“Y’know...I really like your eyes.”
Sam smiled at Bucky, who lay across from him, face-to-face. Bucky’s cheeks grew red and he groaned, turning over and facing his back towards Sam. “Shut up.” Laughing softly, Sam placed his hand on Bucky’s arm, lightly squeezing his bicep. “C’mon, turn back around.”
“No, you’re just gonna keep saying really embarrassing things.”
“So, complimenting you makes you feel embarrassed?”
“Just shut up.”
It had been an exhausting week, but today he finally managed to catch a break. Spending time with his family and close friends truly made up for everything that had occurred recently, and took away some of the pressure and stress he was starting to feel after taking up the mantle as Captain America. Then, when Bucky arrived, with a cake and sunglasses, and all, Sam felt like everything was starting to fall into place.
“Hey.” Sam walked up to him, taking the cake from his hands, after he was done playing around with his nephews, and smiled. “Hey, Cap.” Bucky smiled back at him, his cheeks flushed from the heat and the sun. “Thanks for stopping by.”
“Of course.”
Sam went ahead and placed the cake at a table where the rest of the food and drinks were, and began introducing Bucky to anyone who hadn’t met him when he came around to help fix the boat. They all seemed to like him very much, which made him glad that Bucky had decided to come over. The man definitely needed it. He could tell that it made Bucky happy, too, because he spent the rest of the afternoon and evening grinning from ear to ear.
After the majority of the people had left late at night, Sam and Bucky stuck around to help Sarah and the others clean up. When midnight started rolling around, Sam had asked Bucky to stay the night, even though he knew he didn’t have to ask; it was already a given. Bucky had even brought an overnight bag and everything.
And now here they were, laying in Sam’s bed, talking until it was almost sunrise and everyone else was already asleep.
“C’mon, Buck, just turn around”, Sam chuckled.
“You’re not gonna say any more embarrassing stuff?”
“No, I won’t.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Bucky shifted and turned back around, facing Sam. The tips of his ears were slightly red still, and even Sam could see it with the bit of light from the moon that filtered through the window. He was truly whipped for this man.
“But, seriously, I really like you eyes. They’re beautiful.” Sam grinned, watching as Bucky’s eyes grew wide and groaned. Bucky tried to turn back around but Sam kept a hold of his arm to keep him from moving and proceeded to wrap both his arms around his partner and bring him close. “Nope, I’m not gonna let you do that this time.”
“I hate you,” Bucky grumbled, trying to get out of Sam’s grip, but finally gave up after a while of struggling and let his head rest against his chest.
“Please, you love me.”
“Shut up.”
“Only if you make me.”
Bucky scoffed and let out a small laugh. “I’m not falling for that one.” Sam chuckled and rested his chin atop Bucky’s head. Silence enveloped the two, the only sounds filling the room being that of their rhythmic breathing and the cicadas chirping outside. After a while, though, Bucky spoke up again. “You really like my eyes?”
Sam raised an eyebrow and slowly pulled away, looking at his boyfriend. “Of course. I like all of you.”
“Oh, there you again.”
Sam laughed and kissed his forehead. “You know that.”
“Yeah, well...I like you, too. A lot,” Bucky mumbled, averting his eyes. Sam smiled and leaned down, kissing him gently. His partner kissed him back, arms wrapped around him.
“We should really go to sleep,” Sam murmured, after pulling away. Bucky rested his head back against Sam’s chest, and sighed. “Yeah, we should.”
Sam closed his eyes, holding Bucky close, and sighed, trying to fall asleep, despite the fact that the sun would soon come up. But it was worth it.
“Hey, Sam?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you...For everything”
“Mhm.”
The two slowly began falling asleep, though it didn’t last long. Because the smell of coffee wafted into the room, meaning that someone was already up, and—
“Uncle Bucky! Uncle Sam! Wake up!”
