Work Text:

“Red is your favorite color, right?” Tendou asked his boyfriend the first night they hung out together at Ushijima’s place.

“Yes.” Ushijima confirmed as he pet his pet bunny.

“Your bunny’s cute.” Tendou commented.

“Her name is Snowball. I really like her” Ushijima said.

They’d been dating for a month now and things were going very smoothly. They respected boundaries, listened to each other, and hung out/went on dates at least once a week.

Tendou was super happy that someone actually liked him back. He pulled Ushijima aside one day after volleyball practice. He was so nervous but managed to make proper sentences as he asked Ushijima to be his boyfriend.

Ushijima wasn’t sure exactly what to do as a boyfriend but wanted to make Tendou happy. He did ask help from Semi and hopes to be the best boyfriend in the world for the red head.

Once their three month anniversary was around the corner, Tendou wanted to do something special. He had a week to think and prepare a nice present for Ushijima.

“Flowers and chocolate are too basic.” Tendou told Shirabu and Goshiki.

“True, and you don’t do basic things.” They all laughed at Shirabu’s comment.

“You want something unique and represents you. Something he won’t forget. Something handmade?” Goshiki suggested.

“Definitely something handmade.” Tendou nodded his head.

“Well, you're into crafts like painting, right?” Shirabu questioned.

“Yeah. I like paper marches, painting, and sometimes I like to tie dye.” Tendou confirmed.

“Then just do something like that.” They all agreed and Tendou went back home to think.

He laid in bed as he thought about all Ushijima’s likes and favorites.

He had a mental list of a couple things.

  • Red
  • Snowball
  • Fall
  • Walks in the woods
  • Family
  • Volleyball
  • Me, Satori Tendou

Tendou chuckled as he thought of the last one.

He wouldn’t be able to paint everything because he still wanted something big and unforgettable.

He then got an idea and giggled at the thought.

He’d have to sneak into Ushijima’s house for a couple items but it’d be worth it.

It wasn’t.

In the end it wasn’t worth it.

He went inside the house, grabbed Snowball and then went out to the woods near Ushijima’s place. He made a circle of sticks on the dirt floor and then looked at Snowball.

“I’m sorry, this may hurt.” He apologized and took out his pocket knife.

After ten minutes the bunny’s fur was dyed red.

He texted Ushijima where to meet him and waited twenty minutes as he set up a picnic near his hand made art.

When Ushijima arrived, he was confused. Why’d Tendou text him to come to the woods?

Ushijima walked over and stood over the dead bunny and cried silently in sadness, frustration, anger, and confusion.

Tendou noticed the tears and began to worry.

“What’s wrong?” Silence followed the question.

“H-hey, don’t cry. I made this art for you. Don’t you like it?” He frowned when met with silence again.

“I thought… red is your favorite color, right?”
