Work Text:

After finally finding him, Mikasa couldn’t help but feel relieved.

“Eren.” She called.

He wiped his tears off using his arm after hearing her voice.

She walked up to him, concern written on her face as she stood beside him to see what he was looking at.

“This is where…”

Mikasa looked at him—his face looking like he was scared and worried of something, averting her gaze from him.

They stayed staring at the place in front of them watching the people living there go back inside their perspective homes.

Eren then looked at her—his face showing yearning.

“Mikasa…”

She looked at him, her gray eyes meeting green ones that looked dull unlike before when they were younger.

“Why is… that you care so much about me?”

“Huh?” She asked, confused.

“Is it because I saved you back then?”

“Or is it because I'm family?”

He looked at her—face showing that he must be hurting from the burden he has, Mikasa feeling her heartache to see him like this.

“What am I… to you?”

She felt heat suddenly rush to her cheeks, her mouth slightly open from the shock of the sudden question—heart beating faster as she struggled to form syllables, trying to do her best to answer.

But her entire system is still processing the question.

“U-um…” She stuttered—looking at him in the eyes.

His eyes were starting to die down a bit like it’s almost giving up from waiting for her answer.

Mikasa gulped down her own pride.

‘Should I let my heart decide?’

She could see that he wants her to be true to not only him but to herself.

The tension was intensifying between them.

She took a deep breath and began again—breaking it;

“Y-you're… fam…”

His face changed—like he was disappointed?

Mikasa, seeing this, shook her head and immediately said something else;

“Y-you’re someone precious to me… someone... I love…”

This made Eren close his eyes—worries disappearing.

Relieved that she feels the same way he does, relieved that his worry about what she thinks about their relationship vanished.

He then opened his eyes and smiled a bit.

“I… see.”

Mikasa’s agitation eased a bit.

But what happened next was unexpected, leaving both of them in shock at her words.

“Eren… how about we run away together?”

'Why am I saying this?’

‘I should stop.’

But… what came out instead was.

“Let’s live your remaining days…”

He couldn’t believe what she said—his eyes widening at her words.

Mikasa let out a small gasp, her eyes wide.

“I don’t—”

Eren didn’t say a word and took her hand.

With him taking the lead, they both ran somewhere.

They kept running—not knowing what’s ahead of them in the night.

Mikasa tried to look back but Eren only told her not to and kept going.

They were… leaving everything behind?

They were running towards a path of selfishness.

‘Did he want this as well?’ She thought to herself as she took a glance at Eren who wasn’t looking back at all.

She opens her eyes to find Eren in front of her, eyes filled with concern.

“You might catch a cold.” He gently said.

Mikasa only looked at him, a small smile on her face as she nods—Eren fixing the wood they’ll use later.

“I don’t think we're supposed to be here.” She said sadly.

“Why… did we choose this selfish desire?”

He looked at her, brows furrowed as she brought it up again.

“Mikasa…” He said, standing up after finishing fixing the wood for later.

She looked at him, eyes widening a bit remembering what they promised not to do.

She stood up and hugged him.

“I'm sorry… I remembered we promised to never bring it up again…”

He only hugged her back.

“It’s alright…” He said as he caressed her hair gently.

Because they chose this.

Selfish as it may be and the guilt of the consequences of it.

The presence of one another is all they need to remind them that they have each other.

Both of them alone in a sequestered place.

Away from the problems and responsibilities.

Where they only continue to love each other.

Even if it won’t last forever.
