In a rare instance of social engagement, He Xuan opened his mouth, parted his lips just a little, to show what was usually tucked away. Hua Cheng’s focus snagged on them. He Xuan opened his mouth further, feeling the slick enamel slide against his lip, watching Hua Cheng’s eye widen as he took in their full length.
Here was what He Xuan looked like after swallowing the ocean whole: Needle-thin fangs, pale-green skin with cold veins showing through and scales decorating the edges, slit pupils set in gold irises and black sclera, ears that pointed like stars, hair that was not hair, limbs too long and skinny and flexible, twin ladders of ribs that could both withstand a flood and be cracked open with a single hand.
Thumb on his lower lip, Hua Cheng met him head-on (as he always did) and kissed him.
