When Frank plants himself on Robby’s doorstep he is fully intending to lie. He intends to plead his innocence, to beg for another chance, to get on his goddamn hands and knees and pray to Robby like he is some kind of eternal higher being who holds Frank's life in his hands.
Wants to, needs to, can't slip from the tightrope he’s been walking his entire life. Has to keep it together, keep it to himself, has Robby’s ’fuck you’ ringing in his ears and leaves him desperately trying to put his life back together.
He shouldn’t be here. Robby will never forgive him for this.

And then, he finds out about the bet.
He doesn’t mean too but someone leaves the box full of money on the island, with the list of bets sticking out and Eddie sees his name on it so he feels it’s fair game. Slips the paper out and smiles at the first few bets on the list, all about whos going to ask who out first, Buck or Eddie, when they’ve been together almost three years now and then-
“Thirty on Buck messing it up first.” He reads aloud. The laughter stopping abruptly. Athena and Maddie are here too, probably for lunch considering the bags of takeout he hadn’t noticed them place on the table as he read the list. “Forty-five on Buck cheating in the first month.”

Summary
Steve isn’t sure what wakes him, his clock reads 8:43 which is twenty minutes before he’s supposed to be up to go and take the kids to the arcade for what must be the fourth time this week but it’s the middle of summer and everyone is back in Hawkins for the first time since the Byers left for Cali so he supposes they’re just excited to spend time together again.
He stays laying for a moment, to see if it was anything particular. The house is as silent as it always is, his parents are rarely back anymore and the silence has become almost as comforting as it is daunting.
Just as he’s about to decide that it wasn’t anything, there’s a crash from the kitchen that has Steve up and out of bed, grabbing his nail-covered bat and sneaking as quietly and quickly as he can towards the noise. He doesn’t know what it could be, there’s a long list of Upside Down related stuff he hopes it isn’t, it’s too early for that. He’s getting too old for that.
He’s just shy of being seen from whoevers there in the kitchen but close enough that he can still see in, it says enough that he’s shocked to see his own mother in her own house.

He knows it’s getting bad when at fourteen years old Tommy finds himself sitting in a train station of a city he doesn’t know with his phone in his hand staring at a contact that has never replied to any of his messages.
He stares, and stares, and stares, and stares before his hand moves of its own volition, clicking call before he can stop himself and dreading both outcomes to the results of a test with no right answers. It rings. He shouldn’t be here.
It’s two o’clock on a Wednesday, he should be in class. It’s still ringing. Maybe he should hang up? He’s obviously not going to pick up and Tommy really shouldn’t have skipped school, maybe his teachers called Phil and then he’d really be in deep shit because not only will he have detention but he’ll have to deal with whatever punishment his dad gives him too, which would not be good. Not that Phil is home enough to answer the phone but still-
“Hey!” The ringing stops. He answered.

Summary
It starts as a joke.
The kids, they’re little shits, who make fun of him on the daily but he loves enough to take them to school and help with their homework. Drives them places when it's raining or cold or they can’t be bothered to bike and packs them lunches when he knows their parents have forgotten. Let’s them sleep in his house when those same parents are out of town, or when Joyce is at work and they can’t all sleep there, and the Wheelers are sick of all the kids spending days and days and days in the basement and like he said it started as a joke.
A comment here and there about him being a babysitter, how far he’s fallen from King Steve to become an unpaid childminder, a joke that isn’t quite a joke after the tenth time. Then when he really falls into the roll, somewhere between the first experience of the upside down and the third, when not knowing when they are, if they’re okay, made his chest tight and his breath shorten until he can get ahold of at least three of them.
Somewhere between there being just four of them to Eleven coming back and Max joining the group they start calling him mom.
