Happy to Help

Summary:

Marianne finds herself more comfortable around Dimitri than most people. To make herself feel as comfortable as possible, she asks Byleth if she can join the Blue Lions to be closer to Dimitri.

Work Text:

Marianne was finishing up a prayer in the church when she turned around to see a familiar face among the people sitting on the pews. “T-Thank you for helping us out in the last battle.” She said as she sat beside the blond man resting on the church pew.

“No need to thank me, I will always help my allies. I will always be there to help you, Marianne, but I have told you before you are a lucky charm, I’m sure you will always stay alive and well.” The man replied.

“But I’m not even a member of the Blue Lions, so why do you risk your life for my safety?”

“As long as our views are not crossed, then I will protect anyone that will fight alongside me- but I must admit, since we are so similar, I find myself drawn to protecting you more than other…” Dimitri trailed off for a moment, “But it might just be your good luck charm drawing me in to protect you. Ha.” Dimitri finished with a laugh.

“B-but, if you spend too much time protecting me, it will only put your classmates and allies at risk… and then like always… I-I’m bringing harm to others… but, to be honest, I do enjoy spending time with you.” Marianne finished as the corners of her mouth turned into a smile.

“There will always be people I can’t protect, but I will always try my best to protect the people that mean the most to me- by that I mean that I also enjoy spending time with you. Also, is that a smile I see?”

“W-What?” Marianne stuttered in surprise, had she really been smiling? Had she let herself be comfortable enough to show her emotions? Maybe being around Dimitri was a good thing for her, if only she could spend more time with Dimitri.

“Don’t get embarrassed, I enjoy seeing your smile. Plus, who knows how many people have actually got to witness the miracle that is your smile.” Dimitri teased.

“Well… m-maybe sometime… I will get to see your smile…”

“Ha. That would be a sight to see.” Dimitri scoffed at the idea.

“Maybe my… good luck… will bring it out of you.” Marianne chuckled, one at the idea that she actually admitted that maybe she was good luck, and two at the idea of seeing Dimitri freely smile.

“Maybe if you are lucky you will get to see me smile. Either way, I enjoyed talking with you, but I’m afraid I have to leave for class. If you need me, you always know where to find me.” Dimitri said, leaving the cathedral to head off to class. Marianne stayed behind for one last prayer before she decided it was best to make her way back to the Golden Deer classroom.

After classes, Marianne had caught Byleth working on paperwork alone in the Blue Lion classroom, she thought this was a better time than ever to ask a question that had recently been lingering on her mind. She quietly approached Byleth, who looked up from her paperwork to acknowledge her presence. “Pro-Professor I was… wondering if I could speak with you?” Marianne asked as she twirled her hands nervously behind her back.

“Of course. What can I do for you, Marianne?” Byleth responded, setting down the papers she had been working on.

“Um, I-I have a request. It’s about your class… I, um… Have become friends with other people in your class… And um, I was wondering if, maybe, I could join your class? I think I would feel more… comfortable around your class.”

“Are you sure you will be more comfortable? You seem to be having trouble even speaking to me, and if you joined the class, well, you will have to learn to speak with me, but of course, you can join if it would make you more comfortable.”

“Huh? Oh! Thank you! I-I should be more comfortable speaking after I get to know you better… Professor.” Marianne stuttered out, Before quickly leaving and making her way back to her room to prepare for her first day of class with the Blue Lions tomorrow.

The next day, Marianne was standing silently at the back of the classroom. it was her first day as a member of the Blue Lions and she was filled with nerves. What would the other member of the class think about her? Would they see her as an asset to the class or would they see her as a hindrance? Marianne’s train of thought was quickly broken as Byleth began to speak at the front of the classroom.

“I would like everyone to welcome our new student to the Blue Lion House, she has recently transferred from the Golden Deer House to feel more comfortable with her classmates. I ask that you all make her feel at home.” Byleth said, motioning to the back of the room for Marianne to join her at the front of the class.

Marianne slowly made her way towards the front of the classroom and could feel the eyes of the Blue Lion students peering through her. Many of the students she had barely spoken with, so they wondered why she had chosen to join their class, but she knew the reason why. Dimitri. He made her feel safe, she could talk with him more freely, they shared a past filled with survivor's guilt.

“Th-Thank you for allowing me to join your class.” Marianne announced with a small bow as she reached the front of the classroom. Following her announcement, she quickly scanned the room to find an empty seat, and a smile began to grow on her face as she saw Dimitri quietly patting the empty seat beside him. “Thank you.” She whispered taking the seat beside him.

“Always happy to help.” Dimitri responded, allowing the smallest smile to peak from the corner of his mouth. Happy to have a new friend in class.
