Work Text:

It was a peaceful day—the birds flying in the sky, the wind rushing by gently, the flora that sways along with the flow.

Eren was only sitting down on the flowered grass watching someone enjoy herself as they pick different kinds of flowers making something.

He couldn’t help but admire her, even if she was far away—he still thinks she’s beautiful and will always be.

She then called his name making him snap into reality as she was now in front of him.

Her hands were at her back as she looked at him, eyes filled with joy as she smiled.

“I made something.”

She then showed him two flower crowns and put one of them on top of his head—putting hers on afterward.

He only smiled a bit—seeing her smile despite her knowing that they will never be like this again.

But for him, it will always be his favorite memory he'll carry till death because he knows that he'll never see it again.

Mikasa sat down beside him and put her head on his shoulder as her eyes traveled at the sky watching two birds flying by.

The silence was tranquil—the only sound heard was the wind's gentle blows in the field.

They stayed like that for a few minutes when Eren looked down and said something which made Mikasa look up at him, her smile earlier diminishing.

“When I die… throw the scarf away.”

“Forget about me and be free.”

“Find somewhere else to stay and continue to live your life.”

She only looked at him—pained by what he wishes her to do after he dies.

She could feel that he—himself—is hurt by all his words.

“You'll live longer than me. Find someone you might even love, who will also love you back.”

She only looked down, as she forced herself a small smile—her decision uncertain.

Peaceful dawn as Mikasa watched the sunrise—the cool air touching her bare neck.

“Forget about me and be free.”

She still remembers what he told her to do.

Mikasa only smiled sadly and took the scarf out of her pocket and wrapped it around her neck—memories flooding of how he would be the most gentle person when it comes to her.

How he was doing almost everything for her.

How he spoiled her a lot—a memory that will always form a small smile on her face.

She glanced at the scarf around her neck and looked back to the peaceful rising of the sun—her hair swaying freely in the wind.

“I'm sorry… I can’t.” She muttered in her own breath as tears streamed down her face—along with a smile he would always love seeing in his years.

~~~
Because she chooses to stay.
She chooses to remember him.
Because as long as she lives, she’ll continue to love him.
She’ll live for him.
Just as how he taught her how to that day when they were young.
She'll cherish every memory they made and have them as her motivation to keep going.
No matter how many challenges life would bring.
Because right there, where she stays…
Is home.
