Work Text:

Castiel had just gotten off from his job and was more than excited to see his two favorite people. Of course, all the excitement went out the window (flew into the neighbor’s blender, and got blended into a terrible smoothie) as he stepped through the front door, seeing glitter on, well,,, everything. Bent over in the middle of a sparkly living room, mumbling what Cas thought to be prayers for his existence, Castiel found Sam. The plaid-wearing, cowboy-hat-wearing Moose stood up straighter when he noticed Castiel and stopped mumbling, giving him an awkward smile and wave. Slowly, he took off his hat, cursing softly when glitter fell out of it and onto him. Another look to Cas. His eyes pleaded for life.

“Cas—“ Sam started, stepping forward to meet him.

“Sam, why is everything... glitterfied?” Castiel asked, reaching up to shake the glitter out of Sam’s hair, looking at his arm distastefully as the multicolored, shiny specks covered it.

Sam stared at him with wide eyes, clearing his throat as he pulled his hair back. “Yes.. that is the question, why.” He paused at the look Cas gave him. “Well, it’s—uh—it’s kinda a long story.”

Sam sat on the couch, a book in his left hand, a mug of coffee in his right. Since Jack had entered their life, of the two of them, Sam was deemed the “stay-at-home dad”, and spent his days taking care of/entertaining Jack.

Speaking of Jack, Sam paused as he heard running footsteps, quickly putting down his mug and book onto the coffee table. The six year old ran into the living room, hopping onto the couch beside him.

Sam smiled, turning to his son, ruffling his hair. “Hey, Jackie!”

Jack beamed, a tiny laugh escaping him as he waved his signature wave. “Hello!”

Sam picked him up and placed him on his lap, bouncing his leg ever so slightly. “So, since you’re up, what do ya wanna do after breakfast?”

Jack hummed in though, swinging his legs ever so slightly. “Dress up? And I wanna do something for Cas! Like— like a picture!”

His dad nodded. “Alright, yeah! We can do that. What do you want to eat?”

“Pancakes!”

After breakfast, Sam sat in Jack’s room with him, bouncing his leg as he watched Jack dig through a chest filled with costumes. He was about to ask him if he needed help, when Jack pulled out a bag and two cowboy hats.

“Cowboys?” He asked, a small smile on his face.

Jack nodded, handing Sam the biggest of the hats, opening the bag. “Can you help me put this on?”

Sam put on his hat and kneeled down in front of Jack. “Yeah, kiddo, I’ll help you.”

He helped Jack button up the plaid shirt, put on the sherif star and the vest, and the boots with the spurs.

“Now, what kinda picture are we making Cas?”

Jack paused, looking up from where he was fixing the star. He went to his closet and peered around, before pointing up to a top rack. With Sam’s help, the box was set on the bed. When it was opened, Sam made a face, before looking to Jack.

Glitter?

——————————————————————————

Cas looked at Sam expectantly as they sat at the counter. Sam glanced to him and let out a nervous laugh.

“And then—uh—well, I can’t remember it’s all kinda a big blur after that. Jack is in the bath, I’m about to go help him try to get the glitter out of his hair. Um... I’ll start cleaning this up later?”

Cas looked around, before trying to wipe more glitter off of Sam. “I could clean it up with my—“

“No, no, Cas, you don’t—“ He looked to him. “You don’t need to. You’re low enough, what if it..”

“Sam, it won’t run out, there’s just not as much as there used to be.”

Sam fell silent, before letting out a heavy sigh. “If you.. if you say so.”

Cas snapped, and most of the house was rid of the sparkly sheet that had lain over it. “I’ll go check with Jack, you go take a shower in the other bathroom.”

Sam nodded slightly, squeezing Cas’ shoulder, before practically running to the shower.

Cas went to the kid’s bathroom, knocking on the door, before stepping in.

Jack looked up from where he was playing with bubbles, smiling. “Cas! Did Sam give you the picture?”

Cas raised a brow. “Oh, the picture.. no, he didn’t, but you can once we’re done in here.”

Jack, newly unglittered, carefully handled the glitter mess that was a poster board. “Look! It’s us, and Sam, and Dean!” He held it up.

Cas carefully took it, a soft smile on his face. He set it down, before scooping Jack up into his arms. “I love it, kiddo.”

Once dinner was done and both Sam and Jack were in bed, Cas sat on the couch, phone up to his ear, telling Dean what he’d missed.

“Be careful when hugging them both, I swear I’m going to see glitter coming off of them for the next week and a half.” He said, a lighthearted tone to his voice.

Though he hated that sparkly substance... he loved his family.
