Chapter Text
Sam settles into bed with the book he’s been reading by 9:40 PM. Honestly it’s earlier than he has any other night that week, stuff needing to be done at the VA or just other tasks or errands that have all piled up to this week.
Even now on a Friday night he finds himself sighing as he rests his eyes for a moment as he lets the tension seep out of him. Next week will be better, not as many things planned. Heading into the weekend, he can spend it mostly at home with his boyfriend, maybe have a date night.
Getting engrossed in his book, the only distraction proving to be the front door opening and the clattering of noises coming from down stairs, sounding the arrival home of said boyfriend. Listening as the door shuts, two clunks of boots settling by the door, he glances towards the clock on the night stand and finds glowing numbers reading back 10:51 PM.
Honestly he’s surprised he’s home so early, having gone out to drink with Sharon, Carol, and Thor. Something they do every other weekend if they can. Usually Sam joins them, but didn’t feel up to it, just wanting to be comfortable at home after a long week. Placing the bookmark back in the book, putting it down on the nightstand as he tries to fight the smile growing across his face as he hears the heavy footsteps clambering up the stairs, a curse muttered here and there.
It isn’t long before a blonde head, furrowed brow, and the tall form of his boyfriend is heading into their bedroom soft glow of the lamp beside Sam casting him golden, warm hues. He’s muttering something under his breath, something Sam doesn’t catch, but he’s sure it was something along the lines of, “Stupid stairs, who decided we should buy a house with stairs.”
“Careful there. Pretty sure that was your choice.” Sam chuckles as Steve looks up and blinks once, twice, almost surprised to see Sam awake and waiting for him.
Frown dissipating nonetheless, a grin that rivals the brightness of the sun spreads across Steve’s face, eyes crinkling as he makes his way over to the bed. “Sam.” He breathes, crawling onto the bed and over to him, as if staying away for a moment longer would be the worst kind of hell.
Grunting as Steve tumbles into him, burying his face against the side of Sam’s neck as he grabs onto him, Sam gives a soft laugh as he throws an arm around Steve’s waist, running his other hand through golden soft strands. “Yeah, it’s me.”
Steve hums as he nuzzles Sam’s neck, pulling away and gazing tenderly at Sam. “Missed you.”
Sam rolls his eyes, but his heart still warms at the soft admission, sure it makes its way into his voice as he teases, “It was just a couple of hours, you sap, but I missed your dumbass too.”
Steve giggles at that, rolling onto his back as he closes his eyes for a moment. “Yeah. Missed you too.” Steve murmurs, clearly a bit more out of it as he hums again, turning his head to face him, tender expression still across his face.
Tenderness matching Steve’s across his own face, Sam leans over to the nightstand to turn the lamp off, the previous soft glow of the room turning to a quiet darkness. Turning back to face Steve, he reaches out, arms circling Steve’s slim waist, possibly the only small thing about him, and pulls Steve towards him.
Getting the idea, Steve rolls onto his side, curling to fit in Sam’s hold more as he lets out a yawn that disperses into softer laughter. “Y’gonna be the big spoon?”
Smirking to himself, pressing a soft kiss to Steve’s hair and cuddling closer, Sam presses his temple to the back of Steve’s head. “Aren’t I always?”
Steve gives a sound that’s more of a snort than a giggle, but it’s happy nonetheless. “Yeah, y’are. Love you, Sammy.”
Voice growing quieter, Sam isn’t surprised that Steve is already falling asleep, warm, happy, and safe in Sam’s arms. Humming softly and squeezing him closer, Sam lets out a happy sigh as he gives a final kiss to Steve’s neck, “Love you too, always, Steve.”
