"The moon is beautiful, isn't it?"

or; Reki and Langa confessing their love while lying under the stars.

Notes:

Now that Sk8 is officially over and i don't know what to do with my life, i decided to write this little oneshot.

The idea has been on my mind lately and i finally decided to type it out even if i'm not fully satisfied with the outcome. But it doesn't matter, right?

This story contains no spoiler for the episodes and has no specific place in the anime's timeline.

Please note that English is not my native language so there will be mistakes. I reread it multiple time but i probably missed something.

I hope you enjoy it!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Stars, thousands of fixed luminous points in the endless night sky. All of them million of light years away, yet they shine so brightly that humanity is able to admire their beauty from afar.

Reki sees his own hand stretch out towards the dark abyss, grabbing for the sparkling dots, desiring to feel them against his cool plam. They are seemingly forever shining, mankind destined to never touch them. It was kind of sad, such pretty things unattainable.

The redhead let out a long suffering sigh as he let himself fall back on the grass, his hoodie soaking up the dampness of the ground beneath him. He didn't really care, it felt soothing cold against his heated body. The scratches on his hands and knees still burned slightly, it was a shame that yet another pair of pants was decorated by holes. His mother would scold him again.

His trademark headband long left his forehead, his hair a mess from the many times he ran his hands through it. The old skateboard laid beside him, a few new scrapes added to the sheer number of them after the training he did over the years.

For the teenager it was yet another sleepless night. They pile up recently and Reki knew his mother hears him sneaking out every night, worrying about him but gladly not asking. He wouldn't be able to give an honest answer even if he wanted to. Going to an highly illegal skating race in an abandoned mine was not something a mother had to now. She would have a cardic arrest if she knew what exactly her son was doing every night he left the safety of his bedroom in the middle of the night.

Normaly, he would be at said illegal race track right now, meeting up with Langa beforehand, then with Miya (how his parents even let him leave the house at this time of the day was beyond him) and Shadow before Cherry shows up, tagging along with Joe. Together they would watch beefs of random skaters, argue about the dumbest things or skate down the earthy path he knew like the back of his hand. Maybe he and Miya would even be able to convince one of the adults, most likely Shadow, to fetch some fast food.

But today was different. Today he was alone and not at S, even though his choosed location for teenage angst was, very suprisingly, skating themed. The minimalistic skatepark he and Langa skated in together was as empty at night as it was when the sun was out.

At first he had been concerned a bunch of drunks would claim this place as their own for the night (he did have many uncomfortable run ins with people like that). He was relieved to see that he was all alone. For once, Reki didn't text Langa to join him on his nightly adventure. So he laid there, sprawled out on the grass next to the concreted floor of the skatepark, starring down in the infinite universe.

The sky was cloudless, the perfect condition for stargazing. And between the bundels of light sat the moon, so bright and full he didn't even need a streetlight to see the details of his surroundings. It really was the perfect night to be outside.

The sudden sound of wheels against concrete snapped Reki out of his thoughts, back into reality after he lost himself in the eye of the moon. He didn't even had to tilt his head towards the sound to know who it was. There were not many people in this town who visit the local skatepark at midnight. His suspision was confirmed when the familar blue strands of his best friends hair entered his view.

Langa had his upper body bent over Reki's lying form, his blue eyes soft and a faint smile resting on his lips. He wore his typical clothes, Reki began to ask himself if he even possesed other articles. Probaly not.

"Reki,", Langa always looked so tender when he looked at him, "I didn't know you would be here too. Why didn't you text me?"

The readhead just shook his head with a small grin, "Don't even pretend to be clueless."

"Your window was open.", the blue haired boy explained before lowering himself down next to his friend. "I had trouble falling asleep. Why are you here?"

"Same reason."

It was quite between them for a while. No akward silence, just the two of them looking together at the night sky, each lost in their own thoughts and completely content with the other just being there.

Reki was tired. All these nights staying awake were slowly catching up and he had to stiffle the big yawn that escaped his mouth. Langa let out a quite chuckle as he catched a glimpse of Reki's wide mouth. After that he had a hard time averting his eyes from the tired boys side profile.

Even sluggish from sleep his amber eyes sparkled from the moonlight, it's shape reflecting in them and the stars dancing on his skin. He was so unbelievable beautiful, the sight rivaling the one of the sky. Langa had to fight off the blush threatining to take over his whole face.

"The moon is beautiful, isn't it?"

The words slipped past Langa's lips, him watching eagerly as a blush dusted Reki's cheeks and his eyes widened slightly. His gaze stayed on the moon for a few more moments. When he turned his head to his right, a few strands of his unruly hair falling into his face and a lazy smile on his lips, Langa's heart sped up. It drummed against his ribcage like wanting to be set free.

"It's always been beautiful."

After gazes never leaving each others eyes and hushed words spoke in the lonesome night, the two boys took their leave. Their hands tightly interlocked, they skated down the streets. They weren't going fast, neither doing fancy tricks (for that they would've had to let go of each other) and when they finally climbed through Reki's open bedroom window, the clock struck three in the morning.

The room's owner practically fell on his bed, only caring enough to slip out of his shoes first. The mattress dipped beside him and a warm body curled up at his side. Langa's chin rested against the crown of his head, before he shifted and pressed soft lips against the smooth skin of Reki's forehead.

The receiver of the affection giggled. It was not the first time Langa showered him with small kissed all over his face. He tended to get all touchy and affectionate when he was about to fall asleep. Not that the smaller minded.

"Tomorrow, we'll have to go to the shop.", Reki mumbled into the cloth of the blue hired boy's shirt, "I have a new idea for your board. It's gonna be even better than it is now."

"You are amazing, Reki.", whispered Langa into his hair and the other could practically feel him sparkling as he got squished harder against the Canadian's body. "I wish to skate to the end of the universe with you."

"I'm pretty sure nobody has this much time."

"But spending all of it with you..."

Langas voice grew quiter and quiter at the end of his sentences and soon all Reki could hear from him were the constant inhales of air and occasional soft snores. It didn't take long for the redhead to follow the others lead and falling into a deep slumber, the best he had in weeks.

Notes:

"the moon is beautiful, isn't it?" is a way to say i love you without saying 'i love you'. With both Reki and Langa never speaking on their feelings and stuff and using metaphors, i thought it was a cute idea to have them confess that way.
