Work Text:

It wasn’t meant to end this way with Kensi in hospital. It was meant to be a quick get in, get the perpetrators and get straight back out. The three of them had gotten to the abandoned warehouse where there was only meant to be three guys, all armed. When they arrived, there were over ten armed men, and they had to call for back up from LAPD.

One of the LAPD officers was Detective Martin Deeks, and he was getting ready to go home and pass out on the couch, waiting for his wife to get home so they could eat and go to bed together. All Deeks Knew about his wife’s job was that she worked for the government agency NCIS, but that was it; he didn’t know where she was based or the first names of the people she worked with. They met on a case 7 years ago when LAPD and NCIS worked together. They both fell almost instantly in love. After a year of dancing around each other and flirting on shared cases, Deeks finally asked Kensi on a date, and it was the best decision of his life as they both fell almost instantly in love. Two years after they started dating, Deeks proposed to Kensi to sit on their couch watching a film on a quiet night. They got married 6 months later, with just their parents as witnesses. They would be celebrating their 4th anniversary in a couple of months.

Just as he was getting his stuff together as a call came in saying that the local NCIS Team needed their help as there were more people in the warehouse than they were prepared for. As soon as he heard that, he was loading his gun and badge and getting ready to go, with one person in mind, Agent Kensi Blye.

After everyone was prepared and had been briefed by the NCIS team, Kensi and Deeks sent subtle looks towards each other, telling the other person to be careful, that they loved each other, and they would see each other there the other side. The next hour was a blur to everyone involved as they managed to arrest all the bad guys. The next thing Deeks remember was hearing that there was an agent down and seeing two NCIS agents get into the back of an ambulance, neither of which was Kensi. This meant that his wife was on the gurney. Deeks blood ran cold the moment he figured this out.

An hour and a half later, Kensi was out of surgery at the hospital, and they were still waiting for her to wake up. Sam Hanna and G Callen were waiting in her room, taking turns to keep watch and sit by her bedside; they had promised Hetty that they would stay till Kensi woke up. As they sat there in silence thinking about what went wrong with the mission for it to end in this situation, they were meant to have each other’s backs, and both felt like they had failed Kensi, even though they knew that Kensi would kick both their asses if she knew they were feeling this way. A little while later, the doctor came in with the latest blood test results.

“The results of the test came back, and your friend has raised HCG levels, but apart from that, everything is looking normal,” The doctor told them.

“What does that mean, and is that a good or bad thing,” Callen asked, concerned about his friend and co-worker.

“Whilst it does complicate things slightly, it's not a bad thing. A raised HCG level means that Ms Blye is pregnant,” he announced.

“pregnant”, they both exclaimed at the same time.

“yes, it appears so. Do you have any idea who the father could be?” The doctor asked, “they really should be here if possible”.

“No, as far as we knew, she wasn’t seeing anyone; it could have been a one-night stand, anyway, thanks Doc” Sam answered as Callen was still a little shocked.

“No problem, now if you could just wait outside whilst we do some checks, I’ll let you know when they're done.” The doctor asked.

“Yep, well go and get some coffee from the canteen while we wait”, Callen replied, and they both left the doctor and nurses to it.

Whilst Callen and Sam were in the canteen; Deeks had finally finished his paperwork, been debriefed and made it through LA traffic and had gotten to the hospital. He asked the lady at reception where Kensi was. After a few, in Deeks’ opinion, unnecessary and annoying questions, she pointed him in the direction of his wife’s room with the promise that the doctor will be in shortly. Deeks was glad to see that Kensi’s co-workers weren’t in the room as he wasn’t mentally prepared to meet them just yet; he just wanted to see his wife. As soon as he entered the room, he saw that she was still asleep. He rushed to her side, grabbed hold of her hand and kissed her forehead.

“Oh Fern, what happened to you” Deeks whispered, not expecting a reply.

Roughly 10 minutes later, Deeks time alone with Kensi was interrupted by someone clearing their throat behind him; when he looked up, he saw two men, who in any other situation he would have been intimidated, but right now, all he could think about was the woman lying in bed in front of him who had yet to wake up.

“Excuse me,” Callen asked confidently, both him and Sam reaching for their guns just in case, “who are you and what are you doing in Kinesis room.”

“Martin Deeks”, Deeks replied, holding up his LAPD ID badge, “I’m a Detective with the LAPD; I’m also Kensi’s Husband.”

“you're what,” Sam asked seriously.

“But Kensi has never mentioned you or the fact that she Is married,” Callen said, confused.

“yeah, we got married nearly 4 years ago; we decided to keep it a secret because of our jobs,” Deeks explained.

“Right,” Sam said warily of the new guy and still trying to comprehend the news he’s just learnt.

“So, what’s the info about Kensi’s condition,” Deeks asked, concerned.

“She had to go for surgery to stop a ruptured spleen caused the internal bleeding, which they found out, so they obviously took that out. She’s been out since we got here about an hour and a half ago; we are just waiting for her to wake up now.” Callen informed him.

“Oh, and we Just found out…” Sam started but was interrupted when Kensi’s Hand started to twitch in Deeks.

“Kensi, Kensalina, wake up, Princess”, Deeks spoke softly to a waking Kensi.

Callen watched silently whilst Sam went to fetch the doctor. He watched Deeks with Kensi as she started to come too. He watched as he coaxed her through waking up by talking gently and whispering to her; he just wanted to make sure that the woman that he thought of as a sister was being treated well.

When the doctor came In, he introduced himself to both Kensi and Deeks and explained fully what medical procedures had happened and the tests' result.

“The results of the routine blood tests that we took came back all normal apart from the HGC levels are raised,” the doctor told them.

“Raised HGC, that means I’m pregnant, right” Kensi questioned.

“That’s correct”, the doctor confirmed, “Once we have you settled, we will do a scan so you both can see the baby”.

“Did you hear that Fern; we are going to have a baby,” Deeks said, still trying to process the news.

“That explains a lot; I thought something was off for the last couple of days, and I was going to buy a test tonight and take it with you”, Kensi explained.

After the scan, questions were asked and answered the doctor left them to it. Half an hour later, Callen and Sam left Kensi and Deeks, saying they needed to report everything back to the team and update them on how Kensi was doing. Once they were on their own, Kensi and Deeks talked about the future and their plans for once the baby arrived till Kensi fell asleep. As she slept, Deeks promised to always be there for her through everything.
