Smells Like You

Summary:

Ruffnut is woken by a chill and puts on one of Fishlegs' tunics.

Work Text:

Ruffnut rubbed the large tunic against her face, breathing in her lover’s scent. He was sleeping beside her, as it was still the early morning, but a chill had woken her. She’d put on socks, and now, she was pulling on her lover’s tunic.

Fishlegs was a sound sleeper - he hadn’t noticed her getting out of bed or rummaging through the clothes he’d worn the day before. Ruffnut knew there were clean clothes in his chest, but she didn’t want to put those on. They wouldn’t smell like him.

The tunic was much too big on her. It fell down on one shoulder and fit her more like an oversized dress. She liked that. It was perfectly comfortable despite the way it didn’t fit her.

Ruffnut laid back down under the furs, began twirling some of Fishlegs’ fine blond hair between her fingers. He made a small sound, peeked open his eyes.

“Good morning, Ruff,” he said quietly.

“Good morning,” she responded with a smile. “How’d you sleep?”

Fishlegs looked past her out the window where the sun was splaying pink light into the room. “It’s still early,” he said. Fishlegs usually liked to sleep in, but he’d probably been woken by Ruffnut getting back into bed.

“Yeah.”

Fishlegs looked her over. “Is that my tunic?”

“No, it’s mine,” she said jokingly. “Of course it’s your tunic. It’s too big on me.”

“Then why are you wearing it?” Fishlegs raised his eyebrows.

“It smells like you.”

Fishlegs gave a sleepy smile, then closed his eyes again. Ruffnut continued playing with his hair.

“I would say we could trade clothes, but I’d never fit into yours,” he said.

Ruffnut laughed at the image her mind gave her. “No, no you wouldn’t.” She snuggled deeper into the tunic, then up against Fishlegs’ side. She, too, closed her eyes. Fishlegs was right. It was too early.

With a happy sigh, Ruffnut fell back into the dreamy depths of sleep.
