Saltwater Taffy

Summary:

Peace fell upon the city but it won't last long. It never does.

Notes:

Finally! After a month or so I have part 6 finished. If you guys follow my insta or twitter, I have hurt my ankle and I wasn't in my room in a while so I wasn't exactly in a writing mood. But I'm glad I'm getting back to my main projects. With that in mind 'It lurks among us' will return, updates for that will be slower as well as short oneshots here and there.

Hope you all enjoy~

Work Text:

“Oh, let me get that for you, Doppo-san.”

Kunikida snorted as a small container of candy-filled jars was taken out of his hands. “Atsushi~ I’m more than capable of running my shop.” He wasn’t put off by that really, he was amused more than anything.

Feeling sheepish, Atsushi chuckled. “I know. But technically you should still be taking it easy. Remember what Yosano-sensei said. Right, Kyouka-chan?”

At the counter, Kyouka was wiping it clean for the third time in the hour. “Yes, rest is good for you Doppo-san.”

Shaking his head, Kunikida couldn’t help but chuckle at the light chiding coming from those two of all people. However, that was to be expected. It hasn’t been long at all since his discharge from the hospital. He was still reeling from a few things because of the incident but he was more or less back to his normal self.

Whatever that was in all honesty.

“Wah, look at the cute workers helping their cute boss~”

Kunikida had to turn away as his shoulders shook, hearing a whine coming from Atsushi. He was trying not to laugh in front of the young man’s face but the timing of that was just too good not to react to. He had to calm down before facing the other person. “And a hello to you too Dazai-chan~”

In his usual attire, though a couple of band-aids, colorful as well, on his face, Dazai grinned. “Hello, Kunikida-kun~” He just patted Atsushi and Kyouka’s heads as he greeted them as well. “I just came down here to say hello and maybe get a treat or two. Watcha’ got today for me to try?”

Smiling, Kunikida hummed. “Well I got some of those taffies that are imported from another area. It’s assorted though so I can’t just give you an individual one.” He was already going to the shelf where there were boxes of treats. “I think….ah, yes. This is the one.” Taking a small box, he turned and smiled. “Here you go.”

“worse, I can wait to try it, thank you Kunikida….” Dazai went over to take it out of the other’s hands but then his eyes noticed the bandages around Kunikida’s neck and his voice trailed off. Ah, right. He had forgotten for a second that bruises take time to heal, even hand-shaped ones.

Kunikida noticed Dazai getting silent as he waved a hand in front of the other. “Hello~? Earth to Dazai-chan, is everything alright?”

Snapping back to reality, Dazai blinked twice before he smiled. “Ah, sorry. I must have wandered too much in my head, it happens. I’ll pay for the taffy and I’ll let you know how they are, hm?”

Although it wasn’t obvious, it wasn’t subtle either. At least to Atsushi. He knew that everyone, including Dazai was on guard because of the abduction. Kunikida could have lost his life and while it would be no one’s fault in the matter, the guilt would be too much, especially to Atsushi himself, the reason why the abduction happened. He can still remember listening in on a topic that can no longer be avoided and honestly, he expected a worser reaction considering.

--

Atsushi was getting something from the gift shop to give to Kunikida, just a small stuffed animal, and was coming back to cheer the man up. He had regeneration as part of his ability but the man didn’t have that so he wanted to make that room a bit more colorful for him while he was staying there. However, he was just reaching for the doorknob when a voice from the inside stopped him.

“This is something that I feel like you need to know.”

“About what, exactly?”

“About Atsushi, of course.”

The person in question slowly dropped his hand as his eyes widened. He moved to the side of the door as he sat on a nearby chair. This was something important, he just knew it.

Inside the room, Kunikida was a bit confused. “And? What is it about Atsushi that I need to know? Was it about the 7 billion bounty he had on his head?”

Dazai paused before he smiled. “Ah, I see. So you were aware of that. Ah, that Akutagawa.” He murmured under his breath. “Well, it is about that but there is more to it than that.” His hands were idly braiding Kunikida’s hair, a way for him to keep himself from looking antsy. “You already know that Atsushi was deemed a major threat to the Military Police, yes?”

“Yeah.” Kunikida nodded a bit.

“Well, it was during Atsushi’s first case that the bounty came to light,” Dazai explained. “Ordinarily we wouldn’t place such information in your hands mostly because you’re a citizen but the president decided to make some leeway just this once. He was aware that while I was the one that vouched for Atsushi be become a member, you were the one that brought him to us in a sense. He told me and I agree, that you needed to know.”

Silent for a moment Kunikida hummed. “So that’s why the Port Mafia was keen on getting him. I can understand why Atsushi couldn’t say anything. You guys were trying to figure out who would have much money to do that, right?”

Nodding, Dazai glanced over at Kunikida’s form, not as wrapped as he was but still a lot. “Yes. Let’s just say that was my mission around the time Atsushi was abducted. I can’t go into more details on that but I found out about the buyer and I’ll talk to the president after this.” His hands then paused. “….everyone felt at fault, you know.”

“Hm?”

Dazai looked up to Kunikida with a straight face. “It boiled down to wrong place wrong time kind of thing but Akutagawa of the Port Mafia really could have killed you while taking Atsushi to do away witnesses. Kyouka informed me of that. We thanked her for vouching for your life when she did, even at the heat of the moment. Still, the alternative could have happened and we wouldn’t be sitting here right now. At the very least, I’m glad you’re still alive but we all felt at fault nonetheless.”

Kunikida took those words in and wasn’t sure what to say at first. Never in his mind was any urge to blame the agency for the incident that occurred. They were amazing but they are not everywhere, things fall through the cracks and it happened out of their control. He soon smiled. “I’m also thankful that I am alive as well. I don’t blame the agency though if that is what you felt that I was going to do. You all did your best and you rescued us. We’re alive and safe because of that, there is no way I’ll blame you all for at least doing your job I’ll always be grateful for it, okay?”

He wished he can say that it was okay to blame them. Kunikida placed a lot of faith in the agency but there was a moment where some agreed with Ranpo is not helping and some that didn’t. The president had the final say but it didn’t change the fact that Atsushi’s rescue could have not happened. He knew how Ranpo was and the man wasn’t heartless but if Kunikida were to be spared and left behind and came to know about that moment, he probably would have screamed and screamed for Atsushi’s return, that faith he placed on them on the brink of breaking.

Dazai wished he can come clean about that but he decided for the blonde’s and Atsushi’s sake, to let sleeping dogs lie. He smiled with that thought in mind. “I’ll let the president and the agency know that. They’ll come later after work. Also, when you’re out of the hospital, the president had something else to say and it involves Kyouka. Just know that, okay?”

Kunikida nodded as he watched Dazai’s hands pulled back after finishing the braid. “I hope it’s good news. She has already been through a lot. Even if she did what she did, I don’t want her on a path that she never wanted to be on in the first place. I don’t know much about the Port Mafia but…I wonder if there is anyone there that isn’t…hurting in some way…?”

That made Dazai paused completely as he looked at Kunikida, even as the other was glancing at his own bandaged hands. His mind wandered to a memory of a certain person who was with him when times were tough. With an easy smile, he hummed. “Who knows.”

Outside of the room, Atsushi’s mind was on Kyouka and what will happen to her. He held the plushie close to him and hoped for the best as well. That was all he can do at that point.

--

It was the president that decreed two things, one that he will take Kyouka in for the time being and two, something that everyone, excluding Ranpo and to an extent, Dazai, was surprised to hear. For the foreseeable future, Kyouka will be working at Kunikida’s store while things were being done about her status and situation.

Atsushi was glad for it and that Kyouka’s determination to prove Akutagawa wrong made it all the better even when she had a right to just run away and be gone from all that mess. When he told Kunikida about it, the man was delighted and relieved. Kyouka working in his shop was a formality and it would be an indirect way to keep her close to the agency.

However, the president had come to Kunikida, saying that, though it wasn’t the man’s fault in any way shape, or form, if he were to have three or more workers that happened to be ability users, ends up working in his store, he may need to check into getting a Special Division Ability Business Permit.

Kunikida knew about that permit. He also knew that the president had someone who worked to the bone to get it as it was very difficult to obtain one no matter the business. He was aware that while he never flaunts it around, he was an ability user and that sooner or later his shop will need that permit if he were to take in more people that happened to be ability users. He thanked Fukuzawa for the warning before asking him about the formal procedures into getting one.

While that was happening, the agency had come to know about the buyer who placed a bounty on Atsushi’s head. It was the leader of this supposed legendary organization in America called the Guild. Though why they wanted Atsushi of all people was the question, considering the limitless funds and connections but maybe that answer will come to them eventually.

At present, everyone was just glad to have some sort of peace after that abduction incident. After Kunikida’s discharge, the agency would check up on him to make sure he was doing alright physically and mentally. Even the president had a sit down with him about a few things, making sure the other’s wellbeing wasn’t compromised due to that traumatic incident.

Which was why Dazai was sort of walking on eggshells around Kunikida at the moment, at least in Atsushi’s eyes. He then felt a tug on the end of his sleeve and glanced over at Kyouka.

“Dazai-san is very worried for Doppo-san too.” Nothing got past her as it seemed. Kyouka then lowered her voice. “Is it true that Doppo-san doesn’t like seeing blood?”

Atsushi hummed before nodding. “Yeah but I’m not sure why. All he told me was that it wasn’t the first time seeing such things. But I’m sure he’ll be okay. He has the agency and us to help him, right?”

Kyouka nodded with a faint smile. “Yes.” Though her situation was up in the air, for the time being, she knew that if anything, she had a place outside of the mafia and it was in the very candy shop with the man that gave her such kindness that was beyond a normal person.

The front door was pushed open with the bell dinging at the top of it. All eyes went to the door and all saw a familiar face.

“Oh, I should have known you’d be here.” It was Tanizaki as he smiled. “Sorry, I had a lot to do and it slipped my mind you might be here if not the agency.”

Atsushi smiled. “Ah, Tanizaki, hey. What’s up?”

Tanizaki greeted Kunikida and Dazai before going up to Atsushi. “The police just came by with a case that they were trying to crack but couldn’t. You know, the usual.” He had a file in hand and gave it to Atsushi. “Sorry to pull you out of the shop but duty calls and we’re a bit short on manpower at the moment.”

“Nah, it’s no problem.” Atsushi took the file. “Will I be going alone on this case?”

“Since you haven’t been with him yet, how about you go with Kenji-kun for this one. It’d be good to shadow him and see how he does on a case.” Tanizaki smiled. “Depending on how much I’d get done, I’ll join you both later on, okay?”

“Sounds like a plan.” Atsushi went to undo his apron after placing the folder on the counter. “Sorry, Doppo-san. Work and all.”

Kunikida waved it off. “Don’t worry about it. Good luck at work. I’ll just be here with Kyoyka-chan until you get back, okay?”

“I’ll be with Kunikida-kun as well~” Dazai pointed to himself. “After all, I’m also taking a short leave to recuperate~”

Though the agency knew he formally took a few days off (something he rarely did), they were more or less aware it wasn’t because he was taking a break per se. However, no one was that heartless to call him out on that. They would have done the same thing if they could.

“Well then, I’ll you all later! Dinner at your place, Doppo-san?”

“You know it.” Kunikida smiled. “Have a good day, Atsushi.” He waved as he and Tanizaki left. “Now then,” He looked at his watch and hummed. “It is around lunchtime. How about we take our break and go out to eat?” When getting a nod from Kyouka, he looked at Dazai. “You’re welcome to join us~ I was thinking maybe a change in scenery so I was thinking maybe we go to conveyer belt sushi place, so how about it? My treat.”

“That does sound good.” Dazai nodded. “I’m in!” He tucked the taffies into his coat pocket. “I haven’t had sushi in a while anyway.” Also, he was internally thankful, no doubt if they were to go into the café as usual, the server will out him once again about his debt and he was in no mood to look uncool in front of Kunikida.

“Then it’s settled. After that, we’ll quickly get some dessert before returning to work, okay?” He smiled at Kyouka.

Kyouka looked delighted as she nodded. She was craving for another crepe.

With that, the trio left the candy shop and went into the city. It was a nice and warm day out and everyone was out and about. Kyouka was walking in front of the pair being of a slightly faster pace but she would occasionally glance over her shoulder and see the older man walking together. Dazai would be pointing at something while Kunikida indulged whatever the other was talking about. However, her keen eyes never missed anything.

Especially knowing that Dazai was leaning a bit closer to Kunikida as if trying to be with him as much as possible.

The sushi place at that moment wasn’t as crowded even during their lunch hours which was good for them as they found a booth easily. Kunikida and Kyouka sat on one side and Dazai on another. They barely got situated when Kunikida looked as though he realized something.

“Ah, darn. I need to text Atsushi and tell him that we’re not at the candy shop at the moment. Don’t want to surprise him during a case. He might be around. Give me a sec.” Kunikida smiled, though weakly, as he moved from his seat and went towards the bathrooms to do so.

Dazai idly watched him go before glanced over at the conveyor belt that had sushi moving by. “Didn’t need to leave to do that.” He murmured as he moved to take off his coat.

“Mm, you noticed it too,” Kyouka stated, not questioned.

Nodding, Dazai sighed. “He’s getting better but the thought of Atsushi vanishing hasn’t left his mind. He doesn’t want us to see him in such a state, though we’re trained in handling panic attacks, among other things.” He saw a plate of shrimp sashimi as he took it from the belt. “He has been pushed into a corner already, we have to have faith he’ll come to us when he’s ready to talk about it.”

Kyouka agreed but a weight of guilt was sitting in her stomach. Kunikida was just barely himself as the agency can see. An incident like that wasn’t something to get over in a very short time and she knew that. But it would have been better if he wasn’t dragged into that abduction in the first place. She thought about it after they left that ship and back to the city.

“…Kyouka-chan~” Dazai brought the young lady back to reality as he placed one of the shrimp sashimi on her plate. “No use feeling bad to the point of no appetite. Kunikida-kun has a lot on his plate already and we can’t add to that worry by not eating. You don’t need to eat a lot but just have enough for his sake if not your own, okay?”

The young lady lowered her head but nodded. However, she couldn’t stop herself as she then looked up. “Dazai-san. I know that there are things that no one can control, but I can’t help but be at fault for what happened. Because…I saw it…he was not himself…I ask Atsushi about it just before he left. But for him to die by that man’s ability….”

Right. Dazai can see where she was going with that. It was a ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’ situation. Either she would carry the guilt of a kind man’s death or a kind man’s weakened mental state. With Akutagawa as her former mentor, there was just no winning, not for all involved. “We told you didn’t we, we don’t blame you for what had happened. Even you had no idea that you were being tracked. You thought you were going to the police and eventually be sentenced to death for your ‘crimes’ and that would be the end of it. You didn’t know and for that at least, we don’t blame you. However, I would like to remind you that what will happen to you is still up in the air.”

Kyouka nodded as she stayed quiet.

“For your contribution on helping Atsushi-kun and Kunikida-kun escape, the agency gave you leniency and the president is considering your potential but please know that this will be a rough road ahead of you. If you don’t want a repeat of what happened then get stronger, stronger than you have been yesterday, and stronger than you had been today. I’m not one for comfort but know that whatever happens from here on out will be up to you. Don’t ruin the second chance Kunikida-kun has given you. Is that clear?”

A moment of silence before Kyouka looked up at Dazai with determination in her eyes. She knew it won’t be easy but she will try, for Atsushi who opened the door to the light and Kunikida being the one to lead her on that path, her path. “I understand. I won’t squander this second chance. I’ll do my best.”

Satisfied at the very least, Dazai smiled. “Good, I’ll hold you to it. For now, you better eat, young lady! Can’t end up like some chibi and stay short forever~” He joked as his expression brightened a bit at Kunikida returning. “Ah, Kunikida-kun~ We missed you~”

Kunikida looked a bit better as he went to sit down once again. “Charmer.” He chuckled. “Ah, the shrimp. Nice first choice. For me, I think I’ll get…the egg roll.” He got the plate and placed it in front of him. “Need to start somewhere, right?” He smiled at Kyouka.

Looking at the man’s smile and some of the colors that have yet to return to his face, Kyouka knew for sure that Dazai was right. Kunikida was doing his best to get stronger so she needed to do the same. She smiled back. “Yes.” She glanced over at Dazai who nodded. It was a long road ahead for her but it was indeed a good start.

--

The day went on, uneventful on their end as they returned to the shop. Dazai had nothing much to do since he had some time off so he hung out inside while Kunikida and Kyouka worked. The business wasn’t booming but there were some customers throughout the afternoon. It was just about the evening, around the time it was closing that Atsushi came back and he looked haggard.

When asked about it, Atsushi wasn’t sure where to start so he sighed. “I just found out what Kenji-kun’s ability was.”

It took a moment before Kunikida understood something and nodded. “Oh, so that’s what that noise was earlier today. Yeah, from what I was told, Kenji is super strong but it’s only when he’s hungry. When he eats, he takes a nap almost instantly. Like clockwork, really.” He can remember that one time where he twisted his ankle and Kenj14-year-old and carried him to the infirmary. That was something, a 6’2 man being carried by a 14 year old but it wasn’t the worst thing.

Dazai snorted. “Ah, yes. I think now Atsushi-kun has seen most people’s abilities. So was the case solved?”

“Yeah,” Atsushi nodded with Kyouka patting his back. “Tanizaki was kind enough to carry him back to the dorms after he ate.” Yeah, he’ll apologize for screaming at him after he found out about the ability. “I’m just glad it’s over.”

“I’m sure.” Kunikida stated to try and lighten the mood. “Well we’re just about done cleaning the shop so let’s head on out so I can close it properly, okay? Kyouka-chan, if you will.”

Nodding, she took Atsushi’s hand and the end of Dazai’s coat sleeve as she led them out of the shop. The older boys got a laugh at that. At least the day ended on a good note.

After locking up the shop, Kunikida asked Dazai if he wanted also join them for dinner at his place. He may have gotten a bit too excited when the man said yes as he was about to fist pump into the air, much to his embarrassment and the amusement of the group. Either way, it meant having to go to a local grocery store to get more food.

It became a nice little trip for the group. Although throughout most of it, they got some stares coming from people walking by. Of course, Atsushi had to the voice of reason eventually and asked Dazai to get out of the shopping cart.

Dazai refused.

Kunikida snickered while Kyouka looked amused.

They made it to Kunikida’s place as the group took off their shoes and entered the place. Atsushi asked if he can take a quick shower after helping put away some groceries and when he was gone to do so, Kyouka volunteered to help Kunikida cook. Dazai, who has very little experience in cooking, decided just to sit at the island in the kitchen and watch the pair work.

As he was watching them cook, Dazai’s mind started to wander a bit. He should count the unexpected but grateful blessings that fell upon the agency. First off, they now know the buyer’s identity, which in it is a problem. With the bounty method crushed, he wouldn’t be surprised if the leader would try something else to get to Atsushi, maybe even coming to the agency themselves. That possibility wasn’t zero. Second, the Port Mafia. No doubt the failure of the capture would be a setback for them. It was a blow of pride than anything or they may lay low for a bit because of it. Thirdly, the person before him.

Kunikida.

When he heard about the man being hospitalized, he had thought the worst. Being abducted, injured, and quite possibly, being traumatized by the said incident. He won’t lie, part of him wanted to raise hell within the Mafia for hurting someone who had no business in being in that situation but then again, Akutagawa let him live. It was a messy bout of emotions that he didn’t want to indulge himself in.

Plus, even though the man was safe, Dazai can say that not long after the discharge he could get random calls in the middle of the night that broke his heart every time. Kunikida has been through a lot in a short amount of time, that was true but healing fully from it will still take a bit of time. The time that they may not have in the grand scheme of things. The moment of peace will not last forever and he hopes Kunikida won’t find himself involved yet again.

“…chan….Dazai-chan~”

Dazai blinked and he came upon two pairs of stares aimed at him. There was a second of blankness before it was shifted into a smile. “Yes~?”

Kunikida snorted as he rolled his eyes. “You mind setting the table? Atsushi should be coming back in a moment and we’re just about done cooking. You know where the plates and such by now anyway.”

“Sure thing~” Dazai can never go long without thinking especially since the situation, in general, will turn dire at a moment’s notice. For now, he’ll have to just push those thoughts away and enjoy the peace for as long as he can. “Island or table?”

Thinking about it for a moment, Kunikida hummed. “Island, we have a small group anyway.”

“Roger~” Dazai was getting up as Atsushi came back, refreshed and drying his hair with a towel.

The group soon had a nice and lively dinner, light conversation, enjoyment of the food, and surprise dessert that Kunikida bought some time ago. All in all, it felt like any other night. However, it all came to an end when the group had to leave, work the next day and all. Kyouka was getting tired so Atsushi had her on his back after they both got shoes on.

“You sure it’s okay for Kyouka to continue staying with me at the dorms?” Atsushi asked, his voice a little lower for Kyouka’s sake. “It’s not exactly ideal for a few reasons.”

Dazai can see why the other would say that. “I know but I did tell you before, it’s not like she had another family to go to and she is a target for the Mafia. There is no way they would assume she is gone or dead without making sure first if you catch my drift.” He let that sink in for Atsushi before he continued. “I know this living situation between you two isn’t exactly great but it’s the best we can do for now. Maybe we can use that spare room as her room eventually but for now, it’s best to have her as close as possible.”

Atsushi nodded. He had thought about asking Kunikida if Kyouka can stay with him but after the incident, he was against that idea. He didn’t want anything else to happen to the man. “I understand. I’ll do my best to help her in the meantime.”

“Mm, good.” Dazai nodded, satisfied. “On that note, we’ll be taking our leave now. See you in the morning, Kunikida-kun?”

“Of course.” Kunikida already had his hair down as he was seeing him off. The living situation wasn’t his business so he’ll trust Dazai in that. “Please be safe returning to the dorms, okay?”

Nodding, Atsushi smiled. “Yes! Have a good evening, Doppo-san.” He waved as he left first, making sure Kyouka was okay on his back.

“Rest well, Atsushi.” Kunikida waved back, content at least.

“Kunikida-kun.” Dazai smiled as he beckoned the other over. “Just one more thing I want to say before I leave.”

Curious, Kunikida went over to Dazai. “Yeah, what’s up…?” He was then pulled into an embrace which was surprising considering it was Dazai who initiated it.

With his head on the other’s shoulder, Dazai hummed. He closed his eyes, feeling those emotions swirl inside of his chest, what happened lately and what will happen. He gripped the back of the other’s shirt tightly before he sighed and pulled back a bit. He can tell this was sudden with how confused the other was but then he placed his hands on the other’s face, practically cupping it. He then smiled. “Don’t hesitate to come to me or the agency if something is wrong, okay? We’re here for you as we are for the city. Never forget that.”

Though not sure what was going on in Dazai’s head to say such a thing, he knew when the man was serious in his words. With his face still held, he nodded. “I know and yeah. I’ll do my best to remind myself of that…thank you.” He smiled.

Content with that, Dazai patted his cheeks. “Good. I’ll see you at the shop tomorrow.” With a wink and a salute, he was out of the door, catching up with the others at his own pace.

Kunikida watched him go before he closed the door. He placed his hand on the wood of it as he sighed. “He is only looking out for me, they all are…and yet…I can’t ever get used to it. Maybe someday….” He was about to lock the door when he heard a sound on the other side of it. His expression changed before he opened the door once again. He looked around before glancing down. There was a smile on his face upon seeing it. “Well, I guess I won’t have to worry about leftovers as much.” He opened the door wide enough. “Come in.”

Before that door closed, there was a tail that looked like it belonged to a cat.

--

“So how was the taffy?” Kunikida asked, adjusting his apron. “I can take the criticism, it’s not everyone’s favorite treat.” He smiled.

Dazai snorted as he leaned on the counter. “It was very chewy but what taffy wouldn’t be. Melts nicely in my mouth though. My favorite is the lemon~” He watched the other fill up some jars with their designated candy. “Also have you changed your bandages? I can tell that you have. Must have been a pain for you.”

“It was, admittedly but at least it doesn’t hurt as much anymore.” Kunikida patted the side of his neck. “Also I never got to thank you for teaching me how to redo bandages. It came in handy since I’m not exactly in a position to know that sort of thing.”

“Meh, don’t worry about it.” Dazai waved it off. “Almost all wounds heal with time and…well, if you’re okay now about seeing it, then I won’t ask more about it.”

Surprised for a moment, Kunikida then smiled. “Thank you but it’s okay. I mean it’s not, about what happened but I’m okay with it since…I don’t know…it’s hard to explain.” It wasn’t as clear-cut as heroes and villains. Everyone on that ship, including the one that had taken them away, was hurting. It didn’t justify the action but, it certainly explained it. “I just hope Atsushi won’t have to deal with that sort of thing again…Atsushi can take care of himself but that’s not the point. Even if one was hurting, I don’t condone someone taking their feelings out on someone else. Atsushi did nothing wrong to them and yet….”

“….I see.” Dazai hummed. “But that’s how humans can be at times. Hating someone and hating themselves, that’s par for the course especially if one were to be in the mafia, I can only assume in this case. Akutagawa…Atsushi did a good job defeating him but you have a point. Bounty or not, there are some things that one shouldn’t condone.” The blonde had no idea that those words were directed at himself as well. “But even I can’t tell what the future might hold.”

Nodding slowly, Kunikida hummed. “You’re right. We can only hope for the best in that case.” He sighed. “Moving on, how about trying out something else? I have this set of rock candy that I managed to get overseas—” He paused as his ears were picking up something. He moved his head up. “….Do you hear that?”

He wished he didn’t but Dazai was looking up as well. “Indeed I do.”

The two men went out of the shop just as they saw the propellers before there was the loud screeching of cars and honking. While Kunikida was confused, Dazai was frowning deeply.

Soon his phone in his coat vibrated as Dazai took out his phone and opened it, seeing that he got a text message. He sighed as he closed it. “I expected this at least. Kunikida-kun,” He turned to the man. “Those rock candies will have to wait. I’m needed at the agency.”

“…Is it about the helicopter that just came down?” Kunikida had to guess.

Dazai nodded. “If I have to take a shot in the dark, I think I know who decided to grant us a visit. On that note,” He went to him. “Under no circumstances are you to leave the shop. Don’t step a foot out of the door until I text you that it is okay. Just in case something were to happen, okay.”

“I understand.” Kunikida nodded. “Just…be careful yourselves.”

“We always are~” Dazai smiled. “I’ll be off. Remember, not a foot out of that shop.” He patted the other’s shoulder before he took off running to the building and soon up the stairs to the agency.

Walking back into the shop Kunikida can only imagine what would be happening within the agency. He had faith in them but he couldn’t help but worry all the same. Though it was wishful thinking, he had hoped the abduction would be the end of it.

--

A trio left the agency building, one of them with a suitcase. That person merely glanced over and noticed a colorful candy shop. There was a moment where they paused before turning towards the other two. “You know what, I’ll be visiting this quint shop for a bit.”

The redhead shrugged as the other nodded, both leaving the man alone.

Placing a hand on his hip, he decided to give the shop a gander. He walked over to the place and opened the door, the bell ringing to signify his presence.

Turning around, Kunikida was all smiles at the person. “Hello, welcome to the shop! How can I help you today?”

The man blinked at the energy the other gave out before he looked around the place. “Mm…I have been through many sweet shops throughout my lifetime but I have never seen one so…colorful before.” He glanced at Kunikida. “You have quite the selection despite the size.”

Kunikida chuckled. “Yeah well, I try to get as many kinds of candy and treats that I can. I didn’t work this hard for the shop to fall. It’s been a dream of my mine and I’m glad I made it come true with my own hands.” He then paused as he covered his mouth. “Sorry, rambling. I didn’t mean to….”

The man had a faint smile as he waved it off. “Don’t worry about it, old sport. I can relate at least to working hard to get one’s wants and you do seem like the type of person to understand that. Now then, what kind of sweets would you recommend a newcomer like me?”

Oh, a challenge. He can do that. Kunikida looked at the man up and down before he nodded. “I think I got something.” He went to one of the boxed sections on one of the shelves and took something out of it. “I think this will suit you.”

“Oh?” The man looked over and hummed. “Boxed chocolates, huh.”

“Not just any boxed chocolates.” Kunikida smiled. “This is pretty much the most expensive kind I managed to secure having in the shop. It is assorted but it has the best flavors the company has to offer and well, I got this a few years back once for a birthday and it was delicious.” The box was pretty big and it was pretty to look at. “Though…chocolate tends to taste better with a company, you know.”

That threw the man off as he then chuckled. “And why would you say that?”

Kunikida was silent at first before he shrugged. “Just a feeling. And not to be rude but you do dress like someone who has a lot of income to spare. You’re not the first and certainly not the last, to say the least.” His smile softened. “Getting candy is great but sharing them is even better because you get to know those around you and see their smiles. Candy and sweets don’t have a point in why they are the way that they are, that’s up to the makers and the sellers. If makers make the candy with their purpose in mind, then as a seller, it’s my job to make sure those feelings are spread throughout the people. So as a seller, I’m saying to you is sharing is caring so make sure everyone you know can get a bit of that chocolate, okay~?”

The man blinked twice before he burst out laughing. “Wow! What a sales pitch and a good one at that!” He stated. “You certainly know what a customer wants as soon as they walk in. You’re not some greenhorn, that’s for sure.” He smiled at Kunikida. “Very well, I’ll take three of those. After all, sharing is caring.”

“Of course.” Kunikida smiled as he took three of those boxes. “Would you like me to put them in a box to carry out?”

“If you can, then thank you.” The man reached into his pocket and got out his wallet. He sort of forgotten that he had a suitcase full of cash. After being rung up, he saw the box, decorated with care and creativity, he was mildly impressed. “Hmm…I’m curious, are you the only one working at the shop?”

Kunikida chuckled. “Well, I guess you can say that I do have some part-time help but it’s just me most of the time. Business can be slow though so I don’t get overwhelmed with it.”

“I see.” The man hummed. “Well, that won’t do.” He then got a card from his wallet as gave it to the other. “Here, this is my card. I know a thing or two about making businesses boom. Give me a call any time and I’ll show you the ropes.”

A bit blindsided by that, Kunikida fumbled a bit before he managed to get his business card as well. “R-Right. Here, have my contact information as well.” It was his shop business card. “Thank you so much.”

What a flustered young man. He couldn’t help but chuckle at that. “Mm.” After exchanging the cards and picking up the box like it was nothing, the man smiled. “Well then, I look forward to talking to you, until next time. Have a good day, old sport.”

“Thank you! Please come again!” Kunikida bowed as the man left. Looking up afterward, he sighed as he placed a hand on his chest. “That was something. Never before did I get a potential connection come to me. Usually the other way around.” He then looked at the transaction and smile. “Well, at least I have a bit of a bonus to give to Atsushi next time he gets his check.”

--

“What’s with the box?”

Fitzgerald grinned. “Just a treat for the guild. We’ll need all of that energy for our next plan of attack.

--

It was worrying to know that Kenji just up and disappeared not long after escorting the Guild out the day before. With the news of a Port Mafia building vanishing as well, who knows how strong that American organization was. Regardless, Ranpo made the order to find Kenji with Tanizaki while he dragged Dazai to the president’s office to discuss what to do from there.

Which was why he was caught between a rock and a hard place.

“Come on brother, if a building can disappear then me being away isn’t going to make a difference.” Naomi reasoned.

“Even so, you don’t have an ability,” Tanizaki argued. “We’re all walking targets. It’s better if you stay at the agency where the president is.”

Atsushi sighed as he heard them arguing behind him. He really couldn’t take sides as both had good points. The matter though was still when and where the Guild will attack next. They don’t know where they are stationed (it was obvious they weren’t leaving anytime soon) or what kind of abilities they have. Every second passed is one second less they have. It was frustrating, to say the least.

Though he can vaguely hear some guy calling out for this ‘Elle’ or something while walking.

“Ah, Atsushi!” At the other side of the crosswalk was none other than Kunikida who was enjoying a day off for once as he was walking towards Atsushi. “Hey, I didn’t see you in a bit, how are you?” He smiled.

The tiger boy snorted as he bumped hips against the other. “You saw me yesterday…though I wished everything was okay for once.” He sighed. “Not sure if anyone told you….” He trailed off as he rubbed the back of his head.

“About Kenji vanishing? Yeah, Dazai-chan texted me. I had a day off so…I wanted to make sure you all are okay.” Kunikida’s smile faded a bit in worry. “I mean I know you all can take care of yourselves but whoever is doing such a thing…I can’t condone it…” He shook his head. He wasn’t a member but they were his friends and he will do what he can for them.

Feeling moved, Atsushi nodded. “I appreciate it but you don’t have to worry. I’m sure Kenji will pop out around somewhere but just in case, you can go to the agency and see Dazai-san and the others. I have Tanizaki and Naomi with me—”

“Naomi!”

Kunikida and Atsushi looked over and saw Tanizaki by himself and frantically looking around.

“Tanizaki…Tanizaki, what’s wrong?” Atsushi, along with Kunikida, quickened their pace up to the other.

The redhead looked scared and panicking a bit as he shook his head. “I-It’s Naomi. I just looked away for a moment and she just…vanished! She was talking to me and somehow it was cut off and just up and disappeared!”

“Okay, Tanizaki, look.” Kunikida was there as he smiled reassuringly. “It’s only been a moment. She couldn’t have gone that far. You and Atsushi will look for her in one street and I’ll do it on the other. We have our phones so we can contact each other when one of us does find her.” He didn’t want Tanizaki to freak out when things were already so stressful for the agency. “Atsushi is here with you and so am I. We’ll find her.”

A beat of silence before Tanizaki slowly nodded. “Y-You’re right. We’ll find her.” And hopefully, find the kidnapper and give them hell. “I’ll start now and look…” He noticed something and his face changed. “….You.”

“Eh?” Kunikida was then startled as he saw Tanizaki runoff. “Tanizaki, hey!” He turned to Atsushi, worried. “What was that all about?” He can also hear someone looking for someone else as well. Seemed the day was going to hell.

Atsushi wished he knew. “I don’t know, it was like he saw someone familiar—” He only got a glimpse of indeed a familiar face before everything went dark.

--

                                                                                                                     “Let’s play!”

--

Before he knew it, Atsushi found himself in another place entirely. He opened his eyes and found himself not in the middle of the crosswalk but rather…in some sort of room? Space? Well whatever it was, it was not good.

It wasn’t just him in that place, a lot of people were sucked into it, including Tanizaki and Kunikida, all of them confused as to why they ended up there.

As he was looking around, Kunikida’s confusion was mixed with awe at the place. Pink and soothing was his first thought but then he noticed the amount of ‘presents’ and dolls and toys laying around. Almost as if he was in someone’s playroom. Against his better judgment, he walked up to one of the plushies and picked them up. It was a bunny. He smiled at how soft it felt. It was calming at least for him, better than panicking for sure.

“Doppo-san!” Atsushi was relieved to see him as he went up to him. He was glad the other wasn’t freaking out. “Thank goodness. Are you okay?”

Nodding, Kunikida showed Atsushi the bunny. “I’m fine. Nothing bruised or broken. Although…I’m pretty sure we’re not in Yokohama anymore.” Wow, déjà vu anyone?

Torn between groaning and smiling, Atsushi had to agree. “You’re right. Something tells me that this is an ability at work here.” Soon he heard a young lady’s voice and all heads turned to the source of that voice.

“Good afternoon everyone.” A young lady with long thick red hair tied into pigtails clapped and announced herself. “And welcome to Anne’s Chamber.” She then got a bit flustered. “Oh my, how embarrassing. With everyone looking at me, I’m at a loss at what to do. I’m no good with talking to strangers.” She then smiled. “But that’s no good, I need to explain properly or everyone will get lost since well, I’d be confused if I was brought into a strange place—”

“Where’s Naomi?” Though they weren’t near Tanizaki, both Kunikida and Atsushi can feel the anger in that guy’s voice. His love for his sister is unparalleled, to say the least.

The red hair girl blinked before the smile came back. “Oh, that’s right. I’ll get that first. So you see, if you’re looking for your other agent friends, they are beyond this door.” She gestured to a heavy dark door that was embedded into the brick wall behind her.

Tanizaki ran to the window of the door and sure enough not only was Naomi there but also Kenji, the other missing agent. They were in another space filled with doll-like arms that were holding them captive. He tried to open the door but to no avail, calling out to his sister.

“Sorry but that door can’t open without a key.” The red hair girl noted. “Ah, but that door on the other side can be opened, easily too.”

Looking at each other, Atsushi and Kunikida then ran to the white door with gold linings and saw through the window of it.

“….Hold on.” Kunikida noticed something. “The outside…it’s monochrome and nothing is moving.” It was like they were stuck in time. “Atsushi, what does this mean?” The hand that was holding the bunny was shaking.

Atsushi bit his lip. “I think…this is her ability and we’re all held captive here.” He grabbed Kunikida’s arm in comfort before looking back at the captor in question.

The red hair girl smiled as her hands were behind her back. “Let me introduce myself. My name is Lucy. Where you all are right now is a dimension created by my ability. But don’t think you’re all trapped, per se. You can leave through the white door at any time…that is…if you don’t want your friends back.”

Kunikida gripped the bunny as he turned and looked at Lucy with a frown. “And what exactly do you want, young lady?”

Though she made a face for a second, Lucy was back to smiling again. “It’s a simple request. I want you to play with Anne in this chamber. Come out, Anne~” In a yellow spiral glow, she summoned something out of it. In mere seconds, a being came into a view, to most people it looked to be a huge homemade raggedy doll that was floating in mid-air.

The crowd was understandably on edge upon looking at that thing.

“You see, Anne loves to play.” Lucy continued. “She can be a bit needy at times but she has her cute side as well.” Though that gleam in those doll’s glassy eye told a different story.

Most of the citizens took one look at the huge doll and started making haste away from it and towards the white door, practically knocking Kunikida to the side and could have fallen over if not for Atsushi coming in and catching him in the process.

“Just saying though, if you leave through that door, you’ll forget everything that happened!” Lucy called out. Though the citizens ran out anyway out of fear as the door closed behind them. She huffed as she stood up straight. “Well great, just the four of you then.”

Atsushi was next to Kunikida as he sighed. “Doppo-san, I think…I think this is a good time to get out of here. We can handle it—”

“Yeah, no I’m not going anywhere.” Kunikida shook his head. “That doll is somewhat terrifying, yes but even if I want to go through that door, if what she said is right, I won’t remember a damn thing. You won’t be better off than me being here. Besides, I don’t leave my friends behind.” He smiled a bit.

The other had a point but this was dangerous. Atsushi sighed before he felt a tap on the shoulder. He and Kunikida looked to see another face that hasn’t seen before.

“S-Sorry to interrupt but have you seen this young lady?” The man in the white coat pulled out a picture from his front pocket and held it out for them to see. “Her name is Elise, so cute and angelic and I’ve been looking for her. Any clue would be appreciative.”

They took one look at the photo and the pair shook their heads.

“I wished we did but no, sorry.” Kunikida felt bad. “I don’t see a young girl around that looks like her.”

The man sighed as he hung his head. “I see. Then, she may be one of the captives behind that dark door. If that’s the case, I’ll regret running away for the rest of my life. So I’m staying as well.” He concluded with some determination.

Atsushi can understand that too. “Alright then.” He looked at Kunikida and the man. “Tanizaki and I will be the ones taking care of this. You two please be safe and hide somewhere. If worst comes to worst, just go. No point in all of us being captured.”

“It can’t be helped then. Also,” Kunikida was already writing something in his notebook. “If we can’t remember, messages come in handy.” He closed it after making a mark on that page corner. “But I have faith you guys can do it. And Atsushi,” He looked at him with a smile. “Know that you can do this, you and Tanizaki. At the very least, I can protect this man with my all so don’t worry about us, okay?”

Opening his mouth for a bit, Atsushi then nodded. “Thank you, Doppo-san. Wait for us then…we’ll be back.” He stood up and went towards the enemy with Tanizaki standing by his side.

“Come on, sir.” Kunikida pulled the man’s sleeve and led him to one of the big present boxes. “Don’t worry, the agency will save everyone, including Ms.Elise if she’s there, I’m sure of it.”

The man hummed, curious. “You seem so sure. But if you say so then I’ll believe in it as well.” He glanced over at the blonde, something was going his head but kept it to himself. “Though I thought you were an agency member as well seeing how well you’re taking this.”

Kunikida looked surprised before he snorted. “Who? Me? No way.” He chuckled. “I can’t do half of the things that Atsushi and the others can do. Although,” He looked forward. “Just to do something for them even once, is a great feeling. I may be a citizen but even I care for the city and those in it because if the agency can’t protect them, then who will?” Though he wasn’t exactly taking it well, he just tried to not dwell on the negative aspects of the situation. Though compared to the abduction, this somewhat pales in comparison.

“…I see.” The man had a smile on his face as if something clicked. “So that’s how it is.” He murmured the last part. Well, this will be interesting.

“The rules are simple.” Lucy started. “Play tag with my lovely Anne. If she touches you, you lose. And just to make it even, here’s the key to the door. If you can make it to the door and unlock it, you win!”

A key appeared out of thin air as it was floating between the two agents.

“So? Who will join in on the fun~?” Lucy asked with a grin.

Tanizaki’s frown deepened as he looked on. “Can two people play the game at once?”

“Of course~” Lucy nodded in approval. “After all the more the merrier~”

Looking at Tanizaki, Atsushi grabbed the key. ‘We might be able to win with Tanizaki’s light snow. I have to keep in mind that Doppo-san and that man would be next targets if we’re not careful.’ They can do it. No, they have to since there is no one else.

“Are you ready to play?” Lucy asked.

“You bet.” Tanizaki nodded.

Lucy hummed. “Ready….set…go!”

Atsushi was gearing to go but it happened in mere seconds. Tanizaki got grabbed by the doll and thrown into the room behind the dark door where the doll-like hands took him and the door closed on him. He got blindsided at that.

“…What?” Kunikida thought that was too fast and frankly, this was cheating! It seemed the doll wasn’t just there for looks.

Lucy looked delighted as she smiled up at her doll. “Would you look at that, we made a new friend~” She then leaned in closer with a curious look. “Oh? Do you want more friends? Well in that case….~”

Atsushi felt the hostility of the doll and just as the doll was about to grab him, he released his ability partly as he now had tiger-like legs. He landed on the ceiling but the doll was gaining speed. He hopped off and grabbed a loose end of a yellow ribbon and ran alongside the wall before hopping off, just a bit out of reach from the doll’s hands before landed on the ground again.

Kunikida was glad Atsushi was quick on his feet but was worried nonetheless. If that was barely enough to keep up with the doll then he and the man had no chance.

“Wow, super amazing! I would like to see more~” Lucy applauded as the doll was then behind her, waiting. “What a spectacular ability. Strong and useful, too.” However, that smile did not hold any sort of joy as her hands were curled into fists. “With that power, I bet you were loved and valued highly the moment you were born. Though I heard you were an orphan. I grew up in an orphanage too…such a cold place that was….”

[“After using cold rags to clean the whole day, my hands were aching for a long while…”]

Lucy turned to face Anne the Doll and hummed. “Given my ability, everyone thought I was a freak. Well, in any case, I heard that the agency was desperate to find you when you were taken. That must be great since it was probably because of that ability of yours.”

That wasn’t it, that wasn’t it at all. Atsushi opened his mouth to say it but he was cut off by Lucy.

“The same goes to me though. The guild took me in because of my potential my ability. But there can’t be any room for error for them. If I were to fail…I’ll be tossed aside like a used napkin…and I’ll be all alone again.” Slowly, Lucy turned and faced Atsushi with a look of contempt and resentment. “Say, why did it have to be you? Why couldn’t have been me? It…it’s unfair! You should know how I feel too! How about you stay in this room for all eternity!?”

Kunikida was speechless at Lucy’s words. He felt as though this was no different than what happened a short while ago. He won’t lie, just seeing someone take it out on Atsushi when he had no control over their misfortune, caused a small pit of anger in him. However, in some sense, he understood. That wasn’t the time for it, this wasn’t about him, this was about getting everyone home. His heart was aching, hoping for the best. Though he wasn’t aware that the man next to him was watching him for a moment.

Meanwhile, just as Atsushi thought that he won after throwing presents at the doll and distracting it, and getting to the door, he heard the man shouting out to watch out for something as the key was in view. The key morphed into something on the end and cut his cheek, causing him to flinch and throw the key away.

“Hey now, that key is very important~” Lucy stated as she picked up the key.

Atsushi turned to her confused and on edge. “I thought if I could open the door with the key!” It was supposed to be a surefire victory!

“I mean yes if you can get that open.” Lucy’s smile was thin and filled with malicious glee. “Though even don’t even know how to use this key myself~”

The pit in his stomach sank as Atsushi gulped. ‘…There was no way to win in the first place…’ It seemed the odds were never in their favor.

Seeing the despair in his face made Lucy smile even wider. “The real game starts now, tiger boy. You seemed to be good at tag but I wonder how long you will last~”

“….This isn’t good.” Kunikida murmured, catching the man’s attention. “At this rate, Atsushi will be at his limit. There is no shame in running away but….” He was pondering and pondering as he wondered what a candy store owner can do for an agency member. Suddenly his eyes widened as it clicked in his mind. “….Maybe…I can…”

The man raised an eyebrow. “Young man, what are you thinking…--!” He was then given the other’s notebook. “Oi!”

“Atsushi can’t do this alone and I can’t sit back anymore.” Kunikida got into a running start position as he was watching the game go on. He saw Atsushi drop into a pile of presents after another ribbon got in his way. “I know you owe me nothing and we’re strangers but please…take that notebook and Atsushi and get the hell out of here. The doll can’t get to all of us so I’ll distract it as long as I can…”

The man held the notebook with a curious frown. “And what do you propose to do to distract the doll?”

Slowly, a grin was on his face though the other couldn’t see it. Kunikida chuckled. “I may not be as fast as Atsushi but I can take some pride in what I can do.” He waited until the doll was close enough before he broke into a sprint and ran towards the doll. Using a huge present as a stepping point, he hopped onto it, and then with a giant leap, he went and landed on the doll. “Got you!”

Needless to say, everyone involved got confused, even the doll had no idea what to make of it.

Kunikida, though, grinned. “You want Atsushi? You got to get me first! Let’s play horsie!” He grabbed the pigtails and started to pull up. “Giddy up!”

That seems to get a reaction out of the doll as it started to thrash and move around to get the man though the arms were still flailing around.

“W-What the---hey! This is not part of the game!” Lucy was shocked if anything as her attention was on the man who was on her precious doll.

With both distracted by that display, Atsushi managed to crawl to where the man was to take a breather. “Damn….I don’t know what Doppo-san is thinking but I guess I’m glad he came in when he did.” No more and he really would have run away. Though the urge was still there. “But he can’t distract them forever…and I’m all out of options on what to do.”

“Are you sure about that?” The man was next to him. “Granted, what that young man is doing is unorthodox to put it lightly but at least he didn’t give up on trying, unlike what you were about to do.” It was as if the man can see right through him.

Atsushi flinched as he gripped the ribbon that was around his neck. “I…I don’t know what else to do…I’m not my mentors…and yet….” He can feel the darkness creeping in as his confidence was dwindling.

“Young man.” The man tugged at the ribbon to bring him back to reality. “First off, no matter how you slice it, running away won’t help in this case. The blonde young man-made have had a message in this notebook but there is no guarantee it’ll help and we have no time to test that. Not with the enemy that can continue their attack easily.” Though he had to backtrack as he got a curious look from Atsushi. “W-Well I mean, if you won’t listen to this local neighborhood doctor.”

Atsushi slowly nodded as he looked at the man directly.

“With that in mind, I have something good to tell you.” The man smiled. “In game theory, the optimal strategy would be to launch a counteroffensive on the enemy that attacked you. Strike and crush the enemy in one go.”

That sounded too good to be true. “But…how would I go about that?” Atsushi had to ask.

The man looked at the scene as the doll and Lucy were still trying to get Kunikida off from the doll with a slightly amused grin. “Well, this is a common kind of enemy, an enemy that is arrogant in their abilities and believes that they are invincible. The most vulnerable kind of opponent one can face….although,” He frowned deeply at Atsushi. “I hope I didn’t mishear but those behind the door are some of the people that were desperate to rescue you when you were taken, correct? What of them and that blonde young man? Or is this how you repay them for all that they have done for you? Running from the battlefield at a moment’s notice?”

A lump was formed in his throat for a moment before Atsushi hung his head. The man was right. This is not how he should be. Yes, he was scared. Yes, he felt powerless. However, he can’t just turn tail and run. They may not blame him, Kunikida will certainly not blame him…but he would forever regret it if he ended up being a coward when they did do much for him. He doesn’t give up now. “…No more…now it’s my turn to do something.”

“Of course.” The man let go of the ribbon. “For this is your optimal solution.”

Kunikida was tossed into the air and hit the ground hard, groaning as he struggled to get up due to the pain. He looked up and saw the doll looming over him.

“Had your fun, huh?” Lucy stated with a scoff. “But it’s over. When I saw we’re playing tag, we’re playing tag….and you’re it.” She gestured the doll to get the man.

It was ‘fun’ was it lasted but he just hoped Atsushi and that man got away. Though Kunikida was surprised to hear Atsushi’s voice as he turned to the young man still standing there. “…Atsushi?”

Lucy turned to view the tiger boy and smiled. “Good seems that your motivation is back. The game would be boring otherwise. It’s a shame though…it’s already over…”

Suddenly Atsushi can see the doll coming from the ground and moved to jump but then he was grabbed and was surprised. “But how--?”

“Well that’s easy~ There’s more than one of you~” Lucy gloated.

The dark door opened and came out those doll-like arms that went and took Atsushi as they dragged him towards that room. He tried to get away but couldn’t as he was plunged into the darkness that was a prison.

“Atsushi!” Kunikida cried out but his heart sank as the door slammed closed.

There was a moment of silence before Lucy clapped once. “Well, that’s that. I must say, I have fun playing tag with him, too bad that he lost. Though I really should thank you two for bringing him to me. Despite that hiccup that blonde guy did, the plan was a success and I’m sure I’ll be praised for it—” She was cut off when a present box flew past her head and hit the wall behind her. In front of her was the blonde guy who was taking deep breaths, apparently to try and calm down. However, that did little for him as he looked up and her body froze up in a sudden bout of fear.

Lucy may or may not have been shaking because of it.

“….I hate it.” Kunikida murmured. “I…hate the kind person that you are!” He declared. He had had enough. “This is so…god damn stupid! You’re just like him! You think that you know Atsushi already by one meeting. You threw baseless assumptions and took your anger out of him for no good reason.” He argued. “You don’t see people, you see what could have been and lashed out because of it. How can you possibly know how good his life was? And don’t misunderstand, having pain is not a competition! We all hurt inside, your pain is validated but you decided to be petty and took it out at him, and for what? Because he seemingly had it better than you? How in the actual hell can you know that? You don’t know anything about him and the worst part of all, you’re no different than those bullies that put other people down just to make themselves feel better!”

The man was slightly shocked at those words and covered his mouth with a hand. Oh, dear.

Lucy was speechless and frankly hurt. Her hands curled into fists as she glared at Kunikida. “What the hell…do you know about me?”

Kunikida stood his ground. “Right back at ya, young lady.” He knew that it was harsh on his end, those words that he threw at her but he just couldn’t take it lying down. The stare-off was broken when something slapped against his chest. He was surprised not only to see his notebook but the hand that was on it.

“Now now, let’s not get too heated.” The man smiled. “This is all well and good but aren’t we jumping too far ahead? After all, the game has ended but the outcome is different than she has expected.”

Lucy narrowed her eyes. “What do you mean by that?”

Curious also, Kunikida then felt something in the air as he looked up, only feel something touch his nose. It was one, then two, until there was enough for all to see, dropping down on them…like snow.

“Get it now?” The man smiled. “The game is over and you have lost. Don’t believe me, look at the door.”

Turning her head, Lucy saw the door glitch and instead of a closed door, the door was wide open along with a grand surprise. There was Atsushi, just barely hanging on against the doll’s arms as his tiger-like hands and feet were clinging full-online frame. “Wait, what!?”

Kunikida was surprised and then delighted. “Atsushi!” Oh god was he relieved to see him.

“But…But I remember closing that door…?” Lucy was shocked. “So how…?”

Atsushi moved his head up a bit as he looked at her full on. “You made one fatal mistake; this game was two against one from the start!” It was because as soon as the door was opened, the quick strung plan commenced. “Tanizaki used his ability to create a false door, giving you the illusion that I sucked in.”

Lucy stared as she shook her head, unable to believe in that. “But…that’s impossible…and yet…you were able to withstand those arms by the strength of your arms and legs?”

“…Let’s get one thing straight, you misunderstand me,” Atsushi stated. “I’m not that strong, I’m not even popular. I…I…my life has nothing but terrible and cursed. So I know…I know and understand your jealousy and hatred of others too well. I don’t want to fail this mission, I don’t want you to lose the only place that you belong…but…but because of how weak and inexperienced I am, I can’t think of any other way!”

She felt a tug as Lucy saw what was around her waist. “…! This is…!”

“Sorry, but I tied a ribbon around you.” Atsushi then gave it a hard tug, sending Lucy flying and hit against his side, holding her tight. “Now then, release your ability and let everyone go…or else I’ll drag you into the room.”

The man had to hold Kunikida in place as he saw the man trying to move towards the door. “Don’t. This isn’t your battle. Have faith in the young man to do what must be done.”

Kunikida bit his lip but did his best to be still. The conflicting emotions were just too much to push down.

“Without the key, the door can’t open,” Atsushi continued. “So if you were to be imprisoned in this room, no one can ever open that door and you won’t be able to return to reality…even if you were to release your ability…am I wrong?”

Lucy was shaking as she looked away. “T-That’s….” She couldn’t deny it, any of it. The tiger boy was right.

“Our abilities, the power that we have are not tools of convenience to control everyone else. I know that better than most. So tell me, do you want to stay here until your death…and beyond that?”

“I-I can’t…I can’t afford to fail!” Lucy argued with tears in her eyes and the fear in her voice.

Then it came down to that. “I’m going to let go…and in that spilt second, you must decide what to do before the door closes,” Atsushi stated. “That is all the time you have.”

“No, wait, please!” Lucy pleaded.

Atsushi felt bad, terrible even. If he was in her shoes, he’d be pleading for them to reconsider but his hand was forced and he had no other way to end it. Closing his eyes, he counted to three and then he let go.

Lucy’s screams were the last things heard before everything went dark.

--

Opening his eyes, Atsushi heard the honking of cars. He moved his head up and he realized that he was no longer in Anne’s room but back at the crosswalk. He also noticed that Tanizaki, Naomi, Kenji, and Kunikida were there as well. He moved to sit up and sighed in relief. It worked. He was glad for that at least.

“Atsushi!” Kunikida was coming towards him and tackled him with a hug, sending them both back on the ground. “You did it, you saved everyone! We’re all back!” He lifted his head and smiled. “Good job, Atsushi. I’m proud of you.”

Silent for a moment, Atsushi shyly returned the hug. “I couldn’t have done it without Tanizaki…and you…thank you.” He smiled and pushed them both back into a sitting position. “We won the fight but…who knows what tomorrow might bring.”

“True.” Kunikida moved to stand up. “But I’m not too worried about it. There isn’t anything that the agency can’t do.” He lends out his hand. “You’ll get stronger Atsushi, I just know it. So let’s savor the victory for now, hm?”

Chuckling despite his worries, Atsushi took that hand and nodded. “Yeah, you’re right. Still though, thank you.” He looked over and saw a familiar figure sitting on the sidewalk. Cautious, he went up to her. “Um…I-I…listen…if there is anything…anything I can do for you…!” He stopped as he saw tears in Lucy’s eyes. He didn’t move when she started running away, knowing it won’t help.

However, that didn’t stop a certain someone else.

“I’m going after her, go back to the agency and tell them what happened!” Kunikida wasn’t as fast as Atsushi but when the man moved, he moved quickly. “I’ll be back.

Atsushi just stood there blinking, wondering what was going on in his friend’s head.

Not too far from the scene, Lucy was running as fast as she could, away from the scene, away from the agency, and away from the tiger boy. She couldn’t deny that she had failed and the guild won’t be kind to that but she was in a foreign country with no one else to turn to. If nothing else, even if she failed, there had to be some use for her then.

“W-Wait, hold up!” Kunikida with his long legs eventually caught up to her and grabbed her arm. “Hey!”

“Let go of me!” Lucy pulled her arm back. “You got what you wished for and your chummy little friends are back. And what? Are you going to rub it in my face of how wrong I was and I should have been smarter about what I said—”

“I’m sorry!” Kunikida blurted out as he bowed his head in front of her.

That threw Lucy off as she blinked. “I…what?”

Kunikida bit his lip. “I’m so sorry. I…you did something that I can’t condone but it wasn’t like you had a choice. I know that now. Even though you took it out at Atsushi, it wasn’t without reason. At the very least, I’m sorry for adding more pain to you. You didn’t deserve that. You weren’t in a position to do anything else…I’m not any better either to say it so…”

Looking at the man lowering his head, Lucy had half a mind to just give him what was coming for him. However, when the man’s words sank in, she felt herself deflate as she sighed. “Move your head up before someone around here thinks we’re some couple breaking up or something,”

The blonde moved his head up but still felt bad as he looked at her silently, letting her take control of this moment.

“…Listen,” Lucy finally spoke up. “It’s not like you weren’t pulling those words out of your ass or anything. I can tell you care about the tiger boy. You got scary angry because of it. Either way, I failed. You get tiger boy back and everyone is happy.”

Frowning, Kunikida crossed his arms. “And what about you? You’re still going back to the guild, right?”

Snorting, Lucy threw her arms up. “Where else can I go? I failed my mission! Maybe they’ll take me back, maybe not but there is better than being alone again. So like…later. I appreciate the genuine apology but it’s no big deal.” She waved and started walking off.

“If…!” Kunikida started. “If you have nowhere to go back to…if that’s how you feel…then, you can stay with me for the time being.”

Lucy turned and looked at him like he had three heads. “What?”

“Hear me out.” Kunikida had to say. “I…I don’t normally do this for anyone. But the thought of you having to go back to a place where you’re not appreciated, at least that was the implication, just because it a place you always knew. I…I know how it feels to an extent about not being valued and appreciated. Enemy or not, it’s not fair to you. So…you can stay at my place until you found a place of your own, whether it’s a home or a job or friends. How about it?” He lends out his hand in a shake.

She thought about it as she looked at the man and his smile. It wasn’t as if she was hated in the guild or didn’t have people to talk to but friends? That was a stretch. There were a lot of things that people don’t know about the guild or the people in it but at the end of the day she had to look after herself, despite the good they have done for her, results matter. “You know what, sure. Why not?” She took his hand and shook it. “Not like I have much to lose now.”

Kunikida would beg to differ but to him, this was a win. “Great. Um…we should go back though, I um…” He wasn’t sure what else to do and now that he got someone from the guild, he realized that oof, how was he going to explain the agency about it. Well, maybe it’ll be fine.

[Turns out it was chaotic to put it lightly when Atsushi saw the pair coming back, vocally made it know and it all went downhill from there. Good thing Dazai was on his side throughout it all, although he had his own choice words about it as well.]
