Chapter 1: The sun clouded

Chapter Text

It had been a long day, Kel only slept for an hour when he heard crying from Basil's room. When he stepped in to investigate, he saw his older brother cradling Sunny, holding his left eye. And Basil laid next to them unconscious, covered in scratches along with one black eye.

"What... what happened-" Kel asked nervously, watching as Hero looked up at him. Kel could see in his brother's eyes that he was struggling to hold backan onslaught of tears. His throat began to hurt.

"I- I don't know.. I'll go get Polly!!", Hero dashed out of the room as he spoke. Kel stood there, unsure of what to do in that moment. He did not want to wake Aubrey up in some preemptive fear she'd attack him upon suddenly awakening her.

Kel stood there, not wanting to wake Aubrey up yet in some preemptive fear she'd attack him upon waking her suddenly. He chuckled at the thought briefly, getting his mind off of events. Then Polly rushed into the room.

"O-oh! Oh my!!", she covered her mouth in shock, unsure of how to react.

"I- I already called for an ambulance, it should arrive here soon." Hero said in a loud and shaky voice. As soon as he said that a loud yell tore through the house.

"WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED? WHAT DID THEY DO? DID THEY FIGHT OR SOMETHING?" Aubrey roared, dashing into the room looking mortified at the scene. She was visibly shaking, trying to process everything before her.

The sound of sirens from ambulance approached in the distance. With a sound the whole group was stunned into silence. The gravity of the situation was sinking.

The hospital was quiet except for the squeaking and rattling of wheels of stretchers and hurried footsteps passing by. Basil and Sunny had been put into separate rooms. Basil was the first to awaken, prompting Kel and friends to gather at his side. Eagerly awaiting for an explanation of the events that occurred not too long ago. At this point they wanted to know what the hell happened. They were doing so well Kel thought sadly Why did this have to happen?

Basil quietly looked down, avoiding looking at his friend's gaze with his eyes red from pent up tears. Aubrey was the first one to break the heavy silence.

"Basil. Are you going to... explain this crap? W-why did you do this to Sunny? How? You're not the strongest person, how tHE FUCK DID YOU TAKE HIS EYE!?" she began to cry violently, it pained Kel to see his friends like this.

Kel made a soft a sigh and tried to lower the tension, "Aubrey- calm down please.... You know he's been through a lot these past few days-"

Aubrey wheeled around immediately with tears in her eyes, "shut, the fuck UP--"

Hero had cleared his throat and cut her off, "Basil, can you please explain?" he asked in a gentler tone, but his voice was still shaky. It was subtle, but it told Kel that his brother was still hurting from earlier events.

At first, all Basil could do was cry, he couldn't form a single word for a little while but then he mustered the will to utter a sentence,

"I.... I'm so sorry... i-it was all an a-accident, I had only wanted to protect him..." Aubrey interjected, "What do you mean protect him." her voice raised as she said that, her fist clenching tightly at her side. Kel noted that her knuckles were turning white and instinctively held her back from in order to prevent potential violence.

Basil stammered nervously "Ah... uh the night of the recital... I... when Mari..... i-it was an accident... Sunny. H-he didn't mean to!! He didn't mean to push her!!" A stunned silence swept over them, only the sound was Basil sobbing.

"Basil... what do you mean by pushed...?" Hero asked with worry washed over his face. Basil took a deep breath and continued, "I-it was my fault... it was all my idea.... to hide it. To cover it up.... I did it ... as you know to protect him..." Basil went silent.

Aubrey relaxed and slumped to the floor, silent tears fell from her face onto the cold linoleum floor. At that point Kel let go of Aubrey's arm, it hung limply at her side all anger had diminished. Hero blankly stared at Basil who was breathing heavily in an attempt to calm down. The uncomfortable silence had fallen on them again. Kel inhaled sharply, unable to fully take in what he heard.

"I.. I'm gonna uh. Take a quick walk."

Kel couldn't conjure up his happy and carefree self, even if he could it wouldn't of felt right. As he closed the door to Basil's room he felt alone. The only thing he thought to do was check on Sunny, perhaps he had woken up by now. It was dead silent. Too quiet.

Kel slowly opened the door to Sunny's room, the door creaking uncomfortably loud.

He was gone.

The bed was empty, the sheets had been hastily tossed aside and the IV dangled on the floor. Kel's heart sank in fear. He ran out of the room, he needed to get out of there. Trying to think about the situation only made his head hurt. He frantically made his way to the hospital exit, perhaps the outdoor air would calm his nerves.

Kel looked up at the sky, it was a nice and sunny day outside. It was beautiful outside despite everything that had happened so far. Then he saw it.

Something was falling. It was as if the sun itself fell from the sky. It happened so fast the next thing Kel knew, there was a sickening crack. The sound of bones shattering and the splatter of blood. It was a body. It was--

Oh God.

The world felt heavy, Kel's legs couldn't hold him up anymore. He fell onto his knees looking at the lifeless mess in front of him. It took him a while to process what he was really looking at but it was undeniable. It was--

"SUNNY!!!! NO! N-no no no!! This can't be happening- why.." Kel screamed and felt his spine collapse. His face buried into his hands. Tears were streaming onto the pavement, mixing into the some of the blood below. Kel muttered endless apologies with hiccups interrupting an 'I'm so sorry' every minute or so. He felt nauseous. The world felt muffled in that moment, the sounds of people could barely be made out.

He felt a hand grab his arm and pull him into a tight hug. It took him a while to register what was happening until he heard a voice snap him back to reality

"KEL! Kel! What happened! Please!"

It was Hero, fresh tears were streaming his face too. Hero had saw the mangled body behind Kel. It didn't take long for Hero to put two and two together. Still holding Kel he slumped to the ground. Both brothers were holding each other tightly and crying at the sight. Aubrey rushed out shortly after.

"W-what happened now?!"

Her face was puffy red, she wasn't angry just scared. Just confused. Hero looked up at her, trying to muster a calm tone.

"A-aubrey.. I don't think you should see this... I am sorry..."

Doctors swarmed out of the hospital, pushing Aubrey away and ushering the brothers to back off.

Sunny was gone. All the was left now was what stained in front of the hospital. The sun had set.
