Work Header

Just for tonight

Summary:

Farah Dowling is worried about Bloom and the entire world, her fears are taking the best out of her, but there are someone's arms who can make her feel safe.

Notes:

hello there! I must say I'm super excited to be posting this work as this is my first one shot written in English ever! As you know, English is not my first language and I do not have a beta reader, so you are to find some mistakes. I think like the characters sound a bir out of character but I wanted to explore more feelings and possible scenarios and relationships and mixing winx club and fate: the winx saga ended up with all this mess in my hands, but I love it and feel proud about it anyway.

I was so desperate for some hurt/comfort between them, I just could not help myself. Farah has been strong for so long and bottled up all her feelings, it wouldn't take long for her to have a breakdown, and there's only one person she'd allow to see her like that.

Anyway I hope you enjoy it.

* Griffin is portrayed by Michelle Gomez

I might or might not write a second chapter with them talking to Bloom. I won't promise though.

Work Text:

It had been a very long and tiring day, filled with training and classes and Farah was over the edge. Those were very hard days since the Burned Ones’ attack just a few days before, and now with Rosalind being free and gone, with no clue of where she was or what she was up to, Beatrix causing one problem after another and Queen Luna no longer being a trusted ally, were only half the problems that Farah was currently facing, knowing very well that what was to come was way worse.
She reached for her suite as soon as the last class finished, took her shoes off, and gasped out of relief, she hanged her long coat behind the door, let her dark blond hair free of the tight bun and let it messily spread over her shoulders, and then, started to undo the buttons of her blue shirt slowly when suddenly she was hit by a warm and familiar feeling of magic brushing against her own, magic that she very well knew and recognized, a feeling of protection and safety, comfort and memories that only one person could cause on her, it was Griffin. Farah was so lost in her feelings and worries that didn’t realize she was being watched this whole time.
“Don’t let me stop you.” Griffin smirked and with a twist of her hand, she undid the illusion spell and let herself be seen, seated at the end of Farah’s bed, legs crossed and chin up, the golden bright eyes as deep and mysterious as always.
“I told you that you should not have come.” Farah answered with a sigh, closing her eyes softly, avoiding Griffin’s malicious comment and immediately worrying about her safety, knowing what means to hide a witch in a kingdom where witches were banished and are hunted down by the Queen’s army.
“Did you really think I was going to listen? If she is our Bloom, I should be here by her side like we promised Orithel and Marion we would.” Griffin's eyes were filled with anticipation and eagerness as she stared into the fairy’s eyes looking for the understanding gaze she knew she would find, and she did, Farah remembered very well the promise they both made to their best friend when the war was above them sixteen years ago and that costed their very own lives.
“If Rosalind or Luna find out you are here-” There was genuine fear in Farah’s eyes, she knew what they were capable of and that would stop at nothing just like years ago. She would never forgive herself if something happened to Griffin because of her, even though the witch knew quite well how to defend herself, but she did have the talent of getting herself in trouble for her very sharp tongue.
“Well, those two bitches can fuck themselves.” Griffin rolled her eyes as she got up from the bed and that made Farah fall into laughter, oh dragons how she missed this witch, these are not the circumstances in which she expected to be seeing Griffin, but she was thankful that they got another chance to meet after so long, life was constantly pushing them apart and they have been through so much already.
“I’ve missed you.” Farah confessed, starring into the golden eyes like they could see through her like the witch could stare deep into the fairy’s soul and see who she really was behind all those walls she had built around herself like she was naked and all her scars could be seeing, but that did not matter, it never did, she felt safe, and Griffin knew how lucky she was to see Farah at her worst and be there to hold her tight.
“I have missed you too.” The witch smiled softly, a single drop of tear almost daring to form over her eye, which she refused to let roll down her face, the damned fairy who got her into this mix of feelings and the hurtful pain of being gone for so long, her whole body ached, needing to be close to the fairy’s, to touch her, to feel more of her magic brushing against her own like they’ve known each other forever like this was not the first life they have met.
“Then kiss me already.” Farah murmured and begged as her life depended on it, her voice was so low like it seemed was about to break, like she just needed the witch arms around her or she would fall weak to her knees, and she did not have to ask twice, the witch cupped the fairy’s cheek with her cold hand and felt Farah shiver under her touch, the same shiver she felt in her own body as well, they could feel each other’s breath hitting their faces because they were already so close, eyes closing and noses brushing as their lips when they finally met again.
The fairy’s lips parted to welcome the witch’s, tasting them once more, feeling the warmth of her tongue intertwined with Griffin’s, remembering her of the day of their very first kiss, so needy, so desperate, so passionate, like they have been holding on forever, like no closeness was enough, breathing was the last of the things they were worried about in that exact moment, she could only care about the hands wrapping around her body, the hands touching her skin and holding her close and tight, breasts brushing against breasts, the wet kisses on her throat followed by little moans as she held Griffin’s face to look herself in the eyes before devouring her mouth once more until they couldn’t help but stop to recover their breath, and just stay silent while hugging tight one another, no words were needed, no gestures, just them and the silent floating above their heads, they knew each other too well and just by being together felt like healing, like power, like love and safety, felt like home, and no one or anything could take away these away from them.

After a long and hot shower, Farah returned dressed in one of her nightgowns and found Griffin pouring some liquid into two cups before seating on one side of the couch, crossing her legs and pulling a blanket over them while making room for the fairy.
“I hope you don’t mind that I boiled some tea.” The witch said while taking a sip of her cup, appreciating the smell and taste it had, this was one of the many things she and Farah and she had in common and she thought they could really use some tea for the long talk that was ahead of them, not seeing each other in months meant that they had tons of talks to catch up on.
“Not at all. You make the best teas.” Farah grabbed her cup and found her place on the sofa, her eyes wandering around the room, feeling lost and worried, they have so much on their hands this time, she does not even know where to start, so many things happened and changed in a matter of days, a week ago she didn’t even know the Burned Ones were back after so long.
“You know you don’t have to drown yourself alone in all these, right? You are not alone, you got me, Ben, and Saul, and we make a great time, saying the least.” Griffin realized Farah’s sad gaze and called her out of her thoughts, making her laugh with the memories of when they were young and would be the most chaotic teenagers ever, getting themselves in trouble all the time, but at the same time always getting each other’s back no matter what, they’ve built the purest and strongest friendship based on loyalty and trust, they’ve faced some of their worst wars together and made it out alive, hopefully, they would succeed this time as well and will be cheering and drinking to celebrate like they always did.
“I know, it’s just- we aren’t that young anymore, I have a school full of unprepared teenagers to protect, an enemy that is out there seeking her revenge, Bloom who is just so lost and out of control, I’m so tired.” The fairy kept on starring at the yellow boiling liquid inside of her cup as it was the most interesting thing right now. Keeping up a façade of a strong and powerful headmistress was tiring her while behind it she was exhausted and breaking down, feeling scared and insecure as if she could not hold everything together and manage to have everything under control.
“You are doing the best you can, and you know that is more than enough, and speak for yourself, I’m still young and beautiful.” Griffin made another attempted to make her fairy laugh and succeeded, feeling proud of herself for that, it just breaks her heart seeing Farah who is always so cheerful and positive and full of light being so sad and darkened. She would do everything in her power to be there for whatever Farah needed, to be the arms to catch her to not let her fall, just like Farah did to Griffin when she went through her dark times, they were together in this.
“So, tell me about Bloom, how is she, how she looks, she was so young and little when I first held her in my arms.” Griffin reached for Farah’s free hand and squeezed to reaffirm to her that it was okay and that she was no leaving again anytime soon.
“She’s just like them, as stubborn as her father but kind and strong as her mother, she also got her red hair.” The fairy smiled softly and lowered her gaze to her hand which was intertwined with Griffin’s. “She’s been on Earth this whole time, she was raised by a kind human couple, I was only able to track her down when we sensed a strong sign of magic coming from Earth when no magic was supposed to exist there anymore, and that I found out it was Bloom.”
“Earth?! How were they able to sneak her there without anyone noticing, not even the Ancestral Witches? Even we thought she was dead. But, well, at least she was safe there for all that time, until now, I suppose it was when she found out she was no ordinary human girl and that she had powers?” Griffin asking trying to connect the dots and make some sense out of it, Farah nodded to confirm that that was exactly what happened. “How did you get her to come with you, you could not have just spilled all on her the first time you found her.”
“Yes, you are right, she was so lost and clueless of everything, the least I could to do get her to trust me and to bring her here, to what I thought was a safer place, was to promise her she’d learn how to control her powers so she would not hurt anyone anymore, so she accepted and we told her Earth parents that Alfea was a boarding school, and that was it, everything seemed to go smoothly until the Burned Ones started to appear and she realized that there was more of her past then what she was told, but she was not ready for the truth just yet.” Farah sighed and closed her eyes for a moment, as if trying to see if there was a missing piece to all these, or if it was all her fault at some point, that she was failing her promise to protect and guide Bloom when she thought what she was doing was the right thing, but hiding the truth for her only made things worse, that is why Rosalind was now free.
“Poor thing, I can’t imagine what she had to deal with, at least she’s here now and she gets to learn how to use her magic, if only she knew how powerful she really is, what she’s capable of. Bloom is the last hair to the Domino’s throne, even though there’s nothing left of it, it’s destroyed like it never existed. You were right to keep all from her but now it’s the time, whatever we are facing, she needs to be ready.” It pained Griffin to say all those words out loud, it pained her to remember the loss of her dear friends, whom she trusted with her life, who accepted her the way she was, and poor Bloom, she could not imagine what the lost princess was going through.
“I think of them every day, they gave their lives to save us so we could be here today, I cannot let them down, we must protect Bloom, she’s our only chance of winning this war, otherwise their sacrifice will be in vain.” Faragonda sighed deeply and Griffin answered with another gentle but firm squeeze in her hand, to let her know she understood just as just, she knew what it meant for both of them.
“We should go to bed, we can talk with Bloom tomorrow, you don’t have to do that alone. Now, come, you need to rest.” Griffin got up and offered her hand gently which Farah softly grabbed, letting the witch guide her to her bed, she could not protest, she wanted to do something now, to go outside and fight, find Rosalind and make her pay, slap Queen Luna on her face, but she couldn’t, her body failed her, she was tired, drained, her mind was a mess and right now she didn’t want to let go of Griffin’s closeness, she needed to allow herself some love and rest, to feel safe in such uncertain times, she didn’t need to say anything else, she didn’t have to, Griffin was able to read through her, she knew the fairy better than herself, knew how she used to pretend she was okay when her world was breaking down, but she was there for her, and in the silence of that cold night, for once Farah wouldn’t have to worry.
They laid on the bed and Griffin brought the fairy into her arms, letting her chin rest above Farah’s head while she gently caressed the blond woman’s back, bringing her even closer into her warm embrace, whispering sweet lullabies close to her ear, periodically telling her some joke, trouble she got herself into or stupid stories she heard about Ben and Saul that she knew would make Faragonda laugh, making her forget her problems and worries at least for tonight.
“What about your two dork friends.” Griffin smirked and Farah took some distance so she could look at her in the eyes with a serious look, holding herself not to laugh. “What have they been up to other than drinking and being chaotic?”
“Is that your way to show how you miss and worry about them?” Farah laughed as Griffin rolled her eyes and tickled Farah on her belly.
“Nah, they are too boring.” The witch answered wanting to sound like she did not care about it, but she did, and Farah knew.
“They are good, holding up as they can. I don’t’ know where I would have been without them.” Farah smiled softly as she lowered her gaze, going back to stare at her hand with Griffin’s.
“Do you remember that school party, like many, many years ago, which we all went together and Ben drank too much and started lecturing us about his newest potion discoveries and you were the only one who didn’t have the heart to not listen to him? You’re such a good friend while Saul and I were bursting into tears of how much we were laughing.” Griffin kissed Farah’s forehead before starring to the ceiling while her memories were playing on repeat when she realized Farah did the same.
“You two are so mean, it wasn’t even that boring.” Farah rolled her eyes and laughed, remembering quite well that day, Ben would hug her and tell her how cool was that metamorphosis the plants had to go through before being ready for a potion, and well, that was a good day indeed for Ben, a common friend of them, Rose was her name, found that to be as interesting as he thought it was and it was Farah’s time to go back to her girlfriend and let another someone watch out for him, little did they know Ben and Rose would be a thing one day, the way he was so passionate about things was the most special thing for Rose, Farah could not be happier for them.
“Well at least it wasn’t as boring as winning nonstop from Saul at 8 balls, he is terrible at that. Poor thing.” Griffin made a dramatic voice and sniffed intentionally, purely for drama.
“Was he really that bad or were you using magic? Hm?” Farah said accusing her and just laughed, she knew her very well to know that she hated losing and rarely would play fair in games, especially if that meant to tease either Ben or Saul into thinking they couldn’t beat her.
“I would NEVER.” The witch said with her free hand over her heart like she was hurt by the accusation when she knew very well it was true, not that the boys would ever get to know about that, or that she would stop doing that.
“I do remember that party for other things as well, it was the first time we went out as a couple, All the other students were staring at us like it was the most unexpected thing ever.” Farah closes her eyes like she could sense all the emotions from that day and would grab into them for as long as she could, she missed her student years when all she needed to worry about was keeping up her good grades and getting her friends out of the mess they made themselves.
“Well, we couldn’t help being the most famous group and the most powerful couple to ever walk on Alfea.” The witch said proudly, she didn’t have to look at Farah to know she was laughing at her comment. “I wanted everyone to know I was the lucky one to be chosen by the most strong and feared fairy”
“Always flirty, uh? You never miss a chance to pick on me even though we have been married for decades.” Farah laughed a bit and cleaned a dried laughter tear from her cheek, going back to lock gazes with Griffin while she would play with her blond hair, making her sleepy.
“I can’t help being so hot and fascinating, you can’t resist.” Griffin smiled while bringing the fairy’s free hand to her lips so she could kiss her finger before bringing them to her chest.
“I love you.” Those words fell from the fairies lips in a sweet and low voice, only loud enough so Griffin could hear it. The witch knew it meant more than just that, it also meant a thank you, a I’m glad you’re here, a I can’t lose you, and she would never, because Griffin planned on never leaving her side ever again.
“I love you more.” Griffin whispered back and watched as the fairy closed her eyes, letting the tiredness take over her and allowing herself to finally sleep and have a long night of well-rested sleep, knowing no hurt would come to her, knowing she was in the only place in the world she wanted to be, in the arms of her beloved, and just for tonight, she allowed herself to be and feel happy and safe. Just for tonight.
If just life was not so unfair if their life choices were made differently, if they were not on different sides of the same history, if just. If just this could be their routine, holding each other until falling asleep, just them and nothing else, living their own lives, their own history, their own love. If just. But for tonight, they had each other, and together, they were ready to face them tomorrow and whatever was to come, they would stand together and protect Bloom like she was their own, they too well knew what it was like to feel lost,  to feel like you don’t belong, to feel like you have nowhere to go, no one who’s shoulders you can cry on, this is a war that isn’t over yet, you could it the beginning of the end, they had a teenager to help raise and protect, enemies who wanted their blood split on the floor, burning monsters who could team apart, but they have something bigger than all these, something that empowers them, and that my dear, is love, unity and will to fight.
