Work Text:
Enola Holmes was rudely awakened by the loud shrieks and exclamations of horror that came from the floor below the room she was staying in. It sounded like they were screaming bloody murder. Something was afoot. Something that she could investigate. Enola groaned because she had been having a rather pleasant dream about being reunited with her Mother. She stared up at the ceiling thinking for a few moments, before getting up groggily, and shaking the Viscount awake from his place on the floor. There was but a single bed, so she had made him sleep on the floor. It was the proper thing to do.
“Come on. You have to get up. Something’s happening. There are people downstairs. They might’ve found me,” Enola said to Tewky as she rushed to put on her clothing - today was a day that called for the whale bone corset.
“We were already woken up once during the night. It’s probably nothing. Go back to sleep,” he replied to her, though she knew that was not the case. The noises hadn’t died down, in fact they seemed to be getting louder.
“I didn’t wake up at all last night,” Enola said, too quickly, before continuing, “It’s something. We’re in danger here, we have to leave right away before they find us,” Enola said in one breath, while walking to the window to glance out, there was a commotion out there, but she couldn’t quite see as the sun was still rising. Thus Enola couldn't tell what was going on but in her heart she knew it was something serious. Something very bad had happened last night. She tested the latch on the window, it was firmly shut, though her mind hand been playing tricks on her that it wasn't.
“What danger could we be in? Surely we’re safe here. No one knows we’re using these lodgings.”
“If you don’t believe me, and we’re found, I’ll murder you myself,” Enola said, with her most stern voice, turning from the window to face the Viscount. Though she grimaced as she said that, the thought hitting her in the gut.
“Fine. What do you suggest we do?”
“Go and investigate of course.”
“You want us to go closer to the danger? Do you think that’s wise?” the Viscount questioned incredulously.
“You can stay here if you want. But I’m going. Now will you help me with this corset?”
“I can’t convince you otherwise can I?”
“No.”
Before Enola left the room she had to move a piece of furniture which she had barred the door with.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For once the disastrous event had nothing to do with either of them, Tewky thought when they observed what was happening in the place where Enola had sought lodging. She thought it was a fine establishment, he disagreed.
When Enola had left him in the room, he had to follow after her, he couldn’t let her walk straight into danger. When he had crept down the stairs he found he found her to be as white as a ghost, sitting hidden behind some food crates. The noise had since died down but there were a lot of people in the vicinity and hushed whispers spreading whatever rumours were the latest. The whole city would know of whatever event that had transpired here, with all the embellishments that everyone added to the tale.
He knew then that something terrible had happened, but they weren’t in immediate danger otherwise she would have been long gone, or would have fetched him. He couldn’t spy the person who had been chasing them either, so they had some time. Though he was kind of thankful she hadn’t come rushing back up the stairs with an assailant on her tail.
“Enola, what’s wrong?” Tewky asked, crouching down next to her. His hand gently touching upon her shoulder so as not to startle her.
Enola only pointed in the direction of the kitchen, her hand then went straight back to its position over her mouth. She looked to be upon the verge of tears. He was torn, he didn’t want to leave her, but he also needed to know what had happened in order to comfort her better.
“I’ll be right back once I’ve gathered some more information,” Tewky gave her shoulder a squeeze, and then turned and headed for the kitchen. Any previous thoughts of proceeding cautiously were gone, there was no need for him to hide.
And then he saw it.
The unmistakable sight of a human sized form which was covered by a sheet. He quickly assessed the area, a table had been overturned and there were a few miscellaneous items of food scattered around the floor. That must’ve been what had awakened him. Fruits seemed to have rolled all throughout the room, and there was a thawed bloody leg of lamb on the floor. The person must have been in the middle of preparing some food before whatever tragedy befell them.
Tewky found himself moving closer, his feet acting against his brain as he neared the covered form. He had to see who it was.
When his hand grasped the covering he hesitated, if he lifted this there would be no going back, if he didn’t lift it he may never know who it was.
He heard multiple sets of footsteps coming from the corridor and Enola shouting something, A warning or a distraction to whoever was coming down the corridor. He thanked her mentally, his time was up, so he made the decision on a whim. His hand moved involuntarily.
Tewky let out a gasp when he saw who it was.
The man who had been chasing them on the train.

Later when everything had calmed down, and when everyone had been questioned, Tewky had snuck back into Enola’s room, he had two very important questions to ask Enola. He had lied through his teeth to the investigators, saying that he had been with Enola all night, yet she hadn’t been there all night.
“Enola. Where did you go last night?”
"Tewky..."
