Work Text:

Rintarou was going to kill Atsumu as soon as they finished building this desk.

Or maybe, just maybe, he’ll kill him sooner than that because he’s currently dropping all of the screws they need to build the godforsaken desk and losing them under his couch. He’s positive that those screws will get their revenge in five months when he wakes up in the middle of the night to get water.

They still have to build the desk chair that’s sitting untouched in the box next to him. It’s going to take hours at best and days at worst.

“Okay,” Atsumu says. “The little guy here puts pieces C and D together but— Rin, are ya even paying attention? This is your desk we’re making and the people want to see us make it.”

Rin takes another gulp of red wine. The same Rei Ami song has been on repeat for the last twenty minutes, blaring from the Bluetooth speakers that Atsumu gifted him as a housewarming gift. He nods even though he’s not paying attention and Atsumu turns back to the task at hand.

“Call your sugar daddy, cause he’s blowing up my phone,” Atsumu mumbles, fingers fumbling with the little wooden pegs. “I don’t need his money, bitch I get it on my own.”

There’s a dull ache in the base of his skull that is getting progressively worse as it plays in the background, but he refuses to shut it off simply because Atsumu looks so cute singing along with it.

He wonders when he turned so soft for the blonde and takes another sip of wine.

They had everything planned perfectly. Both of their seasons were set to end around the same time so Atsumu offered to ship up to Shizuoka for the first month of the offseason. Rin, being the levelheaded person he is, cleaned his apartment from top to bottom and restocked the kitchen because he knew Atsumu would be disappointed that he was sustaining himself on the frozen gyoza they made months ago.

Everything changed when Atsumu called him, apologies falling from his lips before Rin could even get a word in. Atsumu apparently couldn’t keep his mouth shut about visiting Rin so the MSBY public relations team heard him and thought it would be a great opportunity to have the two of them do a live stream of them building furniture. It’d be a good look for both teams, he said, fans would go wild over it.

Fast forward to his current situation, Rin is quickly working his way through one of the bottles of red wine they picked up at the supermarket earlier that day while Atsumu attempts to follow the Ikea instructions while he streams it for all of his followers.

All Rin wants is to climb into Atsumu’s lap, make out with him, and maybe build the desk later. Or tomorrow. Or any of the other days Atsumu will be there because it’s been far too long since they’ve been able to touch each and they still can’t.

It’s safe to say things are not going the way they originally planned.

“Rin? Are ya listening to me?”

He turns to his boyfriend, glass clutched to his chest. “No.”

“Rin,” Atsumu whines. “Come on, ya said we’d do it together .”

He knows Atsumu is right; he agreed to this after all. Even so, he’ll be damned if he lets some dumb public relations thing get in the way of his time with Atsumu. Rin knows he’s being a brat, knows that the fans watching are probably thinking that he’s using Atsumu to build his desk so he doesn’t have to.

It makes him pout even more.

For a brief moment, Rin thinks about how this looks to all of the fans watching. He thinks about how his agent is going to call him tomorrow and complain about how he wasted an opportunity to gain more fans. Then, he thinks about how excited Atsumu sounded over the phone, going on and on about all the things they’re going to do while he’s visiting.

“What do you need me to do?” Rin sighs, placing his glass on the hardwood next to him.

Atsumu perks up like a puppy, eyes wide and a grin on his face like that was the only thing he wanted to hear all night - and if Rin was being honest, he knows that’s exactly what he wanted. He rationalizes that it can’t hurt to spoil him a bit even if thousands of people are watching. In fact, maybe it’s better they all see.

Let them be jealous that Rin gets to see this side of Atsumu all the time.

Rin learns quickly that Atsumu wasn’t pretending like the instructions were hard just to get him involved. The little pictures are the only thing guiding them to success and they make no damn sense to him. He curses his past self who thought ordering from Ikea would be the easiest thing to do.

Atsumu snorts next to him as he’s trying to shove one of the wooden dowels into a hole.

“Akaashi asked if we were illiterate and that’s why we’re having so much trouble.”

“Tell him,” Rin starts, eyes looking directly at the phone. “That there are no words, only pictures.”

Atsumu’s giggles ground Rin for a moment. He hadn’t realized how agitated he was getting with the pieces in his hands until his grip loosened and they fell into his lap. This whole situation is working out to be one of the worst nights of Rin’s life and he’s annoyed about it.

The random pieces in his lap remind him of everything the night should have been instead of what it is and he reaches for his glass again. There’s no use in pretending that he wants to be building the damn thing. At this point, all he wants is to end the stream so they can make out on the floor.

Which, now that he thinks about it, isn’t a bad idea. Making out on the floor solves all but one of their problems — the live stream being the only thing it can’t solve. But, they can easily move into the hallway for a few minutes under the guise of a break. Rin’s a fucking genius.

Maybe it’s the wine working its way through his system or the comfort of having Atsumu so close to him after so long. Or maybe it’s a combination of both and Rin is just that desperate to have his boyfriend all to himself for a moment.

“Tsumu,” Suna mumbles over his glass, hand waving him closer as his face heats up. “Come here.”

Atsumu leans over the disaster between them. “What’s up, Rin?”

“You’re paying more attention to them than me. ” He pouts at his boyfriend, face flushing even more when Atsumu glances up at him. Rin knows he’s being a brat, but he also knows Atsumu’s weak for it. “Aren’t we supposed to be doing this together ?”

Rin notices a blush crawl across Atsumus face. Annoyance bites at the back of his mind when he remembers his earlier thought of being happy people are watching them. This Atsumu is one that only he gets to see. It’s one that he refuses to share with anyone else and now all of these nobodies are witnessing it.

“I— uh, yeah,” Atsumu sputters. “We are, but a break can’t hurt.”

A smirk cuts across his face at Atsumu's reaction. His nervous reactions whenever Rin got like this were some of his most cherished. Watching the Miya Atsumu get flustered over his boyfriend flirting with him was one of his favorite pastimes. Besides, their shared history never allowed for these moments to peek through the other times spent together.

But, now that he thinks about it, his favorite moments have always been the ridiculous or embarrassing ones instead of the more saucy memories. Whenever Rin would wake up early to be met with Atsumu drooling on the pillow or when he falls in the genkan because he loses his balance while putting on his shoes. He’s so lost in his own thoughts that he hasn’t noticed Atsumu pushing all of the pieces off of his lap only to lean forward and press his lips against Rins.

Even though this isn’t the first time that day Rin tasted Atsumus lips, the lemon chapstick is still a surprise. Atsumus lips are soft, plump in the right spots and Rin can happily spend the rest of his days making out with him. The thought only causes him to bite down, causing Atsumu to gasp and allowing his tongue to slip in his mouth.

One of Atsumu’s hands crawls up his neck and into his hair, knotting his fingers at the strands. And when Rin groans — and damn, does it annoy him to know that Atsumu knows he’ll groan each time his hair is pulled — Atsumu swallows it like he always does. Rin melts into the couch Atsumu pushed him up against when he leaned over. Atsumu is practically in his lap now, one knee between his legs while his other hand rests on his hip.

He’s pretty sure this is what heaven is like.

Rins phone ringing breaks them out of the bubble they’re in, both rolling their eyes at the damn thing. Aran’s name flashing across the screen makes Rins brows furrow. Aran knew they were in the middle of the stream, so it was weird of him to call and if he ready needed them, he would have texted Rin first. He swipes a finger across the screen to answer the call while Atsumu gives him room.

“Are ya both idiots?” Aran’s voice booms through the phone before Rin can so much as breathe. “Seriously. I thought ya knew better than this!”

He glances over at Atsumu, who only shrugs.

“If you have a problem with how we’re building the desk,” Rin starts, hand threading through his hair. “You can drive over and help us yourself.”

“You-“ Aran cuts himself off before groaning. “The two of you are making out on Atsumu’s stream! Did you forget it was live ?”

Rin doesn’t wait for more than a beat before hanging up on Aran. His heart hammers against his chest, eyes shooting over to the phone still streaming with both of them on the screen. Never has he hated the invention of technology more than in this moment.

“What did—” Atsumu starts.

“The phone,” Rin cuts him off. “You’re still streaming.”

It takes one, two, three blinks from Atsumu before Rin watches the reality dawn on his face. His eyes go wide, mouth dropping just enough to realize exactly what’s happening. Slowly, his eyes move from Rins face to the phone, the flurry of messages on the screen is nothing but a gray blur on his screen.

The only sound for the moment is Rei Ami rapping in the background. Sweeter than a motherfucking snow cone.

“We’re dating,” Rin blurts before his mind can catch up to his mouth. “We’ve been dating for a while.”

He doesn’t know what makes him confess the truth to all of these random people they’ve never met or will meet. All Rin knows is that he wants them to know and wants them to know now, while they’re still streaming what was supposed to be good PR for the V. League. Somewhere, in the back of his mind he can feel the headache his agent is going through right now.

Dread sinks into his stomach like a sheet of ice.

It’s Atsumu who pulls Rin out of his thoughts once again. The hand resting against his hips gives a squeeze while the other engulfs the one clutching onto his phone. From the corner of his eyes, Rin can see him smiling like he won the lottery. It makes relief flood his system.

“Cat’s outta the bag,” Atsumu says, laughing like he told some brilliant joke and not like their lives have been exposed for the whole world. “Rin and I are dating. We never tried to hide it, but ya know.”

Warmth washes over Rin at the sentiment, the ice in his veins melting with each second he spends staring at Atsumu’s smile.

“Anyway, now that we got that outta the way it’s time to get back to the desk.”

Atsumu moves to pick up the forgotten pieces but Rin moves quicker, one finger pressing against the end button on the screen while the other wraps around Atsumu's waist to keep him where he is.

Rin ,” Atsumu gasps. “The stream.”

“I don’t care about that,” he replies, one hand pulling Atsumu up and off the floor. More screws and pegs scatter across the floor. “We just told the entirety of Japan that we’re dating and you expect us to build a desk?”

Atsumu opens his mouth a few times, attempting to come up with an answer. It’s cute, really, but Rin would rather deal with the reality of their situation — and the desk — tomorrow. Right now he needs to pull Atsumu down the hall and to his room for the rest of the night. He smirks when Atsumu trips over his own feet in a rush to stand up.

They’ll be fine, they always are.
