a boy and a boy

Summary:

let me tell you a story...

Work Text:

When I was younger I knew a boy and a boy

“Dream, stop it, you said you would help this time!”

“Yeah well I guess I lied”

Dream continued to destroy the build he had promised to help George with while George protested.

“If you wanted my help you shouldn’t have called me at 4 in the morning”

“How was I supposed to know it was 4am??”

George looked over at his monitor as he realised it really was 4am in Florida.

“I don’t know we’ve only been friends for years”

Best friends with each other

“I swear to god if you don’t put down that sword I will hurt you”

“You’ll have to catch me first”

“Oh it’s ON”

But always wished they were more

Dream didn’t know when it had started, when the last night calls turned to early mornings and the jokes became too serious for just pretending.

Dream didn’t know how someone could be at the other end of a discord call and in the other side of the Atlantic. It was both agonisingly close and heart wrenchingly too far.

Dream could change everything with one call.

It would only take one call.

But Dream never did.

'Cause they loved one another

George wished it hadn’t started. George wished he could find the line that had been obliterated between them. He didn’t want to be confused. He didn’t want to not be able to decipher what Dream was trying to explain.

Whether the inflection in his voice had been because of a forbidden emotion or because of the fact it was so late, or so early, George didn’t know anymore.

George wished he had the strength to find the line. To desperately claw at it until it was pulled so far from where he couldn’t understand that him and Dream might even be strangers

But never discovered

Dream never made that call.

George sat and wished he had the strength to.

'Cause they were too afraid of what they'd say

How could you take a leap of faith if you didn’t know how far you’d fall.

It could ruin them, take all of what they worked so hard for and shatter it right down to the ground.

Dream likes the way it looks when glass shatters, the chaos and confusion, the unpredictability. He would gladly watch his world shatter if it meant being able to see George on the other side.

George couldn’t watch Dream’s world shatter. A world he worked so hard for, for so long. Even if he sat smiling at him from the other side. George couldn’t do that to Dream. He didn’t deserve it. He deserved better.

Dream made the call.

George didn’t answer.

Moved to different states

George wasn’t answering Dream’s calls.

Had he done something wrong?

Did he step too far?

“George I’ve been calling you for weeks what happened?”

”What do you want Dream?”

”Well I, I need to tell you something,”

“Don’t”

“Wha-“

“Whatever you need to say don’t say it, I already know”

“Bu-“

“Clay, don’t. You can’t give it up, not for me”

George never cried as much as he did that night. Curled into a ball, imagining what could have been, if he had been strong enough to face it.

Dream didn’t cry. He was numb as he sat at his desk imagining what could have been, if he didn’t call.

That’s just the way the world works
