, you’ll miss it when you don’t ever see it again.”
Best thing huh?
Breathing in the fresh air and the sounds of the birds chirping from the powerlines greeted him. Suga looks up at the light grey sky and the puffs of white clouds hovering above him. He slides his hands inside his black jacket as his neck is wrapped around with his favourite grey scarf.
Dark grey cars drove past and grey buildings situated further away. He stood there lost in thoughts as the crossing lights turned grey and began walking through the white striped crossing.
Why are people so caught up with colour? What was so amazing about seeing colours? It only brings troubles and misfortune.
“Suga!”
He stopped his tracks and turned around to the person who called out for him who was his dark grey-haired friend.
“Daichi,” he called with a smile.
“I called for you three times…” He huffed, out of breath and looked up to him, “Is there something wrong, Suga? You seemed kind of off.”
Suga slapped his head and grinned, “What are you talking about? I’m completely fine!”
Daichi rubs the back of his head from the pain, “I know that face anywhere. Don’t tell me it’s about practice yesterday…”
Suga rolled his eyes, “Why would I be thinking about that?”
“Are you ok with Kageyama taking your spot for the Aoba Johsai practice match today?”
Right… that happened, that completely slipped my mind.
“He’s not going to be the official setter, it’s just because someone requested it for that to happen. I’m not making it easy for him to steal my spot. You’re thinking about it too much, Daichi, it’s not the end of the world.”
Besides, Kageyama isn’t the one on my mind right now.
He gave him an unsure look, “If you say so. Just let me know if something’s wrong, ok?”
“Ok but I’m fine, stop acting like a parent,” Suga assured, entering the front gates of Karasuno.
Who would want to be forced to love someone just because you can see colour? I want to find someone I like, not someone I’m going to hate and be forced with them because we’re ‘soulmates’.
“Morning!” Suga chirped, opening the door to their clubroom.
Hinata stiffly turned his head around and looked like he saw a ghost, “M-morning! S-Suga-san!”
“What’s going on?” He looked over to Tanaka and squinted his eyes at his suspicious avoiding eye contact, “did you say something to him to make him act like this?”
“N-no. Blame Kageyama!” He immediately pointed to Kageyama, shifting the blame to him.
The black-haired junior confusedly stared at Suga, “What?”
Suga sighed and looked over to the frightened grey-haired junior, “What’s wrong, Hinata?”
“N-Nothing! I-I’m going to get some fresh air!”
The others watched him leaving the club room, staggering and nearly tripped over but he made it outside safely.
It’s clear that Hinata is scared. I mean, it’s his first practice match so I don’t blame him but hopefully those two-
He glances over to Tanaka and Kageyama.
-Aren't going to give him more pressure.
During their game against Aoba Johsai, it was how Suga had anticipated the sets were going to go. Karasuno was doing horrible due to Hinata freaking out in the first set and the massive pile of pressure put onto him.
Thankfully, Kageyama made him stop panicking after a very intimidating experience, towering down on Hinata and giving him the confidence he needs. They were suddenly getting the rhythm, which was a big relief.
Suga sighed and relaxed his shoulders as the second set was their win. They were taking a timeout to get ready for the third set.
Now we just needed to win this set to beat Aoba Johsai. It’ll be easy-
“OIKAWA-KUN!!!”
Time felt like it stopped, when he thought everything was going to go well. Suga stood by the door and was engulfed with a scent of vanilla, radiating from someone else, from behind.
The sudden splash of orange coated the courts that he stood on. The shoes he’s always worn to volleyball were white and bluish green.
The gym that they were in was different shades of brown.
His eyes wandered to the windows on the gym walls and peeking out was the bright blue sky with the white clouds along with the green grass patches outside.
It was beyond his imagination, this was the colours that his mother talks about and yearns for…
It was no longer just greys and whites. Everything had its own colour.
A looming figure with chocolate brown hair and piercing complementing brown eyes staring into his. Wearing a white jacket with teal accents with ‘Aoba Johsai’ on the back of it, pink-tinted lips, fair skin and-
“So you decided to come, Oikawa. Are you ok to play?” Their coach asked, interrupting their small moment.
The brunette looks over to Suga once more before walking over to his coach, “It’s just a slight sprain. They said I could play,” he replied with a grin on his face, doing an ok sign with his index finger and thumb.
Suga trembled with his knees weak and wanting to fall on the ground in misery.
No… this can’t be happening…
A hand placed on his shoulder, “Suga? Are you ok?” Daichi asked with a frown on his face.
Daichi has brown hair and brown eyes… he suited grey just fine dammit.
Suga nervously gulped and nodded his head, “Y-yeah, I’m fine. Seems like we’ve got a bigger problem now.”
I can’t get used to this.
“Yeah. And we were getting comfortable as well.”
The whistle called for the beginning of the third set while Oikawa walked to get ready by stretching and Suga sat back on the bench.
He felt an intense stare on him during the third set. He didn’t dare to look over because he knew. He knew who was staring at him.
Oikawa Tooru… the captain and the starting setter. Why… Why does it have to be him? Why is he my soulmate out of anyone?
“Suga-san? You alright?” Yamaguchi asked, worryingly.
The silver head looked at the green-haired junior and smiled, “I’m a bit sad that Kageyama gets all the action out there.”
His hazel eyes moved over to the Seijoh’s captain subconsciously.
A smirk was plastered onto Oikawa’s lips, pointing to his brown eyes with a finger before winking at him.
Suga began to feel his face burning, his hands clutching tightly onto his black track pants and glared back towards him. He didn’t deserve to have the ‘luxury’ of seeing colours if his soulmate was going to be an asshole.
He never asked for it.
I hate him. I hate fate and him.
Soon the whistle blew, declaring the win to Karasuno but the whole time the silver-haired Karasuno member couldn’t stop observing his surroundings and getting used to these new colours.
Blue. Brown. Orange. Red. Purple. Pink.
“Stupid colours…” he frustratedly muttered under his breath.
Making his way towards the bathroom, he is greeted by the sound of footsteps behind him as their steps were echoing through the hallway. They weren’t even trying to hide or be sneaky about it, it’s like they wanted to be caught.
Suga stopped mid-way and didn’t want to deal with him right now, “I’m not interested in being your soulmate, Oikawa-san.”
He made eye contact with the smirking captain, “Oh~? So forward and very unexpected from Mr Refreshing,” he replied with a playful tone, hitting one of Suga’s nerves, “but I guess you’re not as refreshing as I assumed.”
Mr Refreshing? Is that my weird nickname?
“I’m not a fan of this soulmate thing so it’s better off if you find someone else. I’m not going to be with you just because you gave me colours, got it?” Suga bitterly stated, glaring at him.
Oikawa began to laugh, not fazed by his words, “Did you expect me to ask you out just because we’re soulmates? You are pretty funny, Mr Refreshing~. Funny enough, I don’t like you either, you know because you're not up to my standards. They're pretty high.”
His silver brows twitched, this guy was really pissing him off, “Good, at least we’re on an agreement.”
“Just before you go, what’s your name, Mr Refreshing?-”
I thought you didn’t want to know me.
“-Well, you know, since you know what my name is obviously. It would be pretty rude if you don’t introduce yourself, don’t you think, Mr Refreshing?” he added with a mocking look.
Suga gave him a fake smile and tried to contain his annoyance towards the brunette, “Sugawara Koushi, but you can call me Suga.”
A grin played onto his pink lips, “It was nice knowing you, Suga-chan. I hope we become friends and get to play against each other if you become the starting setter but you know from today’s performance, we kind of know who’s earning the spot.”
We both know you were the one who got Kageyama to play today.
“I don’t think you can say much, you hardly played in the set, Captain. You never know if your junior might take your spot either and…” Suga approached Oikawa and whispered in his ear, “Sorry Oikawa-san, I don’t think we can be friends. I don’t have the energy to pretend that I like you.”
Oikawa’s brow twitched, amused, “Then I guess you’re missing out on all the fun, Suga-chan. Too bad.”
“Sugawara-san? What are you doing out here?” Kageyama asked, coming out of the bathroom along with Hinata, Kunimi and Kindaichi.
“Oikawa-san?” Kindaichi questioned.
Suga’s mood changed, patting both of his junior’s heads, “Hinata, Kageyama! I was looking for both of you! You two did great out there!”
“Thanks!”
“We’re about to leave. Let’s go before Daichi tells us off,” he suggested, pushing them towards the gym and glancing over to Oikawa with a smirk on his lips.
As the flock of crows left the scene, Oikawa’s hands and teeth tightly clenched, in irritation.
I’ll get rid of that smile in a second from those pretty lips of yours…
“Just you watch, Suga-chan, you will fall in love with me and then I’ll reject you afterwards and you’ll be miserable for the rest of your days.”
Kunimi and Kindaichi stared at him in confusion but decided to not question their captain’s weird mumbling.
