Chapter Text
Sans wasn’t really blind.
That’s what he told himself every morning as he dressed for work. Sure he needed Papyrus to read things for him and maybe telling monsters from the same family apart was nigh impossible. But, he didn’t bump into people often, he didn’t get lost in the caverns, he could still see.
The only thing he lost in that fight was a small sliver of vision and in return Sans got a really bad-ass scar. Even Alphys had said it made him look more intimidating. It was worth it.... Right?
During his recovery the two wayward guardsmen had taken up cooking while waiting for his vision to return. It never did. Alphys knew he probably wasn’t able bodied enough to run a sentry post but she let him regardless. After All if it got out that Sans was in less than tiptop shape he would be nothing more than dust on the wind.
So the cooking lessons continued.
His brother never left his side during supply runs or day trips. Sans didn’t go out at night. He avoided crowds. He adjusted to the new norm.
Then the human fell.
Chara was not what Sans was expecting a human to be.
Not that he could tell them apart from all the other slightly humanoid shaped monsters. In fact he had thought they were a monster upon first seeing them. A small weak stripeling who needed help from an amazing royal guardsman in training.
He liked Chara. They reminded him of his brother, all sas and indifference covering up a core of solid steel. When Papyrus broke the news they were human Sans was already in too deep.
Sans still fought them of course. He had too. The human had bested him in combat and then moved to take on all the other monsters that were out for their soul. Sans of course had demanded Papyrus keep an eye on them. Not that he needed to with how Papyrus was following them around like a sleepy hound dog.
Then the impossible happened. They were freed. The Queen led them into a new life on the surface and Chara retreated to live with their new dad Asgore. Sans had taken up the role of honorary uncle. He was so proud and happy.
Papyrus seemed like he was happy too. Spending more and more nights with the ex-king of all monsters. Sans was happy for him, really he was. Even if that meant he had to adjust his life all over again.
Luckily for all of monster-kind they were not the first group of monsters to be freed. In fact by the time they had first laid eyes on the sun there were at least three or four other groups that had already sorted out integration into human society and preserving monster traditions.
The closest group of monsters to Sans location were the first ones to break free. They only lived on the other side of the human city. It was inevitable he would run into monsters from there eventually. He just wasn’t expecting it so soon.
And he certainly wasn’t expecting it to be another skeleton like himself.
