it’s clean. it could never be anything else, never sullied or rusted or fouled, because our souls were pure when i was ten and you were eleven and we melded them together.
before you, i was a gemstone undiscovered. i was worth no more to the river in whose bank i hid than the rocks and the sticks. i have always glinted in the sun, but i was only made precious under your enamored eye.
your voice took up residence in my lungs, replacing my need for breath with a new demand for the ring of my three syllables on your tongue.
we, bound, are so magnificent that we’ve developed our own gravitational pull. as we spin through space, i’ll collect moons and moons for you. i know how you’ll love the company. they’ll forever adorn us, admiring with me how starlight can’t help but flit through the strands of your hair.
i know that your name is destined for legend. your eyes, once only for me, must soon bear witness to someone else’s war. promise me that i may stay and witness the horrors with you. let my hands bind your wounds. let my ears hear your mourning melodies. i will not deny you your fate; i will seal mine to it.
