Chapter 1: I used to hear a simple song

Chapter Text

“I love Valentine’s Day,” Jirou sighed, clutching a bouquet of white roses she’s got from Yaoyorozu.

It was the beloved February 14th at U.A. Left and right, students were presenting gifts to their partners or confessing their love to their crushes. Some receivers of gifts, such as Jirou, got put into some sort of lovestruck trance while others were already planning presents to give in return for White Day. Ochako was unfortunately neither of these as she hadn’t received a romantic offering.

“That’s the 3rd time you’ve said that, Jirou,” Mina said, rolling her eyes, “Stop making us all feel single.” Out of spite, the violet-haired girl walked over to Momo and gave her long, passionate kiss.

“Get a room.”

“This is my dorm!”

“Oh, stop it, Mina.” Ochako smiled playfully. “You’re only upset because you didn’t get anything.” The other girls snickered as Ashido’s face turned a much deeper pink than usual.

“What about you, Uraraka,” Mina shot back, “Aren’t you supposed to be getting a present from a certain green-haired someone?”

Ochako didn’t blush as much as Mina did but she did begin to float away from the rug they were all sitting on, which was practically an answer.

Momo gasped, “You got him a gift instead, didn’t you? Are you guys dating now?”

Much to Ochako’s relief, Hagakure spoke before she could answer, “So, Tsu, did you get anything today?”

“Nope.” Tsuyu tucked her hair behind her ear. “Why would anyone would have crush on me, ribbit?”

“Why wouldn’t anyone have a crush on you,” Uraraka questioned, floating back down, “You’re pretty, smart, responsible, empathetic. It’s ridiculous that no one’s asked you out!”

“I-uh-thanks Ochako,” Asui stammered “That really means a lot to me.”

“It’s no problem.”

The girls sat in silence for moment.

“We should probably study,” Tsu pointed out, breaking said silence.

All the girls let out a groan. “C’mon, it’s Sunday!” Jirou flopped onto to her bed in protest. “Can’t we just relax?”

“She has a point, Jirou,” Hagakure spoke up, “We have a quiz tomorrow.”

“Fine, fine. Let’s get out our notes.”

Tsu was the only person who moved towards their bag in the corner of the room.

“What’s the point of the dumb math quiz if we’re going to be heroes,” the pink-haired girl wondered, as Tsu rummaged through her bag, “Think about it! I’m not going to be fighting a villain and all of a sudden they pull out Ruler’s formula.”

“It’s Euler’s,” Ochako corrected.

“That’s what I said!”

“Ribbit.”

Jirou lifted her head off Yaoyorozu’s lap. “Tsu? You alright over there?”

“Rib..bit...” she croaked. Asui was blankly staring into the interior of her bag as if all her notebooks and stationery had suddenly turned to jelly.

“Hello?” Mina waved her hand in front of Tsu’s face. “Snap out of it, will you?”

Hagakure quickly grabbed the bag and shook out it contents. Basic school items tumbled onto the ground. Pencils, pens, various sheets of paper, and textbooks. The only out-of-the-ordinary objects were a small bouquet of three pink tulips and a sealed envelope.

Kyouka’s eyes widened. “So you did get a love letter, after all,” she said. “I wonder who it’s from.”

Tsu snapped out of her trance and regained her voice. “There must be some mistake. No one would ever send me a love letter, ribbit. Maybe they-“

“‘Put it in the wrong bag?’” Mina shook her head. “Impossible. Your name is on the on the letter.” Mina handed her the envelope and, sure enough, the name “Tsuyu Asui” was written neatly on the back of the light pink envelope.

Tsu was blushing so hard that it looked like she was giving off steam. “I always had a soft spot for tulips,” she practically whispered. “How did they know?”

“That’s what’s we’re going to figure out!” Mina stood up. “We’re going to come together and find Tsu’s secret lover! We’ll search for clues, we’ll question suspects. We’ll be like-like-“

“Like detectives of love,” Momo finished.

“What she said!”

“Our first piece of evidence,” The alien girl began, “is that letter. Tsu, what does it say?”

Tsuyu had opened the letter while they were speaking and had gone  into lovedrunk trance, similar to Jirou earlier. “Ribbit? Oh, the letter?” She tucked her hair behind her ear and began to read.

‘Roses are red

The sky is blue

Something, something

I like you!’

After she finished, the girls muttered amongst themselves.

“Simple.”

“Short and sweet!”

“Our suspect’s no poet, that’s for sure.”

Toru glanced over at Ochako. “What’s up, Ochako? You’ve been awfully quiet.”

Uraraka had been watching the whole situation with barely any reaction, as if secret admirers and love detectives were a regular occurrence.

“I’m fine,” she assured. “I just spaced out for a bit.”

“Do you have any idea who the letter is from,” Tsuyu asked hopefully.

“I-“

For a moment, she hesitated.

She knew exactly who wrote that letter.

The person was standing in that very dorm room.

At that moment, Uraraka wanted to tell her everything.

How long it took to find those flowers in winter.

How Mina was thinking about the wrong green-haired person.

How strongly she felt about her.

Of course, Uraraka admitted none of this.

“No. No idea.”
