Chapter Text

11:51 pm

George was sitting at his desk, wrapped in his favorite blanket- the one his grandma had made him 11 years ago for his 9th birthday. It was old and tattered in a few places, but it was one of the things in life that made George feel safe. The led lights that hung messily along the edges of the ceiling were casting a blue hue around his room, and his little cat was curled up on his bed, sleeping peacefully. He was sitting in a call with his friends Clay and Nick, awaiting his 20th birthday.

The birthday that would change everything.

“So Gogy, are you nervous to see your soulmate for the first time?” Nick asked him teasingly.

George paused for a moment before speaking. “Sort of. I mean i’m more nervous about what i’ll do when I wake up.”

Clay spoke up for the first time in awhile. “What do you mean George?” he asked puzzled.

“Well, whoever pops up in my head tonight is my soulmate- which is why i’m not scared about who will be there. But I am worried about what I will do when I wake up because what if I don’t know them? What if they live halfway across the world and I never get to see them in real life? What if I spend my entire life searching for someone that doesn’t want to be found?” George replies.

“Hey George, don’t worry about that. I mean I've been having the dreams for around 4 months now and I don’t think I've ever seen anybody even close to my soulmate. Plus, it took my parents 4 years to find each other. For some it takes even longer. Just get excited- you get to see your soulmate for the first time tonight!” Clay replied reassuringly.

“Yeah George, stop being the party pooper on your own birthday,” Nick added in a joking tone.

“Hey, it’s not my birthday yet- there’s still,” George squinted down at the little clock in the corner of his monitor “3 minutes left!”

“AAAAHHH I’M SO EXCITED!! My little Georgie is growing up so fast,” Nick said.

George rolled his eyes at this. Nick, or as he often went by online, Sapnap, could be so dramatic at times. He was one of his best friends though. “Alright sippy cup, spare me the dramatics. Are both of you still down to be on my birthday stream tommorow?”

Dream spoke up, “Yeah! I have set up something super special on the server and I think it’ll be really fun.”

“Okay yeah, thanks Clay I'm looking forward to it. Oh guys! There’s a minute left!”

“Come on Clay! We have to start counting down!” Nick yelled enthusiastically.

“Okay okay… let’s do this thing,” Clay replied.

“10!”
“9!”
“8!”
George took a deep breath and smiled. He was so grateful for his best friends, and he was so excited to meet his soulmate.
“7!”
“6!”
“5!”
“4!”
“3!’
George braced himself to blow out the candle he had stuck into a cupcake and lit moments before.
“2!”
“1!”
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY GOGY!!” Clay and Nick cried out as George blew out the candle.

“GEORGE! How do you feel? Like a changed man?” Sapnap asked laughing.

“Uhhh, no snap map sorry. I feel the same as I did a minute ago.” George said with a giggle.

“Okay, fine. Well what are you waiting for? Go to sleep you nimrod! I’m leaving right now. Night night Gogy!” Sapnap yelled before abruptly leaving the call.

Dream sighed and said, “Woah. Imagine living with that guy. Couldn’t be me!”

George laughed and replied, “Hey, at least you get to see his stupid face every day.”

“That’s true. Nick was right though George, aren’t you anxious to get to bed and see your soUlmAte?” Clay asked with a joking tone.

“Well yes… I’m just a bit nervous, that’s all,” George confessed sheepishly.

“George, you are an amazing person and i’m sure that whoever shows up in your dreams tonight will be just as cute as you are.” Clay replied- you could hear the smirk in his voice.

“CLAY! How can you even say that, you haven’t even seen my face!” George could feel his face heating up at Clay’s bold words.

“I don’t know Georgie!”

“You're just as bad as Nick! You know what, I am going to bed!”

Clay laughed. “Okay, happy birthday George. Sweet dreams.”

“Thank you Clay.”

“GO GET EM TIGER!” Clay yelled with a laugh before leaving the call.

George rolled his eyes with a smile. God, Clay always knew how to get under his skin. He got up out of the comfy chair and stretched, hearing satisfying cracks. He went to the bathroom to brush his teeth, then came back and went over to his bed. He watched his cat slowly stir as he sat down apprehensively. She purred before shutting her eyes again, falling into a deep sleep.

George knew that his sleep wouldn’t come as easily.

As George got under his covers, he tried to settle down his mind so he could fall asleep. He found all his attempts to be unsuccessful, however. Like a young child the night before Christmas day, he was too busy pondering the possibilities to fall asleep.

He laid there for a while, just too excited to fall asleep. He thought back to Clay’s words.

“i’m sure that whoever shows up in your dreams tonight will be just as cute as you are.”

‘How can he just say that?’ George thought to himself. Clay’s little flirtatious remarks had always affected him in a certain way, making his cheeks turn red and the butterflies in his stomach turn.

He slowly drifted off into dreamland. His last coherent thought was one about Clay’s stupidly adorable laugh.

------------

When George’s eyes opened up, he found himself in a car, an old pickup truck to be exact. He was driving on a deserted highway, with beautiful fields of flowers surrounding the truck on either side. Above them was a dark sky filled with the brightest stars that George had even seen.

And then he saw him.

A young man, sitting behind the wheel, drumming his long fingers on the steering wheel to the beat of the song playing on the radio.

Take me to your best friend's house, going round this roundabout, oh yeah…

He was beautiful.

His face was illuminated by the moonlight shining through the windows. There were light freckles dotted across the bridge of his nose, around his eyes, his hairline, his cheekbones.

George wanted to kiss every single one.

His dirty blonde hair was getting messed up by the wind blowing in, getting into his face as he drove them down the highway.

George wanted to lace his fingers into the soft hair and tug.

He was wearing a simple green hoodie, and black jeans. George could swear that he saw tiny, sparkly studs in his ears.

George wanted- oh.

The stranger- no, his soulmate- looked over for the first time and George watched as his mouth split into a wide smile, showing off his adorable dimples.

George was… in awe. His soulmate was breathtaking.

Moments later his eyes returned to the road as he turned off the highway and pulled them into a large field. Lightning bugs were lazily floating through the air, lighting up the pretty meadow.

The dream boy got out of the truck and walked over to the passenger side. George turned as he opened the door and hesitantly held out his hand, waiting for George to join him.

Take me to your best friend's house, I loved you then and I love you now…

George took his hand and let him lead him out into the field. Dream motioned for him to stop, then quickly ran back to the truck to turn up the radio.

The boy ran back to George and took his hands. They started spinning and running around, both wearing faces full of glee.

Don't leave me tongue tied, don't wave no goodbye.
Don't leave me tongue tied,

don't…

As the song ended, the dream boy pulled George down into the fluffy grass. When he looked up, he was met with an image of the stars, millions of them shining brightly above his head.

When he turned his head, he saw the boy staring at him with a beautiful smile on his face, and freckles as plentiful as the stars.

George couldn’t help but smile and blush. He was still holding the dream boy’s hand.

‘I think… i’ll just start calling him dream,’ George thought before slowly drifting away.
