Chapter Text

In and out, simple, right? Well when you’re breaking into a Luthor’s office you can never know what to expect. Luckily, Lena seems to not be as paranoid as the rest of her family. All these thoughts are running through Alana’s head as she slips into her boss’s office while she’s in a board meeting.

Her task is simple, get into the youngest Luthor’s office, hide a camera, and catch her in the middle of something illegal. Alana’s brother, Luke, begged her to do this after finding out she got hired as Lena’s temporary assistant while Jess visited family. Luke’s best friend died in Metropolis after Lex’s war on Superman, and he knew aliens who had been kidnapped by Cadmus, so he refused to believe that the youngest Luthor wasn’t a criminal, just that she hasn’t been caught yet. So here Alana was, wireless camera in hand, looking for a place to hide it before Lena returned. Spotting the decorative plant next to the wall mounted TV screen, she set it up there, believing any activity would be at her desk or by her couch, and the plant allowed for coverage for both locations.

Slipping out of the office, Alana texted Luke, telling him everything was done on her end, before sitting down at her desk and getting on with her work. If Lena thought for even a second that something as wrong, the whole plan could be ruined.

Receiving his sister’s text, Luke accessed the camera. From now on, all they have to do is wait. He set the camera up previously to stream the footage to his server, where once she started acting shifty he could then livestream the footage.

Lena, meanwhile, had no idea what was going on, instead being subjected to blatant sexism and xenophobia as one particular board member kept insinuating that she is incompetent at her job and that profits were higher when Lex was the CEO.

“Mr Rogers, I understand that you would much rather be off screwing your mistress, but I would appreciate if you would actually look at L-Corp’s profits currently compared to when my brother was in charge before stating obvious lies, or would you rather your brother find out what his fiancé is actually doing when she heads off to yoga class?” Lena raised her eyebrow dangerously at the man in question, who was shocked into silence, exactly the result Lena was looking for.

“Now that we’ve all thoroughly wasted our time by repeating the exact same conversation as last meeting, I’m afraid I must leave.” Lena levelled a glare at a different board member as she continued, “I have another appointment with someone who doesn’t think that messing around on their phone during a meeting counts as paying attention.” Without waiting for a response, she strode out of the meeting room, took a short elevator ride, and headed into her office, sparing a glance at Alana on her way in. The woman looked nervous, but so did most of her new hires, so she ignored the strange reaction from the woman.

Luke snapped to attention as he saw the only Luthor without a criminal record enter the frame. She pulled a phone and a laptop out of her bag, before hanging it on a hook and making her way to the desk. The phone got placed beside her on the desk as she opened up her laptop and started typing away on it. Luke started to grow bored, not realising how many emails a CEO might have to answer in a day. He turned up the audio so he could hear if anything suspicious happened, before pulling out his phone and launching Candy Crush.

A few minutes later, a voice caught his attention and he realised Lena was on a phone call.

“That might draw too much attention. What about the balcony instead?” Damn, the camera’s angle didn’t show the balcony.

There was a pause as she listened to the person on the other end.

“I understand that, but no one’s supposed to know about this until it has been finished, and that screams secret project.” Secret project? It has to be something illegal, right?

She paused again, spinning around to face the balcony.

“I know, but we still need to test the kryptonite aspect before we can take it for a test run.” Kryptonite? Oh no, is she going after Supergirl?

A pause as the person spoke again, earning a short laugh from Lena.

“Really, a Stranger Things reference? Oh, that reminds me, we need to find time to finish season two, I want to know more about this Bob guy. I haven’t decided if I believe his sweet guy routine, sure it seems genuine, but thats what the writers want you to think. Either way, I do love his character.”

She fiddled with her pen, writing something down on a notepad as the other person talked again.

“If you think you can do it without drawing unwanted attention, then go for it, see you soon, darling.” Lena pulled the phone away from her ear, tapping it before setting it back down on the table. Darling? So does the Luthor have a secret boyfriend helping her hurt Supergirl?

So many questions swirl around Luke’s head, but he is sure of one thing, Lena Luthor is going after Supergirl. Theres no way she could be doing anything else. What uses are there for kryptonite other than hurting Kryptonians? He looked up to see Lena move towards the balcony.

“Still not an entrance, Supergirl. What brings you by?” Supergirl? He started the livestream, if National City’s superhero was there, she probably overheard the phone call Lena just had and came to confront her. He quickly left his computer, if anyone did see the footage, he didn’t want to get arrested for it.

“Oh, you know, just checking on the resident Luthor, making sure you’re still a law abiding citizen.” As she spoke, Supergirl entered the frame, looking every bit the regal superhero she’s known as.

The two held eye contact, Supergirl with her hands on her hips and Lena with her arms folded. After a tense moment, the two burst into laughter and Supergirl pulled a very willing Lena into a hug. As they pulled apart, Lena started talking.

“Ok, let’s get started.” She picked up a remote from her desk and walked closer to the camera with Supergirl following, looking at something out of frame. She pressed a button and the two women were softly illuminated by an unknown light source.

“So, this is what it currently looks like,” Lena gestured towards the light source, “I haven’t changed the main design of it since the last time you saw it, what I’ve been working on recently has instead been less visible changes, starting with these.” The light flickered and shifted.

“Oh, I actually printed out a users manual for those, it’s around here somewhere.” Lena ducked out of frame and the sound of objects and paper being moved around could be heard.

“Lee, this looks incredible!”

Lena’s muffled voice responded, “Wait until you see what they can do.” A beat. “Aha! I knew I left it here somewhere.” Lena appeared back in frame with a booklet in hand, before handing it to Supergirl. “Here you go.”

The pages became a blur as Supergirl sped through it. “Wow, you’ve really outdone yourself, are you sure I can’t start using it now?”

“I still need to add the final touches to make it kryptonite-proof.” Supergirl looks at her, “No, we’ve had this conversation before, I know you think it would be faster, but I’m not exposing you to kryptonite until I’m certain it won’t be able to affect you. Speaking of which, that’s the reason behind these two major visual changes,” The light source flickered again, “Both are retractable, and their default form is retracted, but will automatically activate if kryptonite is detected. You can activate them manually, and override their activation whenever you want.”

“Ok, I think I’ll only use them in emergencies, I much prefer it without them activated.”

“I have to get back to work, my inbox is overflowing with emails, but feel free to keep looking.” Lena handed Supergirl the remote, before returning to the desk.

The video stream continued like that for a few minutes, the noise of Lena typing and the occasional flicker of light on Supergirl being the only noticeable changes, before a buzzing was heard. Supergirl pulled a phone out of her boot and seemed to open something on it. She looked confused for a second, before turning to look straight at the camera.

“Lena, other than you and me, who has been in your office recently?” Lena looked up from her computer to Supergirl.

“No one as far as I know. The only time I’ve left since this morning was for a meeting, and that was only downstairs. Why do you ask?”

“Call security, ask them to check the camera outside to see who came in.”

Lena started to use the intercom, but Supergirl interrupted her.

“Call security directly yourself, she could be in on it.”

“You’re scaring me, what’s going on?”

“Someone planted a camera in your office.”

Supergirl reached towards the camera, and the feed went dead.
