Intermediate Romantic Arc Development

Summary:

Troy and Abed have an announcement to make. Or, how I think season 3, episode 1 of Community should have gone.

Notes:

Thank you so much for reading! I might edit/add to this later. Let me know if you have any suggestions!

Work Text:

"Speaking of figuring things out," Troy grinned, "me and Abed have an announcement." Pointedly ignoring Britta’s furious whispering, Abed addressed the rest of the study group.

"Troy and I are living together."

"Oh, that's nice!" Shirley exhaled.

"If you want to get us a gift, we're registered at Linens 'n Things."

"We have plenty of linens, we mainly want the things," Abed clarified.

"And also..." Troy began. Abed cut in.

"We've started dating. I'm pansexual, Troy's bisexual, my dad knows, Troy's family doesn't, we already have a pride flag,” here he paused to look pointedly at Britta before continuing, "our first date was on July 19, we went to see Kickpuncher 3 at the drive-in and then tried to recreate the Spider-Man kiss scene. Troy got a concussion. Our next date was in the ER!"

"You two went on two dates in— never mind.” Jeff shook his head. “What's important is, we support you both, we're happy for you, and Shirley will come around eventually. If either of you are having issues with insecurity, tell me now so I can think of something to say. Now, do you want us to tell Pierce, or not?" Abed looked thoughtful.

"Hmm. I think we should wait. I was hoping to get his speech on video."

"Troy, dear," Shirley interjected, "is your head alright?"

"Yeah, it's fine now."

"Is there something else you want to say, or do you want to wait?" Abed asked, staring at Shirley.

"Well," she squeaked, "the Lord doesn't approve of... this..." Britta inhaled and opened her mouth. Abed waved his hand at her. "...but the Lord also does not approve of atheism and if I can find a way to stay friends with Britta, I'm sure I can find a way to stay friends with you two," she finished carefully. Abed turned to Britta.

"Did you want to say anything?"

"just want to say I think it's really cool that you guys are a gay interracial couple in this hostile political climate, and it's a shame you can't get married in all 50 states. That's why I'm not going to get married until anyone can get married, anywhere!"

"Even twelve-year-olds?" Jeff smirked.

"Oh, shut up! And I also want to say I'm really glad you guys are my gay best friends now."

"Not as progressive as you think it is,” Abed responded. “Now, does anyone else have a statement?"

Annie, who looked as though she might explode with excitement, burst out, "I'm really happy for you guys! Also, I'd like everyone to know that Jeff owes me 25 dollars. He bet you guys wouldn't get together until after Halloween.”

"Alright," Abed turned to Troy, "we've got Jeff's supportive speech, Shirley's begrudging agreement, Britta's misguided sentiment, Annie being nice, and the reveal of a bet, and we're filming Pierce later. Is that everything?"

Troy pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket and scanned it. "Yup, we just need to make sure we get one rejection and one coming-out in response from minor characters, and we should be good to go."

"Excellent." Abed smiled. He stood up, and so did Troy. He looked out over the study group's surprised and vaguely offended expressions. "We're gonna go make out for..." he looked to his wrist, "18 minutes before sprinting to class and arriving late while looking at each other smugly."

"We'll see you at lunch." Troy looked ecstatic. He grabbed Abed's hand, and they walked out of the room.
