Back When Trees Would Never Decay

Summary:

A small character study of Quill

Title taken from Wilbur Soot's "The Squid Song"

Work Text:

“Quill,” Keeb asked, coming over to his friend. “Should we make a shop together?”

Quill smiled slightly. “Yeah! What kind?” He asked back, tail wagging.

“I was thinking of a half-and-half shop, I’d sell food on one half, and you sell ores and stuff on the other side?”

“Sure, I’ll make my side out of blackstone, maybe you use diorite? Checkerboard floor?”

“Hell yeah!”

It all faded away.

Quill sighed, sitting up in bed. Another night where he wished to wake up back in his world, but he was still in Kris’s house. It’s not that he didn’t appreciate his hospitality, hell, he made the best friends he could’ve ever asked for here, but... he wondered what his friends were doing. He had started to remember what Fuji had done to him, so the wolf felt an urgency to get back home. Who knows what he’d do if he didn’t.

Somebody knocked on his door. “Quill, breakfast is ready!” The small voice called. “I’ll be there in a minute, Vez.”

Quill stood up and put his hoodie on, keeping his normal pajama pants on. Blueberry chirped next to him and he uncovered his bird’s cage. “I’ll be back after breakfast, bud.” He promised, scritching his bird.

He walked downstairs and sat at his normal spot, between Orion and Cloud. Orion was rambling on to Kris about a ‘Bonnie’, while Cloud was talking to his stand, Moonchild. Quill finished eating quickly and went back upstairs, taking Blueberry out of his cage. He grabbed his music disc, Chirp, and put it in his jukebox, and listened as the bird danced on the jukebox. It served as a reminder he’d go back one day.

Sadly, he wasn’t the best coder, so he still couldn’t get his communicator fixed. The disc ended as his door opened. “Hey, got a sec?” Kris asked, pushing open the door. He was in his cat form. Huh.

“Yeah, what’s up?” He asked, putting Chirp back in the drawer. The Shapeshifter sat on the bed, ear twitching. “I think I might’ve found something to fix your communicator, but it’ll take quite a while.”

Quill froze, eyes widening. “Wait... really?!” He asked, jumping to his feet. Kris nodded. “Yep, found a guide. I presume this stuff happens sometimes, albeit rarely, so I can get Orion to help out with that. I know you expressed your... concerns for the people in your world, and if they’re in danger like you say they are, I decided to focus my studies there. You okay with tha-”

The wolf cut him off, hugging his friend. “Thank you. You have no clue how much this means to me.”
