Chapter Text
The best mistake of both Sirius Black and Lily Potter's lives was when they slept together. It all started with a misunderstanding; James believes that Lily was more than friendly with Severus Snape. The argument ended with an unofficial breakup. Sirius and James had a fight a couple days before when James kept badmouthing Sirius's younger brother Regulus for being in Slytherin. She found Sirius and after a bottle of fire whiskey both thought of it as revenge on James everything else but the two of them was forgotten. The alcohol influenced them, because if they were sober they would have thought of another way to get back at James. They both regretted their actions but not Aries who was the product of their one night stand. Due to this James and Sirius's friendship didn't last.
Sirius moved back in with his parents and though he didn't agree with their views on blood purity learned to tolerate their views. He apologized to his brother for ignoring his existence and even to Snape. He wasn't friends with Snape afterwards, however they managed to stay civil. Aries Sirius Black was was born May 28 1978. Sirius kept the Black tradition of naming their children after stars and constellations. Remus was the godfather and surprisingly Narcissa was chosen as Aries' godmother; since Sirius moved back in with his parents he spent a lot more time with his cousins including Andromeda who was still welcomed in the Black ancestral home. Andromeda's marriage to Ted did anger the family however after seeing that Ted was impressive with his magic, they believed he proved himself worthy of Andromeda and reinstated her back into the family. Lily loved Aries but when she heard the prophecy and went into hiding with James and their son Charles she barely saw him. They family believed they were better than muggle-borns but also did not think they should be killed. The understood that the wizarding world needed new blood or they would die out. The purebloods were still wary of the muggleborns due to the muggle witch hunts, but believed that they like Ted Tonks did could prove that they would not expose them to the muggle world and were very capable and impressive with magic.
Lily loved Aries but when she heard the prophecy and went into hiding with James and their son Charles she barely saw him. Before they went into hiding though Sirius got married to Elizabeth Rowle who was in Slytherin and two years younger which surprised his friends but were happy for him. He then had Perseus Orion Black. Lily attended and Remus was the best man but James refused to attend the wedding. Lily tried to be consistent in Aries' life but it all changed when the Dark Lord arrived to Godric's Hallow on Halloween 1981.
Chapter 2
Summary:
Get to know the family and what they have planned for the day. A long chapter to introduce Sirius's and Aries's family.
Notes:
The next chapter will be in Lily's perspective and perhaps Charles. Diagon Alley will happen in the next chapter as well. Thank you for reading as always constructive criticism and reviews are welcomed. If you have any thought or opinions on what I should add let me know. Hope you enjoy. I do not own Harry Potter I am just writing this for fun and am not making any profit from it. J.K. Rowling owns it not me.
Chapter Text
Aries sometimes wondered what life would be like if his parents were together. Don't get him wrong he loves his stepmom and little brother Perseus or Percy for short, but he wonders what it's like to always have your mom. For her to be there for you when you have a nightmare or being able to spend every Christmas or birthday with her.
If he was being honest Elizabeth was more of a mother to him than Lily was, which was why he sometimes called her mum but Lily was mother. Aries didn't hate Lily, he loved her but their relationship isn't what a mother/ son relationship should be. He was pulled out of his thoughts when his dad called for breakfast.
Aries went downstairs to where the dining room was. They lived in an old Black Estate, it was about as big as Malfoy Manor. Since Sirius was on better terms with his parents now they allowed him to stay there. "Morning pup", said Sirius.
"Morning Dad, mum, Percy", Aries greeted them. Everyone was home since his dad was no longer an auror and Elizabeth was a stay at home mom but occasionally volunteered at St. Mungos with Narcissa.
Perseus couldn't contain his excitement as he shouted " My Hogwarts letter came!".
Aries chuckled as his father gave him his Hogwarts letter as well. Aries along with Corvus Lucius Malfoy had been attending Durmstrang but due to their younger brother's eagerness to go to Hogwarts then ended up transferring to Hogwarts for their 3rd year much to their mother's relief. They always complained about how Durmstrang was too far.
Aries was a bit disappointed that he had to leave Durmstrang because he loved how they offered more classes and still practiced the dark arts. It's understandable considering who he was raised by. Orion and Walburga Black stuck very closely to tradition and dark arts so they pushed for Aries to be taught as well. Seeing as how he was the heir to the House of Black they believed it was only right that he at least learn of their ways even if he didn't become a dark wizard. It took some explaining to Sirius that dark didn't mean evil.
Magic was all about intent, however there were some dark witches and wizards who did take precautions and were driven mad by the dark magic and further painted a horrible picture of the dark arts. Aries did in fact plan to declare for the dark in his third year which is another reason he does not wish to attend Hogwarts because any rituals one would have to be secret.
As if his stepmom read his mind Elizabeth tried to reassure him, "It won't be so bad Aries, after all I still managed to use the dark arts and declare while at Hogwarts. Sirius barked a laugh
"Ah yes I always knew the Slytherins were just as evil as I believed performing rituals." Sirius, although he did not want to become a dark wizard, has a dark affinity and took the time to understand that Slytherins weren't so bad why so many of them ended up joining the dark lord. Sirius also learned about the Dark Lord's true intentions and was surprised. The Dark Lord did not wish to eradicate all muggle-borns at least not at first.
The goal he had in mind was to introduce muggle-borns to the magical world sooner and perhaps even raise them there. This met a lot of opposition from Dumbledore and his supporters. Tom however wanted to see this happen so he took steps to ensure it.
This led him to create the abominations known as horcruxes. Due to his soul splitting multiple times he lost his sanity and believed that only pure-bloods and half-bloods should have magic. This was perfect for Dumbledore to have the wizarding world turn against him. His followers could do nothing as he tortured them for any mistake they made. They saw the man they respected and looked up to become nothing more than a psychotic murderer.
Hearing this Sirius pulled the House of Black from the light and became neutral. He still had friends who sided with the light and didn't want to lose them. Also if the Dark Lord did return as many of his followers believed Sirius had to see if he would still have the same mentality he had right before he was defeated.
Perseus, not noticing that everyone was in deep thought, spoke up,"I want to be in Slytherin!".
Sirius turned and looked at his youngest son in horror, "How could you he exclaimed" as he then turned towards his wife and playfully hissed "You turned him against me!"
The family laughed at Sirius's antics when Percy spoke up again and asked Aries"What house do you wanna be in?"
"Whichever one you're in little brother because I have to protect you." Perseus beamed at hearing that.
"Well let's hurry, we have to meet the Potter at Diagon Alley in an hour.", said Sirius.
Though James and Sirius weren't friends anymore they still saw each other occasionally due to Lily. She suggested that they go together since all of their sons were going to Hogwarts and Sirius, not wanting to be rude accepted. Elizabeth was a bit hesitant, not because Lily was a muggle-born because she wasn't. It came as a shock when she and James went to Gringotts to see if either one of them had any inheritance they didn't know about.
Lily was not going to do it because she didn't think there would be anything but James insisted and they were shocked. It seems that Lily was the heiress of the House of Evans. Although not a part of the Sacred Twenty-eight the House of Evan was well known amongst purebloods and was believed to have died out. It appears Lily's parents were the children of squibs and the magic they did not have manifested in Lily. No, Elizabeth had a problem with Lily due to her lack of presence in Aries's life. She knew that Aries loved her and wished she was around more and Elizabeth did all she could to be a mother figure in his life. However she knew it wouldn't be the same as his birth mother being there for him.
Just as they were about to leave a black eagle owl appeared with a letter for Aries. It was Corvus inviting him to go to Diagon Alley with his family. Seeing as how they were going as well Aries decided that he would just surprise his cousin/best friend. Knowing that the Potters and Malfoys didn't get along he hoped that they could be civil today and that today would go well, if not for him then for Percy.
Chapter 3: Chapter 3
Summary:
Meet the Potters and include their trip to Diagon Alley with the Blacks and Malfoys.
Notes:
I feel likes it's a bit rushed but let me know what you think and if I should change the dialogue because I feel I didn't do a good jobs with it. Constructive criticism and reviews are welcomed. Again I don't own Harry Potter J.K Rowling does.
Chapter Text
Lilly Potter was happy with her life. She had a wonderful husband and two beautiful children. She wished she could be with Aries as much as she was with Charles, however she could never leave him for too long in fear of the prophecy that was spoken by Sybil Trelawney many years ago. Yes she missed some birthdays and didn't always spend Christmas but Aries understood, she was sure of it. She was also glad that Aries would be going to Hogwarts this year, and hoped that he would take care of Charles while he was there. She was horrified when she found out that he was sent to Durmstrang and actually enjoyed it. When he came back she saw that he was still the same and her worry lessened, however she was much happier that he would no longer practice the dark arts, or so she thought. As the family finished breakfast Charles was talking with James about quidditch and being in Gryffindor. She hoped both her sons would be in Gryffindor and that their relationship will get better. Charles loves Aries but Aries always pushes him away. At first she thought that it was the age difference even though it's only two years but after seeing him play with Perseus she wasn't so sure.
She thought it had to do with all the attention Charles got from her but tried to give him the same amount but he always pushed Charles away. Charles always tried to spend time with Aries no matter how much he pushed him away. Charles saw the relationship that Ron had with his siblings and wished to have that. He had to admit he was a bit jealous of Perseus because Aries always spent time with him, playing quidditch or chess, never doing that with him. Charles was spoiled and a bit arrogant but did not think he was better than everybody. He enjoyed the fame but sometimes wished he could just be himself and go places without people gushing over him. He was happy to be going to Diagon Alley with Aries and hoped he could convince his dad to buy him a Nimbus 2000. They made their way to the floo and went to Diagon Alley.
Aries P.O.V
We were waiting for my mother and the Malfoys at the Leaky Cauldron when I saw Corvus. "Hey", I said "how's my favorite human looking peacock?"
"Hey lay off those are father's not mine" Corvus responded.
He saw his cousin Draco, aunt Narcissa and uncle Lucius. "Hello Aries dear, I trust you are well?" asked Narcissa.
"Yes aunt Cissa I'm doing well thank you for asking." responded Aries with the manners and proper etiquette I was taught from a young age.
As my aunt and uncle finished with greeting my parents finished greeting each other Aries then saw I unmistakeable red hair of my mother, along with her husband and Charles. I was disappointed that James came due to the fact that the both of them did not get along. I saw his mothers face light up when she saw me which made me happy because I wasn't used to being the reason she lit up like that, it was usually Charles.
However her smile grew smaller when she saw the Malfoys but did her best to be civil with them for Aries's sake.
"Hello mother", I said as she walked up to me.
"Hello Aries, are you ok? I missed you." she responded as she looked at me fondly.
"I've been well" I responded quickly and tried not to roll my eyes as I saw Charles beginning to walk towards me.
His eyes were wide with excitement. "Hey Aries I got my Hogwarts letter today!" He all but shouted which got the attention of many patrons in the room. "Mr. Potter an honor to meet you" "Can I get your autograph?" "How'd you defeat You-Know-Who?" were some of the many questions I heard before we quickly entered the alley.
Sirius, trying to break the tension between the Potters and Malfoy, quickly said, "Well we should get your robes now shouldn't we."
While the Potters went to Madam Malkin's Robes for all Occasions the we along with the Malfoys went to Angelo's Tailored Robes. Dad didn't really care where we got the robes from as long as they were good quality but mum and aunt Narcissa were always picky. After spending a small fortune on clothes for their children we made our way to Flourish and Blotts to get the children's books.
Corvus spoke up on the way asking, "What do you think about going to Hogwarts?"
I sighed and responded, "I'm bummed about not being able to practice the dark arts openly at least I'll get to be close to Percy and still plan on declaring dark. What about you?"
Corvus's response was about the same as mine. "I'm bummed about those things too but I'm glad since I get to see where mother and father learned and being in Slytherin with you."
I laughed and looked at him semi seriously, "What if I get sorted into the house of lions?"
The adults heard this and chuckled, his father spoke first, "Aries as much as I would love for you be in Gryffindor you've spent to much time my parents, Lizzie (Elizabeth), and your aunts and uncles to be in Gryffindor. You're as Slytherin as they come.
" "He's right Aries." said my uncle Lucius, "and I don't say that just because I don't wish to lose 40 galleons to Bellatrix."
I looked at him with betrayal, "You and aunt Bella have a bet on which house I'll be in? I'm a human being not an object,” I said, making myself cry."
Dad looked at me and said, "You've proved my point son."
After getting our books we along with my mother and her family went to The Magical Menagerie to get Perseus and Draco a pet as they already got their owls. Draco got a kneazle while Perseus got a magical Eastern Yellow-bellied Racer and gave me a knowing look. Nobody except for our family knew I could speak parseltounge because my grandparents believed she would tell Dumbledore; which would in turn make him have an interest and try to manipulate me. Mother asked if she could spend some time with me alone which surprised me since we've never gone through the alley alone when we came with others before.
We went to Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour. "So are you excited to go to Hogwarts?" she asked me.
I just shrugged, "Kind of though I am going to miss my friends at Durmstrang and the different classes they teach as well."
She understood that I was talking about the dark arts as it wasn't hidden from her that had an interest in them but she didn't know I actually took the classes that taught us different types of dark arts like blood magic, necromancy, and for the upper years who had enough control black magic.
"Well Hogwarts is great sweetie, they also have Defense Against the Dark Arts which I'm sure you'll enjoy." she said. I didn't bother to respond and just nodded my head.
"Also I wanted to ask you something, can you look out for Charles while you're both at Hogwarts?"
I stopped myself from sighing and hid my disappointment. I tried to ignore the jealousy and bitterness towards Charles and the anger towards my mother as well. I thought it was finally just the two of us but she never forgets about Charles.
"I'll do my best." Is all I say. After we finish Charles and Draco are disappointed because they didn't get a Nimbus 2000.
When we got home mum (I subconsciously call Elizabeth that now) looked at me with a worried face.
"She wanted to talk about Charles didn't she?" she asked. I just nodded quietly.
She put her arms around me and spoke again. "I'm sure she loves you."
"You don't treat me the same way she does. You don't push me aside for Percy. You were there every-time I had a nightmare. for every birthday and Christmas." I say.
"I love you like my own blood Aries, you are my son. Lily does love you because there's know way a mother can't love her child, however she hasn't been the best mother I can see." Elizabeth says quietly.
I can't help the tears from falling as I cry in her arms, "I wish you were my real mum. I mean you're more of a mum to me than she is." I cry.
Elizabeth's anger towards Lily grew. Lily wasn't a bad person far from it, but she was absent in Aries's life way too much. She hoped they could fix their relationship, but a selfish part of wish hoped they didn't because she was afraid of losing Aries if his and Lily's relationship became the way a mother and son's should be.
“Is it okay if I refer to you as my mum,” I asked as I started to fall asleep.
“Of course, son.” replied Elizabeth waning more than anything to see Aries happy and smile. She left Aries who fell asleep on his bed but tucked him like she used too when he was younger. With a sad smile she turned off the light and left his room.

Chapter Text
Chapter 4
A month has passed since the day at Diagon Alley and the Black family found themselves in front of the scarlet Hogwarts Express. Perseus couldn’t believe that muggles invented them and even found ways to make them better and faster. Aries was not surprised because he’s been studying muggles for some years now. He was fascinated by how they lived without magic and the things they invented. Sure some things were invented by muggle-borns but it was still fascinating. He wasn’t an enthusiast like Arthur Weasley and kept his muggle studies to himself. He was surprised to find out about their weapons most of all. He knew that if war came between wizards and muggles the muggles would win because of their advanced technology and superior numbers.
The train whistle blew which meant there were 5 minutes to board the train. Aries was in no rush because he knew that Corvus saved a compartment for them. Elizabeth and Sirius, while emotional, were trying to hide it. Elizabeth due to her pureblood upbringing and Sirius because well he just didn’t want to cry in public. It was hard for both of them because seeing Aries leave was hard enough but now both boys were leaving. They were grateful for the peace and quiet they would have though. “Don’t forget to pull some pranks boys, and remember to look out for the Marauder’s Map. I know I gave you guys a new one your uncle Moony helped make but it’d be nice to have the original again.”
Elizabeth laughed and said,” Sirius don’t encourage their bad behavior. Remember boys I don’t care what house you get.” After their goodbyes, both boys made their way toward the train.
Aries didn't see his mother anywhere and was upset that she didn’t see him off. Suddenly someone put their hand on his shoulder and he quickly turned around and found himself face to face with Lily.
“I was looking for you, but then I saw Sirius and he told you’d gone to board the train,” Lily spoke between breaths.
Aries was shocked but quickly broke out of it, “I didn’t think you would come to see me.”
Lily looked at him with questioning eyes, “Why wouldn’t I?” She asked.
“I thought you’d stay with Charles till the last minute.”
Lily sighed and said, “I know I spend a lot of time with your brother but I’m going to try harder to spend with you too. Just the two of, because I love you as much as Charles and I’m sorry if you ever thought differently.”
Aries looked at her with no emotion and just said, “Goodbye mother, I’ll write soon.”
Aries P.O.V
I couldn’t believe her, I wanted to more than anything but this isn’t the first time she’s said something like this. It was always the same empty promise. I finally found Corvus after 5 minutes of searching. He wasn’t alone, Their cousins Rigel Lestrange, Michael Yaxley, and Zoe McNair were with him. “Hello chaps and lady,” I said as I sat next to Corvus.
I was well acquainted with each of them. Growing up and spending time with my grandparents meant I met a lot of their friends and associates along with their children. Rigel was quiet which led to people making the mistake of underestimating him, but his last name was enough to keep people away.
You see Aunt Bella and Uncle Rodolphus including his brother were sent to Azkaban, But grandfather Orion was able to secure their release after a few months. Even though we went to different schools we kept in touch and this small friend group.
“About the time you joined us, I thought you got left behind,” Corvus said. Not wanting to bring up what happened with my mother I managed to avoid it by asking where our brothers were.
“Don’t know. Mum said to look out for them but I think they’ll be fine during the train ride,” replied Corvus. “What about your sister Rigel?”
“She’s probably with your brothers,” Rigel responded.
As we were talking about halfway through the ride a bushy-haired girl barged into the compartment. I was surprised, to say the least. It seems this person lacks the manners to knock. “Have any of you seen a toad? A boy named Neville lost his,” she said.
Rigel spoke of first, “Well I think it’d be better if you introduce yourself before we answer any questions seeing as how you barged in here.”
The girl looked taken back at the comment and seemed to realize he was right. “I’m sorry my name is Hermione Granger, now have you seen a toad?” she asked again.
“Granger I don’t recognize that name,” said Elijah and the others realized what he meant. Although Aries could somewhat tolerate muggle-borns he did not care for them until they proved themselves. He very rarely uses the slur mudblood due to hearing so much around his relatives but his friends did not have the same restraint he did. “You’re a mudblood!” spat Michael. The girl Hermione didn’t know what the word meant but knew it wasn’t a compliment. Trying to avoid causing a scene I quickly said “Nope no toad here” and closed the door on her quickly with a locking charm.
“Can you believe the nerve of her?” Elijah said now in a bad mood due to encountering a muggle-born. Many purebloods did not outright insult muggle-borns as Michael did because they tried to be more open-minded, but still held their dislike of them due to their lack of trust which was passed onto their children. They understand we need them but would never allow them to marry into their family lines in order to keep them pure unless they show extraordinary prowess in magic. After all, they knew that the Dark Lord was a half-blood but the power he yielded was astronomical.
I sighed as I thought of what would make him feel better so he’d stop when, to my luck the trolley came around. After many chocolate frog cards being traded and exploding snap games, we finally arrived at Hogsmead. Corvus and I followed the others as we didn’t know where we were going when a huge man with a beard who I recognized to be Hagrid from my father’s stories stopped us.
“Scuse me, boys, Dumbledore asked me ter take ya lads on the boats so ya have the same experience seeing the school.”
I was kind of bothered having to go with the first years. Charles caught sight of and waved me over to his boat with a redhead who I recognized as Ron Weasley. I ignored him in search of Percy. Corvus and I found him with Draco and crossed the lake with them.
I may not be Dumbledore’s biggest fan but the sight of the castle was amazing. Durmstarng was nice too but didn’t look as nice as Hogwarts. We entered a hallway and were met with a stern-looking Professor McGonagall having met her before.
“Here are the first years’ professor, plus Black and Malfoy,” said the gamekeeper.
“Thank you Hagrid,” she said as she turned her attention towards us. “Welcome to Hogwarts, the sorting ceremony where you are sorted into your houses will begin momentarily. There are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Points are awarded for good behavior and participation but they can also be taken away. The house cup is awarded at the end of the year to the house with the most points. Your house will be like your family. Please wait patiently vehicle I check if they are ready.” I
heard Charle’s talking with Ron who said, “I heard you had to fight a troll,” I simply smirked alongside Corvus but Draco and Perseus could not help themselves from taunting Weasley due to an old blood feud between the Weasley’s and Malfoys. Due to Percy and Draco’s close relationship Percy couldn’t help but join Draco as well since they were family.
“How stupid do you have to be to believe something like that?” Draco said with a chuckle.
Ron snapped his head and said, “At least my dad isn’t a death eater.”
Percy cut in and said “Now Weasle you shouldn’t talk badly about your betters. At least get some new robes. How long have those been in the family, 3 generations?”
Charles looked at Aries pleadingly to stop his younger brother but Aries just kept listening to his brother and cousin insult Weasley until Charles spoke up.
“At least Ron’s dad never betrayed his best friend,” and when he realized what he said he looked at Aries horrified. He knew what happened between their fathers but the topic was always avoided. In fact, the truth that Lily was Aries’ mother was unknown to most, which was ok with Aries as he didn’t want to be linked to Charles. Aries ignored and grabbed Percy and Draco away saying “Don’t waste your time with them.”
Professor McGonagall arrived a moment later, “We’re ready for you now.” As they entered the great hall the first years could help but whisper about the ceiling and how big the room was.
Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.
So put me on!
Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!
Sang the hat. McGonagall went to the front and said, “When your name is called you will come forward and have the sorting hat placed on your head.
Abbot, Hannah was the first name she called and soon after was Perseus. It was three seconds before the hat shouted “Slytherin!”
When it was Draco’s turn the hat didn’t even touch his head as it also placed him in the house of snakes. Charles Potter and Ronald Weasley to know one’s surprise were sorted into Gryffindor. As the last first-year Blaise Zabini was sorted into Slytherin the headmaster addressed the two third-years who were yet to be sorted.
“As you may have noticed we have two new students who have transferred her from Durmstrang for their third year. Messrs Aries Black and Corvus Malfoy.
Aries went first and felt the hat get into his mind, “Hm I’m surprised you didn’t resist. I know what you do, my father told me. Well, you would do great in Slytherin even though both of your parents were Gryffindor, but then again your whole life you’ve with Slytherins so it makes sense. You are loyal but wouldn’t go out of your way to help others so Hufflepuff is out. You like learning but you benefit from it so not Ravenclaw. And you shiver at the thought of being a Gryffindor.” mused the hat. “Well, it seems you know where I belong so hurry it up,” I snapped my patience with the hat-wearing thin. “Very well, better be Slytherin!” shouted the hat.
Perseus greeted me with a huge smile as I sat with my friends. Corvus was quickly sorted into Slytherin as well. The headmaster spoke about the corridor on the third floor is forbidden if you didn’t want to die painful and spouted-out rubbish and the food appeared. So far things are going well though.

Chapter Text
Aries P.O.V
When the feast ended we followed the prefects down to the dungeons. The prefects were Gemma Farley and Marcus Flint. We arrived at the entrance when Gemma turned around and said, “The password is only for Slytherins, give it to anyone else and there will be severe consequences. The password is ‘sanguinis pura’.
”We entered and listened to Severus welcome the first years to Slytherin and introduced them to the rules about house unity. Pretty tired from the train ride I went to the room I shared with Corvus.
Unlike the other houses where the students in the same year share a dorm in Slytherin you only shared with one person due to the generosity of former alumni, Lucius Malfoy being one of them. The showers, common room, and dorms were a lot better than the other houses, not that they knew. After sending an owl to my father and mum which house Perseus and I went to bed.
In the morning, which was earlier than most people got up because of my father and grandfather’s rigorous quidditch training they put me through, I got ready for breakfast. The reason they train me is not just because they love seeing me suffer through their difficult drills but because my grandfather believes I have in me to be one of the greatest seekers ever and boasts that I got it from him as he was the Slytherin seeker in his time. My grandfather made sure that I knew to keep training even though he wouldn’t be there to look over my shoulder.
Honestly it was nice to have a routine and you got used to it. The sun was just rising as I made my way to the common room. I thought about saying good morning to uncle Sev who was also an early riser but was sure he was brewing potions and didn’t want to bother him. After several laps around the quidditch pitch, several push-ups and much more, including tricks on my broom which my mum would kill me for if she saw me I made my way back to my room to where I was noticed by Corvus.
“I don’t know how you do it,” he said as he saw me enter the room.
“Just cause we’re at Hogwarts doesn’t mean I’m going to start slacking off,” I said to which Corvus responded,
“It’s not like you have to, there’s no real competition here at Hogwarts except maybe Diggory but he’s nowhere near Victor’s (Krum) level where as you are” Corvus said.
I just laughed as I went to shower. When I made my way to the common room the rest of the group was waiting. “Merlin, I thought we’d never get breakfast.” teased Zoe.
"Yes, well some of us have reputations to uphold," I answered back. The friendly banter went on until we reached the Great Hall. Perseus wasn't up and neither was Draco but it didn't surprise me as both of them loved their beauty sleep. We quietly ate breakfast unlike the Gryffindors who have no decorum who were loud and obnoxious. I saw Weasley stuffing his mouth as usual. I swear he was just inhaling the food and not chewing. I looked away and saw Severus coming towards us with our schedules. He passed them out and stopped at me, “I trust you will behave this school year,” he said in a serious tone.
“Come Uncle Sev,” I called him quietly, “I’m a perfect example of a star student.”
He snorted quietly and said, “It’s as if you think I don’t know who your father and godfather are.”
“I’ll do my best to stay out of trouble but if it finds me just know it wasn’t my fault.” He just shook his head and headed by toward the head table. The morning mail began to arrive when I received two letters, one from dad and mum (Elizabeth) and the other one from mother (Lily). I was surprised to get one from my mother but then realised that Charles must have written to her and told her about my placement in Slytherin which would then lead her to writing a letter congratulating me on my placement.
I know she wishes I was in Gryffindor with Charles but was grateful that she didn’t have anything against me being in Slytherin despite what James would say. Dad and mum on the other hand were happy as long as I was happy and told me to watch after my brothers and cousins. Mum also sent a gift basket filled with a bunch of sweets which were stolen by my cousins Rigel and Regulus first before everybody else got what they wanted. “A bunch of vultures, the lot of you,” I said.
“Great we have Transfiguration with the Gryffindorks,” groaned Corvus. Booking at our schedule I noticed he was right.
“Well look at the bright side, we also have double potions with them,” I said.
He looked at me confused, “I thought you said there was a brightside?” he asked.
“There is, we’ll get to see how many points Sev takes away from them.” I smirked.
The lesson with McGonagall went well and we had to turn an inanimate object into a living thing. It took a couple of tries but I managed to get it done along with most of our group, thanks to private tutoring. The Weasley twins made the class amusing with their antics which I’m sure exasperated McGonagall to no end. We were passing the charms corridor when we ran into Percy.
“Oh thank merlin we found you” he said out of breath. “Where’s the transfiguration classroom?” he asked quickly.
I chuckled as both he and Draco looked at us pleadingly knowing how strict McGonalgall was. “Go up one floor, go left, first classroom on the right,” I said.
“Thanks Aries,” both he and Draco said in unison.
“They do know they still have 15 minutes to get to class right?” Zoe said.
“They still don’t know the schedule but it is funny seeing them race towards the classroom. I only father could see them, he’d have a fit.” laughed Corvus.
We made our way to Herbology which we had with the Hufflepuffs who weren’t so bad. They were good allies due to their loyalty and we thought to be weak but could actually hold their own so if you had one on your side they were a great asset. Professor Sprout talked about what we would be doing and I couldn’t help but grumble, “This is servant’s work. Why can’t they have the house elves do it?” Michael and Corvus who I paired up with both agreed.
Herbology couldn’t end soon enough but when it finally did end we went to charms which went well with the Ravenclaws and then headed to the Great Hall for lunch. Michael got my attention while we were eating, “Potter keeps staring at you,” he said.
I just sighed, “I know but I’m not going to waste my time on him.”
My friends knew of my dislike for Charles and though I never told I’m sure they knew it was because of the relationship with my mother or lack thereof because most of her time was spent with Charles.
We headed down to the dungeons and as ever Severus burst in slamming the door and speaking in a serious tone. “You are all third years, however many of you have the potion skills of a child” he said looking at most of the Gryffindors.
“We will begin with a blood replenishing potion. Instructions are on the board, it will be dues at the end of class. Begin.” I of course paired up with Corvus, Rigel with Regulus and Michael with Zoe. It was easy of course, the perks of having a potions master tutor you.
Dinner was a quiet affair and soon we were back in the common room working on homework and enjoying our freetime. I was playing a game of chess with Corvus when Marcus Flint came up to us.
“Black I was wondering if you were interested in joining the quidditch team as our seeker,” he said knowing that I played since our parents ran in the same social circles.
“I thought Higgs was your seeker?” I asked.
“Yeah well he has a lot of pressure for his O.W.L.s and decided to quit.” Flint said in an annoyed tone.
I took my time to answer as if it was a hard choice for me and after a minute I answered, “When are tryouts?”
Flint grinned, “Friday two weeks from today at 5.”
“I’ll be there,” I said. When I turned my attention back to the game I realised that my queen no longer moved and that I had lost.
“Check mate” said Corvus with a smug smile on his face. “That’s what happens when you talk about a silly game instead of paying attention.”
I just sighed, Corvus enjoyed watching quidditch but wasn’t a fanatic and playing didn’t interest either. He cared more about politics which is great due to him being the heir of the Malfoy family. I too am well versed in politics but whereas I excel in physical activities such as quidditch and dueling Corvus is much better in politics.
“Well that was a good game but I’m heading to bed now,” I said.
“Really it’s only 9:00,” complained Rigel.
“Yes well I still have to train tomorrow early so I’m off to bed.” I told them as I made my way to my dorm. I’m happy that Charles didn’t bother me today but I know it won’t last, but I’ll enjoy the time I have without him bothering me for now.
Charles P.O.V. Same Day
I can’t say that I wasn’t disappointed that Aries went into Slytherin. Of course dad has told about how they’re all evil and slimy snakes who couldn’t be trusted while mom told me there were good Slytherins but to be wary until they showed their true intentions.I couldn’t help but feel jealous as I saw Aries with Perseus.
Aries always spent time with Perseus and did lots of things with him, but he could never spare the time to do the same with me. I couldn’t think about it much though as Dumbledore gave his welcome speech and talked about how the third floor corridor was restricted unless you wanted to die a painful death. I don’t know if that would be in a school full of children but as long as I minded my business I'd be okay. We followed Ron’s brother Percy not to be confused with Aries’s other brother Perseus to the Gryffindor common Room. “The password changes every fortnight so be sure to check the board inside.” said Percy and then said the password, “Caput draconis”. “The boys are up the stairs to the right and the girls the same to the left.” Percy said as we were directed to our dorms. I quickly wrote a letter to mom and dad about being placed in Gryffindor and added Aries’s placement to inform mom in case he forgot, which he did a lot. After sending my owl Apollo off with the letters I said goodnight to my dorm mates and went to sleep.
I woke up excited since I’d finally be able to learn magic. Despite being the boy who lived I didn’t get my wand until I got my Hogwarts letter. Instead I just learned the theory behind many spells and got to try them when I finally got my wand. Head to the Great Hall with Ron who was still half asleep. I noticed that Aries was already there with his group of friends and cousins. I tried to get his attention but he would even spare a glance at me. After McGonalgall came around and gave us our time tables the morning mail arrived. I noticed my mum’s owl Aurora heading toward Aries and gave him a letter and then made its way towards me. I received the letter and gave Aurora a piece of toast as I read the letter which was mum and dad telling me how proud they were of me being in Gryffindor and to make sure to pay attention in class.
First Class we had was Herbology with the Hufflepuffs which went by quickly. I paired up with Ron and another boy called Seamus Finnigean. Next we had transfiguration which unfortunately we had with the Slytherins. Ron would not stop complaining about them but I couldn’t blame him. I know mum told me to keep an open mind about them but everything else that dad has told me about Voldemort and his followers, I think it’s fair if I doubted them.
Unfortunately Ron and I got lost and just when we thought we were safe and McGonagall wouldn’t know she transformed from a tabby cat to her human form!
“That was bloody brilliant!” exclaimed Ron.
“Thank you for that assessment Mr. Weasley. Perhaps it would be more useful if I were to transfigure Mr. Potter and yourself into a pocket watch, that way one of you may be on time.” She scolded us.
I tried to save us saying, “ We got lost,”
“Well perhaps a map. I trust you don’t need one to find your seats.” she said.
Due to our tardiness we lost points which Perseuas and Draco seemed to enjoy. Having to turn a matchstick to a needle was difficult despite all the theory I’d learned about transfiguration. I got soon followed by Granger who seemed miffed that I got it before her but didn’t say anything.
The worst part of today would be potions though. I know how much Snape hates my father and by extension me. I made sure to be on time for his class as I didn’t want to give him any reason to take points or give me detention. As Ron and I took our seats near the back the door opened with a bang, and Professor Snape walked in with his robes billowing behind him.
He began to take the role and paused at my name, “Ah, Yes,” he said softly, “Charles Potter. Our new — celebrity.”
Draco, Perseus, and their friends Crabbe and Goyle sniggered behind their hands. Snape finished calling the names and looked up at the class.
“You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion making,” he began. He spoke in barely more than a whisper, but they caught every word — like Professor McGonagall, Snape had the gift of keeping a class silent without effort. “As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don’t expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses.…I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death — if you aren’t as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach.”
More silence followed this little speech. Ron and I exchanged looks with raised eyebrows. Hermione Granger was on the edge of her seat and looked desperate to start proving that she wasn’t a dunderhead. “Potter!” said Snape suddenly. “What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?”
Powdered root of what to an infusion of what? I glanced at Ron, who looked as stumped as I was; Hermione’s hand had shot into the air.
“I don’t know, sir,” I said.
Snape’s lips curled into a sneer. “Tut, tut — fame clearly isn’t everything.” He ignored Hermione’s hand. “Let’s try again. Potter, where would you look if I told you to find me a bezoar?”
Hermione stretched her hand as high into the air as it would go without her leaving her seat, but I didn’t have the faintest idea what a bezoar was. He tried not to look at Malfoy, Black, Crabbe, and Goyle, who were shaking with laughter.
“I don’t know, sir.” “Thought you wouldn’t open a book before coming, eh, Potter?”
I forced himself to keep looking straight into those cold eyes. Snape was still ignoring Hermione’s quivering hand. “What is the difference, Potter, between monkshood and wolfsbane?”
At this, Hermione stood up, her hand stretching toward the dungeon ceiling. “I don’t know,” I said quietly. “I think Hermione does, though, why don’t you try her?” A few people laughed; I caught Seamus’s eye, and Seamus winked.
Snape, however, was not pleased. “Sit down,” he snapped at Hermione. “For your information, Potter, asphodel and wormwood make a sleeping potion so powerful it is known as the Draught of Living Death. A bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat and it will save you from most poisons. As for monkshood and wolfsbane, they are the same plant, which also goes by the name of aconite. Well? Why aren’t you all copying that down?” There was a sudden rummaging for quills and parchment. Over the noise, Snape said, “And a point will be taken from Gryffindor House for your cheek, Potter.”
It didn’t get any better as Neville melted his cauldron and I was blamed for it. When it was time for dinner I was relieved to know I got through the first day. If it wasn’t for Snape it would have been perfect. As soon as dinner finished we headed back to the common room. I played a couple of games of chess with Ron and failed to win a single one. Ron, despite his lack of effort in class, was actually a good strategist so it was difficult to beat him at a game such as chess. It was time for lights out and after getting ready I quickly drifted off to sleep.

Chapter Text
Aries P.O.V.
Two weeks later I found himself on the quidditch pitch with my Nimbus 2000. Father and grandfather, ever the quidditch fanatics always made sure that Percy and I had the newest brooms. News of me trying out for seekers spread due to my friends telling everyone. The students of Hogwarts hadn’t seen me play so some came out to watch the tryouts. Nobody else was trying out for the position so the tryouts were just a formality. “Okay, we have two spots open, seeker and keeper. Those trying out for keeper to the left, seekers to the right,” said Flint. For keeper there was the fourth year there was Miles Bletchley and Lucien Bole. They had to keep the chasers Adrian Pucey and Regulus Lestrange from scoring and whoever let the least amount of quaffles in would be the keeper. In the end, Bletchley saved more quaffles. I just had to try to catch the snitch while avoiding getting hit by the bludgers. It was very quick as there were only two spots to fill and not many people tried out as the Slytherins team had been undefeated for the past 6 years, so they decided to keep the same team. Of course, I sent a letter informing my family that I had made the team.
It was around this time that Professor Snape had given me a note saying that the headmaster would like to see me after dinner. I sighed as he knew that it would be about his house placement and Charles. “What’s got you looking like you lost your inheritance?” asked Michael as we ate dinner. “Dumbledore wants to speak with me after dinner.” My friend looked at me with sympathy. “Oh how I wish the old coot would just drop dead or at least be kicked out of the castle.” sighed Rigel. “Yeah well we can’t kill him and Uncle Lucius and Rodolphus haven't managed to get him out of Hogwarts yet either,” I responded. Uncle Lucius and Rodolphus were both on the Board of Governors.
As soon as dinner ended I made my way up to the headmaster's office and stopped at the large griffin statue. I looked at the note I was given which said ‘I find myself enjoying acid pops very much’ -Albus Dumbledore. Not wasting my time questioning his sanity, I said acid pops, and the statue began to move. I knocked and the door opened, waiting for me was the headmaster. “Ah welcome Aries I was hoping you would come,” he said in his grandfatherly tone. “Please sit, I just wanted to check-in and see how you were adjusting here at Hogwarts. I know it is different from Durmstrang which you previously attended but I hope you will soon come to find Hogwarts like a second home.” I strengthened my occlumency shields and kept a straight face, “Thank you for your concern headmaster, I am settling in great with the help of my housemates.” He smiled, “Yes you were sorted into Slytherin which came as a surprise if I said so myself. Both your father and mother were in Gryffindor.”
I felt a small prod towards my mind and made sure my shield was still strong, “Yes well despite that I’ve been surrounded by Slytherins all my life as my father was the only member of the Black family to be sorted into Gryffindor.” Dumbledore kept the same face, “So you spend a lot of time with your father’s side of the family,” he said. I could hear the undertone of disappointment in his voice. “Yes, along with my step-mother’s family the Rowles as well. Not that it’s any of your business headmaster” I said and caught a flash of shock at the news concerning my step-mom’s family being involved. “Of course I apologize for overstepping the boundaries my boy. I hope you understand that things at Hogwarts work differently than at Durmstrang,”
I know he wanted me to tell him about the Dark Art classes I took there and what we did, and try to ‘guide me back to the direction of the light’.
“I just want to make sure that you know that I am here if you are struggling with the effects left to you from attending Durmstrang.” Not being able to take enough of his bs I ended the conversation. “Headmaster I know how things work at Hogwarts and know what is and is not accepted. Anything else I do outside of school is none of your business.
After that, the headmaster didn’t attempt to contact me.
3rd P.O.V.
Things went by smoothly, going to classes, doing homework, and the students were enjoying their free time. Sometime later during the week, the first years had their flying lessons which was interesting, to say the least. The Slytherins arrived first with the Gryffindors just barely making it on time. Madam Hooch, a serious-looking lady with yellow eyes began to speak. “Welcome to your first flying lessons. If you are right-handed, stand on the left of your broom, if you are left-handed, stand on the right side,” they did just that. “I want you on the count of three to put your hand over your broom and say up. Ready one, two, three.” A chorus of ‘ups’ could be heard but not everybody’s broom went up immediately. Perseus’, Draco’s, and Charles’ went up on the first try. People like Neville however did not have the same luck. He lost control of his broom, “Longbottom get back here!” shouted Madam Hooch. Neville fell and the flying instructor ran over to him. “Oh, that’s a broken wrist. Nobody is to get on their brooms while I take Mr. Longbottom to the infirmary,” she said as she walked away with Nevile.
“Did you see the look on his face?” laughed Draco. “You’d think he’d remember to land on his fat arse,” Percy and the rest of the Slytherins laughed as well. Perseus went over and picked up the remembrall. “Look at what he dropped,” Draco looked over with interest, “Well Percy I think we should play a game of catch while we wait. Don't you think?” “Draco you are absolutely right,” Percy agreed but before they could start Charles spoke up, “Give it back that’s not yours. Neville’s gran gave it to him.” The Black and Malfoy heirs look at him amused, “What are going to do if we don’t give it back?” as he grabbed the remembrance and got onto his broom. Charles quickly went to get his broom but was stopped by Hermione Granger, “Charles no you'll get in trouble and lose points.” Charle just ignored her and followed Percy into the sky. “Give it back here Black or I’ll knock you off your broom!” Percy looked at him curiously, “Is that so? Well, I guess we’ll just see if you can catch it.”
He threw the remembrall. Charles raced towards it and managed to grab it by doing a sharp 90-degree turn right before he hit a wall.
The feeling of pride that he felt was short-lived as Professor McGonagall came out looking angry as ever. “Mr. Potter!” she yelled, “Well, never in all my years of teaching.” she trailed off. “Come with me, Mr. Potter.” The Slytherins smirked as they saw the golden boy follow the transfiguration teacher. “Is it too much to hope he’ll be expelled?” asked Draco. Percy just responded, “No Dumbledore would never let that happen to his golden boy.” As Charles followed Professor McGonagall he noticed that they were not headed in the direction of the headmaster’s call, but rather the Defense Against the Dark Arts class.
She knocked to make her presence known and then spoke, “Professor Quirrel may I borrow Wood please?” He answered with his stutter, “Yes professor.” She motioned for both boys to follow her into an empty classroom and said, “Wood I have found you a seeker,” Oliver looked surprised, “Potter?” McGonagall looked excited, giddy even. “I saw him and he has amazing reflexes, he’ll be a great quidditch player just like his father.” I was confused, “I thought first years weren’t allowed to play on the house team?” She looked down at Charles and said, “I will talk to the headmaster about it. Don’t worry about it, Potter.” Oliver looked at Charles and said,
“You gotta be good for McGonagall to bend the rules for you and to be the youngest Seeker in a century. Try to keep it a secret though and ask your parents to send you a broom. Be on time for practice.”
Charles P.O.V.
I decided to make my way towards my next class since flying lessons would be over by the time I got back when I ran into Aries and his cousin Regulus as I turned the corner. “Wow, the youngest seeker in a century. I guess Potter can’t help but use his fame and family name to get what he wants just like his daddy,” sneered Regulus. I was shocked to see them and realized that they heard some being on the team wouldn't be a secret. “Uh hey, Aries can we talk?” I asked nervously. I had wanted to apologize for what I said against his dad before we got sorted but he was always surrounded by his who to be a first-year were intimidating as a group. Both Aries and Regulus shared a look before Aries spoke, “Go on ahead Reg I’ll catch up.”
Realizing that he was going to hear me out I quickly said what I wanted to say before he changed his mind. “I’m sorry for what I said against you dad. I just got angry with Perseus and I didn’t mean it but he was picking on Ron with Malfoy.” I said and anxiously waited for his response. “I’ll forgive you as long as you don’t speak about my family and don’t anyone who doesn’t already know that Lily is my mother. With your fame, I can only imagine the field the Daily Prophet would have.” Hurt that he didn’t want anyone to know we were brothers even though everyone knew he and Perseus were brothers and hurt and made me angry at Perseus as he had my brother and everybody knew it while I was alone. Understanding what he meant about the press finding out we’re related I understood which made me hate being the Boy Who Lived as it also worked against my favor of trying to have a relationship with my brother. “I knew he wouldn’t change conditions so I agreed. “Okay,”
He looked pleased but before he left he said, “I heard you were having trouble in Snape’s class. Just read your book and choose a different partner because Weasel won’t help you get any better.” Aries didn’t wait for me to respond as he left to catch up with Regulus. I was annoyed about the comment he made about Ron but deep down knew that he was right. Ron didn’t pay attention in class but I wasn’t gonna leave him just because of that. I’ll just make sure to read and be as prepared as I can be for potions. I didn’t get to talk to Aries afterward as he didn’t reach out to me and I was busy with class and quidditch practice.
Aries P.O.V.
Weeks later and it was Samhain or the muggles, mudbloods, and blood traitors call it Halloween. As we were eating I remembered the flying lesson the first years had along with my brother’s behavior towards the Longbottom boy. I went to him and said, “I know the Longbottom boy isn’t very strong but his last name still has a lot of influence. He could be useful in the future so apologize to him for what happened during the flying lesson.” Perseus along with Draco looked ready to protest, “I’m not saying be friends with him or apologize publicly but let him be for now.”
Both boys agreed and just then Quirrel burst in yelling about a troll in the dungeons. The headmaster quickly spoke, “All prefects please lead the students to their common room,” as he along with the other teachers went to assess the situation. Regulus looked incredulous and said,” He does know that our common room is in the dungeons right? Where the troll is?” His twin just looked at him saying, I bet he wishes the troll would get rid of us evil Slytherins.”
The prefects got our attention and told us to go to the library instead. I looked over to where the Gryffindor’s were and didn’t see Charles or the Weasel. Deciding to leave it up to the teachers I went to the library. An hour later we were told that the troll was taken care of and we could return to our common room.
Professor Snape called me into his office though, “It seems that your brother ever the Gryffindor went to look for the troll with Weasley.” I don’t know why I was surprised; that is something he would do. Just like his father. “They are alright along with Miss Granger who claims to have sought the troll out and both boys followed her. I just thought I’d let you know about Potter.” I nodded, “Thanks Uncle Sev,” and went back to where the rest of the Slytherin house was getting ready. We had about an hour before curfew and were off to do our rituals for Samhain. It has been done for years and the headmasters have never caught on. We made our way through the grounds of the school which were never used and out of sight.
In a circle, the seven of us, Corvus, Rigel, Regulus, Michael, Zoe, Justin McNair, and I formed a circle. I began the ritual, “Tonight is the first of three nights, on which we celebrate Samhain. It is the end of the harvest, the last days of summer, and the cold nights wait on the other side for us. The bounty of our labor, the abundance of the harvest, the success of the hunt, all lies before us. We thank the earth for all it has given us this season, and yet we look forward to winter, a time of sacred darkness.” The other quietly repeated after me as I continued, “The seven of us form this circle to give our thanks to the dark who has protected us.”
I began the chant that would welcome the dark, who would then accept any rituals we wished to perform, “ut darem te nostri sanguinis est,” As head of the circle I went first, “I have accepted the darkness in me, I have given my mind, body, blood, and now I give my heart. This is my final rite before I declare dark. Cor meum ad te,” I said as I took my knife and carved the symbol of the dark which was four triangles entangled together with a crescent moon on its side at the top. I let the blood spill. I drew the proper runes in the ground. I then felt the dark come and accept my sacrifice. It welcomed me into its embrace and made me feel safe. When I finished the others who had rituals went as well. My cousins did the same ritual as we were going to declare dark on the Winter Solstice.
When we finished we got rid of any evidence left behind and went back to our common room. On the way there Corvus and I checked on our brothers, “You guys okay?” asked Corvus. Percy looked at me and said, “Yeah we didn’t do any rituals but we did thank the dark and lady magic.” We both nodded approvingly, “Good now head to bed it’s late.” They ran off to their dorms.
I noticed the blood seeping through my shirt. The wounds I inflicted upon myself had to heal naturally or it wouldn’t really be a sacrifice which is necessary when using dark magic. I cleaned up and headed to bed thinking about the quidditch match between Slytherin and Gryffindor that would be happening soon.
After Halloween, there were no more incidents involving a troll and before I knew it, it was time for the match against Gryffindor. My parents and grandparents along with Lily and James were coming. I knew that Lily and James were mostly coming for Charles and not for me. It didn’t bother me as much as I knew that the rest of my family would be there. Aunt Narcissa and Bellatrix couldn’t be there due to prior engagements involving a charity banquet.
After a quick breakfast, we made our way to the locker room where Marcus gave his pep talk, “Okay we’ve had the cup for six years and I’ll be damned if we lose while I’m the captain of this team. Black find the snitch as quickly as possible. Beaters try to knock out their chasers and Vaisey do not let a single quaffle get in. If any of you fail I will give you detention with Filch and encourage him to use the old techniques they used to have in place.” We just nodded and didn’t say anything as the message was clear. Do your best, if you fuck up you’re fucked.
We flew out and heard Lee Jordan who was the commentator for all quidditch matches. “He comes Slytherin, The keeper Bletchley, Flint, Lestrange, Pucey, Rookwood, Dolohov, and Black” he announced with not much enthusiasm. When the Gryffindor team came out he shouted, “Now the great Gryffindor team! Wood, Bell, Johnson, Spinnet, Weasley, Weasley, and the youngest seeker in a century and Boy Who Lived Charles Potter!” Charles got a lot of cheers when his name was mentioned. Before we started I looked for my parents and saw mum, dad, Uncle Remus, grandfather Orion, and grandmother Walburga in the Slytherin section of the stands with Uncle Sev and then saw Lily and James in the Gryffindor stands.
Madam Hooch went to the middle, “Now I want a nice clean game. From all of you.” she said looking at Slytherin. We all just smirked knowing that probably wouldn’t happen. She blew her whistle and the quaffle was thrown in the air. The quaffle is released and immediately caught by Slytherin Captain Marcus Flint. He passes to Rookwood who shoots! No, wait it’s a fake and passes back to Flint and he scores a goal for Slytherin.” he said dejectedly. I smile and turn my focus to looking for the snitch. I noticed Charles looking in my direction for any sign that I’d seen the snitch. The game went on with Slytherin scoring three more times and Gryffindor twice. Things were going well when all of a sudden Charles’ broom started to go crazy. I realized someone must have been jinxing it but didn’t interfere as I had enough self-preservation and knew I’d just get caught in to jinx as well. Flint took this time to score four more times before everyone realized what was going on and paused the game.
There was a commotion in the Slytherin section where the teachers and visitors were and suddenly Charles’ broom stopped acting crazy. “It seems Potter has gotten control over his broom. Now that the game has started again the ball is in possession of Gryffindor. Bell passes to Johnson who is looking as brilliant as always and hasn’t accepted my invitation to Hogsmead.” “Jordan!” I heard McGonagall scold him. “And the quaffle is intercepted by Lestrange. Honestly, I don't know how his parents got out of prison.” Again professor McGonagall yelled at him “Jordan just commentate the game or I will find someone else to do it!” Lee who didn’t look the least bit sorry apologized.
Barely avoiding the bludger the Weasley twins were sending my way I suddenly caught a glimpse of gold and so did Charles, we both went after it. It was close as we both had Nimbus 2000s but I had more experience. It was just out of reach and not willing to lose to Charles. I shoved him in order to slow him down. He looked surprised but kept going. I had to lead just a little but it was enough for me to be able to grab the snitch before him. “After that unsportsmanlike play which should have been a foul, just saying, Aries Black catches the snitch and earns Slytherin 150 points. The end score was 320 - 30.
Slytherin cheered and I saw my family cheering with smiles on their faces. The rest of the team came up and hoisted me up for winning the first game of the season, especially against the Gryffindorks. We made our way to the locker rooms where we celebrated some more and then started to make our way towards the common room where a party would be taking place. I left the group as I spotted my parents, Uncle Remus, and grandparents with Percy and made my way over.
Mum spotted me first, “There he is my quidditch star!” she said excitedly as she pulled into a hug. “Hey mum and dad,” I said. Dad looked surprised at me calling Elizabeth mum so I guess she didn’t tell him about our conversation before I left. Dad didn't bring it up and instead congratulated me, “I’m telling you pup if you give up the Black lordship your grandfather and I won’t even be mad.” “He’s Aries, hell I might be madder if you don’t become a professional quidditch player.” Grandmother Walburga slapped both my dad and grandfather’s shoulders, “Don’t encourage that type of behavior. He will be Lord Black when he comes of age. I will not have one of my grandsons give it up to be some common hooligan, but you did play well dear,” she said. “It was a good catch though cub,” said Remus. “Thanks uncle Moony,” I said.
We talked a bit more when a voice behind us interrupted, “Excuse me Aries can I talk with you?” asked my mother Lily. “Of course mother,” I answered. I walked towards a secluded corner where we would be out of sight of others. “Good job today but you shouldn’t have shoved your brother. It wasn’t right. He could’ve gotten hurt and you didn’t even try to help him when his broom was out of control. What you did is something a Slytherin would do.” What she said registered a second later and she looked ashamed but didn’t take it back.
“Yes, we Slytherins are horrible and evil. I just did what I had to do to win. I didn't try to hurt him. As for when his broom lost control if I had tried to help I’d just end up getting hurt as well and you’d probably have two injured sons but of course it doesn’t who gets hurt as long as it wasn’t Charles.” I ranted. She took a breath and spoke again, “Aries I’m sorry that was out of line for me and I didn’t think of it from your perspective. You’re right you could’ve gotten hurt and I would have been just as worried if it was you in Charles’ position.” she said sincerely. We stayed silent for a minute, “You haven’t sent any letters since you got sorted.” she said, trying to make conversation. “Sorry I’ve been busy with class and quidditch, but I’ll try to write more often,” I said.
“It’s okay, but I also wanted to ask you about what you were going to do for Christmas this year,” she asked. I sighed as answered, “I can go for a couple of days and spend Christmas Eve with you, but we have plans for the Solstice this year and can’t change them. I can go afterwards and have dinner with you .” She looked sad at the news that I wouldn’t be able to spend Christmas with her, James, and Charles.
“Do your plans on the Winter Solstice have anything to do with the old Black traditions?” she asked. I sighed as I knew she was not a fan of the dark arts. She was okay with them, understanding that magic was all about intent but still did not like the idea of me getting into it fearing that I would dive in too deep and trigger the Black family madness. “Yes it does if you must know. It is going to be a family affair with the Malfoys, Lestranges, Rowles, and my grandparents as well,” I answered. She looked like she wanted to object but chose not to. “Mother I know that the Malfoys and Rowles were aligned with the Dark Lord but they are good people. They’re family and treat me as such even though we aren’t related through blood. Elizabeth and her family are my family as well.” Lily nodded. “We have to go but I’ll see you during your break. Be careful and I love you,” she said. “I love you as well mother” I responded and she made her way to Charles to say goodbye and left with James.
My parents and grandparents left not long after and I walked with Perseus down to the dungeons. “That was a really great catch,” said Percy. I chuckled and said, “That was nothing. You should see my friend Victor from Durmstrang. He’ll go pro for sure.” I told him. When we entered the common room the celebration was in full swing. My arrival was announced by Harper Rookwood, one of the chasers on the team, “There he is the man of the hour!” she shouted. Everyone cheered and those who didn’t get congratulated me. I saw my cousins together and went towards them.
“It was a good catch, and very Slytherin like the way you shoved Potter to get the snitch,” said Regulus. “Yes well anything to win,” I responded. Rigel sighed, “Enough with this quidditch talk it’s not that great of a sport,” he said. He had the talent for quidditch but didn’t enjoy it. “Honestly the way you talk sometimes makes you sound like a muggle,” his brother teased. Rigel fumed at the insult, “Take that back, I’m nothing like those filthy muggles!” he spat.
“All right, calm down you too,” Corbus said, trying to avoid an argument. Just then Zoe and Michael came towards us. “I noticed pretty boy over here looked like he got his allowance cut off. What happened?” asked Zoe. “Oh nothing Reg just compared him to a muggle,” I said nonchalantly. “Well I think everyone would be insulted being compared to a muggle,” she said. Remembering I had something to do I excused myself from the group. “Ooh lover boy off to write to his girlfriend,” I heard Michael say behind me. I flipped him the bird and headed to my dorm.
I was going to send a letter but it wasn’t a love letter. My friends from Durmstrang and I have been in correspondence but my best friend besides Corvus was who I talked with the most, Adelaide Rosier. She is my best friend and though I don’t think of her as anything more it would be a beneficial relationship politically and financially. Not that I needed more money, but more was good. I read her recent letter,
Dear Aries,
By the time you’re reading this I’m sure you will have already won your quidditch game. Yes I know you will win, I don’t need to be a seer to know that. I will not lie and say that I do not miss you but don’t get any ideas as to why. I have standards and the fact that I am friends with you let alone your best friend, is enough to have me question my sanity.
School is different without you here however I am not the number one student in Dark and battle magic; so I guess your transfer did do some good. Karkaroff is as irritating as ever and lacks tact when he tries to get information from me on you. I sometimes wonder why the Dark Lord made him a death eater. Pettigrew could give him a run for his money I’m sure. They’d get along for sure though, cowards the both of them.
My mother found the books on dark magic, blood magic and necromancy you wanted and I have sent them with this letter. I don’t know why you;d want the book on dark magic as it goes over what we’ve already learned and you know how to cast the unforgivables. I’d say you could give your aunt Bella a run for her money with your cruciatus curse. Langton deserved it though. It’s a shame they don’t teach necromancy at Hogwarts. You could have been a great necromancer. You still can if you get a private tutor which is something to think about. The next time I want a book from the Black library I expect you to do the same.
As I reach the end of this letter I wish to be sincere and hope that you are doing well. I do miss you even though I hate to admit it you are my best friend as I am yours. I hope Potter isn’t bothering you. I look forward to seeing each other on the Winter Solstice when we both declare dark. Please stay safe and try not to kill or torture anybody.
Sincerely Adelaide Rosier
I chuckled at her comment about torturing or killing someone. I have killed a person and have tortured as well. With the last name Black comes pride and when somebody insults the Black name they are punished and shown their place, which is what I did with Timothy Langton. As for how I learned to cast the unforgivables in the first place is because they are taught in our second year. We practiced on animals which was fine with me. Corvus however took some time to get used to the animals thrashing around in pain but quickly got over it and could cast all three unforgivable easily. Father was a bit worried that we learned that at such a young age but mum helped calm him down.
She explained how with the war that would soon come when the Dark Lord came back we had to be prepared. The first time I killed a person however was a game of muggle hunting with grandfather Orion, aunt Bellatrix, and uncle Lucius. I lost the game but got two kills. My father was very distressed when he found out and since then any game of muggle hunting has been done in secret. I expect they will take Perseus and Draco for their first game during the winter holidays.
I quickly wrote my letter and tied it to Erebus, an eagle owl who got his name due to having pitch-black feathers. I went back downstairs and enjoyed the rest of the party.

Chapter Text
The next game we played was against Ravenclaw who we annihilated 260-30. The other matches were Gryffindor Vs Hufflepuff which the lions won, 170-50. Hufflepuff lost to Ravenclaw 160-10 but it was close because both seekers saw the snitch but Diggory got a bludger to the face. He’ll be alright I’m sure, and that pretty face of his too.
I caught wind that my brothers had challenged each other to a duel. “What do you plan to do about the duel?” I asked, “because I’m not saving your ass if you get caught because you got yourself into this.”
Perseus responded quickly, “Don’t worry; Draco and I weren’t planning on going,” he said calmly, “Besides we already informed Filch that some students were going to be out of bed after curfew in the trophy room.”
I smirked at him and praised him on his Slytherin-like plan. “Alright, good plan; now head to bed.” Percy ran off to bed. I could sleep well knowing he wouldn’t be in trouble.
We went to Hogsmead as a group and spent most of our time at Honeydukes, Zonkos, and Hog’s Head. It was about a week later when Slytherin lost 50 points overnight and Gryffindor lost 150 points. Despite losing 50 points Peaseus and Draco were applauded for making the lions lose even more. I looked over at the lion’s table with a smile as they moped and tried to figure out why they lost so many points. When they found out, Charles, Granger, and Weasley were shunned it seemed. I got the story from Draco who told me that they followed the golden trio to Hagrid’s hut and how they saw a dragon. They ran into Professor McGonagall and Perseus, having more sense hid quickly.
Draco, confused, realized why Percy hid when McGonagall scolded him, “Mr. Malfoy, what are you doing out of bed after curfew,” Draco quickly told her about what the other three were doing and led her to them where she then took points and assigned detention.
He met Perseus back in the common room and told him what happened. Draco had tried to get out of his detention but in the end, was sent to the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid. Which led to a frightened Draco returning to the common room and telling me what happened. I knew immediately that it was the Dark Lord. He’s been in contact with Aunt Bella and Uncle Lucius as they tried to find a way to bring him back into a physical body. They also managed to retrieve the Horcruxes and perform a ritual to destroy them in a way that would not hurt the Dark Lord. Except for Nagini and the diary just in case. When he came back he would look as he did before the Horcruxes.
I sent a letter to my Aunt Bella informing her that I knew the Dark Lord was here and asked if it had anything to do with what was hidden on the third-floor corridor.
Her response came two days later and explained that the Philosopher’s Stone was hidden in the school. She continued to say that after contacting the Dark Lord he has agreed to allow me to help him. I was surprised to find out that he was possessing Quirrell, and was told to speak with him.
I found myself outside the DADA classroom after dinner to speak with him. “Ah Aries Black, I’ve been waiting,'' said Quirrel with his stutter no longer there. He took off his turban and there he was; a shell of what he once was, the Dark Lord. “Bellatrix has informed me that you wish to help me in regaining a physical body,” his voice was raspy as he continued, “The Philosopher's Stone is here in Hogwarts. If you can get it and bring it to me you will be rewarded when I come back along with your family for their help.”
I bowed my head respectfully, “Though I am not marked I wish to help any way I can my lord.”
He looked at me approvingly, “We can remedy that when I return. I have seen you, bitter about your mother’s absence in your life because of your brother, the boy who lived; and yet you still care for the boy. You do not spend time with him but understand the importance of family and blood.”
As much as I wanted to deny that I cared about Charles I knew there was no use. I took a breath and answered him, “My lord I will not let my feelings towards him get in the way of my service to you.”
“That remains to be seen until the war begins but until then you are an unofficial servant of mine. You can enlist the help of your cousins, along with Mr. Yaxley, Ms. McNair. Their families have been loyal and I believe their children are as well.”
I nodded, “Thank you, milord,” He turned around, which I knew was my dismissal, and walked out.
I recounted everything else to the others. Michael let out a whistle, “Being trusted by the Dark Lord to do something important as this?” The others nodded, “No pressure.”
“I understand that this is overwhelming, but think about the rewards we’ll receive if we succeed. We’ll rise through the ranks quickly and earn favor for our families with the Dark Lord,” I told them. They decided that they would help and the first thing we had to do was check the third-floor corridor.
Not wanting to be suspicious it was just Regulus, Michael, and I was going to check the corridor when our brothers burst in. “He’s mad keeping a thing like that here,” Draco said out of breath.
“What have you been up to?” Zoe asked, with a raised eyebrow.
“There’s a bloody Cerberus on the forbidden corridor,” Percy said looking at me.
“How would mum react to such language, Percy?” I asked him in mock seriousness, “It is unbecoming a pureblood from the House of Black.”
Zoe decided to find out how they knew that intervened, “How do you know this?”
Draco and Percy looked at each other, “Potter and Weasley,’ they said in unison. “They also mentioned Nicholas Flamel but we don’t know why.”
“Why little brother, is because the Philosopher's Stone is here in Hogwarts.” They couldn’t help their jaws dropping. “You two will not attempt anything understood?”
They nodded but Draco spoke, “They’re gonna try to smuggle a dragon the oaf Hagrid has out of the castle tonight too.”
I brought my hand to my head. This was just too much; first, the stone, looking after Percy, and now a dragon! “Yeah, Aries, we found a note Weasley had saying that the dragon would be picked up today at midnight.” Percy said excitedly.
“Just do your homework, I’ll tell Uncle Sev about the dragon,” I told them. They ran up to their dorm.
“Well I at least we don’t have to see what’s protecting the stone anymore,” said Michael.
I left to notify Uncle Sev about the dragon and the idiotic first years. They couldn’t be trusted to deliver a dragon, they could get hurt. It would be better if they were caught and the dragon took out their hands.
I stopped at Uncle Sev’s office and knocked. The door swung open and I heard an ‘enter’ from within. He looked up at me, “What do you need?” he asked.
“The golden trio has a dragon which they got from Hagrid; they’re planning on sending it away at midnight but something could easily go wrong.”
Severus took this in, “You did well in telling me, I’ll take care of it. Five points to Slytherin for informing a teacher of such important matters.” After that Gryffindor was down even more points. It was just too good. They couldn’t win the house cup anymore.
My mood towards the winter holidays was dampened when I found out that Weasley would be spending it with the Potters. I couldn’t stand James, barely tolerated Charles, and only enjoyed my mother’s company.
The train ride home was uneventful and peaceful until Charles came. “Aries, can I talk to you please?” he asked.
I nodded and went outside. “Snape was the one who jinxed my broom during the quidditch match and I think he’s after whatever is in the third-floor corridor,” he said quickly in one breath.
“First of all Professor Snape did not jinx your broom. He may hate your father and by extension dislike you, but not enough to go to Azkaban for murdering you,” I told him.
He wouldn’t listen though, “No you're wrong he’s after the”
I cut him off, “Yes I know whatever is in the third-floor corridor.” I told him again, “I know you and my Uncle Sev don’t get along, but he’s not a bad person. I’ve known him my whole life okay? Uncle Moony is friends with him and you know he’s a great judge of character. Just forget about what you think you know okay.” I left it at that and returned to the compartment.
When we arrived at King’s Cross I snapped my fingers and my house elf Kreacher, who had been a gift, came to get my belongings. “Take everything home Kreacher and be careful.
He bowed his head, “Of course, Master.” The others summoned their house elves as well and did the same.
We said our goodbyes, and my cousins, little brother and I looked for our parents. Since they were together we just had to look for the platinum blonde hair of Lucius Malfoy which was easy enough. “My boys, it's been too long,” Aunt Cissa greeted all of us. I greeted mum and dad, and Aunt Cissa, Bella, and Uncle Lucius.
We then departed and reminded each other of our plans for dinner at Malfoy Manor. As we arrived home I went to my room to take a shower and change. Going back downstairs to leave mum and dad we’re waiting by the floo.
The only person left was Percy who always took forever. “About time, Perce,” I said. When we arrived dinner was being prepared by the elves so we sat in the living room talking about Hogwarts. I refrained from talking about what the Dark Lord asked of me; my father would not be happy and say I was too young for such things.
Aunt Bella and Uncle Lucius though looked at me with pride in their eyes. “Why are you staring at my son like he’s won the Quidditch World Cup?” asked dad. Uncle Lucius answered saying, “I feel that Aries and Corvus will accomplish great things this year.” Father didn’t believe him but didn’t push for more.
On the day of the Solstice, we got up early and had a family dinner with my father’s and mother’s side of the family. We exchanged gifts and had a pleasant conversation. I noticed mum looked sad and knew it was because her brother wasn’t there. Thorfinn Rowle had been a death eater who had been sent to Azkaban. He was one of the people Karkaroff named during his trial. I went over and gave her a final present.
“I thought you would like this,” I said as I handed her an envelope. Inside it was a letter from her brother I had given to her parents as well. I had managed to allow one of the guards to let Thorfinn send some letters to his family. I left her to read and a few minutes later she approached me with tears in her eyes.
“Thank you,” she said, “This means so much more than you know.”
I smiled at her, “Anything for family.”
When we returned home the next couple of hours were spent on getting ready for the Solstice and my declaration. A yule log was lit and got ready to leave at midnight. Mum went out and got the best-looking and most expensive robes she could find. I went over my rites and final declaration. Soon we all gathered around and chanted the necessary words in order to arrive at the Winter Solstice celebration. Anyone could go if they chanted the spell; dark magic protected us. If you tried to tell who was there your mind would blank. The dark also prohibited violence, as this was a celebration with no room for fights.
As we arrived there was a huge fire which people were gathering around. The Malfoys and Rowles had already arrived.
I greeted them, “Hello Grandfather Lucien and Grandmother Euphemia,” I greeted them. Even though Elizabeth didn’t give birth to me, they considered me a grandson. They also said that all purebloods are related one way or another so it doesn’t matter. When the others arrived we decided to split up and meet each other before the main event. I walked around with my cousins and brothers. I spoke with some friends including Adelaide and observed some rituals. I performed some to improve my intuition, strength, and discerning abilities. For what I have to do when I return to school I think it’s fair.
When the bell chimed three times we regrouped with our family. A woman, Cassiopeia Fawley stepped forward, “Now the time of the Solstice, as we gather together and rejoice with each other for what we have. On the longest day of the year, we gather and give our thanks to the dark and Lady Magic. This year we have some people who will perform their rites and rituals. Please come forward to those who wish to participate. I along with Adelaide, Corvus, Percy, and Draco went forward. Rigel and Regulus stayed behind as they were following the Lestrange tradition and would not be declaring until later. The people with minor rites and rituals went first. Perseus and Draco pledged their minds to the dark. They sliced their palms and let the blood fall over the runes. I was stuck in my own thoughts that I didn’t realize it was my turn.
I stepped forward and began, “On this night I plan to declare dark. I have felt the dark and let it guide me. I have offered my mind, body, blood, and now I give it my soul. I plan to do this knowing full well that I will forever be tied to the dark and accept it. ‘accipere animam meam,
ego enim dabo vobis volens accipere me in covina, in tenebris recipienti pignori obligo animam meam’”
I dragged the dagger across my palm and let the blood drop. I fell to my knees and I felt the presence of the dark. It welcomed me and I felt its embrace. I felt like I was safe like I was home. I was finally complete. I didn’t realize but I began to cry; not tears of sadness but of joy. I came back to my senses and slowly got up. It was then when I noticed the cheering. Everybody was clapping and yelling.
I went towards my parents and watched as Corvus and Adelaide did the same. He had the same reaction as me. When it was done we all chanted and the fire grew three times bigger. We danced and celebrated together; more rituals were performed. Tonight was a night for celebration and happiness.
We arrived home before the sun started to rise. Percy had fallen asleep about two hours ago. I returned to bed knowing that I had to go to my mother’s house tomorrow but didn’t think about it. I just thought about how I was officially a dark wizard, and I couldn’t help but feel that it was the best choice I ever made.
It was two hours later when I got up albeit grudgingly to go to Potter Manor. We decided it would just be me going because if everyone went, there would be chaos. I was going to spend the next three days there and arrive at King's Cross with them.
I said my goodbyes and made my way to the floo I grabbed some powder and spoke in a loud, clear voice “Potter Manor!”
We ate with Charles and Ron talking about quidditch when Charles spoke to me, “Hey Aries what’d you get for Christmas? I got a broom cleaning kit and some new robes, but the best thing was an invisibility cloak dad gave me!” he said excitedly. Ron and James looked like they wished he hadn’t told me about the cloak which I’m sure they did.
I tried my best to be enthusiastic, “That’s great, my dad has told me about the cloak. I’m sure you’ll have a lot of fun with it,”
He beamed at my response, “Yeah, if only I had the map it would be even better,” he said. I spoke before I could stop myself, “My dad and Uncle Moony remade one for me so I have one,”
He lit up, “Can I borrow it?” he asked excitedly.
“You have a Marauder's Map?” James asked.
“Not the original but a new and improved version of it,” I responded. James looked miffed that I had a map but didn’t say anything else.
When we finished breakfast I gave them their gifts including James and Ron. I gave Charles a broom servicing kit, my mother a rare book and potions and charms, James a new cloak, and Ron a new chessboard. He was surprised that I got him a gift. I knew he liked it even though he tried to hide it.
The rest of my time there was spent reading, avoiding James, Charles, and Ron, and talking to my mother. She surprisingly spent a lot of time with me. I enjoyed it a lot and wished it was like this all the time. I made sure not to fool myself into thinking that it would always be this way. After break things would go back to the way they were. I would be second to Charles.
Soon, much to my happiness, it was time to go back to school. We arrived half an hour before the train left which is surprising, but mother can be scary sometimes which is what had all of us out the door quickly.
I was searching for mum and dad when Aunt Cissa appeared, “Hello Aunt Cissa,” I greeted her.
She smiled at me, “Hello Aries, unfortunately, your parents were unable to see you off due to some urgent family matters,”
Lily tensed when Narcissa said, parents. I was disappointed that they didn’t come but I knew it had to be important.
“I believe you’re mistaken Narcissa since I, his mother,” Lily emphasised the word mother, “came to drop him off,”
Narcissa feigned shock, “Oh yes you’re his birth mother. I forgot because you see Elizabeth is always there for Aries’ like a mother should be unlike you.” Aunt Cissa spat. She was very protective over family and was always disgusted at Lily’s absence in my life.
Before things escalated I quickly said goodbye to mother and left with Aunt Cissa. “You didn’t have to antagonize her like that, you know,” I said as we made our way towards the others.
“I only said the truth Aries,” she responded calmly, “You can hardly call that woman you mother,”
I didn’t argue with her because she was right, but I would rather avoid confrontations.
I greeted the others when I saw them however aunt Bella pulled me aside, “You know what you must do when you return? she asked. I nodded and motioned her to continue.
“He has assigned this task to you, should you fail we will all face the consequences.” she said.
I nodded, “Yes Aunt Bella I won’t disappoint you or the Dark Lord. He shall be back by the end of the year.” I replied. Aunt Bella beamed at my answer and wished me luck.
I boarded the train with my cousins, Draco and Perseus had gone off somewhere but they’d be fine. The trip back was uneventful but we did have a conversation about the stone, “First of all how are we going to get the stone?” asked Rigel, “I mean if Dumbledore is there it’s going to be almost impossible to get it with him there,”
The others agreed and I thought about it, “He has to leave the castle. With his duty as Chief Warlock and Supreme Mugwump, he’ll have to leave to attend some business at some point. We'll wait until then.” I said. “We also have to think about what else could be guarding it,” I continued, “We know about the Cerberus and how to get past it but not the other obstacles which are sure to be in the way,” I said.
Regulus looked at me confused, “What do you mean we know how to pass the mangy mutt?” he asked.
“I spent time in the Black library looking for how to get past a Cerberus and the answer is music,” They accepted the answer as they knew I would be thorough in my research.
Zoe joined us soon afterwards, “Merlin, I’ve been looking for you guys everywhere,” said and sat down.I had to expand the compartment so we’d all fit comfortably. I added extra space for when Michael arrived and he did shortly after.
From there on we were uninterrupted.

Chapter Text
The feast was the usual affair and we headed to our common room. I spent time thinking of how to get the stone. I decided to owl Adelaide without telling her what I was planning to do. I’m sure she’ll have her questions but won’t ask them via owl. With that done I headed to bed knowing that Flint would make our day hell tomorrow for quidditch practice.
I was woken up before dawn and was told to get dressed for practice. Luckily I was used to waking up this early but that didn’t mean I enjoyed it. I got ready and headed downstairs where I saw the rest of the team waiting, “Is this everyone?” Flint asked.
“We’re still waiting on Lestrange,” replied Harper Rookwood. Regulus came down a minute later and received a tongue lashing from Flint.
Practice went on for three hours and we were then dismissed for breakfast. We returned to the common room to get ready. Classes were the same and again the time went by quickly.
There were no more incidents with Charles or his friends. Even Perseus and Draco were behaving.
Quidditch wise things were pretty intense. Gryffindor needed to suffer a bad defeat against Ravenclaw. I thought about what to do about this. I had connections in all houses some more than others. I may be able to convince them to play dirty but not all of them would do that.
I decided to speak with Roger Davies who was a chaser on the Ravenclaw team. “Roger, how would you like to play in the Cup finals?” I asked him.
“Aries, you know that’s what we all want, but you sound like you can guarantee that,” he responded. “Keep quiet about this,” I said as I passed him a couple of vials.
He looked at me confused, “What is this stuff?”
I smirked, “It’s a potion professional athletes use sometimes in games. It boosts strength, stamina, and focus. It’ll help you win against Gryffindor.” I explained, “All you have to do is slipped it into you teammate’s meals and you’ll be set,”
Roger seemed pleased to hear this, “What do you want in return?” he asked. “I’ll hold this for when I need a favor in the future ok? Just don’t forget about it,” I said as I walked away. With Gryffindor’s defeat secured I was a bit more stress-free. I didn’t tell Flint about it as there was always a small chance it would fail. A very small chance.
When the day of the game came everybody was filled with anticipation. Roger saw me and nodded his head. What I had given him was a diluted version of the athletic potion. It would be suspicious for a house team to play like professionals all of the sudden. The game started and Ravenclaw quickly took the lead. “Roger Davies scores the first points of the game,” said Lee, albeit dejectedly. It continued this way with Ravenclaw’s chasers getting past Oliver Wood. Gryffindor didn’t have much luck scoring and an hour in the score was 270-10. I was surprised at how well the potion was working.
I was grateful I didn’t give Davies the name of the potion; not that he’d be able to find it. It’s not public and not legal to use in official games. Ravenclaw kept racking up points rather quickly and it wouldn’t matter if Charles caught the snitch. Soon after Charles spotted the snitch at the same time that Ravenclaw’s seeker did. Both flew after it immediately. Charles had the advantage of a faster broom but the seeker was better inexperienced and enhanced abilities. Charles however got to the snitch first. Gryffindor began to cheer before they realized that they had still lost. The score was 380-190.
The Ravenclaw and Slytherin stand began to cheer, Ravenclaw because they still had a chance to win the cup and Slytherin because Gryffindor was out of the running. The field was cleared and everybody returned to their common room. The Ravenclaws would most likely be holding a party for their victory.
I, along with the others on quidditch, sat down to talk about our final game. “This is great, the lions can no longer win,” Flint said with a grin.
Harper spoke up, “Raven claw seemed to be a lot better today though. I’ve never seen them play that well,” she said.
I took that as my queue to explain what happened, “That’s because it wasn’t all of them,” I said. They turned around looking at me confused, “I made sure they would win. You see Roger Davies came into possession of a certain potion that enhances your physical abilities which is great for athletes,” I explained.
They realized what I’d done and grinned. “That was brilliant Black,” responded Flint. The others praised my efforts in eliminating the lions from the cup final.
Soon there were only a few weeks of school left and I’ve yet to get the stone. With the date of the cup final set there Flint was driving us harder than before. That along with final exams did not help my stress. It was during one of these days when Uncle Sev informed us that the headmaster would be leaving for a meeting with the minister. I quickly got those who were involved together. “Tonight we go after the stone,” I told them. I decided to only take two of them with me, Corvus and Zoe. The three of us had our own individual strengths which would work well together.
We made our way to the third-floor corridor and entered. The Cerebeus noticed us immediately, Corvus quickly cast a spell on a flute we had brought to play music. The beast quickly fell asleep and we noticed a trap door beneath it. Positively it led to wherever the stone was we went down. Looking back I know what we did went against my self-preservation instincts told me but I did not wish to fail the dark lord.
We landed on something soft that quickly entangled itself around us. Corvus, ever the potions prodigy who by extension knew quite a lot, spoke, “It’s a devil’s snare,” he said, “I can’t reach my wand. One of you cast a lumos or something,” he said.
I quickly grabbed my wand and spoke, “Lumos maxima” in a loud voice. The plant quickly let go of us and we continued. The next thing we encountered were what seemed to be birds, “What do you suppose we’re supposed to do here?” I asked.
All three of us were thinking intently when Zoe spoke, “They’re not birds, they’re keys.”
My gaze drifted to the broom leaning on the wall and decided to take care of this problem. “I’ve got it,” I said as I flew us dodging the flying keys to find the correct one.
They all looked the same when I noticed that one of them had a damaged wing. Believing it was the one I grabbed it and flew down. I quickly inserted the key which did unlock the door and we went through. The next obstacle was a troll but it was killed when we arrived.
“I notice a pattern,” said Zoe “Each obstacle that we’ve encountered has something to do with the staff. The Cerberus for the oaf Hagrid, devil’s snare for Sprout, charmed keys for Flitwick, troll for Quirrel.” she finished.
I nodded, “Whatever else is up ahead has to be Mcgonagall, Snape, and Dumbledore,” I said. We left the troll and came across a giant chessboard. Getting past it was easy as both Corvus and I were rather excellent players.
Before the game could end however Corvus realized that he would have to sacrifice his knight. Before he could say some speech about sacrificing himself I spoke, “Just get off your knight and have it move when you’re off,” I said.
He looked rather embarrassed that he hadn’t thought to himself, “Oh, yeah I could just do that,” he said. The game was finished and the door to the next room opened there were seven bottles and a riddle,
I reread the riddle and chose the potion that would allow us to move ahead. However I noticed that there was only enough for one person, while the other was enough for two people. “You two go back,” I said, “If I don’t return within the hour, alert Uncle Sev.
“No way I’m not leaving you here by yourself. We’re family and we stick together.” I sighed and looked at Corvus, “There’s only enough for one,” I said, “I’ll be fine but in the worst case scenario be ready to get Uncle Sev,” I assured him. “
If you die I’ll kill you myself,” he said.
Zoe turned to me, “Good luck Aries,” she said before they drank the potion and left.
I steeled myself and drank the potion and stepped forward. I entered another room which had a huge mirror. Inscribed at the top was “Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi”.
I knew it wasn’t Latin and after a minute I realized that it was spelled backwards. It said ‘I show not your face but your heart’s desire’. I looked at the mirror and at first nothing happened but a moment later it changed.
My family was there, dad, mum, and Perseus. I looked different too, I noticed that I had mum’s features. I realized that what I saw was the family I wish we were. I wish I was mum’s biological son, not some bastard whose mother didn’t make time for him. We were happy together as a family.
“That’s a rather nice desire Aries,” a voice said from behind me. I quickly turned around and came face to face with the dark lord.
“Milord,” I said as I bowed.
“I am glad to see that you’ve made it this far,” he said, “All you need to do now is get the stone,” I looked at the mirror which was the only place the stone could be hidden.
I was thinking when suddenly Charles came in. I was shocked and confused as to how he got in when I realized that Uncle Sev must have put a spell on the potions to refill.
He looked at me in shock, “Aries, what are you doing here?” he asked, “Where’s Snape?” I sighed as I thought of how I could fix this.
“Professor Snape isn’t here,” I said.
“That’s impossible, he’s after the stone he tried to kill me,” Charles responded. The dark lord laughed, “If Severus was trying to kill you, you would be dead by now.”
Charles looked confused, “But that would mean…” he trailed off. Quirrel turned so that the dark lord would be face to face with Charles.
“Do you see what I’ve become?”, asked the dark lord.
“Aries you’re not with him right?” Charles asked. “I was just proposing an opportunity to Black,” said the dark lord, “Much of his family was on my side and I was giving him a chance to do the same,” said Voldemort.
I noticed that he made it seem like I hadn’t chosen which was good. My true loyalties had to be hidden for now so I played along, “My family has made bad decisions but I’m not going to do the same I said,” as I grabbed my wand and fired a stunner at the dark lord. He quickly blocked it and fired back.
Charles wanted to help but he knew he couldn’t do much. He turned his attention to the mirror and felt something in his pocket. He knew it was the stone. Voldemort glanced at Charles and knew he had the stone. The dark lord stopped firing curses at Aries and cursed Charles instead. Charles was knocked out and Voldemort headed towards him.
I was nervous as to what he was going to do. I reached down into Charles’ pocket and pulled out a blood red stone. “You have done well,” said Voldemort, “for your success as I will reward you when I get my body back and allow your brother to live for now.”
I bowed my head, “Thank you my lord,” I said.
“I will leave now, but I must make it look like you suffered at my hands,” I nodded knowing what he was going to do, “Crucio!” he yelled and I felt the most painful experience ever.
I did my best not to scream but after a couple of seconds I finally screamed for what seemed like hours. I felt the dark lord fire more curses at me. I started to black out but before I did I saw the retreating form of Voldemort.
When I woke up I was in the infirmary. I saw a lot of gifts and cards on the table next to me. My movement woke my father who was sleeping at the foot of the bed. “Thank merlin you’ve woken up,” he exclaimed. “Not so loud dad,” I said.
“You made us worried sick. Elizabeth almost fainted when she heard what had happened,” he continued.
“What’s happened since?” I asked.
“Well, Quirrell is gone and so is the stone,” he answered.I looked at him confused, “How do you know about the stone?”
“Dumbledore told us what happened and why,” father said, “I will say that I am upset with him. It is his duty to protect the students and instead he put them in danger,” Sirius explained with a hint of anger.
Just then the doors to the infirmary opened and Dumbledore along with Lily and James entered, “I’m glad to see that you have awakened Aries,” he said his grandfatherly tone, “Though you have just woken up can you tell us what happened down with Quirrell and Voldemort?” he asked.
“Dumbledore, give him time he’s just gotten up,” responded father.”
“No, it’s ok,” I said sitting up straighter, “I knew what was in the third floor corridor because I overheard Charles,” I started, “When I found out you were gone I knew the stone would be in danger so I went down,” I said.
“My boy, why didn’t you tell the teacher?” he asked.
“I doubt they would have believed me. I would have told professor Snape but I couldn’t find him,” I explained.
I told them how I got through the obstacles and avoided telling them about Zoe and Corvus. “When I got to the mirror Quirrel was there,” I told them, “He took off his turban and there was the dark lord on his head. He tried to convince me to join him but I refused,” I continued, “It was then that Charles showed up. The dark lord gave him the same offer and that was when I attacked him,”
I said, doing my best to make myself look like a victim of the dark lord in order to preserve my image of believing in the light. “I wanted to buy time but the dark lord knocked Charles out and then tortured me with the cruciatus curse,” I finished.
Lily gasped, “Oh Aries, you did that for your brother?!” she cried, “I’m so sorry you had to go through that my baby!”
Dumbledore and James stood up, “You didn’t see the stone or who got it?” he asked.
“No sir,” I said.
“Very well rest Aries,” he said and left with James probably talking about who could have the stone. Lily decided to stay telling me that Charles had been discharged a day earlier.
The floo flared and out came mum. “Elizabeth I thought you were with Narcissa!” exclaimed father.
“I was until I found out that Aries had woken up,” she stopped when she saw Lily, “Well I’m surprised to see you here,” she said.
“What’s that supposed to mean,” Lily asked.
Elizabeth chuckled, “Nothing it’s just surprising to see you with the son that’s not Charles,” she said.
“How are you Aries?” she focused her attention on me, forgetting about Lily.
“I’m okay,” I responded.
“Haven’t you retained anything you’ve been taught about self preservation. You didn’t have trouble like this at Durmstrang but your first year at Hogwarts this happens,” Elizabeth said exasperated.
“Oh yes, learning the dark arts at Durmstrang is a lot better,” Lily said sarcastically.
“Yes he almost never died while he was learning there,” Elizabeth shot back.
I turned to Lily, “Mother, can you leave us please?” I asked, “There are some things we need to discuss,” I said.
“What do you have to talk about that you can’t say in front of me?” she asked, not liking the idea of being out of the loop.
“Matters of the Black family mother that are not privy to anyone outside the family,” I told her.
She reluctantly agreed to leave, “Goodbye Aries, I love you,” she said and said goodbye to father.
“What family matters do we have to talk about?” father asked. I thought of how I should tell them about the assignment given to me by the dark lord without them blowing a fuse.
“Earlier this year I obtained information about what was being hidden here at Hogwart,” I started, “I was then able to confirm that the dark lord was here as well and wanted what was hidden. I offered my services and he entrusted me with the task of retrieving the Philosopher’s Stone for him,” I waited for them to react for a moment.
“Father took a deep breath and finally spoke after a tense minute of silence, “What in the world possessed you to do such a thing?” he asked.
“What I did has put us in the dark lord’s good graces. When he soon returns our family shall be rewarded,” I said. “Unless you are going to join Dumbledore and the light.”
Father shook his head, “No I won’t be joining Dumbledore but I have not decided to join the dark lord either,” he spoke quietly.
“Well I have chosen father, and I won’t stand aside and watch our world crumble. I did something that would help us and I apologize for not telling but in the long run our family will benefit from this.” I stated firmly.
“Be that as it may, you will be grounded for a portion of the summer,” father looked at me as he spoke.
I opened my mouth to protest but father stopped me, “It depends on how well your success benefits us,” he said with a sly smile.
“Well look at that Aries,” Elizabeth said, “We’ve finally corrupted your father and brought out his inner Slytherin,” I chuckled, “It was only a matter of time mum.”
